Glenn Hauser logs October 27-28, 2013

** ALBANIA. R. Tirana advises me that they will go back to the originally planned time and frequency for English to North America, 0230-0300 on 7425, after trying 0330 on UT Sunday Oct 27 as B-13 began, colliding with DW via Rwanda (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 960, Oct 28 at 0502 UT during another 5-minute `Fox-hole` of dead air on local KGWA, which still occurs more often than not, the best signal I am getting is not by nulling the KGWA carrier, where there`s a jumble of weak stations, but by aiming right thru it to the northwest: with volume turned way up, English is clearly readable with silly ball- and puck-game scores, from MLB and NHL, ID only as ``CBS Sports Radio`` and 0503 opening show ``After Hours with --- Lawrence``.

So it`s obviously 50 kW CFAC Calgary AB again which occasionally makes such a showing contrary to its imaginary direxional pattern away from the USA. Just to confirm, I figured it would take a lot of digging on the network website since American ones tend to overlook Canadian affiliates even if they have them, but
http://radio.cbssports.com/stations/
has CFAC 960 Calgary at the very top thanx to Albertan alfabetical advantage among the mixed-in states & provs. Among the 284 entries (if not that many affiliates, duplications?), there are three other 960s, in NY, OR and WA. Must have flipped from ESPN as in 2013 NRC AM Log, as I assume it and CBS are mux (mutually exclusive) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, Oct 28 at 0059, RHC is on in Spanish with Fidel clip, ID, // 6100. At 0106 I notice that 6000 is *still* in Spanish, but also in English! From fading patterns, I can tell that these are two separate transmitters, as dysfunxional RadioCuba left hand doesn`t know what the other left hand is doing, did not turn off Spanish one at 0100. I assume these are from the two different sites; it would be even worse if both are from same site. Meanwhile, the only other scheduled English frequency, 6165, is late coming up, so English is to be heard ONLY, mixed with Spanish, on 6000! I do make out an English ID at 0107 on 6000, but the Spanish sounds louder, better modulation and more assertive than the soft-spoken ``Ed Newman`` in English. Gilles Letourneu also reported this mix at 0108. I didn`t check later, but Dave Marthouse was still hearing the 6000 mix at 0213 and by then 6165 was on in English only.

12000, Oct 28 at 1252, bit of Spanish mixing with Russian from VIETNAM, suspected second harmonic of RHC 6000.

But wait, there`s another screwup: 17580, Oct 28 at 1346, RHC Spanish now has some CCI making a fast SAH, music atop, while other RHCs such as 13780 are in talk. At first I figure some unwary Eastern Hemispherian has landed here for B-13 on the assumption that 17580 would be open, since Arnie refuses to participate in HFCC for fear of running into Yankee Imperialists (and plenty of delegates from countries which have rid themselves of communism).

I sure want to get an ID on this! Then I can tell the song is in Spanish, lyrix ``amor``, segué to another SS song. Checked Spain 17595 in case, but not // that. Could it be another Cuban net? Yes! 1356 mentions Habana Libre, ``Reportero RP``, plug Festival Mundial de la Juventud, a typical Commie event; 1359 refers to Oct 28 being the anniversary of something concerning Camilo Cienfuegos in 1959y, ``Su Reportero RP`` again, then full ID with one chime as ``Radio Progreso Cadena Nacional, la Onda de la Alegría``.

So RP has not only added SW on 4765 in the evenings, but now here too! Unfortunately, already occupied by another RadioCuba transmitter. Probably from the two different sites, yet another example of unparalleled coördination. Will this continue or happen again? Still mixing at 1426, neither heard around 1630; RHC at least would have gone off at 1500. They are still announcing local time as UT -4.

BTW, checking HFCC I see that an unwary station has in fact registered 17580 despite RHC and RP: IBB in Pashto/Persian=Dari, 100 kW, 85 degrees from Biblis, GERMANY at 1330-1530. This might have been part of the mix under the Cubans. We`ll see if Arnie makes any adjustments next week because of this (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 5980, Oct 28 at 1243, R. Martí is VG with no jamming audible, after news, giving three 305-AC phones and other contact info for a sorteo involving béisbol to win a SW radio. (Like guessing who wins the National Sequence?). // 7405 is jammed as usual, but RM is atop it. Apparently the DentroCuban Jamming Command won`t consult HFCC; else they would know that 5980 has been extended from 0700 to 1300*.

At 1307 I check RM frequencies for what`s happening: 11930, VG with trace of pulse jam; 13830 wall of noise vs nothing; 9805 lighter jamming vs nothing; 7405 RM atop jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** DIEGO GARCIA. 12759-USB, Oct 28 at 0100, AFN is barely audible with broadcast talk, presumably some network news. May have just QSYed from 4319-USB. Meanwhile, I`m still waiting for a reply to my latest inquiry to AFN about the status of GUAM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 7475, Oct 28 at 0054, pop music in Greek, // much stronger 9420, so ERT or whatever is still funxioning on SW in B-13. 9420 is still VG at 0548 in Greek, unlike missing 24 hours earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985, Oct 28 at 0051, the wild AIR transmitter is on and just barely modulated with algo, stronger than 11740 which has CCI and I can`t tell if they match; at 0100 I find that 11985 has gone off and 11740 is now poor with music, flutter. These are the two previously scheduled for the 0045-0115 Sinhala service via Khampur and Goa respectively (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 11720, Oct 28 at 1250, IRIB IS, poor, 1253 announcement & NA. Scheduled as Urdu at 1250-1420, via Kamalabad, also // 11675, and Sirjan 9715 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [and non]. 5910, Oct 28 at 1344, very poor signal in Japanese or Korean, interrupted by H2O ute, i.e. Shiokaze, which Ron Howard reported only yesterday finally moved off 5985 where it had been since July(?), altho the jammer was still on 5985, marring Myanmar. But today the jammer caught up with 5910. And Sei-ichi Hasegawa says the 2000-2100 transmission of Shiokaze has been replaced with 1600-1700 on 5975 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALAYSIA. 5964.7, Oct 28 at 1310, het closest to D4 above middle C on my keyboard, 294 Hz, is the only sign of RTM`s Klasik Nasional program, as it beats against stronger Korean from CRI Xi`an, now scheduled 11-15 UT, plus more from CRI spanning 09-16. On Oct 22, Wolfgang Büschel measured KN on 5964.704, which is only 2 Hz from my indirect method (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 810, Oct 28 at 1208 UT, Spanish news from N/S, 6:08 TC, ad and deportes; no sign of WHB. Presumably XEFW in Tampico, already back on CST, rather than XERI Reynosa in the same direxion, which must still be stuck another week on US CDT. I`ve always found it strange that Tamaulipas should have two 810 stations, especially when one of them is 50 kW along the coast. NRC Pattern Book shows both non-direxional. Then there are lots of other XEs on 810 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 900, Oct 28 at 1214 UT, newscast originating remotely from ``Huatulco``, (Wiki: Huatulco, centered on the town of La Crucecita, is a tourist development in Oaxaca state``), temps around south / central Mexico but not the north, refers to 88.9, time at 1215 as ``seis y cuarto``; federal PSAs including CNDH. Somewhat overmodulated. 1217 CCI grows from another SS with news by YL. The latter could really be XEW, but the former, as in DXLD 13-38, already researched and traced the 88.9 relayer to XEOK, Acir in Monterrey NL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Oct 27 at 1900 UT, I have returned to the same location as yesterday, the MW hotspot in a mall parking lot in western Enid. Almost same space, but on Sunday the lot is almost empty if that should make a difference. I`ve timed it to arrive just before hourtop, hoping to get an ID on the 870 station, but conditions are somehow worse than yesterday: all I can detect on 870 at 1902 is a SAH of about 6 Hz. Normally readable 880 KRVN is also very poor.

1220, however, I do copy a definite YL ID at 1900 UT Oct 27 for ``KTLV, Midwest City-Oklahoma City, and streaming on the web at KTLV.com`` amid preachers. Reaffirming my claim to be first to log it for NRC in the XXI Century.

1120, Oct 27 at 1902 UT check, KEOR Catoosa is back on the air with gospel huxtering in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OMAN. 9760, Oct 27 & 28 around 0100, no signal from RSO where it had been in latter A-13, nominally at 00-02.

We can check HFCC B-13, but R. Sultanate of Oman always registers a whole bunch of wooden frequencies, including several at the same time even tho they are never heard on more than one frequency at once. Only two azimuths are shown, 220 and 315 degrees, the latter good for us. At 00-02, only 9500 is shown, so look for it there during this bihour.

I was going to pull out the full imaginary schedule, but too much trouble; instead, here are just all the 30 possible frequencies at various times during the 24 hours: 7260, 7360, 7375, 7435; 9500, 9540, 9730, 9740; 11670, 11975; 13590, 13600, 13620, 13675, 13775; 15140, 15350, 15355, 15560, 15595, 15630, 15760; 17530, 17565, 17580, 17590, 17595, 17700, 17830, 17870 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 28 at 0050, JBA carrier from R. Chaski and marred by totally uncalled-for Cuban pulse jamming. Yet with BFO I am still able to copy enough signal to time the cutoff at 0102:20* which is 5.5 seconds later than yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 7210, Oct 28 at 0553, RRI closing Russian service reciting entire schedule including satellite info, but with CCI from something. Oops! HFCC B-13 shows not only Tiganeshti at 0530-0600, but also CRI in Arabic via ALBANIA at 05-07! Didn`t collision alarm bells go off from the HFCC computer in Bratislava? Apparently not, perhaps due to non-overlapping CIRAF zones, but in the real world, they`re bound to QRM each other in the targets, not just here.

7220, Oct 28 at 0552, RRI is also here 10 kHz away with much stronger VG signal, rock in English, Actualitatsi ID (the #1 home service often relayed on SW; if you can`t put a tsedilla under the last T in the word, you must replace it with ts). Per HFCC 7220 is also colliding during this hour with CRI English via Albania, but if so, it`s buried.

Axually, I was hunting for TWR Polish at 0544, which in A-13 was on 7225 at 0544-0559; but now of course it`s shifted an hour later, trying to fool the Poles into thinking there`s been no time change, but frequency per HFCC has moved to 7300 on the 300 degree beam from Austria, which is not toward Poland, still // 5910 at 30 degrees, which is.

17840, Oct 28 at 1403, RRI with English clips during Romanian news, but SAH and CCI from a station with music. HFCC B-13 reveals: both RRI Galbeni in Rumanian at 1300-1500; and IRIB Zahedan in Arabic at 0520-1420, thus overlapping 1300-1420! Azimuths from respective sites are within 4 degrees of each other, 289 from Iran and 285 from Romania, altho the CIRAFs are different, which again facilitates yet another HFCCollision. There are plenty of free channels on 16m (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 12075, Oct 28 at 1303, fair signal with news, then weather for London, New York and Chicago, so must be V. of Russia: yes, ID with music in passing as Radio VR, then fuller Voice of Russia. In B-13 this is at 12-15 UT, 500 kW, 155 degrees from Dushanbe, TAJIKISTAN, apparently replacing 11530 in A-13, but with none of the hum which infested 11530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 11895, Oct 28 at 1253, BBCWS in English is fair-good here, with `Outlook` until cutoff at 1259:30. It`s 250 kW, 25 degrees from THAILAND, so also USward, plus previous hour at 45 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, UT Mon Oct 28 at 0052, WTWW-2 is on with ``Martha Garvin`s Musical Memories``, amateur hymn-singer and pianist, who availablizes her program to several US SW stations. Usual huge signal here and spreading beyond 5085. Also back on the air are 5830 WTWW-1 with SFAW and 12105 WTWW-3 with Bible in Spanish, after all being silent earlier on Sunday.

12105, Oct 28 at 1305, WTWW canned ID by Ted, then Russian Bible; VG signal and no CCI audible, totally burying RFA SAIPAN in Myanmarianese. So during the Week of Confusion, WTWW is still *1300v on 12105 instead of B-13 schedule from *1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGSET)

** U S A. 6115, Oct 28 at 0058, WWCR bigsig with rock music, ex-6875, now scheduled 21-01 UT, and after the Week of Confusion, from Nov 3 at 21-02. That opens another few frequencies for the pirates (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 930, Oct 28 at 1220 UT, what`s to be heard with WKY OKC nulled now? News in English, mentions wpr.org, funding plugs, Wisconsin weather, YL host, local, not NPR, talk show with guest Bill Krause(?). It`s WLBL Auburndale in the center of WI, on the WPR Ideas Network, 5000/70/500 watts, non-direxional (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1510, Oct 28 at 1228 UT, same promo twice for HOT, Tuesdays at noon, = Happiness, Opportunity, Technology. Presenter John Barnabas sounds British. Apparently a recent reordering as on website it`s T-O-H. An ID followed for ``Money Radio 1510 & 99.3 FM`` = KFNN Mesa AZ, 22000/100 watts. Dominant signal from the west. Hmmm, I wonder which power is in use now, long before sunrise? Has fast SAH from algo; then US Tax Relief ad (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 6175, Oct 28 at 0105, VOV English via Woofferton UK confirmed here ex-12005, only fair signal at best and with ACI from 6180 Brasil. Why in the world don`t they just use WHRI for the 0100 and 0230 English as well as the 0330? Wherever it`s aimed, WHRI would be much better for us than way-off Woofferton. The only advantage of WOF would be filling relatively close areas in the HRI skipzone around SC.

Meanwhile, what`s on 12005 now? SW Asian language mentioning Pakistan, better than VOV 6175. HFCC shows IBB in Pashto, 340 degrees from SRI LANKA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search Oct 27 at 1157: JBA on 702 from south of due west; 774 from northwest. 702 presumably 2BL Sydney NSW, whose true bearing is 251 degrees at 13860 km [date correct, overlooked for previous report] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9760, Oct 28 at 0552, American songstress soulfully singing ``I`m So Lonely, I Could Die``, poor-fair signal. Would expect this to be R. Nikkei 2 from JAPAN, except I am not getting anysig from Nikkei 1 on 9595. HFCC shows also during this hour, an IBB Kurdish service via Nauen, Germany, which could propagate, but hard to imagine such programming on it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9765, Oct 28 at 0055 past 0100, no signal nor panoply of distorted spurs as heard 24 hours earlier. Would sure like to find out what that was (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1943 UT October 28
