Glenn Hauser logs October 19-20, 2013

** ALBANIA [and non]. 9850, Oct 20 at 0122, R. Tirana is already on with IS; WHRI 9860 remains very strong, but no spurs bothering 9850 at this time. 0130 Klara signs on with correct A-13 schedule of the only two English broadcasts left. In one more week, for B-13 we know this will shift to 0230 on 7425, and the other one shifts to 2100 on 7465, daily except Sun/UT Mon (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ANGUILLA. 11775, Oct 19 at 2117, open carrier/dead air from The [so-called] University Network, whilst PMS is unobstructed on 13845 WWCR; by 2121, she starts cutting on and off 11775 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BANGLADESH. 15105, Oct 20 at 1245, S Asian music, 1249 talk in presumed English, very poor signal from Bangladesh Betar.

15505, Oct 20 at 1357, BB is on with tone, 1357:28 IS starts; off-timesignal ends at 1359:53, opening Urdu; very poor with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non], CNR1 jamming Oct 20 before 1300:
17250, JBA broadcast at 1246, presumed this
13130, good at 1250 with flutter; not synch with weak 13830 which is a few seconds ahead of 13130
12230, fair at 1253 with flutter
 9200, poor at 1256
No others found in the 16 and 14 MHz bands (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COSTA RICA. 9590-9670, Oct 20 at 0124, DRM noise bleeding from 9630 REE relay can be heard out to plus/minus 40 kHz, gradually declining, but really bad far beyond the alleged 10-kHz DRM bandwidth of 9625-9635. We can hardly wait for this to be turned off in a week, good riddance! (Tho we don`t yet know whether REE will attempt to replace it with DRM direct from Noblejas.) I would not say that, if the DRM Consortium had restricted DRM to unoccupied fixed-band ranges instead of invading the middle of AM SWBC bands causing untold collateral damage (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 4765, Oct 20 at 0058, NO signal from R. Progreso, but a JBA carrier from Tajikistan and/or Brasil, blocked since the beginning of October. Arnie Coro called this ``experimental``, so is it over now, or the fine old ``pristine`` Ukrainian transmitter failed? Same situation at 0127 check. After another spurt of activity on his blog, Arnie has again failed to post any DXUL scripts since the end of September (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. RadioCuba failed to turn CRI off 5990 by 0057 Oct 20, kept it on past 0100 opening English, additionally splashing 5980; see PERU.

6165, Oct 20 at 0108, RHC is in wrong language, Spanish instead of English, which is on 6000 only; 0122 still Spanish on 6165. Not rechecked until 0554 when 6165 is in English.

Meanwhile some RHC frequencies are off the air besides 4765 Progreso:
At 0108, no 6100 or 9810, while Spanish remains on 5040, 11760, 11840-distorted.

5040 off the air at 0554 check, while English remains on 6165, 6125, 6060, 6000; that`s enough, in fact overkill without 5040 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** DIEGO GARCIA. 12759-USB, Oct 20 at 0122, trace of music here on VP signal, ergo AFN still active (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE [and non]. 9420, UT Sunday Oct 20 at 0125, Ellenike Radiophonia presumed, but no longer classical music during this hour from Programma 3, instead Greek song. No ID heard, so can`t be certain whether this is the rump service which survived so long after everybody got fired by the government, or the EDT replacement at last. At least Romania is still playing classical music (operatic/choral at the moment) on 9535 // 7335 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, Oct 20 at 1150, piano hymn from TGAV; used to sign-on late Sundays, but now early enough to propagate before sunrise (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985, Oct 20 at 0057, poor signal with talk, and seems // 11740 this time, the latter with CCI, i.e. AIR Sinhala service back in whack. 0102 the music seems // and by now 11740 is CCI-free and slightly stronger from GOA than 11985 is from Delhi-Khampur (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 700, Oct 20 at 1203 UT, big hum on open carrier again, previously tracked to:
700 XEGD La Poderosa + FM 90.3 Hidalgo del Parral, Chih. 5,000 1,000

** MEXICO. 800, Oct 20 at 1208 UT, Donald Duck is really bad this morning vs KQCV OKC, except where I can get a tight null on it pointing right at XEDD Montemorelos, Nuevo León, previously traced to La Voz del Pato Donaldo; strangely, not much from XEROK with KQCV nulled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also UNID 750

** MEXICO. 860, Oct 20 at 1211 UT, Radio Recuerdos jingle, auto time & temp as 7:11, 16 grados, then ranchera. Loops almost N/S, and there is another SS song further west with this nulled, too many possibilities for that; no problem from KKOW KS at the moment. Per Cantú:
860 XENL Radio Recuerdo Monterrey, N.L. 5,000 2,000
IRCA and WRTH agree it`s singular, so did I mishear it? Means memory/memories (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 940+, Oct 20 at 1224 UT, usual het looping E/W always audible around sunrise here, but never with any audio, no doubt XEMMM in Mexicali, per mwoffsets as of 3.5 years ago:
940 940.174 MEX XEMMM-AM 940 Oldies (Mexicali/Santa Isabel)[939.9839-]         20100406 [not explained what the bracketed frequency means]

Cantú shows nite power of only 100 watts!
940 XEMMM 940 Oldies Mexicali, B.C. 1,000 100
And not to be confused with 50 kW XEQ in the DF which is always off to the lo side of 940 by a similar amount (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1320, Oct 20 at 1236 UT, from SSW, ``La Poderosa, Radiorama``, with teléfonos en cabina, federal PSAs including one from Comisión Nacional de los Derechos Humanos; 1238 teléfonos again including an 800-number, song. Dominating vs the CCI. It`s per Cantú:
1320 XECPN La Poderosa + FM 101.7 Piedras Negras, Coah. 10,000 100

** MYANMAR [and non]. 5915, Oct 20 at 1153, JBA carrier, possibly 50 kW, 356 degrees from Naypyidaw, if the 100 kW, 345 degrees from CRI Hohhot scheduled in Mongolian from 1200 hasn`t come on yet. This 5915 signal is quite weaker than something on 5910, presumably CRI Filipino service, 500 kW, 165 degrees from Beijing site until 1157 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. Following my log of 6925, R. Paisano, e-QSL received Oct 20 with this note: ``Radio Paisano is a novelty shortwave pirate station that only broadcasts on Columbus Day weekend and features the music of Lou Monte and the comedy of Pat Cooper. This was the eighth year that we were on the air. Attached is your e-QSL. Grazie, Luigi``
Nice with three ships of Columbus. And here it is added to my gallery:

** NORTH AMERICA. 6850-AM, Oct 20 at 0103, very poor signal with music past 0107; 0112 talk, 0113 music including chimes, 0114 a little stronger. I tuned down to here since there was *no* pirate activity above 6900; 6850 off at next check 0131, and then found Wolverine on 6945-USB. Per several logs at HFU, 6850 was Radio Free Whatever:,13280.0.html
and signed off at 0117 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6945-USB, Oct 20 at 0133, good signal with novelty song, must have come on shortly before as earlier there were no pirates to be heard except 6850. Shortly quick ID between songs only as ``Wolverine Radio``. 0134 song is ``Breakin` Up the House``; 0137 segué to some blues. This one consistently has one of the best signals here; after 0144 for supper, I could even hear it on the kitchen table DX-390 with whip, a little better with reel-out clipped on. 0151 ``Going Up the Country`` by Canned Heat, more segués, 0157 another ID (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU [and non]. 5980, Oct 20 at 0100, JBA carrier from R. Chaski, until cutoff at 0101:34* which is 5.5 seconds later than yesterday. Meanwhile, Cuba failed to turn CRI off 5990 by 0057, kept it on past 0100 opening English, additionally splashing 5980 (Glenn hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1691 monitoring: confirmed on WTWW-1, 5830, UT Sunday Oct 20 starting at 0401:36. I missed checking the Oct 19 Sat 2329v airing on WTWW-2, 9930. Did anyone hear it? Ted Randall`s QSO show was still running on next frequency, 5085 at 0128 Oct 20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, Oct 20 at 1152, open carrier/dead air again from WTWW-1. This is happening a lot, lately. 1254 check, modulation has resumed as late PPP is trying to get a Tennessee Ernie Ford song to play; but after 1300 change to 9479 some more OC/DA before resuming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7490, Oct 20 at 0117, WBCQ is on with old tape of RNI, as Allan must have decided to resume playing stuff from his archives during unsold airtime Saturday night, altho online sked still shows nothing on 7490 Saturdays/UT Sundays except Heart & Soul at 2300-0100.

M&W were discussing fishing from a pier in Lower Manhattan; toll-free phone number for mailbag, 1-800-73-69-RNI (ha ha); then talking about using a phone modem (remember those?), to contact Steve Cole for his Crossband show (remember him and that?), 918-495-6996, a service provided by Isle-Net (sp?); repeated number starting with 908 instead. Plugs advertising on Radio Newyork International, cut off abruptly, other announcers said that had been Randi Steele (remember him/her?), contact P O Box 270, Flushing NY 11352. (I assume all these numbers and addresses are long defunct.) 0120 referring to a report from Gary Poopers in Rockford IL, joking about his name. Etc., etc. Checked 5110 and not //. Newer RNIs with John P Lightning appear fortnightly UT Mondays at 0000-0300 on Area 51 via 5110v-CUSB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 920, Oct 20 at 1216 UT, from NW/SE, dominant signal goes from Michael Medved far-right talkshow to a break with ID for KVEL, Vernal UT, also on 104.5 (translator), adstring including a security system, Laity Lodge referring to Tom Landry, some football coach,, local sheriff vs texting & driving; ad for something in Roosevelt [UT], local reference to ``The Basin``, steak dinner for only $22.99 in Fort Duchesne, Palmer`s American Car Care also in ``The Basin``. Vernal is in exotic NE Utah`s scenic dinosaur country. 1 kW night pattern goes mostly NNE, while 5 kW day pattern is non-direxional, surely already on now, way before sunrise. KYFR Iowa is barely audible with KVEL nulled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1290, Oct 20 at 1233 UT, Spanish music and SHVA announcement, but can`t copy anything identifiable; loops N/S vs sports talk in English. The only SS which fits in NRC AM Log 2013 is KRGE, 5/5 kW in Weslaco, RGV, TX, tho it`s supposed to be religious. There are no northeast XEs on 1290 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 700, Oct 20 at 1918 UT on caradio at a hotspot for MW in a mall parking lot, I am hearing not only Spanish from KHSE in The Metroplex, but something very weak underneath making SAH of about 2 Hz. Looking at 700 map, it has to be the further Texan, KSEV in Tomball (Houston market), 15 kW day power, altho not much toward us in either station`s pattern. Short for SEVen hundred, I suppose. Could those between Dallas and Houston confirm the SAH? Otherwise, less likely would be remnant sky- or even groundwave from WLW, a bit far and this is only half a sesquihour after local mean noon, Sun at zenith. This would be a slightly more possible in Dec or Jan. Without KHSE in the way, almost same direxion, KSEV might have a better chance here on groundwave. (KTRH 740 is of course totally blocked by KRMG --- and I rarely hear anything but KRMG at night on 740 except CFZM Toronto). (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 760, Oct 20 at 1920 UT on caradio at a hotspot for MW in a mall parking lot, I am hearing not only the religiBott from KCCV Overland Park KS (Kansas City market) as usual, but something very weak under, making SAH of about 4 Hz. The second and third nearest 760s are KMTL 10 kW ND Sherwood AR, and KTKR 50 kW San Antonio TX, but direxional mostly west and east-southeast.

So which one is 4 Hz from KCCV? There is no reference for such needed information. Closest is
but woefully incomplete when it comes to US stations, on 760 listing only WJR, KFMB and WCHP, and some info there dates back more than a decade. Non-direxional 50 kW WJR remnant skywave would be another remote possibility, but it`s only half a sesquihour before local mean noon.

Another possibility for such trace signals would be local overload or mixing products, but in Enid we have only three MW locals which could be easily ruled out if I had enough on the traces to compare them.

FWIW, I always check 670 and 720 for Chicagoans in the daytime, which have made it before. Now at 1925 UT, 670 bears only KLTT Denver, and a very weak signal on 720 could be WGN, or KSAH San Antonio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic carrier search, JBAs Oct 20 at 0055: only 783, Mauritania? And 882, Canary Islands? I lean toward the latter rather than Europeans due to the lower-latitude paths, and they seem to come together (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific carrier search, JBAs Oct 20 at 1147 on 747, 774, likely the 500 kW NHK Japanese (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 750, Oct 20 at 1205 UT, Rosary in Spanish --- obsessed with Mary`s bellyfruit over and over and over (BTW, confusing the womb with the stomach suggests an appalling lack of knowledge of physiology among SS Catholix); loops about WSW/ENE, suggesting KAMA El Paso which is SS, but supposedly not religious, but2 it`s Sunday morning and anystation might do that temporarily. However, NRC Pattern Book shows both day and night it`s all-westward from there. Don`t see any other likely US SS stations even eastward. Rarely hear any Spanish on 750. The most likely Mexicans in Cantú:
750 XEOH  La Jefa + FM 96.1         Cd. Camargo, Chih. 1,000 750
750 XECSI Éxtasis Digital + FM 89.5 Culiacán, Sin.     5,000 250

UNIDENTIFIED. 940, Oct 20 at 1225 UT after noting the 940+ het from XEMMM (see MEXICO), partial ID in its null as ``94 [something] Country`` --- nothing similar in the NRC AM Log 2013 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 990, Oct 20 at 1226 UT as I tune in, 4? chimes, but not all-descending as with XEW/XET. This is mixing with XET La T Grande, and other CCI, and unthink it`s from Mont`y as never heard when surely listening to XET (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6911-LSB, Oct 20 at 0132, intermittent Spanish (?) and some singing, extremely distorted, sounds like an artificial larynx; same later at 0138 on about 6917 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1731 UT October 20
