Glenn Hauser logs October 19, 2013

** AUSTRALIA. 15340, Oct 19 at 1256, just before RHC comes on, nothing audible from HCJB; it`s active on both 15340 and 15490 at 1230-1300, and only hear something JBA on 15490 --- in contrast to good reception most of the time during our summer, longpath? Now like it`s dropped off the face of the earth (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11780, Oct 19 at 0459, RNA overnight show with usual very good signal level easily believable as 250 kW here (tho Brazilians in the skip zone think it`s much less) --- but modulation distortion is even worse than last time I checked; and carrier is slightly wobbly. This unit certainly needs attention, before it resume totally out of whackiness, QRMing many other stations across the band as has happened before (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jamming October 19 before 1300:
9200, poor at 1240; none in the 8s, 10s; skipping 11 MHz inbanders
12320, poor-fair at 1252
13970, good at 1254 with flutter
None in the 14-19 MHz range except weak ones in usual 15 MHz spots
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COSTA RICA. 5970, Oct 19 at 1226, no signal from REE relay nor on 11815 at 1324 check, just NHK. Has Cariari been closed down already? No, it`s just the inexplicable Saturday scheduling variations: per Aoki, 5970 is 12-15 Sun-Fri but no broadcast on Saturday. 11815 starts at 1200 only on Sundays, 1800 M-F, and 1600 Saturdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 17630, Oct 19 at 1258, CRI English with Chinese lesson filler, poor signal much weaker than French service with music on 17560 & 17650. French are via Kashgar, 17630 via Urumqi which I could not hear at all yesterday at 1342. Does the somewhat further north Great Circle path from Urumqi to Enid make all the difference? On the NGS Globe I see that both pass within 5 degrees of the North Pole, Kashgar on ``this`` side, and Urumqi, which is northeast of Kashgar, on the ``other`` side (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUAM. 5765-USB, Oct 19 at 1234, still no signal from AFN, so now it`s been absent for a full month. I am about to inquire of my AFN contacts about this (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985, Oct 19 at 0055 yet another SNAFU at AIR: open carrier with some hum, from Delhi-Khampur site, instead of Sinhala semihour. Might have played IS at 0058 prior to wrong language Sindhi, but not tonight; still OC/hum past 0100, 0102; meanwhile 11740 via GOA is apparently in correct Sinhala show at 0055; it`s poor with flutter, and music after 0100. I wonder if anyone in Sri Lanka (let alone AIR HQ) is listening and noting the same messups. I am the only one known to report them, worldwide (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 3325+, Oct 19 at 1228, RRI Palangkaraya with surprisingly good S9+18 signal in Indonesian talk. At 1232 check, 4750 RRI Makassar is quite a bit weaker than 3325 which is playing music. 3325 even better at 1242 (Enid sunrise 1243 today).

At 1243 I compare to 7325 CRI Japanese and find 3325 a tad on the hi side by comparison; 1244 traditional instruments and Radio Republik Indonesia ID, plugging its audio streaming, mentioning Surabaya and Jakarta, Berita Nasional; 1245 song.

By 1305, 3325 is still audible in music; 4750 better than before with talk. Meanwhile by 1228 already there was nothing showing on 90m frequencies from PNG, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN. 5985, Oct 19 at 1330, Shiokaze with usual sad-piano-music theme; 1332 alarm SFX, 1335 news sounders. I had lost track of it since spring, when the 1330-1430 broadcast became too late to propagate into deep North America on 49m. But today I look for it again on previously known frequencies, as it should remain audible for another semiyear.

Usually I can distinguish Japanese from Korean, but not so easy now: since I never hear an ``imnida``, it must be Japanese. Presumably English remains only on Fridays and this is Saturday. 5985 infected with the characteristic het from off-frequency Myanmar [q.v.] 5985.3 or so. By 1356, 73 minutes after sunrise here, JSR has become JBA.

In fact, I find no mentions of Shiokaze in DXLD since 13-32, as Wolfgang Büschel had it August 5, when it was previously on 5985 --- but must have rotated thru two or three other 49m channels in the meantime. This is ``Sea Breeze``, alternately also in Chinese, the service dedicated to getting Japanese kidnapped by the North Korea back (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MYANMAR [and non]. 5915, Oct 19 at 1236, some weak music is here, but no doubt it`s CRI via Hohhot 694 site, Inner Mongolia, as per Aoki starting at 1200 with 4 hours of Russian and Mongolian alternating, 100 kW at 345 degrees. Myanmar Radio at 0730-1530, so better try for it before 1200. I have a very hard time getting anything readable from Myanmar, but at least one frequency for certain:

5985.3, Oct 19 at 1240, very poor signal but surely Yangon on its signature off-frequency; no het as nothing on 5985.0 --- until Shiokaze at 1330: see JAPAN (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS. 24958-USB, approx., Oct 19 at 1401, PA1CC calling CQ and then making contacts with Russia and USA. The upper hambands are hopping, some contest benefiting from upward MUFs, altho not much showing yet today on 10m. QRZ.com listing:
PA1CC
Ton van Tuijn
Noord Besterdstraat 16
5014 JG Tilburg
Netherlands
Tuned up to 25000, but no sign of that Finnish MIKES timesignal which ought to make it to N America if Eurohams can on 12m (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3905, Oct 19 at 1233, JBA AM carrier among the SSB QRhaM, so apparently NBC New Ireland, Kavieng remains active. Replying to my previous log on Oct 17, Ron Howard says he confirmed it that day at 1202, and also heard it Oct 12-15 as late as 1404* but unconfirmed on Oct 16 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 19 at 0056, R. Chaski JBA carrier, with 5990 splash; cutoff at 0101:28.5 which is 5.5 seconds later than yesterday, as time marches on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 5930, Oct 19 at 1301, R. Rossii via Petropavlovsk/Kamchatsky finished at 1300 but good carrier is still on with some hum until 1301:37*. No CW markers followed like used to on ex-6075 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 9770, Oct 19 at 0053, TRT IS and then ID starting ``Burasi`` = Turkish for here is, but then speaking Chinese! Normally, the Spanish service at 0100 on 9770 isn`t on this far before the hour. Emirler must have turned on early, and plugged in some program feed from webcast, as there is no Chinese from VOT on SW schedule anywhere near this hour. Might also have been one of multi-lingual IDs interspersed with IS as they used to do with old IS, except this Chinese talk was more than just an ID, maybe sign-off of previous program; 0054 back to IS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1691 monitoring: confirmed on Area 51 webcast, and presumably WBCQ 5110v-CUSB, UT Saturday Oct 19 after 0200. Also confirmed on WRMI webcast, and presumably 9955, Saturday after 1500. Next: Saturday 1730 on WRN to North America; Saturday 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sunday 0401v on WTWW-1 5830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 630, Oct 19 at 0505 UT, solo M voice with hymn, from NE/SW, no doubt the St Louis station ex-KXOK (vs KHOW Denver from the NW/SE with I-70 traffic report: close to right angle apart, they are mutually nullable). Apparently 630 STL was off the air for a while:

NRC AM Log 2013 lists this as KJSL, 5/5 kW U4, religious ``Truth Talk``. Eric Bueneman, IRCA who keeps close track of his local radio scene, says in the Oct 5 DX Monitor, ``Bible Broadcasting Network signed my local on 630 back on the air September 25 as KYFI; the format is better than the fundamentalist talk that had been on the frequency for the last 19 years``. His further comments:

``The fundamentalist Christian talk shows are gone from the station,
replaced with a mix of Christian Easy Listening music and teaching from Bible Broadcasting Network. The studios for the station were moved out of St. Louis to Charlotte, NC (BBN's flagship is WYFQ 930). KJSL had its local studios in Creve Coeur. Crawford acquired the station (the former KXOK) in 1994. Crawford still holds onto KSTL 690, broadcasting an Urban Gospel format as "Shine 690"; for how long is another question. KSTL is back to 24-hour operation after selling the 630 outlet``.

Looks like it will now be harder to hear XEFB Monterrey NL, never a bigsig here unlike many other Mexicans. NRC Pattern Book shows it throws westward, while St Louis` major lobe is to the SSW, and KHOW to the SE and SW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 840, Oct 19 at 1220 UT, main station here is not WHAS or KTIC, but something NW/SE, speaker with strange accent answering questions fed by unaccented person about whether Arabs are descended from Abraham. In fact his accent was so heavy at first I thought it was some unEnglish language. The only thing which fits by format and direxion is KWDF in Ball LA, street address in Pineville, per NRC AM Log as REL: K-Love, 8 kW non-direxional daytimer, 7 am to LSS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM. 7906-USB, Oct 19 at 1307, Ho Chi Minh City Radio, YL in accented English mentioning ``one person overboard`` in notices to mariners; other SSB QRM from the hi side; into Vietnamese. Check // 8294-USB but it`s much weaker; 1314 in English again citing lots of numbers, like positions of vessels or obstruxions, 1315 back to Vietnamese. Ends at 1318:15* after a long series of very rapid tones at same pitch (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1721 UT October 19. Too bad there are long delays on some lists, beyond my control
