Glenn Hauser logs October 14-15, 2013

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] search for WOOB CNR1 jammers Oct 15 at 1355-1358 finds nothing; just some traces inside the 19m band as evidenced by hets with V. of Tibet (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN [and non]. 9535, Oct 15 at 0102, REE Spanish from Spain, which I am comparing to Costa Rica relay on wrong 5965 [see SPAIN], has considerable CCI from something in English; hard to copy, but sounds like CRI, same programming as on 9570 and 9580. Yes, per HFCC at 01-02, CRI English is on 9535, 100 kW, 174 degrees from Kashgar. We can always depend on the ChiCom to spoil other stations far beyond the nominal target areas (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EQUATORIAL GUINEA [and non]. 15190, Oct 14 at 2042, R. Africa is on with gospel huxter, but undermodulated and poor signal. That`s fine.

Comparing to other signals on band: 15140 Oman fair; 15540 Kuwait zilch; 15550 WJHR, 15610 WEWN, 15825 WWCR inbooming, must be HF sporadic E boost affecting short-skip signals only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY. 15390, Oct 15 at 1401, numbers pronounced in English, phones? Then unknown language, fair signal. Aoki shows Athmeeya Yatra Radio (Gospel for Asia), 250 kW, 85 degrees from Nauen, in Halam during this quarter-hour on Tuesdays. Halam? EiBi`s readme language key shows:
``Chin-Falam / Halam: Myanmar, Bangladesh, India (125,000)``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985, Oct 15 at 0055, 1-kHz tone, so here we go again, All India Radio via Delhi/Khampur broadcasting wrong program contrary to own schedule and all other listings; 0058 IS, 0100 talk in S Asian language, presumably opening Sindhi not supposed to be on this frequency; meanwhile at 0055, 11740 via GOA is not // but totally separate presumably with correct Sinhala talk, started at 0045; both have heavy flutter. 0106 recheck, still separate, 11985 talk, 11740 music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 4750, Oct 15 at 1252, music from RRI Makassar, best heard in some time; recent rain may have reduced the line noise level. 1258 YL romantic song past 1300; 1302 Indonesian announcements, mentioning RRI many times in promo.

4870-, JBA carrier at 1252, presumed Wamena; 3325 carrier with some talk at 1255, could be Palangkaraya or PNG (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 12080.0, Oct 15 at 0105, very poor, flutter in Arabic: IRIB`s Zahedan transmitter is back in whack today instead of a sesquikilohertz high – perhaps they only do that on alternate days (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN [non]. 15680, Oct 15 at 1355, fair signal with what seemed like praise music, but surely not as this turns out to be R. Farda; 1359 more like Pink Floyd; 1400, 4-pip timesignal at 2-second intervals, bottom of the hour in Iran`s wacky timezone out of step with most of the world, ID and into presumed news.

Aoki shows 15680 via Lampertheim, GERMANY at 1230-1430, but also on 15680 via Sri Lanka at 0230-1230. (And also on 15690 via Biblis at 12-14, but not audible there; also 0130-1200 via Sri Lanka. However, latest HFCC Oct 8 shows since Sept 9 most of the earlier hours are via Thailand instead of SL) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 550, Oct 15 at 1231 UT, full ID for XEPL FM and AM, Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, ``La Super-Estación``. 5000/150 watts per IRCA. Our sunrise-skip window is latening, with bottom of the band still open, our Enid sunrise today 1239. In a couple sesquiweeks it will surpass 1300 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950.5, Oct 15 at 0053 weak talk from pirate, very poor in noise level; 0054 into music; 0107 ``thanks for tuning in --- I`m tired of doing this stuff``. Numerous logs at
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,13176.0.html
agree it`s MAC Shortwave. Everyone reports it as 6950-AM, not noting the offset. Paying attention to precise frequencies and modes could help correlate one pirate name/transmitter with another, which they might rather avoid doing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 9775 & 3235, Oct 15 at 0057 and rechex until 0112, nothing from Radio YHWH, the Yahweh pirate, two frequencies where it has shown up before around this time (nor on 5990, 6010 as earlier) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 15 at 0052, R. Chaski carrier, until cutoff at 0101:08* which is six seconds later than yesterday, but probably more like 5.25 with margin of error (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN [and non]. 5965, Oct 15 at 0059, good signal with open carrier, and nothing on 5995 --- bet it`s REE COSTA RICA getting ready to start the wrong frequency; still dead air past 0100 but at 0103, modulating 5965 with REE, as usual a few seconds behind 9535 direct from Spain due to multiple satellite feed hops? Or other digital delays in the circuit.

By 0108 recheck, however, back on correct 5995 instead of 5965 (axually they would be better off on 5965 now that RHC is on 6000, unless the Brasilian is really active on 5965?). REE schedule is 00-04 on 5995, 04-08 on 5965, and sometimes they are reversed after 0400 too. This time at 0542 check, on correct 5965 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also EAST TURKISTAN

** TURKMENISTAN [non]. 15180, Oct 15 at 1404, fair signal, talk in Turkic language with Slavic influence: yes, R. Liberty in Turkmen, 1400-1500, 250 kW, 90 degrees from Issoudun, FRANCE, per HFCC; and another hour on 15180 at 15-16 switches to Lampertheim, Germany; why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 5840, the Tuesday frequency of BBCWS via THAILAND, Oct 15 at 1306 with Newshour, this week`s gimmick being prominent women ``guest editors``, today, Yue-Sai Kan, with the focus on China:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2013/ws-newshour-100women.html
tnx to tip via Hansjoerg Biener; we missed Chelsea Clinton yesterday. As BBC tries to prevent North Americans from hearing it on SW, this 25-degree relay via THAILAND is the best we can do; nothing much on 9740 via Singapore, and forget the higher bands. 5840 is fair at first, fading after 1330 but still audible at 1352. In case you don`t have BBC`s silly frequency-hopping pattern memorized for the 12-14 UT bihour: Wednesday 5875, Thursday 5975, Friday 5840 again, Saturday 5820 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12788-USB, Oct 14 at 2145, marine weather mentioning Bahamas, by robotic masculine voice, this one speaking slowly and easily readable. Only problem is fax QRM on the lo side, which cannot separate on the FRG-7 lacking LSB/USB narrow bandwidth. EiBi shows 12788 (without specifying USB or even SSB) as NMG, USCG New Orleans, amid one of several 35-minute broadcasts, 2130-2205; while he lists NMG fax on hi side, 12789.9 at intervening 170-minute times, obviously employing same transmitter. Fax can be avoided by tuning USB on the DX-398. This fax on lo side, per EiBi is from another USCG, NMC Point Reyes CA on 12786 at 1840-2215. IIRC, NMG is the one which at other times and frequencies has been transmitting extremely distorted SSB, but OK now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15110, Oct 14 at 2139, VOA bigsig in Bambara, M-F semihour, via Greenville, 250 kW, 94 degrees, per HFCC this frequency since 9 August. But there`s a problem: carrier drops off for a split second every two seconds, while // 13670 is OK, same power and azimuth. At 2154, 15110 is still dropping off, I suspect because the remote drive control is toggling between two settings and no one has noticed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 15580, Oct 14 at 2057, VOA concluding `African Beat` with host ``Jimmy Friendly`` (?) in Washington, just about as hyper as Matthew LaVoie. Expecting signal boost at 2100 with switch to Greenville, but no change and no break before news and 2105 `American Gold`, the Monday version of VOA Music Mix, hits from the 60s.

Latest HFCC now shows VOA English via BOTSWANA on 15580 continuously from 1500 to 2200 daily at 350 degrees; Aoki and EiBi differ slightly but none include anything from Greenville on 15580 at any time any more (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7555, Oct 15 at 0104 UT, KJES NM is very good in Spanish. You never know whether they will be on the air or not. Except on 15385: never (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7506.4, Oct 15 at 0104, as I tune in, seems like Morse code --- could it be sending ``WRNO``? Then opening ``Good News with Robert Mawire``, the station owner, pronounced Mah-WEER-ee, who has a strange (African?) accent; VG signal on very-off frequency which they always claim to be ``7505`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330-CUSB, Oct 15 at 0111, WBCQ is open carrier/dead air, while the other two are nominal: 7490 with BS, 5110-CUSB yet again this UT Tuesday with `Marion`s Attic` bonus broadcast, far better reception here than original one Sundays at 2100 on 7490. 0540 recheck, 9330 is remodulating (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 810, Oct 15 at 0551 UT as I am dozing off, song outro ``on KLVZ`` in English, i.e. Brighton CO, 430 watts night with a little lobe towards us while WHB Kansas City provides a big null, not a problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880, Oct 15 at 1229 UT, man singing hymn in presumed Navajo, 1233 into `Unshackled` in English; KHAC making SAH of about 5 Hz, but way over KRVN just before sunrise here, long before sunrise in Window Rock (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1200, Oct 15 at 1242 UT, Spanish discussion of Obamacare is dominant, no doubt not a Mexican, but WRTO Chicago, and dominant with little from WOAI, which a few minutes later is regaining from opposite direxion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6030, Oct 15 at 1257, Asian song vs prolonged pulse jamming from Cuba against nothing. Could be AIR Delhi, altho Aoki also shows CNR1 Beijing here; was hoping for something comedic from Calgary. After 1300, China radio war vs Sound of Hope (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
