Glenn Hauser logs January 21, 2016

** BRAZIL. 4892.92, Jan 21 at 0632, very poor signal with music vs CODAR, the exact offset previously logged for R. Novo Tempo, Campo Grande MS.

4824.93, Jan 21 at 0632, JBA carrier vs CODAR, presumably Rádio Canção Nova, Cachoeira Paulista SP, at its offset. Both these have Doppler-flutter on them, due to K-6 propagation disturbance, unusual from such southerly signals. WWV reported at 0600:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 20 January follow.
Solar flux 100 and estimated planetary A-index 25.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0600 UTC on 21 January was 6.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level occurred.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be moderate.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G2 level are expected``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 6200, Jan 21 at 1258, song could be in English, unseems Chinese intonation, S7-S9 with flutter, 1259 Chinese announcement and 1300 ID with music background, but can`t copy them. Presumably is V. of Jinling, Nanjing rather than PBS Xizang (Tibet) also scheduled.

6145, Jan 21 at 1300 I also check here for PBS Qinghai, Xining, an hour before the radio war erupts, but only a JBA carrier (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5990, Jan 21 at 1253, surprised to find S9+20 RHC here instead of 6000 with `Despertar con Cuba` --- wake up! 5990 is the frequency only for CRI relays at 23-01 UT. Still 5990 during news past 1303, most of which somehow concerns Cuban involvement in various Latin American countries.

6000 has been scheduled at 12-14 UT, altho missing from Aoki. EiBi has it from Bauta site; but 5990 at 23-01 as from Quivicán site. And of course, all RHC broadcasts are missing from HFCC because Arnie, our friend in Habana, won`t negotiate with --- ugh --- yanqui imperialist Americans. BTW, the A-16 HFCC conference is imminent in Istanbul amid security concerns (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 7400, Jan 21 at 1301, Sea Breeze with usual earnest YL in English on Thursdays, very poor with ACI from 7405 Cuban jamming and Radio Martí. Moved here a couple days ago from 5910 where it was in the clear. A few weeks ago it tried 7400 too before returning to a 49mb frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 9400, Jan 21 at 1354, Denge Kurdistane via PRIDNESTROVYE is about equal to Sana`a 11860, S9+10 with music; 1401 an ID for what sounds more like ``Radio Denge Kurdistanye``, and again in passing less than a minute later. I`ve been missing the Kurdish music later in this hour, paying too much attention to Yemen [non], but this is still in talk at 1408. This one fades down by 1500 unlike 11860 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGET)

** MEXICO. 720, Jan 21 at 0457 UT, 10:56 timecheck on ``La Kaliente``, so what is the temp? Phone 439-1001, 0500 mentions Colonia Universidad, Multimedios, 0501 PSAs from CNDH, another mentioning Coahuila. Quite good with WGN completely nulled, weakened by ``auroral conditions`` as tipped on IRCA list, which is why I start MW tuning during this semihour. In fact, can only hear bits of WGN by nulling this, i.e. XEDE Saltillo, supposedly 8000 day, 250 watts night. During ``normal`` conditions, XEDE QRMs WGN with a slow SAH and captures during WGN fades, especially on caradio where it can`t be nulled. Reconfirmation of this ID clarifies that the other 720 I am hearing has to be Juárez despite CST timechex on it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 720, Jan 21 at 1322 UT, Mexican station definitely loops WSW toward Juárez, i.e. XEJCC, rather than SSW toward Saltillo. Federal PSAs including for Cámara de Diputadas y Diputados, with a woman citing how many women are now elected there, but didn`t catch the number or percentage, anyhow accounting for the feminine/masculine name reference. Also for Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) about the digital TV transition, then a yelling ad for something costing ``5 pesitos`` (how many pesitos in a peso??), timecheck for 7:23! Which is CST = hora del centro de México, which is NOT the time in Juárez on MST an hour earlier. Back to hyper morning show with callers, about the benefits of dancing, ``vamos a la playa a calientar`` (let`s go to the beach to warm up --- a long way from Juárez); 7:26 TC, music, fade-out at 1329 UT. Today I don`t hear a ``Fonógrafo 720`` slogan, but see previous discussion with my Jan 13 log. Anyhow we know XEDE Saltillo is still ``La Kaliente`` as re-logged last night.

One other northwest Mexican is listed on 720, XEVU, Éxtasis Digital in Mazatlán, which I`ve yet to get past these two, altho Sinaloa is otherwise a prime sunrise spot (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 810, Jan 21 at 0502, as I dig into the pile of sigs here with the NRD-545 on N/S not very longwire, ID as ``Radio Rey, realmente musical``. That means of the 15 Mexicans listed by IRCA on this frequency I have heard the weakest, XERI Reynosa, Tamaulipas, 100 watts night (1000 watts day); tnx to auroral conditions.

Which reminds me, I haven`t heard the major signal on 810 in ages, the other Tamaulipan, XEFW Tampico, 50/1 kW. It supposedly goes off at 0400, while XERI is 24h. The two cities are 427 km = 265 miles apart, so you`d think XEFW would be QRMing XERI in daytime coverage, both supposedly non-direxional, equivalent to putting a station in Enid on 820 despite WBAP at about the same distance (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 860, Jan 21 at 0503, poetic oration in Spanish, mentions Bohemio, loops N/S with KKOW KS no problem, 0504 singing ID for Radio Recuerdo, full ID as XENL, 860-AM, 5 mil watts, 103.7 HFM, Monterrey NL, for 5 décadas, from Multimedios. Night power is supposed to be only 1.5 kW, but let`s not get into that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA [non]. 7325-, Jan 21 when CRI Japanese stops a few seconds past 1357*, NO signal at all, no JBA carrier, so is Wantok Radio Light off again? I had been able at least to detect it on the lo side the last few days (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAJIKISTAN [and non]. 4790, Jan 21 at 1249, very poor carrier vs CODAR, and I think I hear some music, so is it CNR1 jammer already for the 1300 BBC Uzbek semihour? The jammer has been on 4970 by mistake for a over a month, and there I hear one very weak signal, presumably AIR Shillong. No, Ron Howard says the BBC 4790 signal today was already on with carrier at 1247; and CNR1 jammer was already on 4970 at 1246. BTW, the BBC 4790 1300-1330 Uzbek via DB has failed to show up in HFCC B-15 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1809 monitoring: confirmed first SW broadcast, the 1230 Thursday Jan 21 one, at 1244 midpoint check on WRMI 9955, S9+10 good with no jamming. Next:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 830, Jan 21 at 0519 UT, I check the Spanish station dominant here with WCCO auroraled-out, just in case it`s something more Latin than only WFNO Norco LA. Nope, it`s United Statesian, with a string of Ad Council PSAs in Spanish, including understood.org twice, which is about ADHD and children`s learning disabilities. 0521 UT ID as ``Fabulosa 830 AM, música todo el día``. Even with non-auroral conditions, WFNO does amazingly well for 750 watts beamed into the Gulf at night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** YEMEN [non]. 11860, Jan 21 at 1312, I start monitoring R. Sana`a to track how the signal comes up. Now there is only a JBA carrier. At 1332 it`s up to S1; 1339 S2; 1341 S3-4 with talk now detectable; 1342 S5-6; 1345 S7-9 with phone interview; 1348, S9-S9+10, i.e. up to maximum which continues for the next hour+. There was no abrupt increase as in a site change, but a fadeup around our sunrise which today was 1340 UT. Continued mostly talk, but by 1434, still S9+10 with music; and cut to Maghrib sunset call to prayer at 1454:19, which is 9.5 seconds *earlier* than yesterday at 1454:28.5, so out of step again, and will have to catch up before long as today`s gaisma.com sunset in Sana`a was 1455 and in Aden, 1456 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15341-USB, Jan 21 at 1403, 2-way at first sounds like Chinese intonation, but then I hear some Spanish words such as ``coño`` and ``cambio``, but with very strange colloquial accent; INTRUDER (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
