Glenn Hauser logs March 27-28, 2016

** ALGERIA [non]. 12060, March 27 at 2025, Qur`an at poor S6, i.e. RTA via FRANCE now at 19-21 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRALIA. After getting Japan on 774 & 747, I should see how 120m is doing. 2325, March 28 at 1219, S7 music, from VL8T, Tennant Creek NT; tuning up to 2485, March 28 at 1220: wow, S9+10 with song, best I`ve heard this in a long time, and slightly stronger than // 4835 VL8A Alice Springs. DJ outro about ``album for a Monday night`, Trisha Yearwood and Coco Taylor. Then interview with a singer; 1223 mentions Alice Springs, plays some blues; by 1234, 2485 is weakening compared to 4835 with weather, 1235 promo for ABC Alice Springs which is apparently the program source for all of them. Only 4835 is listenable every morning, nothing special DX-wise (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL [and non]. 6135.1, March 28 at 0341, approx. center of motorboating noise. Suspect it`s the R. Aparecida transmitter out of whack as there is no carrier on its usual 6135.2, and this mess is closer to that than to 6134.8, haunt of RSC Bolivia, likely off by now anyway. (HFCC A-16 reminds us that Al-Hiswah, Yemen used to sign on 6135 at 0300, but that`s been gone for a long time.) Furthermore, the bonker is back on the lo side, itself centred approx. 6131.6 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 15590, March 28 at 1329+1330, CNR1 strong but with heavy flutter and CCI from jamming target IBB in Mandarin via THAILAND during this hour. // CNR1 jammer on 7385 at 1334 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 7325-, March 28 at 1253, JBA carrier slightly on the lo side, no doubt Wantok Radio Light, as CRI Japanese has just cut 7325.0 off the air early at 1253*, widening the window for Wantok Radio Light, PNG before CRI resumes at *1258:47; 1300 IS, IDs in Chinese and Japanese. During this break, site has shifted from Jinhua to Xi`an, and weakened here. Makes no sense to cut off programming in progress earlier than natural break circa 1257; Ron Howard first noted this a few days ago, but it may not last. Suspect misprogrammed automation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5040, March 28 at 0353, RHC in Spanish with big hum when listening on AM, wobbling carrier with BFO. Wiggle that patchcord? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. The DentroCuban Jamming Command is all confused about when and where to hit Radio Martí: At 1247 UT March 28, 5980 has wall of noise but Martí isn`t there. 6030 has neither but a weak algo, dare I hope CFVP or more likely Asian. 7405 has RM good over jamming; 9805 RM is very good with no jamming, baseball news; 11930 is already jammed with no Martí (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 4500, March 28 at 1231, mixture of talk and music in presumed Mongolian, unique frequency of PBS Xinjiang, Urumqi, but mixed with ute hash. I quickly find the other four language services also audible to varying degrees: 4850 is S9 with weak modulation; 4980 and 5060 are S7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 9560, March 28 at 0325, S9+25 in Swahili. It`s NHK via MADAGASCAR at 0315-0400, ex-7 MHz band. See also UGANDA [non]! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 9400, March 28 at 1301, nothing but Chinese from FEBC, so I know Denge Kurdistanye must have ascended to usual A-season frequency 11600.

11600, March 28 at 1306, there it is, S7 with Qur`an. Some local hash can be evaded by USB tuning; fades some at 1316, but still there at 1336; about S8 at 1340 music; better S9 at 1400 during YL news in presumed Kurdish. Now the question is, what sites? In recent past has used PRIDNESTROVYE, France, Bulgaria.

HFCC A-16 lists only KCH = Grigoriopol`, Pridnestrovye/Moldova at 03-21, 300 kW, 116 degrees. But March 27 in the 13-17 UT period, Ivo Ivanov in Sofia could tell it was really BULGARIA, as he was getting the second harmonic too on 23200. He adds that at 17-19 it`s via France, with 3 minutes of dead air at some point. He also files this under IRAN [non], even tho it`s for TURKEY, the dreaded PKK terrorists there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR. 17640, March 27 at 1800, fanfare, ``Good day, and welcome to our first broadcast …`` soon punxuated by a vuvuzela blast, mentioning South Africa, and into Proverbs citation. Sounds like the same show I heard at 0400 on 9480. This is S9+10 or 45433, deep fades impeding copy; 1827 gospel choir from Africa singing ``Hosanna``. Still no ID heard as ``Madagascar World Voice``. I`m checking out the remainder of the scheduled broadcasts on the First Day:

13710, March 27 at 2023, MWV in Arabic, fair at S7.

11615, March 27 at 2150, MWV in Chinese, S9+10, 2151 sounds like a love song in English, but no doubt Jesus the object of affexion.

11770, March 27 at 2200, MWV Arabic at S9+10; but simultaneous 9455 in Chinese is a JBA carrier at very different azimuth.

9535, March 27 at 2330, this hour is supposed to be Chinese, but if on, is totally blocked by Habana.

9600, March 28 at 0010, frequency is clear but *no* signal for English allegedly to Central Africa in the middle of their night. The last two come from a different `updated` version of the schedule via Ivo Ivanov, than I quoted previously:

``Updated A-16 of Madagascar World Voice
0000-0100 on  9600 MWV 100 kW / 040 deg to CeAf English
0100-0200 on  9665 MWV 100 kW / 040 deg to SoAs English
0200-0300 on  6190 MWV 100 kW / 250 deg to SoAm Spanish
0300-0400 on  6150 MWV 100 kW / 265 deg to SoAm Spanish
0400-0500 on  9480 MWV 100 kW / 295 deg to CeAf English
1800-1900 on  9570 MWV 100 kW / 355 deg to EaEu Russian
1800-1900 on 17640 MWV 100 kW / 310 deg to WeAf English
1900-2000 on 11945 MWV 100 kW / 355 deg to N/ME Arabic
2000-2100 on 13710 MWV 100 kW / 340 deg to EaAf Arabic
2100-2200 on 11615 MWV 100 kW / 325 deg to WeEu Chinese
2200-2300 on  9455 MWV 100 kW / 055 deg to EaAs Chinese
2200-2300 on 11770 MWV 100 kW / 325 deg to NoAf Arabic
2300-2400 on  9535 MWV 100 kW / 055 deg to EaAs Chinese``

Despite the gaps, MWV has already proven as we expected that it will be easily heard off-target in North America, just like the numerous MGLOB relays from the other Madagascar site. (And I continue to wonder why WCB never had any interest in using MGLOB during the protracted delays in getting its own station going?) With two exceptions (9665, 9535), the chosen frequencies have proven to be free of interference. Further chex:

6150, March 28 at 0312, MWV Spanish as ``La Voz Alegre`` is S9+25.

9480, March 28 at 0400, NO signal! I keep listening and finally cuts on at *0403.5, S9+10 joining program in progress, a narrative about a trip; 0409, pro-Jesus propaganda, and the English hour is attributed to African Pathways, http://www.africanpathways.org with postal address in Franklin TN (just like KNLS Alaska); 0411 an Afro-Caribbean song nostalgic to the DJ.

17640, March 28 at 1758 I`m standing by for another try for this English broadcast. *1759:17 carrier on, 1800:03 fanfare and sign-on ONLY as ``African Pathways Radio``, vuvuzela blast, co-hosts have African and American accents; today`s theme ``Life`s Journey``. The Pathway being: ``to immortality`` (? Evidence, please?). NO mention of Madagascar World Voice, even tho their transmitter building is labeled MWV as are its HFCC registrations. Anyhow, good signal if one cared to spend an hour with this, some deep fading.

With Spanish IDing as ``La Voz Alegre``, evidently each language service has a different name, so what are they calling themselves, exactly (and in translation), in Arabic, Chinese and Russian? Yes, the world`s newest shortwave station, but we lament that some religious groups still have virtually no presence on SW, e.g. animists of which there must be millions (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, March 28 at 1203 UT, Mexican NA, 1204 YL ID for Radio Ciudadana; KSKY Dallas nulled as much as possible, but México DF is only about 30 degrees further clockwise, as this is the IMER station XEDTL, 50/1 kW (remember when 660 was commercial XERPM?), rather than Aguascalientes, Monterrey or Ciudad Delicias which I hear more often on 660. IRCA Mexican Log says XEDTL format is world music, the name meaning female citizen, but then goes into historical talk about the Castillo de Chapultepec and Santiago Hernández. Most of México including DF will not go on DST until next Sunday, whence the sign-on should shift to *1100 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7610-, March 28 at 0331, hard rock music, very poor S4. Like heard March 27 at 0141: Could it be Radio Latino, known frequency at other dayparts for Italian pirate? NO, here`s the answer, tnx to Rob Ross in Ontario, ODXA yg, who also heard it and got a lengthy reply saying it`s from the USA:

Red Beacon Radio: ``I typically leave the transmitter on during the weekends but at low power consisting of 15 watts. Yesterday`s transmission was also at 15 watts with the exception around 2300 UT when I was operating at 200 watts for about an hour or so to see how well the signal would propagate during "long" conditions. I am fairly new on the air but not new to the scene as I have been a pirate for more than 30 years focused mainly on the purchase, design and construction of the gear more than being a DJ. The programming content is by remote from an anonymous DJ through "myradiostream.com" who has been playing a various mix of music but has not gone on the air yet and spoken live. . .``

Rob had heard it March 27 at 1149-1220, with no announcements, so it`s unclear how he identified and e-mailed it. O, maybe from all these reports of March 26 and 27:
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. UNIDENTIFIED. 6919.9-AM, March 28 at 0337, only thing on the pirate band is this S5 very poor carrier with song. Asking for trouble, cozying up to 6915 WRMIBS, of all things, but yet that`s weak enough here not to QRM it. Nothing on 6925, so maybe one of those stations slid down (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 7325-, March 28 at 1253, JBA carrier slightly on the lo side, no doubt Wantok Radio Light, as CRI Japanese has just cut off the air early at 1253*, widening the window for WRL before CRI resumes at *1258:47 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See CHINA

** SUDAN [non?]. 7204.0, March 28 at 0401, fair signal is just barely modulated, Arabic? Omdurman was thought to have shifted here, but now I also detect a JBA carrier on 7205 so something else may be going on. Sudan is known for running carriers 1 kHz away from R. Dabanga to jam it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TIBET [non]. 11513, March 28 at 1305, very poor signal, presumably V. of Tibet via TAJIKISTAN on characteristic split channel. Aoki as of March 18 had it on this frequency but not during this segment.

15562, March 28 at 1327, JBA carrier, presumed V. of Tibet via TAJIKISTAN on latest frequency jumble, unlisted yet but has been on 15563 previously. Algo on 15560 maybe CNR1 jammer (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 9515, March 28 at 0319, VOT confirmed on usual A-season frequency, ex-9650 [now with BBC! See UK], and an hour earlier, to North America. Is S9+20 with folk tale in English; but at 0326 recheck I am astounded to hear the ``Frage des Monats`` in GERMAN, along with same jingle for that in all language services; reply to deutsch@trt.net.tr to possibly win a nice little gift (English word, not German!). I wonder if somebody played the wrong cart/file during the English broadcast, or if the whole hour had somehow switched to German. 0328 followed by music break and I never get back to hear whether further talk would be in English or German.

15450+, March 28 at 1325, tune in just in time for last iteration of VOT IS following 1230 English, fair signal, off at 1326* before I can measure how far off to the hi side it is, slightly. Anyhow, seems promising for audibility in North America beyond target Europe (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UGANDA [non]. 5915, UT Monday March 28 at 0317, JBA carrier only detectable in huge splash from new A-16 5910 NHK relay via FRANCE (and worse than from 5920 WHRI); as Ron Howard concluded the night before, this explains why Lead Radio Africa via SOUTH AFRICA was scheduled to shift from 5910 to 5915 for its 0300-0400 UT Mon/Tue/Fri broadcast --- despite 5915 being the forever-frequency of ZNBC Zambia, its last remaining SW outlet, obvious to us but info withheld from HFCC. As of March 28, HFCC still shows Sentech on 5915 at 03-04, days 2/3/5.

Now there`s no way to tell which one I am detecting, or both. The rest of this hour from NHK in Japanese seems to be a besuboro gemu, with continuous crowd noise and even band music in background, as noted at 0345 with some ``straik`` called. The splash relents after 0400 with relatively calm newscast, but that`s too late for the 5915 station(s) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non?]. 9650, March 28 at 0313, BBCWS in English, S9+20. Unlisted frequency I am checking following this inquiry:

``Glenn, I have been scanning around for new A16 signals this evening. I have been hearing a good BBC signal in English this evening UT Monday 3/28 since before 0200 until now past 0225 on 9650. I don't see anything anywhere listed for this. Any idea where it is coming from? Ryan Ellegood, Union City, TN``

Yes, it does not even appear in the HFCC data as of March 28:

I find it`s // but slightly echoing with 9440 at about same S9+20 level. That one is Oman at 03-04 only; I was expecting Ascension for both, which could still be the case for 9650, continuing past 0400 after 9440 is off. I suppose it will show up eventually in the schedules. Hmm, keep in mind too that 9650 is the daytime frequency for Radio Sonder Grense at 07-17 UT; maybe a SENTECH mixup (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1818 monitoring: confirmed Sunday March 27 at 2330 on WBCQ, 9329.87-CUSB. Also confirmed UT Monday March 28 from 0301 on Area 51 webcast, and soon heard also on WBCQ 5129.7-AM; also confirmed after 0330 on WRMI 9955, VG S9+25 this time. Next:
Mon 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Tue 1100   WRMI 9955 to SSE
Tue 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Wed 1315.5 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 2100   WBCQ 7490v to WSW
Wed 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9955, UT Monday March 28 at 0321 checking WRMI prior to WOR at 0330, I am surprised to hear a jazz song in English ending with ``puta madre, oh shit``, S9+5. Is this really Radio Prague relay in English as scheduled, or some new fill music? Whew.

9955, March 28 at 0541, WRMI with Arab, then Turkish? song, eclectic music concert instead of BS after 0500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5810, March 28 at 0347, WEWN Spanish talking about Madre Angélica, including a clip of her in English, ``we have no money of our own`` voiced-over to Spanish. English on 11520 is too weak to copy. Checking now since news broke March 27 that Rita Rizzo had died on Easter Sunday, age 92, after having been an invalid for a sesquidecade, following strokes and unable to speak. Some press refers to her as ``founder`` of EWTN --- NO! She was the ``foundress``, tho possibly celibate, always wanted to assert her gender identity. Of course, WEWN talks about her incessantly anyway; burial mass will be 1600 UT Friday April 1. And they will keep playing tapes of her ad infinitum like other SW legacy stations (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 3185, March 28 at 0350-0401+, S9+45 open carrier/deadair instead of BS on WWRB. Next check at 1218, again, or I daresay, still OC/DA! Next2 check at 1225, 3185 is off, and 9370 is on now with Scourby intoning, into HyStairia. Suspect Dave was off on a flight mission, but when he or someone implemented the frequency change, discovered that modulation needed to be re-added. That`s one-up on some other SW stations which make frequency changes and yet keep their air dead (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. RF 14, March 28 at 1435 UT, KERA Dallas is in with call-letter bugs in lower right of three subchannels: 13-1 KERA-HD, 13-2, WORLD, 13-3 CREATE. Zenith STB mixes this in with OETA Oklahoma on RF 13 but also virtual 13, which always breaks up. While it lasts, a few minutes, KERA is solid. 13-3 is // OETA 13-3 also with CREATE. KERA has no 13-4 unlike OETA with KIDS.

Matches tropo maps well in minor opening from N Texas to here to Tulsa market, which is also decoding on several channels. DX QRM is blocking RF 23 KSBI OKC, and even causing breakup of our *only* local Enid TV transmitter, 3ABN`s K17JN-D; source of that no doubt being KDOR TBN megawatt in Bartlesville OK. RF 29 KTUZ is also failing to decode (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 6175, March 28 at 0339, VOV in English, usual VG signal, tnx to still being via WHRI at 0330, unlike the earlier 0100 & 0230 to North America, which have switched to 12005 via UK for A-15. And the 6175 WHRI transmitter is squealing! Need to replace some modulation modules (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 774, March 28 at 1152 and 1157-1202 UT, JBA carrier looping NW/SE and a weaker one on 747, 99% sure to be the NHK JAPAN superpowers, which are the prime trans-Pacific MW DX beacons here. Tnx to neighbor Richard N Allen near Perry OK, who has been getting these the past few mornings, reminding us that they are back in season. I find no others in 9-kHz steps from 531 up to 1053 kHz, nor on 1548, where Australia recently made it to Michigan around same time. QRM from domestic stations can be intense, especially KRMG 740 Tulsa; and  KSPI 780 Stillwater OK which started modulating at 1200 UT. Enid sunrise today: 1223 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4766.0, March 28 at 1229 check, mystery open carrier still here averaging about S8 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5910, March 28 at 1237, as I tune by, some SSB says ``zero degrees`` and into digital burst, but it`s 0.5 kHz above or below, and doesn`t come back by 1245 as I wanted to determine which. Probably US military tho would not expect MARS to invade the broadcast band like this (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1936 UT March 28
