WRMI frequency change

As of 0000 UTC December 1, TruNews and all other programs on WRMI that have been broadcast on 7455 kHz will now be heard on 7730 kHz. This change is to avoid some radioteletype interference on 7455 kHz. WRMI has previously used 7730 kHz for relay broadcasts of Radio Taiwan International to Central America. The Taiwan relay at 0300-0400 UTC has recently been changed to 5985 kHz, thus freeing up 7730 kHz for use from 0000-0800 UTC on our beam to Western North America with TruNews and other programs.

Revised RAC 0-30 MHz Amateur Band Plan released

The revised RAC 0-30 MHz Band Plan has been released with the effective date of December 1, 2015. This replaces the January 1, 2015 Band Plan version. 

It incorporates several updates to reflect feedback received on the earlier version. The Band Plan graphics have also been changed to improve readability and make it easier to determine which segments are recommended for which modes, especially for those who are colour-blind.

The RAC 0-30 MHz Band Plan is available on the RAC web site: wp.rac.ca/rac-0-30-mhz-band-plan or by navigating through the “How to Start?” tab on the RAC home page. A downloadable PDF file is available by clicking the image. The French version may be found at wp.rac.ca/qc/rac-du-plan-de-bande-0-30-mhz

Hats off to Vince d’Eon, VE6LK for the many hours of work preparing the graphics through numerous revisions. Thanks to the RAC Band Planning Committee, chaired by Al Penney VO1NO, with members Mel Martin VE2DC, Ken Asmus VA3KA, Frank VanderZande VE7AV, and Don Moman VE6JY for the over one-year commitment in reviewing the old band plans and current practices. ** AUSTRALIA. 2325, Nov 29 at 1320, Oz talk at S6 from VL8T Tennant Creek NT; while 2485 VL8K Katherine is a JBA carrier; why such a disparity? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6100, Sunday Nov 29 at 0723, RHC is S9+30 but almost dead air --- turning up the volume, I can hear RHC Spanish which isn`t supposed to be on any frequency at this hour. 0700-0730 Sundays is when Esperanto is scheduled to air --- so we`re getting there, unlike last week when the transmitter was not on at all. I wonder if they`ve been misrunning it at 0600 instead, like Wolfgang Büschel caught them doing a few weeks ago? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 5920, Nov 29 at 1325, Qur`an with long pauses at S6. VIRI has just started its 3-hour Kurdish service, 500 kW, supposedly non-direxional from Kamalabad. Always neat to hear Iran on 50m at this time of day, by grayline: 1320 sunset today at Tehran, close enough to Kamalabad; 1323 Enid sunrise, so may well be short-path.

BTW, someone remarked that Qur`an is not ``musical`` --- on the contrary, it`s totally musical and recitations can be enjoyed pro-arte by those not burdened by the baggage of belief. What he meant was never instrumental accompaniment, but a cappella, if you`ll pardon the expression (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. By midday Sunday, we`re getting some thawing in Enid, a couple degrees above freezing, but a long way to go. Ice is starting to drop off our antennas onto the roof. Thankfully, still haven`t lost AC power here.

Follow-up to yesterday`s outage report, as of morning of Nov 29, UT:

530, Nov 29 at 1332 UT, `K530AM`, Vance AFB is off again, and I believe was also yesterday for the ice storm. So much for it being of any use in an emergency situation! 

1460, KZUE El Reno is still off, but I can detect two JBA carriers at 1710 UT, one surely 11 kW KCLE Burleson-Cleburne-Fort Worth TX, the other perhaps 1 kW ND KKOY Chanute KS.

BTW, a TV ad for an Indian casino tells us that Reno means reindeer, certainly an odd name for anyplace in OK, or NV. My Spanish dixionary confirms that from English to Spanish but not from Spanish to English. Okies pronounce it ``REE-noh``, never as in Spanish, tho I am now wondering how SS KZUE pronounces it, if ever recovers.

96.9, KQOB missing last night is back on as of 1608 UT.

RF 15, KTBO ``14`` as of 1600 UT, has also come to life after blackout all day yesterday. RF 46, KOCM is still on at Bad level, but black as revealed on Cable 6, by 1825 UT.

Circa 1725 UT FM bandscan, referencing yesterday`s obs: Still off: 88.3, 90.1 (but KHCC? Radio Kansas unimpeded also classical), 90.3, 92.1 (KAMG-LP, or is it? seems to be a weak noisy carrier), 94.3, 97.5 (KPAK, but weak music probably Tulsa), 99.7 (still Spanish from Kansas instead), 105.7 (KROU still audible, not KRDR).

Newly off today: 90.5 KGVV Goltry; 95.7, KXLS Lahoma/Enid

Like KWOU 88.1 Woodward, some stations are on but at reduced power due to icing, notably local Enid 103.1 KOFM, ID at 1726, but *much* weaker e.g. than ex-KOFM 104.1 OKC. 93.7 KSPI & 105.1 KOSB Stillwater/Perry also seem weakened, and at first thought they were off.

Still nothing on KUCO homepage about being off, and the streaming is still off too at of 1745 UT Nov 29. I inquired of Kimberly Powell who replied at 1758:

``Hi Glenn, we're back on the air since earlier this morning but at very low power and in analog only. I've emailed our UCO IT liaison that he can now get the online stream back. We should be back at a higher power tomorrow once things thaw a bit.  I'm hoping Julio will go online remotely and re-establish our online stream today. Thank you for your patience! ** OKLAHOMA. 3030 kHz, Nov 29 at 1317, ESPN and big hum, no doubt a sum of local KCRC 1390 ESPN and its sibling station KZLS 1640, on the R-75. Probably receiver overload as the transmitter sites are far apart. Meanwhile, 1640 itself is still dead air except for big hum at 1351 Nov 29 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOMALILAND. 7120, Nov 29 at 1327, very poor but constant AM carrier, lite CW QRhaM, no doubt R. Hargeisa intruder by long-path across the Indian and Pacific Oceans; nominally in English during the middle third of this hour only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 9990, Nov 29 at 1427, song in uncertain language, jazzy YL with piano, until she`s chopped off at 1430:04*. How rude! HFCC shows it`s IBB Farsi, ergo Radio Farda, 250 kW, 316 degrees via Iranawila at 1330-1430 (following 5 hours via Kuwait, same service) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 12035, Nov 29 at 1329 tune-in, no signal from VOT: here we go again, late closing on 17755 following German. 12035 cuts on at *1329.6 with last bit of IS and ID in English, 1330 accurate timesignal and opening English, but too poor to copy at S3. 

BTW, would you believe that Voice of Russia is still on SW? Don`t, despite HFCC still having a bunch of registrations for B-15, including 1100-1300 in DRM from Irkutsk on 12035. And mostly non-DRM all over other bands from 6 to 17 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 9740, Nov 29 at 1427, no signal from anything, despite lots of other frequencies with E Asian stations. This used to be a major BBCWS channel via Singapore. Now in HFCC I see it`s on from 10 to 14 UT only, ceding 9740 to RBA after 1400 --- but it`s not on there either (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7302-USB, Nov 29 at 1352, Air Force MARS net, two stations heard fonetikally being AFA6AC and AFE6VC. Top Google hits on the first call all lead to hex color codes! Adding MARS to search terms reduces to only 7 hits, none of them any good. Top hits on second call lead to US license plates! Adding MARS to that gets three relevant hits including this, mostly templates and instruxions, but not the info I seek:


The CS tab for callsigns does not list either of the above, but includes some Navy and Army MARS calls. The brief info in the original hit does indicate that AFE6VC is in Texas. Another hit as of 1/1/13 had AFE6VC as a Vacant call, among many others. Well, wasted enough time on that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRELAND. 3413-USB, Nov 29 at 0141 YL with fight weather, Britishish accent, very poor S6 vs noise level, and can`t copy locations mentioned, but seems usual mix of English and metric units: ceilings in feet, visibilities in km, temps and dewpoints Celsius, winds in knots, altimeter/barometer in millibars; finally ``Shannon VOLMET`` ID twice at 0145. ** NORTH AMERICA. 6950.0-USB, Nov 29 at 0106, sad song by YL, 0107 Wolverine Radio ID, at S9+30, equivalent level to WBCQ on 5109.7-CUSB and 7490, but 9330 is not on (yet); also mighty KBC via 125,000 watts in Germany on 7395 is only S9+35. Wolverine must be running hefty power level for a pirate. Wish I could keep listening but too much else is going on Saturday evenings! Recheck 0203 hears SSTV beeps so probably closing down. ** OKLAHOMA. The long-predicted ice storm has indeed hit us in most of western Oklahoma, causing various anomalies among broadcasters November 28 noted as follows, all times UT:

At 1645 I notice that KTBO ``14``, RF-15, Trinity, OKC, is black and silent --- all 5 subchannels on the air at Good level, but nothing being transmitted. STL problem? Power off at studio, not transmitter? Suddenlink Cable ch 3 in Enid displays the last image transmitted on main channel instead of black: woman playing a guitar to a puppet. This freeze-frame stays up all day and evening, still there at 0600 UT Nov 29!

KOCB ``34`` RF 33, I notice now has the new Comet network on 34-3. SF movie of humans vs tentacles at 0540 UT Nov 29, `Species`.

1910 UT during opera, KUCO 90.1 Edmond/OKC dumps off the air, and remains off all afternoon/evening. At first I thought they were back on with dead carrier, but that turned out to be produced by the R75 when on radiating at 90.0 MHz, too close to the YB-400 I was checking for FM. KUCO website says nothing about being off the air; and the webcast is also down. http://www.kucofm.com I hope it`s only a power outage (rampant across OKC metro), not ice damage to antenna, etc.

On MW, the only station found to be missing is 1460 KZUE, not surprising as El Reno is very hard hit by power outages.

1640, later at 0151 UT Nov 29, KZLS Enid-OKC is dead air; maybe due to icing/power outage somewhere, but it doesn`t take that much for this station to lose modulation/program feed. Wish they`d turn the transmitter off too. I can hear WTNI etc., under it.

At 2330 UT I notice that Cable 6 in Enid, KOCM, Daystar is black and silent like KTBO ``14``, RF 15, and then find the same on KOCM`s original RF 46, still same at 0537 UT Nov 29, i.e. on but transmitting nothing; couldn`t happen to two more useless stations. Its on-air signal here is usually barely Good, often breaking up into video art. Too bad Suddenlink didn`t capture a frame of that to show for the next multi-hours, just black.

96.9, KQOB, Enid-OKC, Nov 29 at 0202 and 0509 recheck is OFF, unlike earlier; from its remote site west of Crescent midway.

105.7, KRDR Alva, must be off, since at 0218 Nov 29 I am not hearing any stupid sports talk, but Latin/jazz music, matching the schedule of KROU de KGOU, `Global Jazz Wire` at 8-10 pm CT Sats. On the PL-880 I have to off-tune it to 105.73 to avoid local 105.5 translator still on. Tried to // it to 88.1 whence KWOU Woodward is sometimes audible but site says ``KWOU in Woodward is on reduced power because of ice on antenna.`` KGOU++ have plenty of streaming options:

The situation at WOR HQ: a few quick power glitches, not enough to reset clox, and no loss of power --- yet. Several thousand customers in Enid are down, and almost 80K in the OG&E service area covering only part of OK. 

Our trees have taken a beating, with many broken limbs and branches from heavy ice layers. Some of them have fallen on our main longwire, which hasn`t broken yet, but will be easy to repair once the debris is cleared. So far I think the C-490 TV antenna larger elements have not broken off like happened to its predecessor a few years ago. ** SRI LANKA [and non]. 11905, Nov 29 at 0111:54 tune-in, as soon as Chaski is off, find JBA carrier here, but it`s not SLBC, since its much stronger carrier cuts on at *0114:10; adding modulation of two bits of music other than the one usually heard, 2+1 mis-timepips ending at 0115:16.5, and ``Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation`` YL sign-on in S Asian language: speech modulation is somewhat suptorted unlike the bit of music. Recheck at 0213, now it`s a JBA carrier, so SLBC already off or not? The other 11905 from 01 is per HFCC, a 100 kW, 163 degree transmitter of CNR Beijing until 09 in Chinese (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330.0-CUSB, UT Sunday Nov 29 at 0220, find WBCQ is ON! While it was not an hour earlier, and didn`t think anything was scheduled at this hour and day: monolog by an unID guy with continuous music bed, talking about HAVE GOALS (not Have Gold as I thought at first). He is a street artist in Milwaukee and suggests that shortwave enthusiasts should Google that name to see what he is talking about, a sticker with image of a girlchild`s face and that slogan. It`s 3 x 5 inches and black & white. His new gallery show is called ``Truth Be Told``. Says this will be broadcast 4 times, not online, no app for it [so better hear it now]. Mentions having a show made up of guns and knives he found in city sewers under Milwaukee: not sure if that is a previous or current show. 

At 0229, ID as ``Have Goals World Service``; there were showcards at the gallery referring Milwaukee people to this SW broadcast. Have Goals started 5 years ago, and developed a subculture around it, overwhelmingly positive. He got the idea from the side of a train; is not profiting from this but hopes it makes people think about making something of their lives. By 0237 I realize we are into a repeat of what I was hearing when first tuned in.

Checked later, as expected, there is nothing about this on the WBCQ homepage, nor on the 9330 program schedule. You had to run across it, or find out from one of his showcards in Milwaukee (or tune in quickly once I posted about it on the DXLD yg --- did anyone else then hear it?) ** ALBANIA [and non]. 7469.98, Nov 28 at 0224, R. Tirana is certainly on tonite, S7 to S9 with IS running past 0230 to sign-on starting at 0230:41. Klara`s announcement has changed to cite 7470 for this broadcast so it must be sticking; but sounds like she gives time for the earlier 7465 broadcast as ``2100 to 2030``, and into news. My first chance to check since I found it missing three nights ago. 

Wolfgang Büschel was also monitoring this night, via a remote in New Jersey: ``7469.979 kHz frequency in 49mb from the Shijak broadcast center site. Signal strength was S=9+20dB tonight. All in English language. No distortion, no interference on that channel.``

7425, meanwhile, the frequency we persuaded R. Tirana not to use, is still occupied at 0225 Nov 28 by Vatican Radio mixing with Martí as leapfrog of 7305 over 7365 at Greenville, with the VR IS audible at 0227. And also stray Cuban pulse jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7615.00-USB, Nov 28 at 0220, very formal net with YL NCS strong, asking others to making general calls, those very weak. Calls mentioned sounded like Broadway 51, 0222 Treadway 19, then announces net is moving to NNB (fonetikaly), and that announcement also repeated by others. I think it must be TRIBLADE, i.e. CAP (Civil Air Patrol), as in this similar log:

** U S A. 9330, Nov 28 at 0115, WBCQ is certainly on tonite and propagating to the tune of S9+25, but it`s Blalock the Blaster, so quick tune to the others with UT Sat`s `Allan Weiner Worldwide`: 7490 is also S9+25, and 5109.7-CUSB running 29 seconds behind, is S9+30. Later in the hour he`s explaining to a caller the different color TV systems, how the FCC first approved the CBS mechanical scan in the early 50`s, but in a year replaced it with the RCA electronic system, which lasted until the DTV transition; also another way to fool the eye into seeing some color on black and white TV. Around 0215, 7490 seems to drop power and then go off; shortly later 5109.7 too, back on at 0219. Meanwhile I have been hearing terrible splash QRM from WRNO 7504.75 across 7490 and beyond. By 0233 check AWWW has concluded, BS is on 7490, and the video game show on 5109.7, `Grogcast` whose nominal timing is 0200-0300 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7504.75, Nov 28 at 0215, WRNO S9+45 blob centered approx. here, extremely distorted and splattering as far as 7490 WBCQ and beyond, 7520 WWCR and beyond, both of which are weaker to start with and can`t muscle aside the crap on their own frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, more on the peculiar situation of WTWW-2 (not -3 as misnumbered in last report). After carrying Dark Matter programs during the night and day on Friday Nov 27 as detailed before, at next check 0114 UT Sat Nov 28, these have been removed and replaced by dead air, and still so at 0150. But by next check 0212, a bluegrass version of ``Jingle Bells`` is playing; 0229 Ted-in-a-reverb-well is selling some radio; and more Xmas carols. Signal is blasting in during music such that it almost merits AM-S wideband reception on the NRD-545. But bah, enough already with the carols. 

At 0118, 9475, WTWW-1 has faded way down but some hymn is on SFAW; while 12105, WTWW-3 is a JBA carrier, presumably still dead air (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1590, UT Sat Nov 28 at 0154 UT, a basketball game, quick ad for an overhead door company, phone 289-2211. Game is in Steel (sp?) Gym, fades out and in and out.
