Glenn Hauser logs August 28-29, 2015

** BOLIVIA. 4409.76, Aug 29 at 0123, JBA carrier, presumably R. Eco, Reyes, listed 500 watts on 4409. Nothing around 4451, but algo around 4699, the other WOOB Bolivians (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOLIVIA. 5952.47, Aug 29 at 0109, Radio Pio Doce, Siglo Veinte (XII/XX), measured here at 0109 Aug 29, very poor S 7-8 peaks in talk (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11815, Aug 29 at 0117, R. Brasil Central with music, just S3 but no spurs blocking it --- until a trace of some from the lower side circa 11812 out of 11780 RNA, of course (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COLOMBIA. 5910 & 6010, Aug 29 at 0110, no signals from HJDH and HJDH (but a JBA carrier on 6010.0; HFCC shows only possibility is a 5 kW reserve transmitter in Belarus, 23 hours a day; more likely a 5 kW Brasilian, unbeknownst to HFCC, but not off-frequency?). It seems the last time the Colombians were heard was May 23 as in DXLD 15-21.

I asked HJDH QSL manager Rafael Rodríguez R. in Bogotá why they are off, and received this rather surprising reply, original Spanish in the dxldyg and next DXLD; here in my translation: (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Best Regards, Mr. Hauser, Earlier this year, Martin Stendal was linked by the Colombian Attorney General in an investigation for alleged support he would give the Colombian guerrillas of the FARC. He was accused by two former guerrillas seeking economic and legal benefits, incriminating Martin. The investigation determined that the work he carried out in no way could be interpreted as support for the FARC, because what he does is just evangelize and seek peace in Colombia.

Among the accusations, it was mentioned that he used the shortwave broadcasters to send encrypted messages, something that was not proven, but during the period of the investigation he preferred to keep them off the air. At the end of May he was exonerated of any accusations.

He also suffered the loss of his father, who started the evangelical work here in Colombia. After that I could not really have direct contact with him. I am informed he has decided to wait until all the investigation calms down and he is not currently in Colombia.

The organization decided to perform preventive maintenance on the equipment which already had some flaws, but an ongoing problem in the area where the transmitters are located is the electricity supply (ups and downs, absence, etc.). After the maintenance it was decided to hold off until the situation is regularized, through a power plant fueled by diesel.

Actually I have no official information about ceasing broadcasts on shortwave, but all the work that Martin and his organization developed is going through changes. I am confident that sometime soon they will reactivate transmissions.

PS. I send you some links about the situation experienced by Martin with Colombian Attorney General, which has been solved for the better:

American missionary with alleged links to the FARC has been released:

The failed assignment of the prosecution in the case of the missionary:

Capture of the American missionary is a false positive --- FARC
(Rafael Rodríguez R., Colombia, Aug 27, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 1620, Aug 29 at 0138, R. Rebelde with excited commentary, but NOT // 5025, which is to be expected as 1620 then mentions ``sorteo de béisbol --- de la FM Radio Rebelde`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 12070 & 11935 at 0113 Aug 29; 9965.2 at 0129 Aug 29; and 9315 at 0133 Aug 29, all R. Cairo frequencies are JBA carriers, so I can`t really evaluate the modulation: cagey! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 9755-9760-9765, Aug 28 at 1305, DRM noise, not scheduled, but likely RNZI during what is normally a DRM hiatus, even for the special HFCC broadcasts. 9760 had been on their DRM schedule later before moving to 7330. Now from Aug 29, DRM should resume sporadic RNZI schedule as-needed for relays, mostly on weekdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6930-USB, Aug 29 at 0100, pirate music, 0101 announcements in kid voices? and stops. Just missed it. Was about S5 vs storm crash level peaking S9. To HFU for the answer: KBOX.
It seems there is currently no licensed KBOX on AM, per the NRC AM Log 2015-2016 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925.16-AM, Aug 29 at 0103, JBA music, still at 0143, presumably the usual Liquid Radio, never strong enough here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Re 88.1, KWOU Woodward audio problems: received a prompt reply even tho it was after-hours on a Friday, 2236 UT Aug 28 from Patrick Roberts, Chief Engineer at mother station KGOU Norman:

``Hi Glen[n]. Thanks for the info. It seems that there is some internet link disturbance that's crept up recently in the OU network. We feed it over Tieline IP codecs. To help mask the problem, I've changed the profile on the Tieline encoder headed that way, adding 100% Forward Error Correction (basically sending the audio packets twice slightly delayed). That seems to have stopped the drop-out problem, at least at 5:30 (lots of people might have gone home at OU, lessening the problem naturally; we shall see). We normally have a very good path up to there, effectively on fiber most of the way through the same service provider. If it acts up again, I can switch out to our cellular modem for a while. I'll try to keep an eye on it for the next few days. Thanks! PR`` (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Aug 29 at *0114:11.5, carrier on from SLBC; don`t hear any music starting, but must be just too weak, as I can barely make out the 2+1 mistimesignal ending at 0115:19.5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6220.0-AM, WMDB Nashville TN, relayed by WNQM 1300, relayed by mixing spur with WWCR-4, 7520 minus 1300. Originally there was a power cut at 0045 UT, official August sunset in Nashville, corresponding to WNQM switch from 50 kW ND day to 5 kW direxional night. The signal after then would be detectable but much weaker.

I wasn`t listening before 0045 tonight, but surprised to be hearing it at ``high`` power level, 0105 UT Sat August 29, with ranchera music rating S6 vs storm crash peaks at S9. 0106 UT ``La Ranchera`` slogan of WMDB 880. 7520 WWCR is still on to produce the mixture, but I am not hearing much if any audio from it on 6220. 0132 still audible now at ~S7, and at 0144. So did WNQM stay on 50 kW after sunset??

This cannot last past 0158 when 7520 switches to 5890 UT Tue-Sat --- and one might reasonably expect to find the next SW-minus-MW mix on 5890 minus 1300 = 4590, but not sought lately. That will be on air all night; but 5890 doesn`t start until 0400 UT Sundays, 0300 UT Mondays. 7520 is not on air at all weekends, so no 6220 possible till UT Tuesday, but under these circumstances we should still hear it in September when WNQM supposedly cuts to night power and pattern at 0000 UT just as 7520 is starting (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1788 monitoring: confirmed Friday August 28 at 2330 on WRMI-12, 5850, good signal on their lowest frequency, not much subject to propagation disturbances, and on 315 degree antenna right across the middle of North America; can only improve into fall and winter, so I hope we can keep this time & frequency. Next:

** U S A. 7489.95-AM, UT Sat Aug 29 at 0145 tune-in to `Allan Weiner Worldwide` live on WBCQ, running way over, but why not? Good signal and // 5110.0-AM (DSB plus carrier) which is much weaker in noise; and 9330 is not on. He`s had a long phone call with Anthony(?) a young person laudably interested in radio; now starts going thru some pirate logs from the latest Free Radio Weekly, mentions that a lot of them are by Glenn Hauser.

This prompts Scott Becker to call in, suggesting they ``drag`` me to the next WinterFest, where I have ``never been``, ungluing me from my chair (tho I do go to the PO Box, they admit). Suggests putting a poll on the WBCQ website whether people would like to meet me, ``a friggin` institution`` at the next Fest. Scott also threatens to visit me from his place 50 miles away in Kansas. 0151 back to some more FRW pirate logs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Aug 29 at 0155, open carrier/dead air at 50 to 60 over S9 level from WTWW-2, with some hum as always. I assume Ted is about to play DJ prior to the 0400 `Midnight [sic] in the Desert` Art Bell broadcast, as I think he does most weeknights (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 12005, Aug 29 at 0113, VOV English relay to N America via UK remains nothing but a JBA carrier; summer is over, hastened by geomag storm not recovered from yet, and more to come in early September (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
