** ALGERIA [non]. 7295, Aug 21 at 0530, RTA via FRANCE has good signal, but unusually flutter and echo (back scatter? Long path?) due to propagation disturbance; WWV reports, ``The estimated planetary K-index at 0600 UTC on 21 August was 3. No space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** AUSTRALIA. 9580, 12065, etc., Aug 21 before 1400, R. Australia again with variety of world music, so `The Daily Planet` now seems to be regular during the 13-14 hour, at least on weekdays; and what will follow the 1400 news? No announcements, but 1405 right into hard rock and rapcrap, soon a tune-off. No more food for the mind in the form of one of the best talk/interview shows anywhere, `Late Night Live`, altho it presumably still exist somewhere on the RN schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 6000, Aug 21 at 0513 and later, this RHC English frequency is off; all the others on 5 and 6 MHz nominal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ECUADOR. 6050, Aug 21 at 1033, still no signal from HCJB, which if on would surely be propagating well, better than in evening; quaked off? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** EGYPT [and non]. 9965, Aug 20 at 2319 quick check, R. Cairo weak carrier, but on the air during scheduled English sesquihour. I`m busy recording WORLD OF RADIO, so another quick check not until 0156 UT Aug 21, when 11710 is on the air hetting Argentina on the hi side, and still doing so past 0203 instead of off by 0200. Bad news, as RAE is now in English.
12070 I tune in at 0157, just in time to hear what sounds like decent modulation for a change! In Spanish, but cutoff at 0157:15*. Maybe three days` downtime axually accomplished some repairs, but don`t bet on it.
The other two frequencies are also on with carriers detected on 9315, 9965. Next check at 0345 I still hear a clash on 11710/11711, Cairo still on? No, apparently TWR Africa via UAE but which per Aoki is at 0330-0345 only, daily except Saturdays.
Nothing heard on 13850 at 0513 check, but propagation is depressed, and Wolfgang Büschel was hearing it in Germany at 0515 (as well as the earlier frequencies this date). He and Ivo Ivanov have been checking out all the R. Cairo transmissions on Aug 20 and 21, finding many but not all of them missing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 540, Aug 21 at 0535, dominating is Mexican music from WSW, ID as frequently expected at 0537, ``La Ranchera de Paquimé``, i.e. XETX, Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, despite its 1 kW night, vs 150 kW ND listed XEWA San Luís Potosí, still surely way underpowered now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 580, Aug 21 at 1046, music and live DJ with 14:6 timecheck and at 1047, 13:6, temps in C&F so certainly on the border, and no doubt XEMU Piedras Negras, Coahuila, making 68/min SAH = 1.13 Hz with WIBW in KS, and close to collinear so I can`t null one or the other. WIBW is closer, stronger and beaming our way, but XEMU is non-direxional also with southern advantage. Slogan I took as ``La Ranchita`` but maybe really the listed ``Rancherita`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 700, Aug 21 at 1121, open carrier with hum, from SW/NE, which we`ve previously traced to XEGD, Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua. By 1130 probably same station now modulating with federal PSAs including one for the SEP, ads, program promo. Still some hum detectable but much less than with OC when the AVC boosts it up (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 710.0, Aug 21 at 1116, preacher we`ve heard before altho in good Spanish, has slight accent, or is it merely over-emphasized evangelistic? I think he`s the same one who sometimes preaches here in Low German. Closes at 1128 as ``La Biblia Dice``, but local rather than syndicated, with Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua address and phone; 1129 XEDP, La Ranchera de Cuauhtémoc jingle and into secular music main format. 5.5 hours earlier, this frequency had a big het on it, believed to be same XEDP, but with different or constantly jumpy transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 780, Aug 21 at 0542 UT, open carrier obviously groundwave from 250-watt daytimer KSPI Stillwater, more than occupying the null of WBBM at approx. right-angle, otherwise making fast SAH with it. Next check 1050 UT, still OC, atop country music, no doubt KCEG Fountain CO from the backside. By next2 check 1115 UT, KSPI now modulating with CBS Sports talk, tsk2 vs WBBM regular CBS. Later in the mornings (from 1205 UT?) KSPI normally does local talk, not entirely sportive (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1735 monitoring: confirmed first airing at 0331 UT Thursday August 21 on WRMI, 9955, fair signal; also second airing after 1230 UT Thu Aug 21 on WRMI, 9955, plus the CCCCI from France in Chinese via Taiwan, also making a SAH. Next:
UT Friday 0326v on WWRB, 3185
Friday 2130 on WRMI, 7570 & 15770 [may be previous edition]
Saturday 0630 & 1430 on Hamburger Lokalradio, 7265-CUSB
UT Sunday 0100 on WRMI, 5950 [was current edition last week]
UT Sunday 0131 on KVOH, 9975
UT Monday 0259v on Area 51 via WBCQ, 5110v-CUSB
Tuesday 1100 on WRMI, 9955
Wednesday 0630 & 1430 on Hamburger Lokalradio, 7265-CUSB
Wednesday 1315 on WRMI, 9955
Wednesday 2100 on WBCQ, 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 750, Aug 21 at 0541 UT, KAMA El Paso is *still* running 10 kW day power and/or non-direxional, totally dominating frequency instead of WSB Atlanta which it is obliged to protect. Spanish call-in talk format; still the case at next check 1049 UT, caller about a terremoto, making slow SAH with algo, WSB? 1124 UT with Univisión América ID (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 770, Aug 21 at 1125 UT, ``Newsradio 770, KKOB`` ID and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, good signal. At this early hour, Albuquerque should still be on night pattern with null toward WABC. As usual we are uncertain whether a bit of the 50 kW may be bleeding around the null not exactly toward us too; or the 230-watt ND filler in Santa Fe which operates only while the main rig is on DA.
Attn CPC test arrangers: as I suggested years ago, but it never happened, try to get KKOB to do a DX test by turning off the main transmitter, however briefly, while still modulating the Santa Fean, so tuners can be certain that`s what they are picking up (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 910, Aug 21 at 1113 UT, ``91-Country KCJB`` ID in passing, notice of school opening delay until 10 am somewhere around Minot ND, due to power outage caused by lightning (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 1060, Aug 21 at 1109 UT, large steady open carrier, WSW/ENE, so no doubt KIJN Farwell TX, perpetually cheating daytimer; at least not modulating now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 840, Aug 21 at 0544 UT, romantic music in Spanish with WHAS nulled, while DF of this signal is close to N/S from here. 0545 UT non-ID slogan as ``noticias, deportes, entretenimiento todo el día; 840 AM te escucha``, more romx. Format doesn`t fit for any of the listed Mexicans in the IRCA Log. DF fits for KVJY Pharr (RGV) TX, but which in the NRC AM Log of last year was NWS/TLK ``Informativa 840``; while Radio-locator.com now calls it Radio Luz, which implies religion. 1 kW at night, it has a null toward WHAS but some signal to the north. Altho DF seemed wrong, another possibility in WHAS null would be CMHW in Santa Clara, CUBA; would the slogan above fit it? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 840, Aug 21 at 1057 UT, another try at the unID Spanish I was hearing 5+ hours earlier, now says ``Fórmula, detrás de las noticias, Grupo Fórmula`` . . . ``1,500 AM``. 1058 UT into choral Mex NA, and I make the mistake of tuning away, for at 1100 UT it`s already over and into news. Trouble is, I can`t find any Fórmula stations listed on 840, in Cantú or IRCA; and the Fórmula website is totally unhelpful, no station lists found.
1500, however, surely refers to their ``segunda cadena`` flagship XEDF in the DF (replacing what was one of our favorites relayed on SW sesquidecades ago, XERH/XEHR ``desde la muy noble y real Ciudad de México`` on 11880). That doesn`t necessarily mean this 840 station is on the Fórmula-2 net; it could have been just cross-promotion on the -1 net originating with 970 XERFR. Presumably not the same as the other 840 unID in Spanish. Fórmula has this annoying habit of constantly referring to and IDing for the flagship frequency in Mexico City, meaningless and confusing on the numerous affiliates (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
