Glenn Hauser logs March 18-19, 2013

** AUSTRALIA. 21740, March 18 at 2316, R. Australia is back with good signal, some fading, rather than very good, so not completely recovered from yesterday`s geomag storm. Slightly worse on // 19000 but both sufficient. K index at 21 UT was 2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. Correxion: this log typoed 4924.86 instead of correct: 4824.86 approx., March 16 at 0047, weak music vs CODAR, Portuguese; 0102 sounds like a hymn. Still not sure which of the two ZYs this be.

Meanwhile a close log has come in from Thomas Nilsson, Sweden, SW Bulletin: ``4824.95, Mar 14 0158, R Educadora de Bragança heard with a clear ID at 0158z. Decent signal. TN`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 15189.90, March 18 at 2321, Brazilian very poor with flutter, so R. Inconfidência is on the low side of 15190 for a change (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11685-11965 or so, March 18 at 2330, big buzz tearing up the 25m band is back from the 11840 RHC transmitter which itself is undermodulated, and also accompanied by even lower // Spanish modulation spurs on 11840 and 11850 --- and below those I could hear crosstalk from RHC in English // 11880! The buzz is loudest just below 11840 and above 11850 in clear spots (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 15480, Monday March 18 at 2248, JBA carrier from presumed R. Cairo in Spanish. I had just received notice from Dino Bloise that R. Cairo is now carrying his `Frecuencia al Día` DX program Mondays at 2240 on 15480. Full half hour? Surely if it had been propagating, it would have had barely audible or distorted modulation. And not on any other Spanish transmission? I know that English programs of R. Cairo, when they sent out schedules, were not the same on different transmissions even of the same sesquihour length (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUIANA FRENCH. 9490, before and after 0100 UT March 19, NHK in Japanese, instead of Radio República in Spanish, a little mixup at MSY? About equal to the jamming level. Last night it was hardly audible vs jamming, presumably because of geomag storm affecting even such a southerly path? Normally it`s above the jamming until later in the bihour fading down (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, March 19 at 0059.5*, CubaRM from 5990 CRI relay goes off, but band still so noisy that I can only resort to BFO to time the cutoff of R. Chaski carrier from 5980: 0101:07.5* which is 4.5 seconds later than last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9930 & 5085, Monday March 18 at 2324 check, both WTWW-2 frequencies are off, altho they were on Saturday and Sunday + UT Monday. I checked too late to tell whether red-ink guy Don Harris` promise to be back ``tomorrow`` was fulfilled before 2300 but doubt it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1490, March 19 at 0132 UT, dutifully trying for the WVBG Vicksburg MS DX test, where the only advantage is the Morse code and anything else that might cut thru the QRM, since as a graveyarder it is on the same power and tower 24 hours. One earphone from the DX-398, the other from the FRG-7 with E-W longwire, producing ``stereo`` QRM effect. Probably better results on the latter.

Right away I can almost imagine I am hearing in the pileup some hi-pitched code, but too slow to recognize as Morse; just as likely could be bits of music highs from who knows what. Also maybe at 0144; gave up at 0147. Meanwhile, thinking of what I would need to recognize as the ID, I realize that in Morse, WVBG is a palindrome! So this was not a pointless exercise (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9425.48 approx., March 18 at 2327, the open carrier I was hearing hours ago is still here, with some fading so not local, and again with a very lite het, perhaps India on 9425.0 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15000-USB, March 18 at 2319 I was checking WWVH for the offset correxion on the porch DX-398 for later frequency measurements, when I was startled to hear override by YL military traffic controller, calling Echo Charlie, could not understand her own ID or location, but said ``on 5 and 8 Megs`` (not exactly!), and also mentioned ``Air Station Elizabeth City`` before wishing a good evening, and out. I could not hear other side of contact, but she could, so they must have known she was on 15000, or as implied, on duplicate channel(s). Recheck at 2322 there was some ``running water`` ute noise atop WWVH.

What in the world are they doing on this standard frequency? Finger slipped on the frequency-puncher, and/or causing it to default to an even MHz? Elizabeth City is in northeast North Carolina, and that is a Coast Guard facility:
