Glenn Hauser logs March 17, 2013

** ASCENSION. 7305, March 17 at 0527, the BaBcoCk music loop is playing and again with skips like I heard March 16 at 2100-2101:50* on 15480, AWR via SOUTH AFRICA. Therefore, I conclude the defective loop is being sent out that way from London master control without anyone caring or noticing. On 7305 this precedes BBC Hausa which opens at 0529 mentioning Quick check of 6175, end of Vietnam relay, but at 0528 it`s already shifted to WHRI promotional PS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 860, March 17 at 0613 UT, French Canadian accented talk from the northeast, i.e. CJBC Toronto. Always nice to hear this overriding nearby KKOW KS. 740 also had some music mixing with talk, presumably CFZM/KRMG (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake March 17 before 1400:
11500, good at 1331 with flutter
13920, fair at 1341 with flutter; none in the 12s, 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s

CNR1 mostly jammers with a major violin concerto in Sunday-night classical music show, March 17 at 1323: best on 9810, also // 9825, 9780, 9705, 9530, 9500, 9390 – and that`s just the 31m band. 12045 also with same // 9810 at 1333-1334.

15375, March 17 at 1345, ``Triumphal March from Aïda``, so first thought is another secret test by IRRS, but doesn`t stop after the march, continues with choral portion; poor with flutter and worsening, talk starts at 1348.6, seems Chinese, but way out of synch with 9810. Probably the CNR1 show too, jamming R. Free Asia, Tibetan via Tajikistan (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11910, March 17 at 1356-1357:05*, REE IS, tail of 2-hour Spain relay via Beijing, which is appropriate, so this spurs me to check the 7 MHz channels which pick up the REE IS inappropriately prior to the CRI Nepali service via Kunming: at *1358 JBA on 7435, and even less audible but detectable on 7220 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11880, March 17 at 0302, RHC Spanish is *still* on this frequency 3+ hours after it had been closing as explained in last report, and also on 11840 which by now is JBA/JBM. What will happen on 11880 today?

13780, March 17 at 1403, RHC is AWOL here; had been on before 1400 including `En Contacto` at 1335 which had one birthday greeting, then an interview by Manolo with a Cuban who had returned from Nebraska where he listened to 11760; then Pedro Sedano`s monthly media report, including R. Moldova Internacional QRT even as a webcaster (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420 // weaker 7475 and weakest 11645, March 17 at 0515, ERT with Greek Orthodox singing, more harmonious than usual, and never a female voice as those must be banned. Is this from Mount Athos, or what? It`s beyond me how any religion which puts down women can still have any women members. Brainwashing? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 11740, March 17 at 0508 and 0523 chex, NO signal from NHK English to North America via GUIANA FRENCH! Hope they haven`t decided to kill it early a biweek before they have to. But audible well on 9770, which is 500 kW, 155 degrees from FRANCE intended for Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 15575, March 17 circa 1353, KBSWR music, presumably K-pop in English hour on Sunday; 1404 in Korean, good with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 570, March 17 at 0546 UT, ``Notiradio quinientos setenta``, ``más informes, más música`` and indeed followed by music rather than information; also mentioned México, and next break repeated the slogan which is not in any of the references: Cantú, IRCA Log or WRTH. So which XE is it?

Per huge accessible Facebook page, it`s XEBJB Monterrey NL:
including lots of photos including this one of Heidi Klum:
among other celebrities, plus some cabina shots.

The listings show XEBJB as merely ``Radio 570``, 5/0.5 kW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 620, March 17 at 0552 UT, official PSAs for Cámera de Senadores and then Cámera de Diputados about what great work the pols are doing in vague generalities, then ``La Norteñita, Chihuahua`` jingle, i.e. XEBU, Chihuahua city (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, March 17 at 0554 UT, Spanish pastor closing with address in NL, full legal ID for ABC Radio, 660, XEFZ, 10,000 watts, street address in Monterrey, 0555 choral NA. Monterrey is far enough from the border not to be influenced by early start of DST in El Norte (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1480, March 17 at 0600 UT, reconfirming that the KBXD DX test in not happening, instead I get something in Spanish, ID sounds like ``La Fogata Norteña``, into choral NA. It must have been short version as retuned at 0602 I had already missed a more specific ID. No such slogan listed anywhere for a Mexican 1480 station; searching on it leads only to a restaurant in México DF! Fogata means bonfire:

Of the 1480s listed, most likely one of: Monterrey, Monclova, Delicias. But is it really a new station slogan or another restaurant? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PALAU. 10000, March 17 at 1320, Chinese music over WWV/H!! Soon found // 9965 R. Australia relay, and same also on 9930, the other T8WH frequency, so the 9930 and 9965 transmitters are interacting producing this horrible leapfrog. 9930 is supposed to be carrying various WHR gospel programming in English. Audio source confirmed as RA, since it`s // 9475 Shep which is several seconds ahead of the others. 1327 Chinese announcement. At 1329 found another weaker spur 35 kHz higher on 10035. This requires immediate attention! Not sure who`s in charge of spurs at South Bend or Koror, but I`ve notified Nigel Holmes at RA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 7320, March 17 at 0621, undermodulated YL in Russian, i.e. R. Rossii, which as Ron Howard reminds me, is not via Pet/Kam as in my recent report, but via Magadan [not ``Okhotsk`` as in HFCC disinfo] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TUNISIA. 7275 from IWT still absent, March 17 at 0513, 0523, 0622, and 7335 also missing at the latter time after it should have started just before 0600. Occasionally before, IWT has put its evening frequencies on by mistake in the morning, but nothing from it either now on 7225 or 7345. Wolfgang Büschel in Germany agrees the 7 MHz are missing in the mornings, but he and others still hear it later in the day on 17735, 7345, 7225, but not 12005, which Ivo Ivanov says has been off the air since August altho still in the schedule references. BTW, in absence of IWT on 7275, I am not hearing anything from Nigeria, which was always weak and very undermodulated (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 13570, March 17 at 1342, very poor and undermodulated talk, can it be WINB? On Sundays only, it is supposed to be on this early, and a bit better after 1400. Carrier does not seem to be wobbling. Must be, as VOA doesn`t collide until 1500. This morning, all US signals above 11 MHz are abnormally weak, e.g. 12105 WTWW Russian too.

Checking HFCC, I see that the WINB azimuth on 13570 is 242 degrees, almost the same as WBCQ`s 245 which unavoidably crosses the USA on the way to Nuevo Laredo. 13570 CIRAF targets, however, are 10, 11, 27, 28, 37, 46 = Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, W & C Europe, W Africa. While on 9265 it`s just CIRAF 10 & 11 in the western hemisphere (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1030, March 17 at 0612 UT, ``10-30, The Light, and``, into ``Amen`` hymn, i.e. 5/0.5 kW Blue Springs MO. When hearing religion on 1030 now in the nightmiddle, must be careful not to suspect 50 kW daytimer KCTA cheating (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1350, March 17 at 1311 UT, religious event announcements from Iowa, mentioning KRNT, gospel song. Hope this is just a Sunday-morning aberration and KRNT Des Moines hasn`t abandoned its talk/nostalgia format (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1480, March 17 at 0501 UT, much publicized 50 kW day-pattern DX test from KBXD Dallas, supposed to be tones, etc., on the hour and half-hour between 05 and 07 UT, but all I can hear for a moment in the heavy QRM is Brother Scare, who has been on KBXD for quite some time, presumably his only 1480 station.

I don`t `need` KBXD since I have been hearing it since its first on-air tests after reconstruxion months ago. But also checked 0530-0532, again nothing like a DX test, and at 0532 the hoarsevoice of BS audible. Again at 0559 a bit of BS dominant for a moment, then gone.

This did lead me to another intriguing log of an unID from MEXICO, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN. 7315, March 17 at 0532 open carrier with some hum, when SMG is supposed to be broadcasting R. Dabanga to Sudan; by 0542 the carrier has been turned off. This transmission is supposed to run 0400-0600, the first semihour being R. Tamazuj. What happened? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
