Glenn Hauser logs February 26-27, 2015

** BRAZIL. 11745 & 11815, Feb 27 at 0206, crackle spurs from 11780.1 RNA/RNB. 11760 RHC is also splattering, so I make sure the garbage around 11745 modulation spikes are matching 11780.1 on another receiver, not 11760 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. Not having paid much attn to R. Cairo lately, I do so now:

9860, UT Fri Feb 27 at 0201, good signal, undermodulated but sufficient with ME music as the English sesquihour is underway. Not distorted – that is, until the YL announcer comes on at 0202; bad studio mike and ambience are part of the problem. Bits of music; 0203 program summary but hard to follow; 0204 over to OM, ``Radio Cairo presents --- this is Islam``, a weekly show. It`s slightly more readable but the accent is a problem. I try to get something out of it but cannot. Now, when are they going to expound on ``this is Coptic``? Then timesignal ends at 0214:36.5 --- who would want to set his chronometer at that odd hour? News theme tape wows or snags, as did the one introducing the Islam show. Now the YL newscaster modulation is too high, causing some distortion. Their studio equipment must be very old and worn out; transmitters too. And so it goes.

9905, Feb 27 at 0205, R. Cairo, good signal in Arabic, suppressed and distorted modulation

9965, Feb 27 at 0205, R. Cairo, good signal in other Arabic, this one JBM with whine; no 12s audible now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 9445, Feb 27 at 0218.5 just as I am tuning across a weak station, it cuts off the air in mid-word. It was Voz de la República Islámica de Irán, depriving Spanish listeners of the last sesquiminute of their broadcast, 500 kW, 304 degrees from Kamalabad to Mexico and Caribbean (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Feb 27 at 0146 UT, and several other times lately, as I am rotating the DX-398 on my easel checking for DX in stronger station nulls, I keep finding KZLS nulling and thus peaking in a wrong direxion. It`s supposed to be about the same as OKC stations to the SSE altho less than half as far, east of Hennessey, but I keep getting a null considerably clockwise from there, i.e. further west if it`s still to the south of here. I recheck several OKC and other ground- and skywave stations and they appear to null at the proper spots. Maybe something around here is skewing my readings, but only in the X-band? Or KZLS has secretly moved transmitter site, or maybe has a backup site? Unlikely; no such info at or FCC AM Query. Will have to check further, DF from other locations (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Feb 27 at 0114:47.5, music prélude starts, 0115:11.5 mistimesignal ends from SLBC, very poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9395, Thu Feb 26 at 2156, Global 24 via WRMI, `Dialogos Greece` says it is about to finish, with a final musical selexion. So this week not running over an hour; 2200 no ID but change to waltz theme and opening European News Network, no evergreen but a new one leading with this week`s suicide bombing in Kano (did he say Europe??). G24 program grid continues to allege that WORLD OF RADIO is aired at this time, as indeed it was until Feb (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7490-v, Feb 27 at 0159, WBCQ with talk show going into a break, throws in some Hebrew expressions, phone 845-345-1010, but just as I anticipated, he`s cut off for canned ID in time to join Brother Hystairical in progress at 0200, who takes priority over everything. Yes, it was Rabbi Yaakov Spivak, as now sked UT Tue thru Fri at 01-02. I wonder what his show is about (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7505.35 approx., Feb 27 at 0157, WRNO is on before nominal *0200, as a program from is concluding. VG signal and VG modulation too! Now if they can only keep that up, and we`ll try to overlook being so far off-frequency. After 0214 when I am measuring the frequency, YL DJ claims twice to be on ``7.505``. Hey, wouldn`t it be neat if once, just once, some off-frequency SW station announced its real exact frequency?! DHYB; ignorance is bliss (and deniable). (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1220, Feb 27 at 0152 UT, ``You`re never more than 20 minutes away from the weather on My Country, WSLM 12-20 AM``. And you`re never less than 5000 watts day power either, rather than 82 watts night, per NRC AM Log, which also shows slogan instead as ``Classic Country``. Maybe they utter both (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1630, Feb 27 at 0141 UT, Spanish is making it instead of usual English from KKGM and KCJJ, and it loops NW/SE, so KRND in Fox Farm WY; adstring including a Dodge dealer in AC 970 (which is adjacent Colorado); amid heavy CCI, SHVA promos some norteño event the next day, viernes 28; 0144 website UNC - algo .org, probably referring to University of Northern Colorado; 0145 Top Dollar(?) store in Cheyenne. 0145 ``La Jota Mexicana, 16-30 AM, 94.7 FM``. Where does the Jota name come from? Allusion to a dance originating in Spain? Has retained original call KRND presumably invoking old slogan ``Grande``. IIRC this station used to have an odd reduced power, but NRC AM Log 2014-2015 now shows it`s 10/1 kW U1 like most X-banders and the other three on 1630.

Owner started other Spanish stations in Colorado. History page is interesting but still doesn`t explain where the J comes from. Maybe it`s obvious to anyone of La Raza; or maybe it`s just random branding which sounds neat. It certainly beats Zeta with its unsavory connotations. Well, at least there is a J in its translator call, K223CJ, tho that was surely a sequential assignment. But wait, channel 223 is 92.5, not 94.7. Website confirms 94.7 is it now. The WTFDA FM Database shows the 94.7 in Cheyenne is K234AH relaying KRAE [1480] with Oldies, ``Greatest Hits of the 50s and 60s`` and still shows 92.5 K223CJ as the KRND 1630 duplicator with 50 watts. So both references need this updated. How much longer before KRND starts bestowing top billing on its FM translator, a widespread industry trend? It`s already physically on the upper side of the homepage logo (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
