Glenn Hauser logs February 19-20, 2015

** AUSTRALIA. 11590, Feb 20 at 1332, good signal from RBA playing Garfunkel`s ``Bridge Over Troubled Waters``, which is really about friendship, but no doubt projected by gospel huxters into something religious, imaginary friends. 1334 into Hindi talk mixed seamlessly with heavily Hindi-accented English about children`s welfare (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 4765, Feb 20 at 0341, R. Progreso good signal and modulation level but distorted (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ECUADOR. 6050, Feb 20 at 0337, slow English talking about Ravi Shankar, some modulation distortion. So HCJB is still running the `Spotlight` quarter-hour in specialish English amongst all the Spanish and Kichwa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EQUATORIAL GUINEA [non]. 15190, Feb 19 at 2228, R. Africa Network via WRMI is supposedly religious, but filling some airtime with public-domain secular stuff: `(X-1)` oldtime radio show, outro dramatization of ``Nightfall`` by Isaac Asimov! who of course was an Atheist --- way to go!! NBC chimes and 2232 into gospel music, whew. I`ve never found anything like a program schedule via
http://www.radiopanam.com and still don`t (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ETHIOPIA [non]. Starting February 20, 2015, a new radio station will start broadcasting on shortwave, Risala International.

Risala International will broadcast on Fridays from 1830-1900 UTC on 15165 kHz in the 19 meter band.

For more information, visit Risala International | Just another WordPress site
(BRB via gh, DXLD)

They are having an Islamic conference of some sort in Minneapolis on Feb 20-21. Main language on the homepage in Roman letters looks Somali, and Google translate agrees, but fails to translate except for a few words here and there! Could be the spelling is non-standard? Header also in another language, Amharic? Their videos of demonstrations in Minnesota are labeled Oromo. So the homepage text is probably in Oromo, which is why Google can`t translate it, not one of their languages, but related to Somali. Google translates Risala (or Risalah) from Arabic as ``Message``.

Site? Nothing at all in B-14 HFCC on 15165, nor in Aoki.

A station of this name existed log ago, possibly unrelated:

``In 1994, Islamic station Radio Al-Risalah commenced from Moscow, hiring airtime from Radio Moscow and the Bolshakovo, Kaliningrad station``

That was from a long article:
independent-sw-stations-1991-96/>
via RUSdx Aug 31, 2014 also via BC-DX

I posted the above to the DXLD yg at 1608 UT Feb 20, plus follow-ups. Then I monitor it myself:

15165, Feb 20 at *1828:50 carrier on, very poor, still open past 1830 until Horn-of-Africa music starts at 1830:13, later some talk audible, but far too weak to follow any further; confirmed at least that it has really started up. Weak signals at poor level are better: 15140 Oman, 15190 Philippines (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, Feb 20 at 0343, R. Truth, banjo variations on favorite theme ``Workin` on the Railroad``, segué some other song, rough modulation somewhat distorted. Feb 25 will be exactly one sesquidecade after R. Verdad`s first transmission (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUYANA. 3290, Feb 20 at 0644, zero signal, not even a carrier when we can normally detect V of Guyana with BBCWS relay; so off again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9380, Feb 20 at 1355, AIR National Channel is managing to modulate today! Fair with S Asian song (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KUWAIT. 21540, Feb 20 at 1412, no signal from R. Kuwait, tho 21505 Sa`udi is propagating. Not on 21580 either (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, Feb 19 circa 2130 UT, still open carrier/dead air from KEOR Catoosa/Sperry/Tulsa, for the 32nd day as audible on caradio by quietening of channel compared to noisier 1110; and also can hear KLEY 1130 modulation abutting the -10 carrier. But wait! It`s no longer KEOR. In NRC DX News Feb 23, David Yocis includes in his AM Switch column:

``1120 KEOR OK Catoosa – Call change to KETU (changed in database Feb. 2015 where it says the effective date was Nov. 21, 2012)``

How were we supposed to know, when it`s been broadcasting for a month at least, since January 19 without any modulation, not even IDs? (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOMALILAND. 7120-, Feb 20 at 0327, open carrier with fair signal from R. Hargeisa, slightly on the lo side and not much QRhaM. 0331 music starts but just barely modulated; then turned up a little, military band presumably NA, but too late, cut to announcement at 0331.5, still undermodulated; 0333 Qur`an recognizable (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH AFRICA. 7285, Feb 20 at 0429, Sonder Grense with good signal in Afrikaans, apparent adstring, mentions ``50 Shades of Gray`` in English. Altho on until 07, it`s normally faded down or out before 06. There are now zero SW broadcasts in Holländisch per
but that doesn`t include pirates or The Mighty KBC which mixes in some Dutch commercials with English programming. So for widely disseminated broadcasts, the legacy colonial language Afrikaans will have to do from SAUK. I wonder if dentro-Netherlanders have any trouble understanding it. (Then there`s Frisian expected from the annual Öömrang broadcast, Sat Feb 21 at 16-17 on 15215 via Nauen.) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN. 7205, Feb 20 at 0332, very poor signal with QRM, presumably R. Omdurman ex-7200 as reported by Don Hosmer, MI, MARE, on Feb 12. I had heard it much better when on 7200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SWAZILAND. 4775, Feb 20 at 0340, TWR music-box IS stands out against the CODAR, even tho at poor signal level; 0342 into talk in presumed Lomwe as scheduled daily for 16 more minutes, 50 kW at 3 degrees azimuth. (BTW I`m hearing nothing from Djibouti on 4780 --- is it really active?)(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 9390, Feb 20 at 1358, fair signal better than adjacent 9395 Global 24, choral music, probably the national anthem:
but 1359 cut off for antenna change of HSK9, R. Thailand. Back on by 1400, with more flutter, for English news right away, no bells or formal sign-on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9800, Feb 20 at 1345, VOA Korean via PHILIPPINES, always good signal here far beyond target, and less hum than usual, during English lesson. Fun to note the sources they choose, such as today, going thru the song `Sunglasses at Night`` (by Corey Hart) explaining the idioms one by one, such as ``Don`t switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no``. Hmmm, doesn`t Kim Jung-Un wear shades? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1761 monitoring: still no show at 2201 Thursday Feb 19 on Global 24 [see separate log]; and I missed checking the 0001 UT Friday on 9395, but probably; did anyone hear it? Next:
Fri 2130 on WRMI 7570 & 15770
Sat 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
Sat 1000 on WRMI 5850
Sun 0231 on KVOH 9975
Sun 2300 on WRMI 11580
Mon 0400v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v
Mon 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Tue 1200 on WRMI 9955
Wed 0401 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Wed 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB

Wed 2200 on WBCQ 7490v
Wed 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9955, Feb 19 at 2209-2215+, WRMI is playing continuous variety of music, no announcements, presumably filler, tho an unfamiliar selexion. After daytime break, from *2200 block is supposedly Brother Scare. At 2234 something new in very slowly spoken Kriyol, now with lite pulse jamming. WRMI program schedule still dated January 1 now has carved out 2230-2300 Thursdays merely as ``Kreyol``. I`ve asked Jeff White what program it really is, exactly? Another mystery now on the schedule: ``Kloch desperans`` Sunday at 1145-1200: what is that and in what language? Turns out these are related:

Searching on that title, I find this already mentioned on WRMI FB January 8: ``WRMI Begins Weekly Creole Service --- As of January 8, 2015, WRMI will begin airing a 30-minute weekly segment of programming in the Creole language to Haiti at 5:30-6:00 pm Eastern Time on 9955 kHz shortwave. From 5:30-5:45 pm Thursdays, WRMI will air a program called "Kloch Desperans" ("Bells of Hope") presented by Father Andre Weedny. From 5:45-6:00 pm, the station will air a dramatized version of the Bible in Creole`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also EQUATORIAL GUINEA [non], and separate logs of Global 24

** U S A. 9395 via WRMI, Global 24 monitoring: after World of Radio disappeared from the previous Thu 2201 UT airing as `Dialogos Greece` kept running the last few weeks, this time Feb 19 I am checking at 2100 to confirm whether D.G. really starts at 2100, or later? Yes, it does. Recheck at 2200 Feb 19, Greek music is still playing when G24 cuts away from it this week, no ID or ad, right into European News Network with another replay of the evergreen show interviewing Dame Vera Lynn instead of any news. And at 2215: REPEAT the very same show again! So instead of a brand-new WOR we got two plays of a backup show. Previous weeks, D.G. ran until 2215 and then E.N.N.

More crashes to the same old fill music on 9395: Feb 20 at 0327, 1812 Overture is playing; recheck 0349 it`s about to climax with bells and cannons, when cut off for a Hobo Hanky ad (new one to me), then back to Bach. Propagation disturbance plunges the MUF, so by 0427, 9395 is nothing but a JBA carrier (while WRMI 7570 & 7455 are still very strong but somewhat diminished). Still JBA at 0646.

BTW, just before 2100 UT Feb 19 on 9395, there was a WRN promo for `Democracy Now`. I was not aware it`s on WRN, and indeed not found anywhere on the WRN North American schedule dated January 1. Also, I had assumed Vatican Radio was on WRN at 0545 UT, since we hear it on G24 following Israel Radio at 0530, which is on WRN --- but WRN shows their 0545 program is RNZI; needs updating? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5110, UT Fri Feb 20 at 0432, WBCQ off, so VORW ex-pirate
is apparently a past-thing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12105, Feb 19 at 2233, WTWW-3 is off instead of Bibling; this transmission had been fairly reliable. WTWW-2 is also off, of course, no 9930 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1140, Feb 20 at 0652 UT, Coast to Coast, // KFAQ 1170 and countless others, but never synchronized; loops ENE/WSW and holding its own against XEMR. Suspect WRVA Richmond VA, and confirmed as such by several IDs at 0659 UT, ``Newsradio 1140, WRVA`` also with FM and HD frequencies, Fox `news`. 50 kW WRVA night pattern is NW/SE, so not much toward us (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1220, Feb 20 at 0655 UT, gospel music from the ENE/WSW, and C&W music from NNW/SSE, the latter soon replaced by caller speaking accented English, mentions DFW international airport, show host also with S Asian accent, so surely KZEE Weatherford TX, 200 watts at night, ``South Asian Radio`` a.k.a. ``Hot Pepper 1220`` per NRC AM Log. The other station would normally be perpetual cheater WSLM Salem IN, which is Classic Country, rather than gospel, so maybe this was really KOMC Branson MO, 1000/44 watts, ``Solid gospel`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9355, Feb 20 at 1403, open carrier with hum, 1405 tone and off. Likely VOA Tinang tuning up for the 1430 Burmese broadcast (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1845 UT February 20
