Glenn Hauser logs February 23-24, 2015

** BRAZIL. 11814 & 11746 approx., Feb 24 at 0103, weakly audible cracking spurs at modulation spike peaks from 11780.1v, RNA/RNB, while the very strong fundamental is splashing out to 12 kHz either side (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 12055, Feb 24 at 0100, heard one(?) pip considerably past 0100:00, very poor with flutter, talk. Aoki shows the CNR17 service in Kazakh is here at 2355-1200, 100 kW, 298 degrees from Lingshi 725 site since January 1. Before 0100 it would have had competition from FEBA  per Aoki, FEBC per WRTH, in Wa via Bocaue, Philippines (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, Feb 24 at 0117, poor-fair signal from R. Truth, sermon in English being translated into Spanish, phrase by phrase, something about the end of the world. Really? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 710, Feb 24 at 0147, IFE PSA from NE/SW, then mentions Cuauhtémoc (could be an historical or street reference, major figure in México), but it`s really XEDP, La Ranchera de Cuauhtémoc, in the Chihuahua city named for him, with singing ID jingle at 0147, which they frequently play. No het and little QRM in auroral conditions (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1110, Feb 24 at 0136, ID sounds like R. Metropolitana, 11-10 in promo, with SFX. I was expecting 100/50 kW XERED in the DF, but this is further southwest, and fits really for R. Guadalupana, XEWR, Ciudad Juárez, which IRCA lists as a 500-watt, 24-hour daytimer (i.e. blank for night power). But WRTH says 1000/500 watts. 0137 IFE PSA (sounded like, outdated one instead of INE?), 0138 regreso a su programa, `Levántate con ---``, YL-hostessed talk on the tema, ``la mentira``. A wakeup show? Then it`s an evening playback.

Conditions are auroral, and KFAB 1110 Omaha in the opposite direxion is absolutely no problem, not needing avoidance by nulling. Other northerlish clears are blacked out, including WLW 700, WGN 720, WBBM 780, WCCO 830, WHAS 840, KOA 850, WLS 890, KMOX 1120, WLAC 1510, WCKY 1530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1220, Feb 24 at 0134, Spanish news and it`s about one word ahead of XERF 1570, so sibling station, or rather parent station XEB in the DF with `Antena Radio` from IMER; despite its 100 kW clear-channel (ha, ha) status, not always audible at all (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1320, Feb 24 at 0132, Spanish news by YL anchorette, with quick sounder between items, looping SSW/NNE. She brings up a reporter on phone. Presumably XECPN, Piedras Negras, Coahuila again, with news format, La Poderosa with 10000/100 watts. Recheck at 0148, cáncer PSA, group ID ``Radiorama, la cadena que une a México``, and that chex for XECPN too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1470, Feb 24 at 0128, Spanish norteña song, slightly clockwise from N/S, 0130.5 SHVA with XEHI ID, 7-30 timecheck. XEHI is in Ciudad Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, across from Roma TX. Cantú shows 10000/250 watts, slogan La Caponera. IRCA says 3000/250 watts, La Consentida. WRTH splits the difference with 10000/250 watts, La Consentida.

What does Caponera mean? My Random House Latin American Spanish dixionary says: ``coop for fattening capons``; informally, ``gaol``; or ``place where one lives well free of charge``. But root word capón also means castrated or gelded, as for roosters. A great name for a radio station, eh? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1510, Feb 24 at 0127, Spanish talk from N/S is dominant, presumed XEQI in Monterrey NL; no WLAC needing to be nulled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 11580-, Feb 24 at 0106, the WRMI Brother Scare service again has that strange QRM I previously reported Feb 22 at 1432, a much different daypart: repeated descending tone. Now they are very regular every 3.5 seconds and lasting 3 seconds each before a pause. With BFO I discover that they apply to the lower sideband only, inaudible on the upper. I.e. another carrier repeatedly approaching 11580.0 from below causing descending het. When I tune to 11578 on USB, I hear the tones going upward. Nothing like this heard on other WRMI BS frequencies. I really don`t think it is local; at least nothing like it noted elsewhere on the SW bands here.

7730, Feb 24 at 0112, Brother Scare is again playing clip of an extremely critical caller really putting him down, as ``a crazy old religious zealot, who tells you lies``, and much more. I`ve run across this before several times. Then BS can come on and play the martyr, accuse the caller of being blasphemous, etc., etc. // much stronger 7570, both via WRMI.

Further tuning finds BS on two WWRB transmitters at once, 5050 and 3185, at 0118 Feb 24, those running about one sesquisecond behind WRMIs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Feb 24 at 0114:37, musical prélude starts, mistimesignal ends at 0115:19, and SLBC sign-on. Good level but heavy flutter as usual. Once again the TS had only three pips (2+1) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1761 monitoring: inquiry from a listener indicates that at 2200+ UT Monday Feb 23, Global 24 via WRMI 9395 was playing a Two Bobs episode on `Switzerland in Sound`, supposed to be at 2230 after WOR, which apparently did not air. Did anyone else hear WOR at 2200 or 2230? Next?
Tue 1200 on WRMI 9955
Wed 0401 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
Wed 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
Wed 1415 on WRMI 9955
Wed 2200 on WBCQ 7490v
Wed 2201 on Global 24 via WRMI 9395
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 980, Feb 24 at 0140 UT, Spanish talk explaining eligibility for Medicare, so it`s certainly United Statesian, from N/S, and in next 4 minutes clearly giving phone number 5 times: 832-701-3647. AC 832 = Houston TX, so this is KQUE, COL Rosenberg-Richmond, but address in Pasadena. NRC AM Log says it`s Radio Aleluya, 5/4 kW U4. Day and night patterns have major lobe SE into the Gulf, minor lobe NW toward me.

At same time I am getting another weaker SS on 980, somewhat separable further to the SW, likely XENR Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, 0141 UT with local weather (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1530, Feb 24 at 0125 UT, `Univisión Radio` ID in passing, and SHVA ads, 0126 UT Autozone, etc. from N/S, i.e. surely KGBT Harlingen, RGV TX. Standard remark about how KGBT is not supposed to put out any signal toward the north, but this was dominating anything else on 1530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
