Glenn Hauser logs April 10-11, 2014

** ALBANIA. 9845, April 11 at 0126 tune in to R. Tirana IS, but cuts off the air, and then repeated carriers on-and-off mostly without the IS, until finally by 0129 comes on and stays on for the 0130 English opening. Couldn`t hang around to confirm if it remained on for the rest of the broadcast. The 23-24 Albanian service on 9850 was again noticeably weaker on April 10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL [and non]. 6148-6170, April 10 at 2327, as I notice RHC [see CUBA] on 6165 now for the `Mesa Redonda` breakaway, there is also heavy interference from some extremely out-of-whack signal making rapid pulses across this range, and strong enough to QRM Cuba on 6165 itself. Could it be RHC`s own transmitter doing this? A ute, a radar?

No, recheck at 0053 April 11 as RHC is off again, and now I can hear bits of speech modulation in the pulses. RNB/RNA is still missing from 6180, so could this be what`s become of it? Yes! The modulation peaks match what I hear on their other frequency, 11780. Cuba apparently put 6165 on because of the other RNB making a big het with otherwise OK modulation from 5999.6 onto RHC 6000.0, and now Brazil is gettin` `em on the new frequency too, ha2. The heavy pulsing QRM continues at 0105 as RHC is now in English back on 6165, and still with the heavy het on 6000 too, the only other English frequency until The Cuban Five overkill at 0500. Recheck at 0252, no change, still pulsing and hetting both. RNB`s 250 kW transmitters periodically go out of whack and it takes a while to get them back in whack. Doesn`t anyone around Rodeador Park turn on a radio and listen to their own output? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also EAST TURKISTAN; MEXICO

** CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC [non]. 17500, April 10 at 1723, something with poor signal, presumably R. Ndeke Luka (lucky bird), the Hirondelle station in Bangui broadcasting back to the CAR, now via Woofferton UK as in A-14 HFCC instead of UAE as in B-13. WOF can come in a lot better here than Dhabbaya, but not yet, only a little better (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 9805, April 10 at 2351, Firedrake, yay, seldom heard any more, fair signal atop victim, which per Aoki is: RFA in Tibetan via UAE this hour only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6165, April 10 at 2327, RHC is on this frequency at unscheduled time --- it`s the `Mesa Redonda` TV simulcast, // 6000, which has that nasty Brazilian het on it, so apparently the reason for adding 6165. This hour is separate from other RHC Spanish not // on 11670, 15230, and an echo apart on 6070. But BRAZIL, q.v., gets RHC on 6165 too!!

15370, April 10 at 2331, RHC Portuguese with modulation somewhat suppressed and distorted, but good signal level (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 6180, April 11 at 0106, poor signal sounds like CRI English, and so it is, scheduled from Kashgar southwards, audiblized by the absence of BRAZIL, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420 > 7475 > 15630, April 11 at 0112, the triad of HR frequencies in descending strength order from VG to P, Greek music. 9420 enough to blot out Iran collision (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, April 11 at 0106, XEPPM in the clear! No ACI with BRAZIL q.v. gone from 6180, instead making big mess from 6148 to 6170. Undermodulated but sufficiently readable fair signal, YL talking about pueblos indígenas, e-mail I think went ondacorta@radioeducacion.com.mx so it`s still separate during the evening from MW 1060 XEEP (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6850.65, April 11 at 0101, pirate music here, poor signal, then kid dialog, 0103 e-mail but missed it, Tarzan yell, ``operator of The Crystal Ship`` mentioned, music; 0114 ``the Bubblegum Express``, more such music; 0124 ``Why aren`t you a Democrat?``, ``The-Crystal-Ship`` ID by roboyl. TCS was on 24 hours earlier with advance notice, but none tonight. Looks like we`ll have to bandscan down to here not to miss a pirate below 7 MHz. I was tuning on USB, but then found it just as readable on LSB, so maybe it was AM, but seemed like the carrier was somewhat reduced.

More matching logs of this; original subject typo says 6859.5 AM:

** PERU. 5980, April 11 at 0058, R. Chaski carrier, I monitor continuously on the PL-880 in case they have reset to cut off circa 0100, but keeps right on going while I check other stuff on the porch with the DX-398. Cutoff as expected, 0107:58*, a new record, 11 seconds later than one binite ago, and now 8 minutes ahead of my clear-sky-at-sunset streetlight firing up (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RWANDA [non]. 17540, April 10 at 1723-1727+ open carrier/dead air, presumably MADAGASCAR failing to modulate R. Impala/Mara; fair signal, sometimes a trace of modulation but may have been cross overload from 17610 WHRI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [and non]. 21600, April 10 at 1907, JBA signal here, WHRI with Brother Scare? Yesterday first day on this new frequency ex-17730, it was blasting in. I assumed it was on NW antenna and maybe it was then, but registered eastward toward Africa. Still, should be more signal than this: maybe propagation disturbance has cut down the first-hop MUF, so I check other mostly US frequencies, finding: missing from 15825, 15610; poor on 17850-Spain, 17790, 15770; fair on 15550, 11760-Cuba; good on 13830, 13605 vs jamming, 12160; very good on 13845, 12105, 12050. Ergo: shorter distances, lower frequencies survive such an event best even at midday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, April 11 at 0114, SLBC carrier is on and I stand by for the off-timesignal and sign-on, but remains nothing but dead air past 0125+. Wake up and add the modulation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1716 monitoring: confirmed on WTWW, 9475, Thursday April 10 at 2101. Next: UT Friday 0327v on WWRB, 5050 (stay tuned: was 9 minutes late last week); Saturday 2330 on WTWW, 9930; UT Sunday 0401 on WTWW, 5830; UT Monday 0300 on Area 51 via WBCQ, 5110v-CUSB; Tuesday 1100, Wednesday 1300 on WRMI, 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7506.6, April 11 at 0110 check, tally another non-broadcast of WRNO. But 7555 is on tonight from KJES (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
