Glenn Hauser logs April 12-13, 2013

** BANGLADESH. 15505, April 13 at 1407 check, BB hum is louder than the presumed Urdu modulation. Missed the off-time signal circa 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake, April 13 before 1300:
11500, fair at 1243 with flutter
11970, poor at 1242
12670, poor at 1243 with flutter
13795, fair at 1241
13830, fair at 1240 with CCI: RFA Tibetan via Tajikistan at 11-14
13920, very good at 1239
14750, very good at 1239
14980, very good at 1239
15560, poor at 1235; none in the 16s, 17s

Firedrake, April 13 before 1400:
15570, fair at 1350; no full search

Firedrake, April 13 after 1400:
15525, good at 1406, mixing with VOT via Madagascar; no full search
15570, fair at 1406, still on past hourtop against V. of Tibet
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15200-15260, April 13 at 1233, defective RHC 15230 transmitter with buzz out plus/minus 30 kHz, worst peaks plus/minus 10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 15040, April 13 at 1255, AIR music in Burmese service is fair, barely far enough away from AIR Sinhala DRM on 15050, and from CHR VOLMET on 15034-USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 11970, UT Saturday April 13 at 0526, NHK English in usual music filler ending the semihour, Japanese song, good with fades in relay via FRANCE to Africa; 0529 ID and full English schedule, times and frequencies only, no sites or targets, off at 0530* unlike previous dead air during the final minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 15575, April 13 at 1234, KBSWR open carrier is already on again way early, very good signal going to waste until 1257 IS and IDs in English, Korean, 1300 opening English, and news --- mostly about the NK threats. 1311 `Touch Base in Seoul`, interview with Cambridge-educated proprietor of Koreabang website. Tho program schedule grid at
http://world.kbs.co.kr/english/about/about_schedule.htm
shows just-retitled `Listeners` Lounge` starts at :25 past the hour, it does not really start until 1331.5; Karen Hardy(?) is new co-host with another YL, ``revamped mailbag show`` but they assure us it`s just a name change, and personnel change, otherwise same features as had been on `Worldwide Friendship`. Can`t find anything on website about the *people* we hear on KBSWR.

I listened to the whole thing for once: after a bit about something that happened this week, 1335 listeners` letters, first from Nick in Kannapolis NC about reception: 15575 with BBC Cyprus QRM [not any more!], both 0200 frequencies blocked by CRI; 3955 sometimes audible, noisy [not any more!]; then from president Mohammed something of the Pakistan Listener Club; then Nick Sharp from Msex who used the online form to say that 7275 is blocked on weekends by Spain, and 11810 is too late at 22 UT = 23 in Britain, midnite in W Europe.

1348, Tech Tips with Jeff finishing up his best-of retrospective. At 1350 I notice there is now ACI from Firedrake on 15570. 1353-1356, Kevin O`Donovan in Farmington is back with 3 minutes of `Listening Tips`, including bad news that SiriusXM is about to drop WRN, while KBS SW to NAm is not dependable; try Tune-In Radio app for Smartphones. Gave SW skeds for REE and Tirana in English. 1356 finally some generalized KBS reception quality reports from various target areas. Just before 1359 also hit by ACI from the other side, VOA 15580 Yankee-Doodle-Dandying, and the Firedrake stays on 15570 past hourtop since it`s against V. of Tibet (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 880, April 13 at 0505 UT, choral NA is playing, started late after local midnite? Finally over at 0508, but faded down too much for ID. I was nulling KRVN almost due north, and found the XE was peaking much further S than the E/W null, and has to be in the CDT zone, so that rules out XEV Chihuahua. See current timezone map:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/time-mexico12.php
Of the other CDT XEs on 880, closest and far most likely, also IDed before, is XETC Torreón, Coahuila, ``Kiuu``, presumed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, April 13 at 0059, splash from 5990 is already off, so instrumental hymn is audible from R. Chaski past 0100; 0101 muffled announcement, 0102 fanfare introducing devotional capsule. Best audio I`ve had from them for some weeks --- S of the Equator, a bit of darkness is gained on the path while we are losing it at this end, a balancing act. Cut off at 0103:18*, roughly 5.5 sex later than last night. With an almost clear sky, my streetlite does not fire on until *0111 again this evening (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN [non]. 11650, April 13 at 0535, R. Dabanga ID in passing, now with het again, jammer? // 15400 not synchronized. 11650 is Vatican, 15400 Madagascar; and per EiBi also on 15550/UAE. Nothing on 12160, where Zacharias Liangas reported this April 4, but is not on any of the schedules (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 15450, April 13 at 1229, VOT IS and opening English; fair signal, program summary includes fortnightly `DX Corner` this week, so I keep checking for it, but does not start until 1300, after hit by ACI from stronger 15445 KSDA Kachin (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1664 monitoring: confirmed on webcast from Area 51, UT Saturday April 13 starting promptly at 0130, presumed also on 5110v-CUSB via WBCQ. Next: Saturday 1730 on WRN via SiriusXM 120 (to be deleted after one more week); Saturday 2330v on WTWW-2 9930, UT Sunday 0400 on WTWW-1 5830, Sunday 2315v on WTWW-2 9930 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, UT Saturday April 13 at 0059, WTWW-2 is on again with music, but off at next check 0109 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11635, Saturday April 13 at 0531, gospel huxter in English, fair signal. Nothing here usually, so I bet it`s a weekend-only WHRI broadcast, or even Saturday-only. Yes, registered as available daily except Fridays 0400-0700, 250 kW, 47 degrees to CIRAF 39 = from Turkey to Yemen (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 21440.5 approx., April 12 at 2108, an AM ham catches my attention as nothing AM is audible above 21450: and soon recognized inimitable voice of The TimTron, i.e. the WBCQ guy, who also does a lot of AM hamming on 80 meters. And who else would utter ``microphonium``? Discussing some technical issue with another weaker AM ham, circa 21439? No belches heard, however.

Finally ID as WA1HLR, a.k.a. per ARRL/FCC lookup: Smith, Timothy M, WA1HLR, in Skowhegan, ME 04976 --- that`s nowhere near Monticello, but west of Bangor, north of Waterville. I assume he also operates from the WBCQ site when there; and could even use broadcast antennas with much more gain than your typical ham setup (there seems to be no limitation on doing this, just so your ham transmitter power is not above the maximium). (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 870, April 13 at 0546 UT, with WWL nulled, weak Vietnamese talk still here, i.e. cheating daytimer KFJZ Fort Worth TX, making SAH of about 200/minute = three and a third Hz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1330, April 13 at 0056 UT, KCKM Monahans TX is also audible in the evening just before sunset here, ``Classic Country music *all* the time``, ``West Texas powerhouse``. In April, 12 kW ND day power is authorized until 0115 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1650, April 13 at 0056 UT looking for KYHN, but instead ``goooooooooaal``, Spanish sports, so must be KSVE El Paso TX (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1470, April 13 at 0458, choral XE NA, but hard to DF amid the QRM; over at 0500 announcement, probably somestation`s full ID, but now lost to Fox `news` from else (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1520, April 13 at 0555, KOKC OKC can`t be nulled completely, but Mexican music station is QRMing considerably, making fast rippling SAH; unfortunately dozed thru hourtop, but still going at 0623 before I QRT completely. Any of the six Mexicans listed in Cantú would be welcome, tho two are supposedly daytimers, and none more than 2 kW.

How about a US station? For SS on 1520, NRC AM Log has nothing closer than a daytimer in California, and a fulltimer in Oregon, KGDD Oregon City, ``La Gran D``, 50/15 kW U3, which means same direxional day & nite --- i.e. an almost circular cardioid with deep null toward OKC, throwing ``all`` the power out into the Pacific. So is KGDD out of whack, anyone else hearing it eastward? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4775-USB, April 13 at 0112, presumed MARS net discussing problems with RMS Express, whatever that is. So much for SWBC from Perú (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15800, April 13 at 1401-1404+ open carrier, fair signal. Suspected a Firedrake transmitter, but not modulating if no Sound of Hope. Only HFCC also has EGYPT, 250 kW, 241 degrees from Abis in Arabic at 1300-1600, but no modulation at all to be distorted. EiBi and Aoki do not show Cairo on 15800, so may be wooden anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
