Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity has declined, with the weekly average daily sunspot number slipping from 57.6 last reporting week to 17.4 over the past week.

Solar flux averages also slipped over the past 2 weeks from 108.1 to 91.9 and to 82.1 over the most recent week. The latest solar flux prediction also appears soft. Solar flux is expected to peak at 86 on December 26-28, hit a low at 82 on January 1-10, and then peak again at 86 on January 21-24.

Predicted values over the next 45 days are 82 on December 18 – 24; 83 on December 25; 86 on December 26 – 28; 85, 84, and 83 on December 29 – 31; 82 on January 1 – January 10; 83, 83, and 84 on January 11 – 13; 85 on January 14 – 20; 86 on January 21 – 24; 85, 84, and 83 on January 25 – 27, and 82 on January 28 – 31.

I noticed after the ARRL 10-Meter Contest last weekend that K7RL had claimed an impressive score of 379,680. Checking his QRZ.com profile, I saw that he’s not only surrounded by salt water on an island in Puget Sound but has an amazing collection of steel and aluminum in the air. He commented to the Western Washington DX Club email list:

“That was much more fun than expected. Every contest has that moment when an interesting mult calls in, or you hit a great opening. My moment was being called by ZD7BG on SSB.

“When the big openings hit both days, you had to be ready to step on the gas and run like crazy because it could end just as quickly. There was always some activity, it was mostly a matter of volume and signal strength. Some signals lasted seconds, if even that, while others were there almost all weekend like KV0Q and K0RF.”

Another impressive effort, but on a much different scale, was K6ARK’s solo SOTA operation.

The National Science Foundation has published an article, “New sunspot cycle could be one of the strongest on record.”

An article in Otago Daily Times celebrated the return of sunspots in New Zealand.

Sunspot numbers for December 10 – 16 were 11, 11, 24, 14, 25, 25, and 12, with a mean of 17.4. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 81.5, 83.3, 81.8, 80.6, 83, 82.9, and 81.9, with a mean of 82.1. Estimated planetary A indices were 8, 7, 4, 5, 3, 3, and 3, with a mean of 4.7. Middle latitude A index was 6, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, and 3, with a mean of 3.3.

North Korea Executes Fishing Fleet Captain for Listening to RFA

Authorities in North Korea executed the owner of a fishing fleet in front of 100 boat captains and fisheries executives for secretly listening to broadcasts by Radio Free Asia and other forbidden media outlets while at sea, sources in the country told RFA.

The fishing boat captain, who picked up the habit of tuning in to broadcasts from abroad while in the military, confessed to having listened to the U.S. government-funded media outlet for more than 15 years, after he was turned in by a resentful crewman at his base in the northeastern port city of Chongjin.

North Korea goes to extraordinary lengths to stop its population from accessing outside information, with strict punishment for violators, but the open sea allows fishermen and merchant mariners the chance to hear forbidden broadcasts.

The captain had been catching fish for the government of Kim Jong Un, which has ordered North Korean fishermen to increase catches amid food shortages and to raise cash in the face of international sanctions aimed at curbing resources for nuclear weapons.

“In mid-October, a captain of a fishing boat from Chongjin was executed by firing squad, on charges of listening to Radio Free Asia regularly over a long period of time,” a law enforcement official from North Hamgyong province told RFA’s Korean Service Wednesday.

“We know that the captain’s surname was Choi and he was in his 40s. He was working out of a fishery base affiliated with the Central Party’s Bureau 39,” the source said, referring to the secret organization tasked with acquiring hard currency and maintaining a slush fund for Kim Jong Un.

“Choi was the owner of a fleet of over 50 ships. During an investigation by the provincial security department, Captain Choi confessed to listening to RFA broadcasts since the age of 24, when he was serving in the military as a radio operator,” the source said.

RFA reported that authorities in June sent a signal corpsman to one of the country’s notorious political prison camps for tuning in to RFA at work, while in November 2018, a signaler in the country’s elite Supreme Guard Command was purged for listening to banned broadcasts, and his whole command was punished.

The North Hamgyong official said that Choi and his subordinates in the military routinely set the dial to RFA when he was in his 30s.

“After he finished military service, he continued to listen to RFA. They say that listening to RFA brought back fond memories of his days in the military. It also seems he was under the illusion that because he was part of Bureau 39’s fishing base, he would be immune to criminal charges, and that seems to have brought on tough consequences for him,” the source said.

“We know that the provincial security department defined his crime as an attempt of subversion against the party. They publicly shot him at the base in front of 100 other captains and managers of the facility’s fish processing plants. They also dismissed or discharged party officials, the base’s administration and the security officers who allowed Choi to work at sea,” said the source.   

Another source, a resident of the province, confirmed to RFA that news of Choi’s execution had spread among the public.

“During the investigation, they found out that when he was out fishing on distant seas, he fixed the frequency and listened continuously to foreign broadcasts,” the second source said.

The source said that with Choi’s growing power and wealth as a fleet owner, he became high-handed toward his crew.

“One of the fishermen sought vengeance for Choi’s arrogant and disrespectful behavior so he reported him to the security department,” the second source said.

The second source said that Choi confessed during his investigation to continuously listening to news of the outside world and music programming from RFA.

“The security authorities decided then that the time to reeducate him had long past, so they executed him by firing squad,” the second source said.

“It is really common for people who work on ships to enjoy broadcasts in the Korean language, such as RFA, through their radio communicators when they go out to the sea. Therefore, it seems that the authorities made an example out of Choi to imprint on the residents that listening to outside radio stations means death,” the second source said.

Two refugees who escaped from North Korea and resettled in the South told RFA Thursday that the Washington-based outlet’s programming is widely consumed by ordinary North Korean residents.

“People are curious about RFA content because the authorities tell us through resident education sessions, which are more like propaganda, to never listen to RFA broadcasting from the U.S., as it is all about anti-DPRK measures,” said one.

The second told RFA that news from abroad is even more popular than TV shows and movies.

“We can get a variety of content from CDs and memory sticks, but what North Koreans most want to know is news from the outside. Residents can get many outside broadcasts, but they prefer RFA because it can be heard clearly in the Korean language,” the second refugee said.

“Military radio operators and fishermen are known to listen to RFA a lot because they are more able to listen to outside broadcasts.”

The State-run Korean Central News Agency recently reported that the Supreme People’s Assembly on Dec. 4 adopted the ‘Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Law,’ indicating that the government may now be placing more scrutiny on citizens caught watching foreign media.

RFA broadcasts six hours of Korean-language programming daily into North Korea over short wave radio from transmitters located about 1,900 miles away in the Northern Mariana Islands, and medium wave transmitters in South Korea.

Radio Free Europe fires a prominent Russian journalist — and the Kremlin smirks

To his Russian admirers, Timur Olevskiy is a kind of latter-day Walter Cronkite or Mike Wallace, a trusted journalist and fearless muckraker. In a country where the press is suppressed and many prying reporters have been killed, Olevskiy has been a rare independent voice, operating outside state controls as a star host for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the U.S. government-funded international news agency affiliated with Voice of America.

So people in Moscow were stunned when Radio Free Europe fired Olevskiy earlier this month. The organization cited his unauthorized participation in an online discussion about Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who has blamed state forces linked to President Vladimir Putin for his near-fatal poisoning by a nerve agent this year.

Olevskiy’s firing has turned into a mini-propaganda coup for the Kremlin, which has used it to portray Radio Free Europe as hypocritical in its claims about free speech.

The discussion that got Olevskiy in trouble involved a conspiratorial theory he had apparently shared with another journalist, Oleg Kashin, about Navalny’s wife’s father being a former KGB agent. Kashin had publicized the rumor, leading to a heated denial from Navalny, who also produced a death certificate to prove that his father-in-law was not secretly living in London as Kashin claimed. As part of an apology, Kashin brought Olevskiy on his YouTube show to explain his understanding of the story.

Yet Olevskiy’s appearance on the show drew him publicly into the uproar. While he said later that his comments on Kashin’s show were taken out of context by his critics, Radio Free Europe moved to fire him.

A Radio Free Europe spokesman, Martins Zvaners, declined Tuesday to elaborate on the dismissal, saying only that Olevskiy was terminated for “violating our policies.” The acting president of the organization, Daisy Sindelar, also declined to comment in a brief phone call on Tuesday.

In an interview, Olevskiy said he was fired for participating during work hours in a 10-minute discussion. But “unofficially, my remarks played a role,” he maintained. “My participation, in the view of the company, was a violation of journalistic neutrality.”

Olevskiy insisted he didn’t endorse the claims about Navalny, though he did say that he had found “unconfirmed” information about an individual who “might” be Navalny’s father-in-law. “I never said that I could confirm anything about [him], nor did I have any verified information . . . I said in my view Navalny should have made this information [about his father-in-law] public to avoid any insinuations.”

In any case, Olevskiy’s termination has proved to be fodder for the kind of state-sponsored campaign that Radio Free Europe was designed to counter when it began broadcasting news and commentary to audiences behind the Iron Curtain in 1949. Its mission is “to promote democratic values and institutions by reporting the news in countries where a free press is banned by the government” and to provide “uncensored news, responsible discussion, and open debate.”

Kremlin-controlled media outlets have portrayed the incident as an example of American censorship and hypocrisy about press freedom. Russia Today, the state-funded multimedia outlet, claimed that the firing was Radio Free Europe’s attempt to protect Navalny, whom the Russian government alleges is working for the CIA, at the expense of its own journalists.

Olevskiy, who has reported on the illegal financial activities of Russian oligarchs and on Russian-sponsored anti-democratic movements in Ukraine and Belarus, was literally the face of Current Time, Radio Free Europe’s Russian-language TV channel. He has been a field reporter and was the moderator of a program called “Evening.”

Trump appointee who oversees Voice of America refuses to cooperate with Biden transition team

When the organization marked its 70th anniversary, it ran ads in Prague, where it is based, featuring photos of Olevskiy reporting from the streets of Moscow during violent anti-Putin protests next to images of Vaclav Havel, the anti-communist dissident and first president of the Czech Republic.

Even while many independent Russian journalists and public figures disapproved of Olevskiy’s comments about Navalny, many of them have spoken out to criticize Radio Free Europe for firing him. A Current Time contributor announced she would no longer work for the channel. Navalny has not commented on the firing.

A further irony: Olevskiy has appealed for his job to Michael Pack, the chief executive of Radio Free Europe’s parent agency, the U.S. Agency for Global Media.

Pack has become notorious among journalists at Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and other agencies under his purview for his efforts to exert control over their work. In only six months on the job, Pack has replaced Voice of America’s director twice, launched an investigation into its White House bureau chief for alleged bias against President Trump and declined to renew the expiring visas of dozens of foreign nationals who help produce its reporting. He has also claimed the right to ignore a rule that keeps political appointees like himself from interfering in editorial matters. Asked for comment, an agency representative would say only that the firing was a “personnel decision” by Radio Free Europe. (Pack apparently was not involved in Olevskiy’s firing.)

In arguing for reinstatement, Olevskiy cited his journalistic achievements and noted that his dismissal will probably force him to leave Prague and return to Russia — a dangerous move, he suggested, given his work for an American news organization.

“In my case, I face a return to a country that has given me the status of a ‘foreign agent,’ ” he said in a letter to Pack. “I believe that when I was recently reporting in Russia on an assignment, I was able to be safe only because of being a journalist with an American organization.”

Olevskiy sent his letter to Pack on Dec. 7. He said he has not received a reply.

Correction: A previous version of this story erroneously suggested that Navalny released his father-in-law’s death certificate to rebut false theories after Oleskiy discussed them on Kashin’s YouTube show. In fact, Olevskiy discussed the theories on the show after Navalny had denied them. The earlier version of the story also suggested that Oleskiy apologized to Navalny before he was fired from Radio Free Europe; he apologized after he was fired. Apparently we have two distinct dialects if not languages, but note the confusion as to how they are spelt, abbr`d in Roman/English.

I`ll bet the waterfalls of both are snaky. I expect there are further instances of this off-frequency/wobbling transmitter before and after 1530/1700. I wish others would pay more attention to such clues. KiwiSDRs with `SAM` capability display frequency offsets numerically and their variations. Even invisibly, they are easy to observe by ear and by precise frequency readouts to the Hz, with the right receiver such as my R75, which should be employed to its fullest capabilities. UNIDENTIFIED. 5985, Dec 16 at 0717, open carrier at S9/+10. Nothing scheduled but unless something totally out of left-field, most likely WRMI which is really here until 0600; altho this signal is a lot stronger than normally into OK off the side of the 222-degree beam.

WRMI skedgrid shows 5985 as XMTR #2 at 0330-0600 only, the only one on a 222-degree antenna, for Central America. EiBi and Aoki agree that is its total timespan, but not all of it is 7 dpw. HFCC too at 0300-0600, but also imaginary entries at 05-07 for CRI Arabic via defunct Albania; a hole at 07-08; and 08-13 1 kW in English from RRI BIA[k?], Indonesia. It seems the numerous wooden entries for RRI long-gone regionals default to language English, which is ludicrous! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Radio Inter 918 kHz reactivated

Radio Inter has finally returned at 918 kHz, now with sporadic tests, although it is unclear whether from the site located on the Humera road, in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), or from the site located on the M-503 road in Villanueva del Pardillo (Madrid). The site has been renovated and a new transmitter has been installed that has a maximum power of 100 kW, although it is supposed to be able to emit with the authorized power of 20 kW.

100 Years special transmission on 810 kHz from Königs-Wusterhausen

100 Years of Radio from Funkerberg Königs Wusterhausen.

On the 22th December from 2 pm to 3 pm [13 UTC to 14 UTC] will be a transmission on 810
kHz from Königs-Wusterhausen in Germany.

As I know they will use a T-antenna from freestanding towers, not the big mast.

The 5960 kHz shortwave frequency on 22nd December at 1300-1400 UTC is via Moosbrunn, Austria (100 kilowatts) re HFCC.

There is a report on a visit to Königs-Wusterhausen museum and transmitter site following the EDXC conference in Germany in 2012 on the BDXC website at: http://bdxc.org.uk/edxc12konigs.pdf - which includes the history of the site. This extract about the broadcast on 22nd December 1920:

"After WW1, the radio station was taken over by the German Imperial Post in 1919, for the transmission of commercial messages. On 22 December 1920 however, a Christmas concert of music was broadcast for the first time, the brainchild of Hans Bredow (who is considered the “Father of German Radio”). The broadcasts, on 2700 metres longwave, resulted in letters from listeners in England, Holland, Luxembourg and the Nordic countries, but none from Germany, where radio listening was forbidden. "

** TURKEY. 5980, Dec 14 at 2123, song at S9, must be V of Turkey, the SSOB from Eurasia, and virtually the OSOB from there. Nothing but music for my napping until 2155 IS and Turkish sign-off announcement to 2156.5* after attaining S9+20 but not enough to overcome my HLLNL = high local line noise level. It will have to do as Sa`udi Qur`an is not making it any more if still on 11820+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2064 monitoring: confirmed Monday December 14 from 1900.9 on IRRS 7290 via Bulgaria, monitored via UTwente with VG signal but as always heavily splashed frequency from both sides: 7295 CRI English Urumqi is back on air after maintenance break last week, and VOV English direct on 7280 is just as bad altho half as adjacent.

I don`t get back from lunch before 1930 to hear how chopped off I may be this week, but at 1939 I find the signal is very poor, at first suspected off early? The two splashers remain much stronger. I try other SDRs: closest to Bulgaria are in Romania and Greece, but they are too far for groundwave, too close for much skywave. A JBA signal to Thessaloniki could be Dan Roberts on SW Report or one of his pickups. At 1950 I  finally try an Eire SDR and hear IRRS definitely still on, but only S8-S9. As usual, his SW Report chopped short at 1959 for IRRS sign-off.

I also monitored the lead-in: 1854 tune-in 7290 open carrier already on with some hum; 7295 China not on yet but in addition to 7280 Vietnam there is a weaker with music on 7285, what? Aoki/NDXC says CRI in Cha language from Xianyang 59 site until 1857; EiBi says CRI in AM language from x site until 1900. ?? EiBi readme.txt language roster shows CHA for Cha`palaa / Chacha in Ecuador; I think not; and AM for Amoy. WRTH 2020 resolves the dilemma, showing no Amoy really at 1800 in B-19, but Chaozhou to Europe on 7285 and 6010. That language in EiBi is abbr`d CC or [nan]! Anyhow, it`s off by 1857* but the much stronger 7295 CRI English is on before 1900. Could our major references ever get together on the lang. abbrs.?! Back to 7290: IRRS ID at sign on from 1859.8, Feature Story News headlines at 1900.4 before WOR.

WOR 2064 also confirmed UT Tuesday December 15 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, noisy S7-S9 here but VG S9+10 into Maine SDR. Next:

** U S A. 5950, Dec 14 at 2122, this WRMI is much stronger than before with a beam change effective today from 285 to 355 degrees. That should not make so much difference here, between them at about 315 degrees from Okeechobee. Something else must have changed, modulation improved, power level raised, and/or antenna sidelobes are now broader too. It`s Bob Biermann, YWS? No, wrapping up at 2158 it`s his other, radical political talkshow, `Truth to Ponder`, wondering how much better the new frequency is for listeners, from a postal address in Georgia. [BTW, everything that I, gh, say is also *the truth* but I don`t have to keep asserting that it is.] Now in daytime, 5950 is S9+10, stronger than only S9 5800 WRMI-10 which despite its 160-azimuth is quite listenable back here, e.g. during two WOR airings.

The WRMI skedgrid http://www.tinyurl.com/WRMIfqs has been updated as of Dec 14, with 9455 eliminated! 5950 is now pm XMTR-8 at 355 degrees, all TOMBS except for 21-23 various and 02-04 Hal Turner. 4980 is supposedly reactivated as XMTR-5 at 285 degrees, the old az. for 5950, mostly SMTV or BS but some other blox at 01-02 & 07-10 UT. Now 11710 applies to XMTR-4 at 160 degrees but with NO transmissions, yet? Be alert for QRP exciter-level emanations like formerly 4980.

Peter Hansen sums up the swaps as: ``What was on 9455 now is on 5950. The programs that were on 5950 are now scheduled to be on 4980. Don't hear 4980 yet, if anyone hears 4980 please let us know. Peter W Hansen`` Nor am I hearing 4980 by 0130 December 15. Bob Biermann himself replies on the WOR iog: ``It may be a while for 4980. It is going to be a difficult frequency change in many levels. Matching to the antenna will take weeks.``

That correlates with this via Chuck Gessner at 0050 UT Dec 15: ```Posted on FaceBook about two hours ago. ``Frequency changes on WRMI --- Effective December 14, 2020, our transmissions on 9455 kHz have been changed to 5950 kHz, and our transmissions that were previously on 5950 kHz will be changed to 4980 kHz in the near future. We are not ready to begin broadcasting on 4980 kHz yet, but we hope to be ready in the coming days. We'll keep you posted.````` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9975, Monday Dec 14 at 2120 checking for KVOH to come back after failure Saturday and holyday Sunday, but nothing yet, direct. But at 2207 I find a big open carrier in 9980 TOMBS WWCR sideband splash; then with some minor carrier peaks, probably really modulated tones measured about: 9974.17, 9973.35, 9972.54. 2210 replaced by music modulation, song mentions Esperanza, S9+20/30 vs WWCR S9+30/40! 2212.5 cuts to tone, 2213 back to praise music; 2215.5 devotional in Spanish from Ejército de Salvación, etc., etc. This is no low power but it still has no business 5 kHz away from WWCR.

In the next hour, Ken Zichi was also hearing this, ``9975 is booming into Michigan at 2315 with SS music. KVOH ID at 2321 and "Voz de Esperanza" at at the bottom of the hour. SINPO 44+54+4 with only my local QRM poking through. This is before the listed s/on in SS so ... a test? Good to hear it back; the Jazz show was one of my favorites when it was on many moons ago. 73  //Ken Zichi``

Prompting this reply on the WOR iog from Ray Robinson at 2337: ``Yes, Ken, that's us. Previously we had the transmitter running OK, but we were only getting a fraction of full power into the antenna. Now that has been resolved. This should be the last afternoon of testing. After today, it will be strictly 0000-0700 UT. Ray.``

Another look at the skedgrid, which now clarifies UT vs local days: Major music blox 6-daily, no doubt interrupted for evangelism, are: 0200-0255 `Swing Shift` with Pat Conrad, 0400-0500 `Song in the Night` with Scott Martin; 0600-0700 `Jazz Session` with Pat Conrad. At 0231 UT Tuesday, preaching break, Pat thinks it`s ``Sunday night``.

BUT: by 0200 UT December 15, opening English, 9975 is VP, only S5-S6 to Missouri SDR, and even worse here, S5 about = the HLLNL, unusable. Is it propagation, or underpowered again? By 0225 to MO has built up to S6-S9, now listenable but noisy and fadey; S5-S7 into Bonaire (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

334-MCW kHz, Dec 14 at 0730 UT, dash and YER, 200 watts at Fort Severn, Ontario. Where`s that? ``Fort Severn First Nation is a Western Swampy Cree First Nation band government located on Hudson Bay and is the most northern community in Ontario, Canada. In 2001, the population was 401, consisting of 90 families in an area of 40 square kilometres. Wikipedia``

332-MCW kHz, Dec 14 at 0732 UT, dash and YT, mixing with IC Wichita, which is quite weak, but the usual overrider is QT from Thunder Bay. Maybe I mis-copied. There is also YTE, 1000 watts from Cape Dorset, which I would much rather log as first from Nunavut, and the E-dot could have got lost in the mix. Also a third JBA signal, copied as YIS? Does not compute. Maybe really FIS in Key West - Fish Hook FL, 400 watts. Need to try these again!

** U S A. 13655-13660, Mon Dec 14 at 1631, my previous report reminds me to attempt to decode WINB DRM as scheduled M-F 12-17 UT. KC9FFV KiwiSDR at Forney TX is getting it when tuned to 13655 - never mind its LSB, S7-S8, S/N circa 14.0 dB which is not enough for solid decode, lo-fi 8.28 kbps audio in and out with heavily African-accented English by gospel huxter. WINB website will *not* provide a 24-hour program sked for the webcast, but Listen Live now sounds like the same guy; analog SW does not start 9265V-wobble until 2000 UT Mondays.

I look at the sked by program name, none obviously African, and none in the EST AMs on Mondays, just PMs. Maybe I can catch the name, listening again to the DRM from 1657? Now it`s stronger at S9/+10, but SNR of only 1-2 dB! so nothing audible. About 1700 the S-meter drops to S7 as WINB turns off, leaving the band noise level. Then I can hear an AM on 13660, see FRANCE. BTW, WINB-DRM was back on 7310-7315-7320 after 07 UT Monday rather than unscheduled 9260-9265-9270 as heard UT Sunday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Solar activity was reached low levels on 07 Dec due to a
long-duration C7/1f flare observed at 07/1632 UTC from Region 2790
(S22, L=252, class/area=Hsx/80 on 10 Dec). The associated halo CME
arrived at Earth just after 10/0000 UTC as an interplanetary shock,
and with the driver directed south of the ecliptic plane. Solar
activity was at very low levels throughout the remainder of the
period with B-class flare activity.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was
normal to moderate throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field reached active levels early on 10 Dec due to the
arrival of the 07 Dec CME. Quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions
were observed throughout the remainder of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
14 December - 09 January 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the
outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to reach high levels on 21-25 Dec, with normal to moderate
levels expected to persist throughout the remainder of the outlook
period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on
20-22 Dec due to CH HSS influences. Quiet and quiet to unsettled

ERITREA   Thanks to a tip of hjb Hans-Joerg Biener Germany noted a tiny signal of Asmara Eritrea twice this Monday UT afternoon 7140.020 kHz at 15.56 UT noted in Athens Greece and Doha Qatar Perseus Net remotedly, but on very tiny 1 to 5 kW power level, when compared to other well known signals from NE and ME / HoAF, SoAsia.

Now at 17.06 UT on Dec 14 again same tiny signal on real Asmara 'footprint frequency'.

** CHILE? 7610.0-AM, Dec 12 at 2308, weak continuous music, JBA S8-S9 via Pardinho, Brasil SDR with lighting crashes from a few little storms over SP state. Weaker S7, less signal but also less noisy at Santiago SDR. I`m checking this right after I hear some guy on WRMI 7780 mention Claudio Galaz` logs of RCW again = Radio Compañía Worldwide, considered to be a Chilean pirate, mainly reported by him.

Why not try to fix it with TDOA? 2312 first try puts it in the NE corner of Brasil on the coast. I doubt that. Next try using SDRs in DR, Paraguay, Chile lands at 41.20 south, 68.30 west, which is N central Argentina. I would still not rule out really Chile. 2340 finally hear an announcement, sounds like Dino Bloise, but back to music rather than `Frecuencia al Día` which CGT has also heard on this station. Reception now better tho crashier at Pardinho. 2352 briely some ``running water`` ute QRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, UT Sun Dec 13 at 0736, no RHC English, and all other frequencies are off. Bodes ill for Esperanto at 0800. 6100 is normally at least the one staying on past 0700. Something`s always wrong at RHC. But at 0820 rousing I do find 6100 back on during Esperanto, S9+20 but undermodulated. Next Esperanto also confirmed at 1610 on 11760 & 15140 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** RUSSIA. 4625, Dec 12 at 2358, the ``Buzzer`` in well via UTwente, two-tone, lower-higher buzzy pulses continuously. Andy Reid had just reported it from Ontario to the WOR iog: ``[WOR] The Russian buzzer is propagating well as of this writing. 4625 2353 UT Dec 12``. First I try Maine SDR but no go there, so doubt it will reach OK either. Switching UTwente between USB and LSB by 0022 Dec 13, I notice that the second, higher tone is hardly audible when tuned in LSB, both of them equally, in USB. This thing has been subject of doomsday scenarios and quite a mystery as to its real purpose (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

I am standing by to hear what happen at 0430 when WHRI is scheduled to start 7490. Just before then, PJJP is saying he would never expect to thank the Federalist Society, but gives that credit for SCOTUS justices, even Drumpf appointees, being strict-construxionists denying his attempts to steal the elexion --- when he is chopped off the air abruptly at 0430* --- does he know WBCQ is doing this to him? Maybe pre-recorded but obviously recent/current. His show is supposed to run until 0500.

7490.0, a few seconds later before *0431, a stronger signal cuts on without ID, but obviously WHRI, now with gospel music and huxters; 0447 ``Hello, Overcomer`` but this is not TOMBS. 0459 ending RW Ministry from McHenry MD, NO ID; 0500, `Christian Worship Hour`. 0558 fill music, 0558.5 ad to support Voice of Martyrs, the persecuted Yazidi Christians in Iraq --- WHRI used to insert these between Voice of Vietnam relays on 7315, incongruously. 0559 finally `Onward Christian Soldiers` militaristic crusader theme and ``WHRI, Cypress Creek SC`` ID, itself cut off by 0600* before music can finish, how rude! All this as heard for convenience via Warrenton MO SDR still running after WOR check earlier.

6160v, what`s on the other WBCQ? At 0422 UT Sunday December 13, A ``pagan`` show from Wisconsin, claiming to be on WBCQ Friday nights, see the sked --- ?? NOT there or now for either frequency. By 0431, 6160 in song, 0437 an off-key parody of ``Also Sprach Zarathustra``; 0438 musing that may start a new transmitter on ``5100`` weekends, and call it ``Area 51`` --- so decades-old recording referring to its original frequency, later 5110, 5130, and gone; 0441 as a `countdown` program dated Dec 10, 2001; ``Seldom Heard Radio`` with Frederick Moe, 36 West Main[e?] St., Warner NH, unclear website. One I find: http://seldomheardradio.blogspot.com/ Lotsa stuff but dating from 2005 to 2010y only, not before or since.

On all other days of week, 6160v has been carrying a far-right wacko live? conspiracy talkshow at 0400-0600 except for UT Mondays the weekly white racist `Herald of Truth` at 0400-0500, both of which were originally on WBCQ 7490v, but had to move and bump other programs off 6160v due to WHRI on 7490 from 0430. Once WBCQ buys WHRI, presumably this can be rearranged more equitably. Or everything but World`s Last Chance flat-earthiness gets blown off, like 9330.

The talkshow is *still* shown on the WBCQ skedgrid as on 7490, not 6160! Don`t blame listeners if confused about which station they are really hearing on 7490, especially since WHRI suppresses any ID until sign-off! Meanwhile I have been looking at the WBCQ websked to try to figure out what is going on. At first it is very strange with spurious words replacing some entries in the days-of-week columns: On, You, Know. Header says something about New Year programs. Also popping up is an offer to translate this page from Italian! Now, or always? How about never possibly. Maybe it is being edited or hacked. It`s back to normal by 0519 altho still incorrect (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Via Lubbock SDR, still tuned to last night`s unsuccessful 9975 check for KVOH, Sat Dec 12 from 2020, I am hearing some S5-S7 music hard to place, but VOA Korean via Thailand is listed 1900-2100. Oh oh, 2033, Spanish ``Ésta es --`` algo and then recognizable praise music in Spanish, so looks like KVOH is on long before 0000, a time not authorized, testing instead of 17775? No sign of VOA which is 250 kW at 38 degrees thisaway.

LSB needed to avoid VG 9980 WWCR, which is why KVOH is not supposed to start until WWCR off at 0000. Maybe it`s still there somewhere, but on website I haven`t found any KVOH program schedule for the 24h streaming, or the former 17775 which would not be in Spanish midday Saturday; just the new 00-07 SW segment.

[BTW, believe it or not, during this I am multi-tasking to the fifth degree: KVOH panned to mostly one earphone from one SDR; WOR via WA0RCR via another SDR, panned to the other earphone, including the ``17790 IS`` at 2050 which is not clipped out for ham radio, so does not qualify as music? Plenty of ham modes employ tones in a similar way and that`s obviously kosher; also two PBS TV channels, one of them muted with captions; and continuing interjexions from my neighbor who knows more about medieval Spain than the TV scholars. I, anyway, once visited Córdoba well into the last century --- the one in Spain, not the lesser copies in Argentina or México, or almost Alaska. That is: ``The Ornament of the World tells the story of a remarkable time in history when the Muslims, Christians and Jews forged a common cultural identity that frequently transcended their religious differences.`` Make that six, also writing this.]

9975: At 2049 into Spanish sermon about ``delitos`` = sins, 2051 mentions Los Ángeles``, 2054 ID La Voz de la Esperanza, carol ``El Tamborilero``.

Ray Robinson only replies that it`s a ``Low power test.`` How low?

Still at 2214 with music. So is KVOH now all set for a real full-power broadcast after 0000 UT Sunday December 13 as scheduled? NO! Check at 0048, nothing there via Lubbock SDR, nor at 0103 direct. 0300 when `Wavescan` scheduled: still not via Lubbock; 0600 still nothing direct. So it seems KVOH has not one, but two broken transmitters. Maybe they should try broadcasting to Americas via Zambia. Hmmm, wasn`t that originally part of the plan, at least S America? ** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Dec 13 at 0124, WTWW-2 still ham news, but 0128 recheck, now `TOUTA` has started, so I switch to $tereo webcast. Xmasmx of course, and Bob Heil says it will be nothing-but, for rest of year, finishing at 0157 and back to inorganic rock (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9260-9265-9270, Sunday December 13 at 0738, DRM noise above 9265, but something else digital below 9265, surely WINB hybrid which supposedly does this M-F only, and on 7315 from 0700, not 9265 until 1000! What`s going on? I have yet to get around to listening to what programming they put on half a DRM signal, likely little but gospel huxters, when I am conveniently on computer to access a DRM-capable SDR, M-F 12-17 UT on 13655-13660. FRS Season's Greetings

Christmas 2020 casts its shadow forward and we are approaching the end of 2020. An almost (?) surrealistic year. Perspectives for 2021 are hopeful but it will take time and patience before our hopes will be fulfilled, looking at the upcoming start of vaccination.

Special year
For us at FRS-Holland it was a special year too. 2020 marked our 200th official shortwave broadcast back in August and the icing on the cake was the celebration of our 40th Anniversary a few weeks ago. April saw a broadcast of hope right in the middle of the first Covid-19 wave. Last Summer we did an experiment with The FRS Summer Splash: three successive thematic broadcasts.

40th Anniversary broadcast
The November 8th on air 40th anniversary celebration exceeded our expectations. That day we were heard with good signals on - apart from 7700 & 5790- also on 6195, 6160, 3920. A great success!
I remember that Saturday I went to our P.O.Box 2702... it was crammed with letters...snailmail! Together with all e-mails we can only be happy and proud. The comprehensive preparations to make it an interesting, successful and memorable broadcast paid off!

CD, Booklet & QSL
It's my guess it won't surprise you that the months prior to November 8th were fully focused on preparing, organizing etc. There was no time for other 'business'. Nevertheless we felt it was the right moment for a souvenir CD ánd booklet. And: we had to work on creating/ producing an unique Anniversary QSL as well. It was not until a week after the Anniversary broadcast that a start was made to produce the CD, booklet and QSL.

In the mean time the 'ingredients' for the CD have been finished. The main idea for the special QSL card has been worked out and even better: the QSL has already been printed. Those who send a reception report/letter to P.O.Box 2702 will not regret it: the 40th Anniversary QSL is (in my humble opinion) a success and looks splendid. It's a folded A4, printed on heavy quality paper in full color. Wait and see!

For those who sent an e-mail report, regretting (after reading the above) they didn't go for a hard copy: you can still get your unique QSL by writing to P.O.Box 2702. We have printed a few extra ones but remember: this QSL is only issued for the 40th Anniversary broadcast!
Without exaggeration: the hard copy QSL is by far the best option!
The CD & booklet will be finished in the next few days. Final conclusion: a bit of patience is required.

Traditional December broadcast
The FRS Seasonal December broadcast is scheduled for Sunday December 27th, the day after Boxing Day. It's a tradition we won't give up.
So except a nice mix of great music, items & information in a few weeks' time.
