Albert Einstein, when asked to describe Radio, replied:
"You see, Wire Telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this?And Radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there.The only difference is that there is no cat."

In 1893, in St. Louis, Missouri, Nikola Tesla made devices for his experiments with electricity. Addressing the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and the National Electric Light Association, he described and demonstrated in detail the principles of his wireless work. The descriptions contained all the elements that were later incorporated into radio systems before the development of the vacuum tube. He initially experimented with magnetic receivers, unlike the coherers (detecting devices consisting of tubes filled with iron filings which had been invented by Temistocle Calzecchi-Onesti at Fermo in Italy in 1884) used by Guglielmo Marconi and other early experimenters.
The first public demonstration of wireless telegraphy took place in the lecture theater of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History on August 14, 1894, carried out by Professor Oliver Lodge and Alexander Muirhead. During the demonstration a radio signal was sent from the neighboring Clarendon laboratory building, and received by apparatus in the lecture theater.
In 1895 Alexander Stepanovich Popov built his first radio receiver, which contained a coherer. Further refined as a lightning detector, it was presented to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society on May 7, 1895. A depiction of Popov's lightning detector was printed in the Journal of the Russian Physical and Chemical Society the same year. Popov's receiver was created on the basis of Lodge's receiver, and originally intended for reproduction of its experiments.

In 1896, Marconi was awarded the British patent 12039, Improvements in transmitting electrical impulses and signals and in apparatus there-for, for radio. In 1897 he established the world's first radio station on the Isle of Wight, England. Marconi opened the world's first "wireless" factory in Hall Street, Chelmsford, England in 1898, employing around 50 people.
The next great invention was the vacuum tube detector, invented by Westinghouse engineers. On Christmas Eve, 1906, Reginald Fessenden used a synchronous rotary-spark transmitter for the first radio program broadcast, from Ocean Bluff-Brant Rock, Massachusetts. Ships at sea heard a broadcast that included Fessenden playing O Holy Night on the violin and reading a passage from the Bible. The first radio news program was broadcast August 31, 1920 by station 8MK in Detroit, Michigan. The first college radio station began broadcasting on October 14, 1920, from Union College, Schenectady, New York under the personal call letters of Wendell King, an African-American student at the school. That month 2ADD, later renamed WRUC in 1940, aired what is believed to be the first public entertainment broadcast in the United States, a series of Thursday night concerts initially heard within a 100-mile (160 km) radius and later for a 1,000-mile (1,600 km) radius. In November 1920, it aired the first broadcast of a sporting event. At 9 pm on August 27, 1920, Sociedad Radio Argentina aired a live performance of Richard Wagner's Parsifal opera from the Coliseo Theater in downtown Buenos Aires, only about twenty homes in the city had a receiver to tune in. Meanwhile, Regular entertainment broadcasts commenced in 1922 from the Marconi Research Centre at Writtle, England.
In 1960, Sony introduced its first transistorized radio, small enough to fit in a vest pocket, and able to be powered by a small battery. It was durable, because there were no tubes to burn out. Over the next 20 years, transistors replaced tubes almost completely except for very high-power uses. By 1963 color television was being regularly transmitted commercially, and the first (radio) communication satellite, TELSTAR, was launched. In the late 1960s, the U.S. long-distance telephone network began to convert to a digital network, employing digital radios for many of its links. In the 1970s, LORAN became the premier radio navigation system. Soon, the U.S. Navy experimented with satellite navigation, culminating in the invention and launch of the GPS constellation in 1987. In the early 1990s, amateur radio experimenters began to use personal computers with audio cards to process radio signals. In 1994, the U.S. Army and DARPA launched an aggressive, successful project to construct a software defined radio that can be programmed to be virtually any radio by changing its software program. Digital transmissions began to be applied to broadcasting in the late 1990s.

The history of pirate radio--radio broadcasts offered by unlicensed broadcasters as alternatives to licensed, commercial radio programming--is difficult to trace, both in America and the Europe since mention of pirate broadcasts of a less-then-thrilling nature are rarely found. Also, until 1927, the U.S. government did not formally regulate broadcasting and spectrum allocation. The best-documented examples of pirate radio come from England, where pirate radio thrives. The UK pirates, such as Radio Caroline and Radio Veronica, operate their stations for profit, broadcast virtually around the clock, and solicit advertising from large, coprorate sponsors. Moreover, the UK station owners are usually financially affiliated with music publishing firms or record companies. In contrast to the UK pirates, U.S. pirate radio stations operate on shoestring budgets, broadcast irregularly, rarely attempt to turn a profit, do not solicit advertising, and keep a very low profile. The Federal Communications Commission has an attitude of "selective enforcement," meaning that it acts on complaints and interference, but does not seek out pirate broadcasters. Although ostensibly pirate radio provides an alternative to commercial radio broadcasts, in reality pirate radio broadcasts do not offer a substantially alternative form of programming.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 13 FEBRUARY - 10 MARCH 2008

Solar activity is expected to be very low. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 13 - 24 February and 29 February - 10 March. The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled to active on 13 February due a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected during 14 - 15 February as the high-speed stream gradually subsides. Mostly quiet conditions are forecast for 16 - 27 February. Activity is expected to increase to active levels during 28 - 29 February due to another recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected during 01 - 07 March as the high-speed stream subsides. Activity is expected to increase to active levels during 08 - 09 March with minor to major storm periods possible at high latitudes due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Unsettled conditions are expected on the last day of the period as the high-speed stream begins to subside.

Un transistor al Museo

In occasione del sessantesimo anniversario LSI dona una replica del primo transistor prodotto al Computer History Museum. LSI Corporation ha fatto dono di una copia del primo transistor al Computer History Museum a Mountain View, California, per celebrare il sessantesimo anniversario dell'invenzione del transistor. Inventato dagli scienziati dei laboratori Bell John Bardeen, Walter Brattain e William Shockley 60 anni fa, il transistor è l'elemento base degli attuali circuiti integrati, il cervello dietro ogni cosa: dal computer al cellulare, dai missili teleguidati ai peacemaker cardiaci. Il transistor è stato prodotto industrialmente per la prima volta all'ex stabilimento della Western Electric (poi divenuta Agere Systems) sull'Union Boulevard di Allentown, Pennsylvania, nel 1951. Agere si è fusa con LSI Logic il 2 aprile 2007 per formare la LSI Corporation. "Si dice spesso che i risultati di oggi sono possibili perché sediamo sulle spalle dei giganti della generazione che ci ha preceduto - ha detto Abhi Talwalkar, presidente e amministratore delegato di LSI -. Questa massima è particolarmente vera oggi, mentre celebriamo l'invenzione del transistor, che è senza dubbio la più importante invenzione del ventesimo secolo. Per fortuna, lo spirito innovativo che ha creato il transistor oggi brilla più luminoso che mai." John Toole, amministratore delegato del Computer History Museum, ha dichiarato: "Il Computer History Museum è felice di aggiungere questa replica del primo transistor alla propria collezione nel sessantesimo anniversario della sua invenzione. Rai, canone globale

In base a una legge del 1938 l'azienda pubblica può chiedere il pagamento della tassa su telefonini, computer e persino alle Poste. E ora la Rai prova a chiedere il canone su cellulari, computer e tutto quello che vi permette di ricevere qualcosa, persino su un soffio di vento se potesse. E' una delle tante eredità del regime fascista, il 'canone di abbonamento', definito in un Regio decreto legge del 1938. Deve pagare chiunque abbia 'apparecchi atti o adattabili alla ricezione delle radioaudizioni'. All'epoca poteva trattarsi di radio e poco altro. Oggi, invece, si può applicare su gran parte dei nostri adorati giochini digitali. La Rai, infatti, non ha perso tempo. Pretende la tassa non solo per i televisori, ma anche per 'personal computer, decoder e altri apparecchi multimediali'. Non doveva avere spazio nelle sue lettere quest'anno, ma potete giurarci che dall'anno prossimo nel suo elenco inserirà anche iPod, videocellulari, videocamere, riproduttori Dvd e Vhs, macchine fotografiche digitali, e chissà cos'altro ancora. Parlamentari e associazioni di consumatori da oltre un anno chiedono una risposta alle istituzioni: quali sono gli apparecchi atti o adattabili soggetti al canone/tassa? L'Aduc lo ha chiesto al servizio Rispondi Rai, alle sedi regionali della Rai, all'Agenzia delle Entrate, al ministro della Finanza. Lo ha fatto per telefono, per lettera raccomandata a/r di messa in mora e con ben cinque interrogazioni parlamentari. Fino ad oggi, spiegano in un comunicato, ' siamo stati cortesemente ignorati'. L'ultimo tentativo risale a pochi giorni fa, è una richiesta alla Direzione generale del ministero delle Finanze. Contrariamente ad altre forme di richiesta, in mancanza di una risposta, il contribuente può far valere la sua interpretazione della legge, senza incorrere in future sanzioni. Insomma, vale una sorta di silenzio-assenso. Per questo l'Aduc invita tutti i cittadini sprovvisti di televisore, ma in possesso di altri apparecchi multimediali (computer, etc.) per i quali hanno ricevuto una richiesta di pagamento da parte della Rai a proporre quello che si chiama un interpello al ministero delle Finanze. Se non vi sara' risposta, si potrà tranquillamente non pagare piu' il canone/tassa per computer e altri apparecchi multimediali senza rischi di incorrere in sanzioni. L'associazione fornisce anche il modulo a chi ne avesse bisogno. E' la fine di un'odissea dell'associazione iniziata oltre un anno fa. La prima volta che l'Aduc se ne era occupata era risultato che il canone doveva essere pagato anche da chi è in possesso di un videocitofono. Poi le hanno risposto che secondo la legge in vigore (la 246/1938) il pagamento di questa tassa è previsto anche per il turista in visita nel nostro Paese. Una terza ricerca ha rivelato che gli uffici regionali della Rai, l'Ufficio normative e contratti del servizio pubblico, il ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze ed all'Agenzia delle Entrate non sanno minimamente se anche gli esercizi pubblici debbano pagare il canone speciale di abbonamento qualora in possesso di un computer. L'unica certezza è che esiste una situazione di tacito consenso per cui molti piccoli esercizi commerciali, i cui gestori, per altro, pagano già il canone per casa loro non sono perseguiti per il non pagamento del canone dovuto al possesso di un computer. In altre parole, le manchevolezze della legge vengono supplite dalla sua parziale non applicazione, spiega Donatella Poretti la parlamentare della rosa nel Pugno che sulla ha preentato diverse interrogazioni parlamentari. Infine, le Poste italiane: dispongono di 14.000 uffici dotati agli sportelli di 'apparecchi atti o adattabili' come prevede la legge del 1938 e quindi sono soggetti al canone così come qualsiasi privato cittadino. 'Inutile dire che le poste italiane probabilmente sono i maggiori evasori di questa tassa', conclude Donatella Poretti. Circa 13.018.880 euro. (Flavia Amabile - La Stampa)

GRAN BRETAGNA; RADIO DIGITALE IN CRISI, CHIUDONO STAZIONI DI NICCHIA

In Gran Bretagna, dove e' stata lanciata quasi un decennio fa, la radio digitale appare in crisi e per cinque stazioni di nicchia - in forte perdita a causa dell'insoddisfacente numero di ascoltatori - e' gia' stata decisa la chiusura. La crisi e' venuta alla scoperto in tutta la sua gravita' ieri quando la piu' grande compagnia del settore - GCap - ha annunciato la morte di altre due stazioni disponibili soltanto in digitale, theJazz e Planet Rock. Con 360.000 ascoltatori al giorno la prima e 560.000 la seconda, ne' theJazz ne' Planet Rock riescono a mantenersi con la raccolta pubblicitaria e cesseranno le trasmissioni alla fine del prossimo marzo. Tre mesi fa Gcp (che ha investito la bellezza di 110 milioni di euro per lo sviluppo della radio digitale) aveva fatto fare la stessa brutta fine a Core e Life e il 1 febbraio anche Oneword - una stazione specializzata nella lettura di testi letterari - e' sparita dalle frequenze. 'La radio digitale ha avuto un decollo estremamente lento e non appare economicamente profittevole', ha dichiarato Fru Hazlitt - amministratore delegato di GCap - quando ha ieri spiegato il perche' del disimpegno. La signora Hazlitt ha indicato che la sua compagnia si concentrera' sull'Fm e puntera' in particolare allo sviluppo di trasmissioni radiofoniche per gli Ipod. Al momento attuale il digitale viene usato in Gran Bretagna per circa il 10% di tutti gli ascolti radio ma la stragande maggioranza se ne serve semplicemente per accedere alle emittenti gia' presenti nello spettro FM (in primo luogo quelle della Bbc). Le radio digitali di nicchia occupano appena il 4% del consumo complessivo e sono tutte in profondo rosso. Sulla scia del drastico ridimensionamento deciso da Gcap gli esperti britannici si chiedono adesso se Dab - la radio digitale - abbia ancora o no un futuro. Paradossalmente la vendita di ricevitori Dab prosegue a gonfie vele e nelle case del Regno Unito ce ne sono circa 6,5 milioni di esemplari. La molla che spinge all'acquisto non e' pero' la possibilita' di accedere ad un numero maggiore di stazioni (come avviene invece con la tv digitale terrestre) ma l'opportunita' di una superiore qualita' di suono (niente fruscii, niente interferenze) rispetto all'FM.

RAI: IN BURKINA FASO PER SVILUPPARE CINEMA E RADIO

In Africa il primo se non unico mezzo di comunicazione, in assenza di tv, computer, fax, palmare e cose del genere e' la radio e da alcuni anni la Rai, con il Segretariato Sociale e la Città di Torino hanno promosso iniziative per sviluppare e aiutare in quei paesi, in particolare il Burkina Faso, la diffusione proprio della radio e, in generale, della cultura. Cosi' domani partono da Torino una giornalista e un tecnico della Rai di Aosta, Alessandra Ferraro e Bruno Bethaz e un consulente del Segretariato Sociale di Torino, Armando Bonaiuto, per Ouagadougu, capitale del Burkina. Lo scopo e' tenere un corso di formazione tecnico-gestionale e di comunicazione radiofonica per tecnici e giornalisti. Vi parteciperanno 40 addetti alla comunicazione, tra cui dipendenti della Radio Municipale (RMO/fm) di Ouagadougou che ha un bacino di utenza di un milione e 600.000 persone ed e' considerato uno dei maggiori veicoli di informazione democratica del Burkina.
