World Music Radio on even frequency
World Music Radio (WMR) is broadcasting with 100 W only - not 8 kW - on 5840 kHz from Randers, Denmark - 24 hours 7 days a week - using an inverted V aerial. It was way back in 2004-05 that WMR was broadcasting with 7 kW (from Karup, Denmark)
Please :-)
I've adjusted the frequency 8 Hz up, so it should be back on 5840.000 kHz. I hope.
And remember also - WMR - Saturday and Sundays on 15805 kHz (200 W) at 07-20 UTC - currently with a new 3 element yagi aerial beamed towards Northern Scandinavia, Japan and Western North America.

Propagation News – 28 July 2019
Last week HF was once again dominated by sporadic E openings. On Wednesday FT8 contacts were being made across Europe on 28MHz, from Finland in the north to Spain in the south. It was a similar story on Thursday with S9 signals from the Balearic Islands to Norway. As we head towards August it is best to make the most of these, as the Es season will start to fade quite soon.
Other than sporadic E it has been quiet on the HF bands in general.
NOAA predicts that next week the Sun will continue to be spotless, with a solar flux index of 67. Geomagnetic conditions are likely to remain settled, with the Kp index predicted to be around two to three. The solar wind is currently more settled, with speeds down into the 300 to 400km per second range. However, a large solar coronal hole is making its way around the Sun. Its equatorial position means it is likely to have an impact on the Earth. Our best guess is that this could be mid-week, likely resulting in increased solar wind speeds, an elevated K-index and depressed maximum useable frequencies.
VHF and up
There is a warm, but unsettled theme to the weather in the next week, but like the last few days this hot weather can produce some very strong ducting over the seas around the British Isles. This means that tropo is always a possibility during this period. The unsettled nature of the weather is also going to lead to some potentially heavy showers on some days, bringing with them a chance of rain scatter.
We are still in the sporadic E season, so it’s always worth checking for openings. They tend to favour mid-morning, late afternoon or early evening. Follow the jet stream charts on the various websites—for example, propquest.co.uk—and use the daily blog to guide you as to which directions seem most likely to produce results. Sporadic E patches are created by the horizontal wind shear on the edges of these strong upper flows of air in the troposphere. These generate turbulence and launch atmospheric gravity waves up to the E region, where they produce vertical wind shear.
The Moon reaches maximum declination on Tuesday and perigee next Friday so it’s a good week for EME.
Another propagation mode to signal for attention is meteor scatter, with two small showers this week peaking on Tuesday. The Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids are then followed by the major shower, the Perseids, in the next week or two, with a broad peak around 12 and 13 August.
Sentech Shuts Meyerton Shortwave Site
South Africa-based public broadcast signal distributor, Sentech, shutdown its shortwave station in Meyerton at the end of March. The closure was planned and follows years of financial losses.
The state built Meyerton decades ago and in the post-apartheid era and operated it as a brokered station for both international and South African customers.
As a result of the termination, Channel Africa, the country’s international service to Africa, is no longer on shortwave. “Our joint efforts with BCC World Service to discourage Sentech from switching off fell on deaf ears,” explains Solly Phetoe, the station’s general manager. The Sentech-sponsored weekly transmissions of the South African Radio League have also come to end.
Radio Sonder Grense is a domestic service broadcasting in the Afrikaans language. It relied on shortwave to reach the remote areas of the country’s Northern Cape province. “From our estimates and from the amount of complaints I’ve received it [the audience] was very little,” said Johann Pieterse, station producer. But the Mybroadband online South African publication reported that Radio Sonder Grense’s closure means “many South Africans living in the Northern Cape” now have to rely upon the “BBC and other international broadcasters for reliable news.”
Sentech’s shortwave facility had annual revenues of around US$2 million. The amount of annual broadcast hours had slowly dwindled to less than half of what it was a decade ago.
In April 2013, Sentech launched a three-year plan to gain shortwave profitability. The company’s goal was to carry profitable services only and restructure staffing to reflect the reduction in total services. The effort failed.
Sentech attributed the decline in its shortwave business to the internet and satellite broadcasting. Facing what it described as high maintenance costs and viewing analog shortwave as an obsolete technology, Sentech changed course in 2017. It approved a plan to shutdown the site as well as a transition to Digital Radio Mondiale. A conference was held in May 2018 to examine its impact and to discuss alternative funding methods.
Phetoe suggested radio advertising at the event, but traditionally large shortwave stations have not succeeded in advertising products and services.
Any DRM conversion will require substantial capital investment given Sentech’s aging transmitters and have to take into account the lack of DRM receivers.
Will Channel Africa find a new site? “We are negotiating with Sentech to provide an alternative shortwave platform,” said Phetoe.

Hannover Maker Faire 2019 special mediumwave broadcast
On the occasion of the big maker meeting in Hanover from 17 to 18 August, radio amateurs from OV Hannover (H13) will activate a medium wave transmitter as part of an event radio. With the approval of the responsible state media agency and Federal Network Agency, it works on 828 kHz with 100 mW ERP. The content is planned to present the event. There will be live interviews with visitors and in the run-up to several politicians greetings to speak, which are interspersed in the current program. As a small highlight, the technicians of the OV have come up with the idea of touching the carrier by ± 100 Hz with CW signals. This is not heard with a normal AM receiver, so do not bother. However, if you use a high-precision receiver and set the receive QRG and bandwidth correctly, you can hear CW. The signal - in other words: key pressed - is sent to 828 kHz plus 100 Hz. 828 kHz minus 100 Hz then represents the pause. Normally the BNetzA prescribes a frequency constancy of the carrier of ± 10 Hz. The request to extend this to ± 100 Hz to enable the CW broadcast was unbureaucratically complied with. It is also planned to run the station during the night from the 17th to the 18th and probably also in the night from the 18th to the 19th of August. Reception reports gladly accept the OV's assets. The antenna will be set up on the 12th of August and first tests and optimizations will be made from then on. A detailed report can be found in the September issue of CQ DL.

** ALBANIA. 9570 & 6020, July 24 at 0003, no signals from CRI relays to North America. Wolfgang Bueschel assumes Cërrik off for summer maintenance in the 23-05 UT overnight period, other transmissions also missing after 23 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 6100, July 25 at 0535, RHC English, S9+20/30 but suptorted, and also JBA on 2 x 6100 = 12200. 6000 also suptorted and weaker; 6165 weakest but not suptorted? 5040 not suptorted but loud with hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC.
Feliz 26 de julio! Patria o Suerte, ¡Pensaremos! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NEW ZEALAND. 11725, July 25 at 2105, English news from RNZI, S4-S3. Not often heard here, now propagating as their midwinter lower morning frequency for two hours from 2059, but should be better on 13840 from 2259. No more 15720 until spring (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NORTH AMERICA. 7470, July 25 at 0402, Station YHWH is back, barely recognizable on peaks, vs cross-mod from huge 7335 & 7435 Radio Martà signals --- not a usual problem with the R75, but maybe having to run the noise blanker too causes it. Had been unreported for about a week, but tnx now due to timely tips on the WOR io group from Walt Salmaniw and Rick Barton. Still going at 0529 with better signal here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6160.096V, July 24 at 0602, JBA carrier vs S9+20 local line noise level which is severely impacting my DXing below 8 MHz. New frequency of WBCQ first reported earlier in the daytime by Chris Smolinski in Maryland. Allan Weiner had mentioned this plan on previous AWWW July 20, and was newly registered in HFCC as 50 kW, 24 h, 245 degrees, same power and azimuth as all the other ``classic`` WBCQs. Presumed to be the off-frequency transmitter previously on 9330.1v carrying almost nothing but Brother Scare, but that frequency open, now standing by for the 500 kW World`s Last Chance nonsense to resume sometime in August. One might expect the same BS content on 6160, but a twit from AW via Artie Bigley says lots of time is for sale on it.
I hear the JBA carrier again at 0101 July 25 when I make the above measurement, tho wobbles slightly. As one might have expected, with splash from 6165 RHC. If it`s really running all day as well as all night, should be interesting to compare with 6070-. 1 kW CFRX Toronto reception in closer environs.
7490.18, July 25 at 0237, music and WBCQ jingle, S9+10/20 vs HNL, instead of `Hal Turner Show` scheduled 01-03 UT Thursdays. Also detectable JBA carriers on 5130.38, 6160.1.
BTW, http://wbcq.com/schedule/ doesn`t show 6160 yet but includes 9330 WLC daily at 0400-0400, i.e. forever (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
