Glenn Hauser logs October 26, 2013

** BOLIVIA [and non]. 6134.88, Oct 26 at 0048, music, poor signal but no het from 6135.0 and not // 11855 very poor talk with flutter, so R. Santa Cruz is on, and Brasil`s R. Aparecida is off from 6135 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. Another check UT Oct 26 for the circa 0100 AIR anomalies: This time I have the recorder handy in case the unknown 36-37 note IS appear again on 11985, but there is not even any signal on 11985! Could be due to disturbed propagation, except 11740 Goa is still there, altho with SAH from CCI, poor with flutter.

9910, Oct 26 at 0055, tone test 1 kHz, typical of what AIR sometimes runs on 11985 at this time, prior to starting the wrong service Sindhi at 0100 --- AND there is NO signal on 11985, so suspect tonight it`s doubly wrong. Uplooked later, 9910 is supposed to be in a sesquihour break between two Aligarh site transmissions, Tamil ending at 0045, and Pashto starting at 0215; while 11985 is listed as Khampur site for Sinhala at 0045-0115. At 0058 tone stops on 9910 and standard AIR IS starts; but other stuff to check including Chaski and pirates around hourtop. When I return to 9910 at 0106, it`s off, so somebody fixed that mistake, but still nothing audible on 11985; 11740 is still on; and 9870 VBS from Bengaluru is in as usual mixing Turkey with one more day to go of that collision (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6930-AM, Oct 26 at 0051, very poor signal with music; also music past 0100 when it`s a little better, but then overshadowed by 6925-USB pirate. This thread
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,13414.0.html
identifies the 6930 as Boom Box Radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925-USB, Oct 26 at 0101 must have just come on as splashing upon weaker AM station on 6930 (Boom Box Radio); announcement by robo-fem, couldn`t copy for sure and right now the DX-398 battery of 4 x AA cells expire as I have been trying to squeeze every last drop of juice out of them; I have the new set standing by, and back in business by 0105 during a song about hillbillies, 0108 another YL announcement and just stops. Listening a couple minutes longer, some weak and hesitant CW, perhaps from something else. Seemed to start a call sign with V----. This thread IDs the music station as WAHR == Automated Halloween Radio:
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,13416.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 26 at 0050, JBA carrier from R. Chaski,  until cutoff at 0102:09* which is 10.5 seconds later than last check 48 hours earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1692 monitoring: confirmed on Area 51 webcast starting at 0203 UT Saturday Oct 26 after some entertainment. Barely audible on 5110v at 0229 check. Next: Sat 0630 & 1430 (or not?) on HLR 7265-CUSB; Sat 1500 on WRMI 9955; Sat 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sun 0401v on WTWW-1 5830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1680, Oct 26 at 0043 UT, not much signal on DX-398 until I plug in the external shortwire; then there`s HS football with a team named Wildcats, which are surely all over, but this correlates with Wossmann HS in Monroe LA, playing tonight vs Rayville; presumed KRJO Monroe LA instead of Classic Country (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 24-25, 2013

** BANGLADESH. 15505, Oct 25 at 1357, BB carrier already on with continuous 1-kHz tone until 1359:38.5 finally starts IS, but only time for one play of it, then off-timesignal ending at 1400:17.5, opening Urdu, very poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jamming Oct 25 before and after 1330:
9200, happened to tune in at 1313 to open carrier and hear CNR1 modulation start at exactly 1314; no sign of Sound of Hope target.

Then a full search 18-12 MHz:
16360, poor at 1323; none in the 17s
16100, fair at 1323 with flutter
15970, fair at 1324 with flutter
15575, very poor at 1328 instead of KBSWR, het on lo side from VOT
15545, very poor at 1328, het on hi side from V. of Tibet, Tajikistan
13530, very good! at 1332 with flutter; none in the 14s or 12s

Normally I don`t bother to compare frequencies for synchrony but:
13830, poor at 1334, found to be 2 seconds ahead of 13530
11640, good at 1336 in echo jamming, one of which is synch // 13530
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 9526-, Oct 25 at 1315, VOI news in English about forest fires; fair with flutter. Modulation OK, no IADs, but still calls for a lot of concentration to copy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 15400 // 15300, Oct 25 at 1326, Qur`an at about equally poor level from VIRI`s Urdu service, both Kamalabad. Beware, in B-13 from Oct 27, HCJB KNX Australia moves the E/SE Asian service from 15490 back to 15400 at 0955-1300; and IRIB will be gone from both 15400 and 15300 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN. 5985.0, Oct 25 at *1329 JSR carrier, adding het to the much weaker carrier from MYANMAR [q.v.] around 5985.78; 1330:04 sad piano theme music and Sea Breeze opening in English, as usual on Fridays. But it`s really too poor to follow further (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 4000, Oct 25 at 1154, no distorted Pyongyang signal here, unlike yesterday; so LSB ham a few kHz below was in the clear for his Bible lesson (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 800, Oct 25 at 1209 UT, ``CaLibre 800`` is the name of the newscast on Radio Cañón, XEROK, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Opening crime headlines punxuated by dramatic music. Refers to XEROK being on a (once) clear channel, canal libre. Still dominant with virtually zero-beat KQCV OKC nulled, close to 90 degrees away. No scratchy QRM noted from Pato Donaldo, XEDD Montemorelos NL until 1225 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 870, Oct 25 at 1217 UT, XETAR with greeting in Spanish from someone upon the station`s 31st anniversary festival, presumably today in 1982y. During the 1218 minute, two timechex as 6:17. Live YL announcer, like me, has some hum on her mike, goes away with music. Come on: odd-year anniversaries, especially prime numbers, are hardly significant, but in much of LA, every single anniversary is celebrated, rather than multiples of 5s, 10s or 25s. La Voz de la Sierra Tarahumara, Guachochi, Chihuahua (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MYANMAR. 5985.78, Oct 25 at 1327, very poor carrier, no doubt Yangon, as JSR [see JAPAN] comes on at 1329, making het, on my keyboard it`s closest to G5 which is 784 Hz. Consider the 8-digit approximate (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 89.3, Oct 24 at 1658 UT, as I am close to Loyal on US 81, check of KIEL confirms it is on the air and still with strange gospel network Radio 740 International; interrupted by cue tones, but nothing happens, while music plays. Closer to 1700 more cue tones, nothing for a few more seconds until local automated ID fires plus automated 12:00 timecheck. By the time I get to Kingfisher, birthplace of Sam Walton as proudly signed on the hwy, the signal is already losing out. Next approach at 0330 UT October 25, after playing some Bach mixed in with more overt contemporary gospel music, I see that the ST icon is missing at near-local range, so in memory of Bruce Elving, it`s definitely transmitting in mono. Dentro-Enid, remains obscured by local 89.1 translator (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Observations in and around OKC, Oct 24-UT 25:

102.3, and 107.1, no sign of pirate activity as previously. Any news of other pirate FM frequencies now?

92.9, Oct 24 at 2350 UT, 24/7 comedy is here // 1560 KEBC, and good thing it is, since even in NE OKC, 1560 is getting QRM from presumed KGOW, Houston market sportster.

92.9 is licensed to Fred R and Evelyn K Morton, while 1560 is licensed to Tyler Media LLC, a multi-station group. The Mortons also own the 96.5 translator in OKC, no others in OK state. (Mom-and-pop translators for rent, as many of them are, should make an interesting small-business story.)

FCC AM Query shows 92.9 as the only OK outside KBEZ Tulsa, K225BN, 75 watts at 145 m above ground level, but with an application to move to a slightly different site, 200 watts at 280 meters. Topo map indicates somewhere near the I-35/I-240 junxion in south OKC. I hate those FCC topo maps because they do not pinpoint the sites! We can only assume they are somewhere near the center, and sometimes there are ``radio towers`` indicated somewhere on them from decades ago, not necessarily in the middle, which could be something else, not even broadcasters.

The WTFDA FM database for K225BN does not show any info on format or station relayed. Some FCC translator listings show the station being rebroadcast, but not this one. Now we know.

Except: for the APP, FCC does show the primary: KOMA (FM)! Why in the world would full-power 92.5 KOMA need a translator on the second adjacent channel up??? I suspect that is just a place-holder. Possibly they did put KOMA on it previously for the record.

1220, Oct 24 at 2348 UT, KTLV Midwest City is certainly audible in OKC, with gospel huxtering. It`s one of the ``unreported`` AM stations this century according to David Yocis of NRC DX News. I`ve also heard it in Enid, but it`s tough, certainly the least of OKC market AM stations (well, except KREF 1400 Norman due to KCRC 1390 Enid); need a quiet location and to minimize splash from 1230 Ponca. NRC AM Log says slogan is ``Your Key To Living Victoriously`` --- and all this time I thought it just stood for ``TweLVe``.

1640, Oct 24 at 0240 UT on SH 3, NW outskirts of OKC, KZLS, True Oldies, is already getting rather heavy fast-SAH QRM from a talk station, no doubt WTNI Biloxi MS, which is no doubt still on 10 kW day power instead of 1 kW. KZLS should sue them, or at least turn them in to the FCC. Back in Enid, closer to transmitter site Hennessey, WTNI is not so much of a problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1210, Oct 25 at 1229 UT, hardly anything from KGYN Guymon, then fades in enough to hear a ``US Country`` ID; no change in signal at 1230. You never know whether KGYN will be on ND day or direxional night at any time of the day or night. They have 3 towers in a line aimed right at Philadelphia, right next to the hiway east of Guymon with call letters on the shack. Times in UT to check for real day/night changes:
1245-0015 Oct
1330-2330 Nov
I see in FCC AM Query that KGYN still has a CP to change from 10/10 kW to 50/10/39 kW, using 2 towers day and critical hours, 3 at night. Unfortunately, the pattern plots are missing from the linx (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 17860, Oct 25 at 1320, RRI, Chinese talk into music, poor signal but no jamming audible, nor is any known to Aoki; otherwise it would be 17860*. What`s wrong with RRI? Don`t they ever report any news embarrassing to China? Being jammed by the ChiCom is a journalistic badge of honor. This schedule changes Oct 27, not sure to where (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1692 monitoring: confirmed on WTWW-1, 9479, Thursday Oct 24 from 2101:20. Also confirmed on WWRB, 5050, UT Friday Oct 25 from just before 0328, with the previous preacher curtailed. Next: UT Saturday 0200v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; Sat 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUSB (or not?); Sat 1500 on WRMI 9955; Sat 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sun 0401v on WTWW-1 5830. Yes, I am aware there is some hum on the recording which I did not notice until it was all done; don`t know where it came from but will try to get rid of it next week (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 550, Oct 24 at 2340 UT, `Behind the Mike` show with Graham McNamee in 1940y(?) answering listener questions about radio history, including: the first broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera was in 1910 when Caruso was singing backstage, and picked up by a ship-at-sea. This was a segment during `When Radio Was` on KFRM Salina KS. I believe WRW is at 6-7 pm CT, ending just in time for official October sunset at 0000 UT, when power cuts from 5000 to 110 watts; but in November SS moves way up to 2315 UT = 6:15 pm CDT/5:15 pm CST, meaning no more near-local signal into OKC. So the last half-sesquihour of WRW will still be on day power on Friday Nov 1, but only on night power from Nov 4. Pattern is same day and night, broadly aimed southwest. KFRM justifiably claims much of OK in its prime daytime coverage area. (KSAL 1150 Salina also reaches well into OK days, and with a night lobe toward Enid) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING GIGEST)

** U S A. 880, Oct 25 at 1220 UT, with KRVN nulled, continuous chanting on almost a single note, ultimately morphing into a familiar Christian hymn tune with Navajo lyrix, as KHAC Tse Bonito NM (suburb of Window Rock AZ) is again audible long before sunrise, non-direxional day and night powers being 10000, and 430 watts (PSRA is also 430 yearound). So is this really only 430 watts? FCC linx no topo map for this one, but longitude of site is 109-01-13 west, so is this really in AZ or NM? Quick Google found entire AZ legal eastern boundary with NM as ``one hundred nine degrees, two minutes, fifty-nine and twenty-five one-hundredths seconds west``. Geez, why didn`t they make it 109-00-00.00 even? Anyhow, that puts KHAC in NM.

Meanwhile at 1222 UT Oct 25, the other and bigger 50 kW Navajo Nation station, 660 KTNN, a few km away, remains unheard around here, so properly direxional away from New York; at this time, only two Mexicans mixing on 660, one talk, one music, along with KSKY and/or KCRO (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1680, Oct 24 at 2347 UT, classic country signal from KRJO Monroe LA is very poor and with some CCI from presumed Ada MI, while all the other usual X-banders, many further away, such as 1690 Chicago and 1670 Madison, are at usual good levels, thus reaffirming my earlier observations that something`s wrong at KRJO, apparently running even less than 1 kW; in compensation for WTNI 1640 running more? (Glenn Hauser, Oklahoma City OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search Oct 25: after finding 2-7 MHz from Asia propagating poorly today, did not expect any on MW, but there they are: usual JBA carriers at 1203-1205: 693, 747, 774, 972, likely Japan and Korea South. Today`s sunrise here not until 1248.

WWV fembot reported at 1318: 10/24 flux 161(!), Ap 9 (? Not sure due to a fade/distortion and poor enunciation of the fembot who refuses to repeat the numbers even tho there is plenty of time to do so! Back to e-mail from WWV: it was 3); K at 12 was 0. Past 24 hours: R3 blackout; next 24 hours: minor, G1 storm and R1 blackout (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7680, Oct 25 at 1242, fair unmodulated carrier is cutting on and off in regular pattern, twice at a time two seconds apart starting every 7.5 seconds or so, i.e. 8 pairs per minute; whence and why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

XVRB 6045 The Music Museum Is about to merge with Shortwave Rock 6045!
Considering it takes a lot of time and effort to maintain a website, answer
DX mails and send e-QSL cards to shortwave radio fans the decision was made
to collaborate with the Shortwave Rock 6045 station, also heard on 6045 kHz
The merger is a practical action, taken to offer some more service to our
audience, especially the DX fans who’ve sent us their reception reports.
The XVRB brand is not going to vanish, as in the future we are going to
rebuild the format, trying to reach the American shortwave market. We don’t
know when this project will start. XVRB 6045 The Music Museum has been on
air since August 2010. We’ve had a beautiful time, together with all you
guys and girls who send us your e-mails and reception reports.
Mike Wilson will start a new programme on Shortwave Rock 6045, presenting
his first hour on the station on November 17 1000-1100 on 6045 via Nauen.

Glenn Hauser logs October 24, 2013 [more]

** BRAZIL. 11780, Oct 24 at 0512, RNA usual very good strength, but distorted, and unstable carrier. Can`t they tell something is wrong in Rodeador Park?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGSEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 4000, Oct 24 at 1255, strong signal with very distorted Korean talk, 1256 horn music; 1300, 3+1 accurate timesignal with finale higher-pitched and prolonged, like NHK. In pause before it, a dull roar, but not exactly a jamming sound. Continuous Korean talk continues after 1300 so I search for a // between 3 and 7 MHz, and none of the Koreans/clandestines match, including 3480, 3985, 4450, 4557, 6012, 6250, 6348, 6400, 6600.

Finally at 9665 I do get a match at 1311 just as they are both starting martial choral music! So it`s KCBS Pyongyang, Kanggye site on 9665. The closest Kanggye site to 4000 listed in Aoki is 3959 – with same service, so maybe that one off-frequency, unheard there. If the sites don`t have to match, KCBS is also listed from other low-power sites on 3976, 3980 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 690, Oct 24 at 0531 UT, ID by SHVA mentions Zacatecas, so must be per Cantú:
690 XEMA La Mejor + FM 107.1 Fresnillo, Zac. 50,000 2,000
A state seldom heard here. With SAH from KGGF KS open carrier amid other QRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1030, Oct 24 at 1240 UT, several news items about Chihuahua city, with sounders between them, heavy CCI; Then promos ``alta definición`` on 103.3 FM coordinated with 1430 AM, and four different Fórmula HD channels (wouldn`t that require a second FM transmitter? I may have missed the other one). There is no 1430 anywhere in Chihuahua state, nor a 103.3. That obviously refers to the Fórmula flagship in México DF, where HD is widely transmitted (no 1430 there either). This one is not in Chihuahua city either but per Cantú:
1030 XEYC Radio Fórmula Cd. Juárez, Chih. 5,000 500
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1692 monitoring: confirmed first airing after 0330 UT Thursday Oct 24 on webcast of WRMI, inaudible on 9955. Then:
Thu 2101 on WTWW-1 9479
UT Fri 0327v on WWRB 5050
UT Sat 0200v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB
Sat 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUSB
Sat 1500 on WRMI 9955
Sat 2329v on WTWW-2 9930
UT Sun 0401 on WTWW-1 5830
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1140, Oct 24 at 1236 UT, ``Radio Las Américas, 11-40`` ID after norteña music, loops about ENE/WSW. No such slogan listed for a Mexican and there aren`t any westward from XEMR Monterrey, the nighttime dominator. The SS in Arkansas is ``La Más Mexicana`` --- or was --- Google soon leads to Rogers AR now branded with this new slogan, broadening its scope:
https://www.facebook.com/lamasmexicana?ref=stream&filter=2
http://www.lasamericas1140am.com/
Autolaunches webcast whether you want it or not.

Really KLTK, COL Centerton AR, address in Rogers, 5 kW ND daytimer. Must be a fairly recent change, as still with old slogan in NRC AM Log 2013 and the last time I logged it. Per own website, also look out for ``La Más Perrototota y Punto``, ``Pura Música Perrona``. The new name may have more to do with Supermercados Las Américas than continental outreach, whose ads are splashed all over the page; new station owner? FCC AM Query still shows licensee as La Mas Mexicana LLC.

I figure perrototota would be too idiomatic for my paper 626-page Random House dixionary, and I am right; perrona isn`t in it either, and both also stump Google translate. So what do these terms mean or connote? Are they familiar to any Mexican/American, or regionalisms? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 24, 2013

** CHAD. 6165, Oct 24 at 0051, again no signal from RNT even tho Habana is not yet on to block it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11985, Oct 24 at 0053, yet another anomaly from All India Radio, Delhi-Khampur site, which is supposed to be amid the 0045-0115 Sinhala service like // 11740 via Goa, and sometimes really is. But now on 11985, fair with flutter, is an interval signal I have never heard before and nothing like the usual one from AIR. It`s 36 or 37 notes on a piano, mostly in higher register, repeating over and over between very brief pauses. Also with hum. Meanwhile 11740 is totally separate with talk in presumed Sinhala. 11985 IS keeps going past 0100 which of course is not hourtop in out-of-step India, except it morphs into that out-of-whack webfeed or skipping-tape sound I have heard before. Traces of the same melody can be heard within it. 0102 it`s improved, still breaking up; 0107 better with less breakup. 0108.5 stops suddenly leaving just some hum on open carrier and for the next minute or so till I quit. Wish I had a recorder handy for this possibly
unique IS transmission (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6935-AM, Oct 24 at 0055, very poor signal conveying music with a heavy beat; only pirate on the band now. 0104 recheck it`s much better at poor-fair level, still heavy beat; 0106 announcement says ``check us out online at liquidradioonline.com`` and more music.

Later, I do, and find that forwards to unrestricted

Oct 4: ``To shortwave DXers whom have heard our international signal: Contrary to claims by certain individuls, yes the signal you were hearing is only 10 watts carrier power and around 40 watts peak. Those who claim 10 watts can not be heard, are the ones not doing it right.``

Oct 12: ``Work on the broadcast antenna has been completed, and it's perfectly matched! (1:1 VSWR) We're in the process of finishing up work on the masting, and hope to be back at full power sometime this month. Until then we're still on at low power.``

Oct 14: ``So this is the state of Liquid Radio at the moment. As many of you know, the website URL leads to this page, as site hosting was becoming too expensive. This of course makes the link for our Saturday night simulcasts hard to find. This is only temporary, as there is a search going on for a cheaper space provider. The FM signal is still in the process of improvement. The antenna and masting work are complete, but there is still improvements to be done with the transmitter. Unfortunately doing the job right, takes time. Eventually there will be a website and the FM signal will be functioning at full power again.``

Mentioned elsewhere several times is 97.7 as the FM frequency --- that should make Liquid`s location pretty obvious to anyone who can hear it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 24 at 0050, BA carrier with some talk modulation from R. Chaski, which was inaudible, maybe off early, last night. Now I track it until cutoff at 0101:58.5*. As it ws not checked on Oct 21 or 22, the latest to compare with is 4 days ago on Oct 20 when it went off at 0101:34*. Now it`s 24.5 seconds later divided by 4 = 6.125 seconds later per day, which is more than the usual 5.25 per. Maybe it got out of sequence by missing Oct 23 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, Oct 24 at 0049 check, WTWW-1 is back on the air after missing earlier today and last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4780, Oct 24 at 0047-0109, no sign of the Qur`an station heard 24 hours earlier, maybe Djibouti. A weak carrier on 4782-, however, no doubt Ecuador, which was not even hetting the 4780 last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12758.5-LSB, Oct 24 at 0052, colloquial Spanish 2-way, good signal as I am checking for AFN Diego Garcia on 12759-USB. First time I have run into this in the way (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHAD. 6165, Oct 23 at 0055 before Cuba is on, no sign of RNT tonight. Not checked for a few nights, so wonder if still sporadic or finished the the all-night broadcasts? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake [non] CNR1 jamming, Oct 23 after 1300:
7310, good at 1301 but with echo and CCI from LAH, vs SOH
7365, good at 1301 with echo jamming too, vs VOA
7385, good at 1301 with echo jamming, vs RTI
7445, good at 1301 with echo, CCI, and SAH, vs RTI
No other chex today (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5025, Oct 23 at 0539, R. Rebelde with song, considerably undermodulated compared to 5040 RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 5985, Oct 23 at 1329 OC with het, 1330 piano theme and Shiokaze signing on, very poor. The het from Myanmar on the hi side is not 5985.3 as I misstated previously but close to 5985.8; Ron Howard measured it recetnly as 5985.77v (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, Oct 23 at 1214 UT, Nuevo León state PSA, then ID as ABC Radio, Monterrey, with FM and AM frequencies, phone numbers, but did not hear any callsigns; then news headlines. Cantú shows:
660 XEFZ ABC Radio Monterrey, N.L. 10,000 1,000
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 850, Oct 23 at 1229 UT, with KOA nulled, Brazuguese is startling, but it`s a clip during news, soon followed by Pres. Obama in English, and someone in English with a French accent, none of it directly translated, probably about spying; then to narration in Spanish during Milenio Noticias, 7:30 TC, so from DF TV feed? Then ID as Milenio Radio listing FM frequencies in several cities: including 103.7 Monterrey, 99.5 ---, 95.3 Tijuana, 99.3 Saltillo, 103.7 Chihuahua; followed by further promos for the last one, as we already knew this would be XEM Chihuahua city, where it`s only 6:30 am. Next week will be confusing, as most of Mexico goes off DST a week before we, and the border cities do (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1030, Oct 23 at 1235 UT, ID for 98.9, time as 6:35, so the match on UT -6 timezone and FM frequency in Cantú is:
1030 XEMPM Exa + FM 98.9 Los Mochis, Sin. 10,000 1,000
altho they also mentioned California; no BCS on 1030, but they should have listeners across the Sea of Cortez (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGET)

** OKLAHOMA [non]. 1230, Oct 23 at 0511 UT, I finally have the computer on past local midnite, enjoying `Map Is Not Territory` on KSFR webcast, so also check the WBBZ Ponca City webcast --- it`s music, not Coast to Coast AM, so scratch that as possible source of my previous unID on 1230 --- must have been some graveyarder much further (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 22 circa 0100: no check for Chaski, but Oct 23 at 0052, no signal detectable, in heavy music splash from 5990 China via Cuba. I can just about always detect at least a JBA carrier, so suspect it is off tonight. Another quick check at 0058, brief JBA carrier, maybe this or not, but gone again. Instead I have something more interesting on 4780: see UNIDENTIFIED (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 5875, Oct 23 at 1259, good signal from BBCWS ending `From Our Own Correspondent`, one of their best shows. I assume it is still split and scattered in 10-minute segments to fill out semihours of other shortened feature shows. 5875 is the Sunday & Wednesday frequency of the THAILAND relay at 12-14 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5779.5-USB, Oct 23 at 0056, MARS contacts between NNN0TD and NNN0GBI who is state director for New Mexico; and they discuss their other ``billet(?) calls``, whatever that means, and I am not sure which one applies to which, AFE6TM and NNN0TSO; also mention Navy/Marine Corps MARS. Now starts the post-research.
http://navymars.org/south/reg6/nmwtx/nmwtx.htm
shows NNN0GBI apparently as general call for the NM/West Texas MARS. NNN0TSO is the individual Richard Norton, State Director (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1692: ready for first airing UT Thursday Oct 24 at 0330 on WRMI 9955; Thursday 2101 on WTWW-1 9479; UT Friday 0327v on WWRB 5050; UT Sat 0200v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; Saturday 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUBS; Saturday 1500 on WRMI 9955; Saturday 2329v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sunday 0401 on WTWW-1 5830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, Oct 23 at 0540, WTWW-1 is off, but WTWW-2 is on 5085; at 1258, 5830 is also/still off; at 1305, WTWW-1 is off 9479 as is -2  off 9930. But at 1324, WTWW-3 is on 12105 in Russian, and now 9930 is on with BS (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880, Oct 23 at 1245 UT, Navajo syllables heard with KRVN nulled, another pre-sunrise appearance by KHAC Window Rock AZ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 930, Oct 23 at 1247 UT, in tight WKY OKC null, country music, English announcement, TC as 5:47, 1250 segué. Only fit in the UT-7 zone per NRC AM Log is: KAFF Flagstaff AZ, C&W, 5000/31 watts, PSRA 500, always non-direxional. But PSRA start-time of 6 am local MST would not come until 1300 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP carrier search Oct 23 at 1237-1242: 693, 774, 828, 873, 972, 1053 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 740, Oct 23 at 1226 UT I finally manage to hear some Spanish briefly under KRMG Tulsa before it goes to day power/tower. May have mentioned ``Radio Santa Fe`` or similar syllables. Don`t find any Mexican or US station with such a name; NRC AM Log does show KIDR Phoenix AZ as Spanish religion, but I can`t find a website for it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4780, Oct 23 at 0053, starting my almost-nightly 60m bandscan with DX-398 on the porch, next up from 4765 Cuba is ---- Qur`an! on 4780, poor signal. Never anything like this heard before at this hour. Keeps going without break thru 0100 hourtop. This version is quite melodic with some reverb added, like I have heard on certain other stations, but which? Both on the DX-398 and separate G8 I quickly start searching for a // on the 6, 7, 9, 11, 13 and even 15 MHz bands, but none found. Definitely *not* // 9760 Oman, 12080 Iran, 9965 Cairo.

The only Islamic-world station ordinarily on 4780 is of course Djibouti, normally not on the air until 0300 or so and IIRC has also been missing lately. Not being Ramadan, it`s much too early for it to be on the air unless something special is ongoing. Checked Djibouti holiday references and none now, altho there was one a week ago.

4780 is weakening by 0113, 0117, but still audible at 0123. The signal sometimes fades below a threshold, which is suspiciously like a receiver image, but to produce one, there would have to be a very strong signal on a higher frequency (like 5680, = 2 x 450 IF) which there certainly is not. By the time I get inside to check it on the FRG-7, it`s inaudible.

It could be a one-off, some transmitter totally mistuned, punching in a wrong number, unlikely to show up again. We`ll certainly keep checking. I`d say Djibouti off-schedule is the most likely source. Did anyone else hear it and with anything identifiable?

Another possibility is a difference mixing product radiating between two higher SW frequencies at the same site, and neither one of them would necessarily be audible, e.g. somethings on the 11 and 7 MHz bands, 4780 kHz apart.

Or, a leapfrog mixing product from the 7 MHz band over same-site transmitter on the 6 MHz band, solely as an example: 7220 leaping over 6000 to land on 4780, another 1220 kHz lower.

Yet another possibility would be a subharmonic of 9560, one half that frequency, from a mistuned or unfiltered transmitter generating 9560 from a lower frequency --- but nothing Arabic heard or scheduled there, just some Chinese, presumably Kashgar.

No, 4780 does not work out either to be a possible harmonic of any exact 9- or 10-kHz MW channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1692, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
