there is a huge difference between AIR India technical quality

Glenn Hauser logs January 2-3, 2022

** CANADA. 351 MCW kHz, Jan 3 at 0422 UT, dash and YKQ, 500 watt NDB at Fort Rupert / Waskaganish, Québec. I was tuned to 350 USB, another check for RG in OKC, still AWOL. This is at the southern tip of James Bay near the Ontario border (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA [non]. 11790, Mon Jan 3 at 1607, Horn-of-Africish song, talk mentions Iesus Christ, S7/S9. It`s Bible Voice in Oromo via Nauen, GERMANY, per Aoki Sun/Mon/Tue only with other Ethiopian languages in a convoluted schedule until 1800. What a shame Canada`s #1 SW voice to the world are gospel huxters instead of RCI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non?]. 5040, Jan 3 at 0432, S7-S9 open carrier, RHC? Too weak unless something be drastically wrong; too strong and too early to be Vanuatu. 5025 Rebelde is also much weaker than usual. Something`s always wrong? at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9650, Jan 3 at 0450, RHC Spanish, S9+20, overmodulated & distorted, modulation cutting out. This is the Antillas service supposed to switch from 9710 at 0000. // always weaker 9535 for C America. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Jan 3 at 0452, RHC English here instead of alt. 6165, VG S9+30 and good modulation; propaganda claiming Cuba is ``not on its knees``, and the ``economy is viable``. Time for another link to The Other Side, altho not exactly the same subject:

``Like the Prosecutor's Office, Cuban judges turn their backs on justice in the trials against 11-J protesters --- They have not challenged the lack of arguments to support the crime of sedition, nor the absence of impartial witnesses against the accused. Lucía Alfonso Mirabal, La Habana 03 Ene 2022 - 16:29 CET`` https://diariodecuba.com/derechos-humanos/1641223798_36544.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 1670+, Jan 3 at 0720, music making a low audible heterodyne on the plus side of talk from WOZN Wisconsin, which had been the dominant 1670 here, surely the new, Mexican as Terry Krueger, Niceville FL, has just measured: ``1670.05 MEXICO XEFCR Reynosa, Tamaulipas 0718 12/23/21 Still here and on the high side with nonstop pop oldies``. Otherwise I have a tough time getting Mexican X-banders (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 350 MCW kHz, January 3 at 1555, RG, NDB at OKC is still off the air. Guess flights into/outof Will Rogers World Airport don`t really need it. Other Okies remain off for a long time: 255 SW Stillwater, and 341 EI Enid (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11815v, Jan 3 at 1606 UT, VOT Turkish is strong enough to audiblize squeal on transmitter, much like WEWN; could it be the same model? Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2119 monitoring: confirmed Sunday January 2 at 2101 on IRRS SW vis AM Italia, 918 kHz, S9+19 into nearby Noale SDR, atop CCI likely Madrid; following 2100 full IRRS ID with address.

Also confirmed Sun Jan 2 at 2330 on WRMIs: 9955 S9 into Maryland SDR, no jamming audible; and 5950 at S9/+10.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 3 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG S9+10/15 into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 3 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, S9/+5 into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Mon Jan 3 after 0230 on WRN North America webcast.

Also confirmed UT Mon Jan 3 at 0402 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6160, -57 Hz into Missouri remote = 6159.943, VP signal after a coughing fit from 0358 by JL?, 0402 ID. Next:

2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed?]
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. 5085, Jan 3 at 0433, WTWW-2 is unusually off this early, and along with it the parasitic spurs circa 5072 & 5097. Then I see this posted at 0415:

``[WOR] 5085 transmitter problems --- Not sure whether anyone else noticed, but 5085 suddenly dropped off the air sometime about an hour ago (now 0413). Clearly a fault of some sort. Just now, I'm catching microsecond bursts of speech, so they're trying to fix things at WTWW. I was enjoying their music program while working in the shack. Hope they make it back soon! 73, Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 3360, UT Mon Jan 3 at 0255, I go to the Athens GA remote which is still tuned for me to 3360, but NF from WWRB is off already. Did not get it reconfirmed at all this weekend. Span seems shorter on Sunday night than Saturday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9385, Jan 3 at 0448, S4/5 of dead air, must be WEWN English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1030, Jan 3 at 1546 UT, YL in Spanish. Got to be KCTA Corpus Christi TX, I thought, until finding one other possibility in NRC AM Log, WGSP 50 KW Memphis TN. And KCTA program schedule shows English at this time, in fact very little Spanish: Sat 19-21 UT only. https://kctaradio.com/blog/program-schedule/ BTW, KCTA stands for Know Christ The Answer, a back-formation? Maybe that`s why so little Spanish, hard to come up with a KCTA slogan; any ideas? Korpus Cristi Tejas Abla? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1130, Jan 3 at 1550 UT, KLEY Wellington KS still dead-airing, for the record (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1200, Jan 3 at 0722 UT, the original ``Clear Channel`` station, WOAI San Antonio with C2CAM reincarnation nonsense has severe QRM from a gospel huxter in English, sometimes overriding WOAI. Hard to separate by nulling, since this has to be KFNW West Fargo ND, almost exactly opposite direxions from here. U4 50/13 kW, night pattern supposed to be totally northward; day pattern with lesser lobe to the south. At times, WOAI also gets battered by WRTO Chicago but not now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN. Re: ``13830, Jan 2 at 1527, S Asian? song, S9/+10, announcement and 1528 VR IS, 1530 ID ``Ye ---`` mentions Ethiopia. This is VR Amharic at 1530-1600 from SMG site, but no other language from it or anywhere is scheduled before 1530. Remarkable signal, about the same as 13820 Martí, another example of VR capability to serve far from its intended targets``

I bet what I heard at first 1527 was VR in Malayalam, frequency switching misaligned. Per WRTH 2022, that`s supposed to be on 7320 & 9595 both Tinang, USAGM Philippines, violating Separation of Church & State, at 1510-1530, so immediately preceding on program feed line (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Jan 3 at 0427, perfunctory and not digging to the usual depth, finds stronger ones on 612, 711, 882, 1053, 1107, 1215. 612 surely not the just-reactivated only MW from Jordan, 100 kW, but the 300 kW from Morocco, like 711 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 600, Jan 3 at 1552 UT, sports talk and ad in skywave remnant; daytime groundwave WMT IA is only a trace at best. ESPNs are KROD El Paso TX and KVNA Flagstaff AZ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 620, Jan 3 at 1543 UT, Spanish from KTNO The Metroplex TX unusually in daytime has CCI from algo making a fast SAH maybe 10 Hz. Skywave remnant, also showing up on many other frequencies. Two most likely/closest/westward sources are: KJOL Grand Junxion CO, and KTAR Phoenix AZ, both 5 kW ND. Will MWoffsets help? As usual, no: CO not measured, AZ/TX only 0.7 Hz apart. Next candidates, KMNS IA and WJDX MS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

was responsible for 2 M-class flares on 21 Dec, but only managed 1
C-class flare this reporting period. No Earth-directed CMEs were
observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit only
reached high levels on 27 Dec with a peak flux of 3,210 pfu observed
at 27/1325 UTC. The rest of the period, the electron flux was at
normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The
period began with a weak positive polarity coronal hole high speed
stream (CH HSS) that began after 27/0833 UTC. Total field reached a
maximum of 15 nT at 27/1357 UTC followed by a maximum solar wind
speed of 538 km/s at 28/1224 UTC. The geomagnetic field responded
with quiet to active levels on 27 Dec followed by quiet to unsettled
levels on 28 Dec. On 29 Dec, a late enhancement in total field
reaching 21 nT at 30/0036 UTC was followed by a brief increase in
solar wind speed to 515 km/s. The geomagnetic response was quiet to
unsettled on 29-30 Dec. Solar wind conditions began to wane on 31
Dec with only quiet levels observed. On 01-02 Dec another positive
polarity CH HSS was observed beginning at approximately 01/0115 UTC.
Total field increased to around 10 nT while the solar wind increased
to near 530 km/s by 01/0900 UTC. Solar wind speed remained enhanced
through the rest of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with
quiet to active levels on 01 Jan followed by quiet to unsettled
levels on 02 Jan.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
03 January - 29 January 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels through
15 Jan. There is a slight chance for M-class flares (R1-R2,
Minor-Moderate) on 16-29 Jan with the return of old Regions 2916 and
2918.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to reach high levels on 19-23 Jan due to recurrent CH HSS
influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on
03, 11-12, 15-18, 23-26, and 28-29 Jan and reach active levels on 16
Jan due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

“Il mio programma preferito è quello dedicato all’heavy metal”, mi aveva detto Ramirez.

Ti piacciono Madonna, i Pearl Jam o i Led Zeppelin? Pizza, bistecca o tofu?

“Vedete come siete tutti vicini l’uno all’altro? Ve ne state tranquilli, andate in giro, vi toccate l’un l’altro.

In totale, quasi 300.000 potenziali vittime.

54th anniversary of SLBC

On December 5, 2021 marked the 54th anniversary of the transformation of the former Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) into a Corporation. Accordingly, 54 years have passed since the official establishment of the radio station. The Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation was officially established on January 5, 1967 due to the difficulties encountered in functioning as a department and the need for a quality radio service. The then Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake officially opened the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation. Neville de Jayaweera was the first Chairman and Director General of the Corporation. After the adoption of the Republican Constitution in 1972, it was renamed as the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. From February 9, 1978, two posts of Chairman and Director General were created. Accordingly, Eman Kariyakarawana was appointed as the Chairman and Thevis Guruge as the Director General. Radio became a breakthrough in the history of world communication due to the social change it brought about.

Shortly after the beginning of world radio broadcasting, radio was introduced in Sri Lanka as well. Discussions had been held on the introduction of radio to Sri Lanka since about 1920.

The Ceylon Wireless Association was established in 1922. In 1923 the name was changed to Ceylon Amateur Radio Club. This required licenses for radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, a committee headed by Edward Harper, then Chief Engineer of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications in Sri Lanka, was appointed to look into the matter.

The committee looked into the following matters. However, the Government did not want to outsource radio broadcasting to the private sector. Therefore, the Government decided that radio in Sri Lanka should be started under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications.

It was against this background that Edward Harper began to develop a radio transmitter. Accordingly, on June, 27, 1924, the then Governor-General of Ceylon, Sir William Henry Manning, issued a message to the Ceylon Society of Engineers, marking the first radio broadcast in Ceylon.

First broadcast

The broadcast went down in history as the first radio broadcast in the British colonies and the first in Asia. Sri Lanka’s first radio station was established on December 16, 1925. Programs aired include Western music, weather reports, and trade information. During that time, radio licences began to be obtained.

Accordingly, in July 1925, 129 radio licenses were issued. Eventually, drama began to be broadcast on the radio. “Wireless Derma” was the first play to be aired. In 1927, sports information and news coverage began. In the same year, the first live Sinhala music program was aired.

Among the announcers who represented the early era of Ceylon Radio were Anderson, L.R. Wijemanne, D. M. Colomboge, D. T. L. Guruge, Karunaratne Abeysekera, and S. Nataraja.

English became the mother tongue of radio, which was created to meet the needs of the British rulers.

Until 1932, Harper was the chief engineer. By 1935 the number of radio licensees in Sri Lanka had increased to 3053. Sri Lankan radio-based programs aired on the British model followed the same pattern. Many of the programs broadcast on the radio were in English. Music programs broadcast on the radio were also in English. These programs were broadcast in Sinhala and Tamil medium long after the inception of the radio.

Western music discs were sourced from England and Tamil discs were obtained from India, while CDs containing Sinhala songs were sourced from companies such as Cargills and Millers. Among the singers who sang Sinhala songs in the early period were B.H. De Silva, Kokila Devi, Susila Jayasinghe, Rukmani Devi and S.A. Latif.

An eminent figure in Sri Lankan society, he has risen from humble beginnings to become the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. He is responsible for the revival of the SLBC to its current glory. Popular for his outspoken and open radio programs, Hudson Samarasinghe has transformed radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka.

He is a person who has worked closely with four Presidents of this country and has been an elected Member of Parliament. He comes with a multitude of experiences both as a veteran journalist and politician.

Hudson Samarasinghe joined the National Radio around 1969. He is a graduate of Vidyalankara University and was born on October 24, 1944 in Peradeniya. He joined the Corporation as a Radio Program Producer and was appointed to various posts in the Corporation.

In 1989 he was appointed Chairman and Director General of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. In 1991, he was elected to Parliament as a Member of Parliament from the Colombo District, representing the United National Party.

Chairmanship

After the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga took over three ministries in 2003, he was re-appointed as the Chairman of the National Air Force. In 2007, President Mahinda Rajapaksa re-appointed (for the third time) the Chairman of National Radio.

Hudson Samarasinghe was instrumental in compiling the new program of the National Radio. Hudson Samarasinghe is the founder of City FM, the first FM channel in the annals of Sri Lankan radio.

An accomplished communicator, Hudson Samarasinghe is a senior journalist with extensive experience in the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages. He has an understanding of Pali and Sanskrit languages. Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe is engaged in revenue generation, giving new hope to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in the year 2021. His Dasa Desin Hatha program have garnered the maximum response from the audience.

** OKLAHOMA. 350 MCW kHz, Jan 2 at 1523 UT, NO signal from RG, ND beacon at Will RoGers World Airport, OKC. This has been a very reliable constant `local`, more so than other Okies and Kansies: not my receiver as 515 PN Ponca City still in well; KS on 332, 395. Maybe due to extreme cold snap in OKC: WRWA low a sesquihour earlier was 12F. Still off at 1818 UT Jan 2 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 9700, Jan 2 at 0357, RHC is S7/S9 with undermodulated music // 6000 English service. ** U S A. Re 486 kHz, WI2XLQ, On the IRCA iog, Kraig W Krist says: ``Reception report, including brief recording of ID, emailed to Brain. Already received an email confirmation of reception. I actually heard transmission on 485.951 kHz. Brain admitted transmitter varies a bit. He wrote the following.

"The MOPA rig does drift a few hundred hertz every 4 to 6 hrs. If I’m in the shack and see the freq counter or waterfall display is >150Hz off from 486, I just give the “wavelength” control a fine trim to get it back on 486. It’s a 1921 design (wavelength back then, not frequency!) and I’m happy the thing stays as stable as it does given it’s just an LC tank with a UV-201A tube as the oscillator. The L is just cloth covered wire wrapped on a cardboard tube mounted on ceramic standoffs to the wooden chassis. "

I've created a QSL card for Brian to use when confirming reception of WI2XLQ. To see the WI2XLQ QSL for the December 31, 2021/January 1, 2022 transmission on 486 kHz, go to the USA section of http://www.kg4lac.com. Last several minutes turned over to the voice of DJ Roseanna of Radio Northern Europe International; checking her website http://rnei.org I find among other things some stats we don`t see elsewhere concerning WRMI, here concerning boresights of the NW and NE beams:

5850 KHz (2.378 Megawatts EIRP) AM – Targeting the USA and Canada, 7780 KHz (3.28 Megawatts EIRP) AM – Targeting North-East coast America and Northern Europe, Note: EIRP levels are calculated based on the ERP information from the transmission companies``

As for `Postcard Panorama`, this is the only known airtime, but I have the impression there may be one new show per month, repeated weekly.

Czech radio switches off medium wave as 2022 starts

Radio reception on medium wave (MW) and long wave (LW) has been history in many parts of Europe for years.

Now, in the Czech Republic, at least the public broadcaster will stop transmitting on MW and LW as the new year starts on Saturday.

The powerful transmitters on the frequencies 270, 639 and 954 kilohertz could also be received in large parts of Germany.

The reason given for the move was the widespread availability of terrestrial digital radio DAB+ and the high costs of broadcasting.

Those still listening using medium waves were to be persuaded to switch with a campaign. The radio station Cesky Rozhlas set up a telephone hotline to answer questions.

It was not known at first whether the transmitters would be retained or used for other purposes.

The antenna of the medium-wave transmitter Liblice B east of Prague is considered the highest structure in the Czech Republic, with a height of 355 metres.

Impuls, the most-listened to private radio station, wants to remain faithful to medium wave for the time being. It broadcasts its second programme, with pop and country music, on analogue transmission. (dpa-international.com/)
