WWV’s 25 MHz Signal Back on the Air
WWV silenced its 25 MHz signal in 1977, but it's back on the air "for old times' sake" — officially on an "experimental basis." Resurrecting the long-dormant
standard time outlet operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was Matt Deutch, N0RGT, the Lead Electrical Engineer at WWV. It all came about after Dean Lewis, W9WGV, lamented the loss of the 25 MHz signal in an e-mail to Deutch, who surprised him by subsequently putting the signal back on the air on April 4 for about 3-1/2 hours.

WWV began another 25 MHz test starting on April 7, and Deutch told ARRL that WWV-25 probably will remain on the air for the rest of the week. "So hopefully a few more people will hear it," he said.
Lewis said he'd told Deutch late last week that 10 meter propagation has been so good at this point in Cycle 24, and he uses the various WWV frequencies as propagation beacons on a daily basis.
"He responded that 'for old times' sake,' they'd put the [25 MHz] signal back on the air for a while. I assumed, of course, that he was kidding, and so I didn't check. Matt wasn't kidding!"
NIST said the 25 MHz broadcast consists of the normal WWV signal heard on all other WWV frequencies, at the same level of accuracy. Dear All, I'm writing to you inform you that on 14th April there will be a change of transponder and frequency for WRN English for Europe, which is currently on the Astra 2F satellite.
This channel will now be moving back to Eutelsat 28A and consequently, the service will have a different frequency for reception on non-Sky receivers (where tuning is carried out manually by frequency).
For Sky receivers the service will continue to appear on the same channel number and no action is required by the audience.
For homes that use a generic receiver (largely those located outside of the UK and Ireland), it will be necessary to re-tune from the existing frequency to the following:
Eutelsat 28A
D/L frequency: 11680.77 MHz
D/L polarity: Vertical
Symbol rate: 27.5 MSymb/sec
FEC: 2/3
DVBS
We will be dual illuminating the service until 22nd April to allow listeners time to gradually migrate across to the new frequency, and Sky will make the switch on this date.

** CHINA [non]. 9690, April 14 at 0355, CRI relay via SPAIN is all in Chinese, while 9790 via Cuba is not //, in English mixed with Chinese lesson at hourend. 9690 does default to English at 0358 to pronounce ``triple double-you dot chineseradio dot cee enn``.
Has Spain put on the wrong feed? Apparently not, but intentional A-14 replacement of 0300 English by Mandarin, as Aoki now shows both hours in Chinese at 02-04; while HFCC and EiBi still have English at 03-04 on 9690. Too bad, as this was CRI`s best signal left in English to North America --- Cuba 9790 still plenty strong, but better modulation was via Spain. Only the ChiCom get to register Habana relay frequencies with HFCC, as Arnie is just too anti-American, tsk2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 9490, April 14 at 0353, surprised to find wall-of-noise jamming here, as R. República via FRANCE ends at 0300 --- but I can almost hear something under the jamming, so could RR have been extended? However, not unusual at all for the DentroCuban Jamming Command to jam nothing, such as on 6030 at 0455, despite R. Martí`s Monday morning rest stop. 9490 accompanied by pulsing spurs plus/minus 10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA [and non]. 11840, April 14 at 0450, RHC still on here with `la Cultura en Cuba`, the OCOB = only Cuban on band; also poor on 9810. At 0455 the only other Spanish frequencies I find are 6060 and 5040; 6070 off already but still no CFRX to uncover. 6070 is now scheduled until 0400 only, and 9550 a new evening frequency is supposed to run at 21-05.
6000, I am monitoring from *0457 April 14 when RHC English is hit by a strong carrier suppressing audio somewhat and making a 4 Hz subaudible heterodyne: this means RHC has turned on another transmitter on the same frequency, QRMing itself! In less than a minute by 0458, Spanish audio comes up on the second transmitter to mix with English for another minute, but 0459 that stops, still SAH with two carriers, 0500 first carrier is off and RHC English continues on the second transmitter. (Anyhow, no more het or modulation from Brasil 5999.6). Typical very rough transition for RHC.
9830, April 14 at 1250, RHC under heavy RTTY QRM, and an echo apart from // 9850 and 9550 out of the other site. Arnie warns of a change coming to 9820 due to the RTTY he did not know about --- well, he should have, if he had turned on a radio before choosing new 9830, or noticed my frequent complaints about it, or rather about other broadcast stations clueless enough to try to broadcast on 9830, notably Turkey every summer for several years, 22-23 in English to North America. (BTW, the April 14 Aoki list shows 9830 also used by Turkey in Spanish from April 7 at 0100, with 9770 deleted, // 9870; something I had not yet noticed. 9870 is the one which should have been deleted, clashing with India!)
What about 9820 for RHC? There is something Asian there which will also QRM the weak RHC signal if it move. Aoki shows there are already 3 stations before 1300! AIR in Sinhala 250 kW via GOA; CNR1 in Chinese, 150 kW from Xianyang 594 site; and Voice of Beibu Bay Radio in Vietnamese/Chinese, 15 kW from Nanning 954 site. I am still hearing whichever 9820 Asian signal after 1300 April 14, but not after 1400. RHC sked shows 9830 in use at 11-15 UT, not just 11-13 as in Aoki, and I am still detecting it JBA at 1417 // others, still vs RTTY. You`re welcome, Arnie, for all my free advice.
11760 RHC is off at 1416 check April 14, with the only Cubans on band being 11860 and 12010. 11760 per RHC website is supposed to be on at 11-15 for Spanish (plus 1500-1530 Sunday Esperanto; 1900-2030 English & French; but not at all after that, when we have in fact heard it.)
9550 RHC is still on at 1417 April 14, // but much weaker than 15340, with usual Vietnamese CCI. RHC website claims 9550 is on only at 11-13 and new 21-05. In other words: SNAFU (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GREECE. 7475 // 9420, April 14 at 0342, HR is back in Greek with good/very good signals, but no 11645 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MALAYSIA. 9835, April 14 at 1258, poor-fair with Qur`an: sounds like a mezzo-soprano, or must it be a testicled tenor? Continues past 1300, but 1301 announcement in Malay(?); 1302 next cantor is a baritone; more Qur`an bits by different voices, with announcements, suspect one of those competitions, but no audience noise or applause, unseemly? Not // 11665 with other talk. 9835 Qur`aning still going at 1339 but fading to very poor. Is RTM Sarawak FM, relayed back to Borneo from peninsular Kajang near KL. ** CHINA [non]. 9690, April 14 at 0355, CRI relay via SPAIN is all in Chinese, while 9790 via Cuba is not //, in English mixed with Chinese lesson at hourend. 9690 does default to English at 0358 to pronounce ``triple double-you dot chineseradio dot cee enn``.
Has Spain put on the wrong feed? Apparently not, but intentional A-14 replacement of 0300 English by Mandarin, as Aoki now shows both hours in Chinese at 02-04; while HFCC and EiBi still have English at 03-04 on 9690. Too bad, as this was CRI`s best signal left in English to North America --- Cuba 9790 still plenty strong, but better modulation was via Spain. Only the ChiCom get to register Habana relay frequencies with HFCC, as Arnie is just too anti-American, tsk2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 9490, April 14 at 0353, surprised to find wall-of-noise jamming here, as R. República via FRANCE ends at 0300 --- but I can almost hear something under the jamming, so could RR have been extended? However, not unusual at all for the DentroCuban Jamming Command to jam nothing, such as on 6030 at 0455, despite R. Martí`s Monday morning rest stop. 9490 accompanied by pulsing spurs plus/minus 10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA [and non]. 11840, April 14 at 0450, RHC still on here with `la Cultura en Cuba`, the OCOB = only Cuban on band; also poor on 9810. At 0455 the only other Spanish frequencies I find are 6060 and 5040; 6070 off already but still no CFRX to uncover. 6070 is now scheduled until 0400 only, and 9550 a new evening frequency is supposed to run at 21-05.
6000, I am monitoring from *0457 April 14 when RHC English is hit by a strong carrier suppressing audio somewhat and making a 4 Hz subaudible heterodyne: this means RHC has turned on another transmitter on the same frequency, QRMing itself! In less than a minute by 0458, Spanish audio comes up on the second transmitter to mix with English for another minute, but 0459 that stops, still SAH with two carriers, 0500 first carrier is off and RHC English continues on the second transmitter. (Anyhow, no more het or modulation from Brasil 5999.6). Typical very rough transition for RHC.
9830, April 14 at 1250, RHC under heavy RTTY QRM, and an echo apart from // 9850 and 9550 out of the other site. Arnie warns of a change coming to 9820 due to the RTTY he did not know about --- well, he should have, if he had turned on a radio before choosing new 9830, or noticed my frequent complaints about it, or rather about other broadcast stations clueless enough to try to broadcast on 9830, notably Turkey every summer for several years, 22-23 in English to North America. (BTW, the April 14 Aoki list shows 9830 also used by Turkey in Spanish from April 7 at 0100, with 9770 deleted, // 9870; something I had not yet noticed. 9870 is the one which should have been deleted, clashing with India!)
What about 9820 for RHC? There is something Asian there which will also QRM the weak RHC signal if it move. Aoki shows there are already 3 stations before 1300! AIR in Sinhala 250 kW via GOA; CNR1 in Chinese, 150 kW from Xianyang 594 site; and Voice of Beibu Bay Radio in Vietnamese/Chinese, 15 kW from Nanning 954 site. I am still hearing whichever 9820 Asian signal after 1300 April 14, but not after 1400. RHC sked shows 9830 in use at 11-15 UT, not just 11-13 as in Aoki, and I am still detecting it JBA at 1417 // others, still vs RTTY. You`re welcome, Arnie, for all my free advice.
11760 RHC is off at 1416 check April 14, with the only Cubans on band being 11860 and 12010. 11760 per RHC website is supposed to be on at 11-15 for Spanish (plus 1500-1530 Sunday Esperanto; 1900-2030 English & French; but not at all after that, when we have in fact heard it.)
9550 RHC is still on at 1417 April 14, // but much weaker than 15340, with usual Vietnamese CCI. RHC website claims 9550 is on only at 11-13 and new 21-05. In other words: SNAFU (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [non]. 1520, April 13 at 1201 UT, I catch partial ID again for wrong station ``KGBC, Galveston-Houston`` which is 1540 also relaying China Radio International (1540 here is likely to be blocked by The Metroplex station, but this 1520 one manages to overcome KOKC at least briefly, which is in CBS News); then ``The Hourly News``, but by the CRI native announcer. On 1520 it`s really KYND, Cypress TX. Shawn Fahrer found the corporate source for all this following my yesterday`s log, obviously a ChiCom subsidiary allowed in the US; can you imagine such a reciprocal arrangement for USG broadcasts within China? Why don`t we insist on it?

I also logged 11910, April 11 at 1253 and 1326 with heavy flutter, but overlooked reporting it then. Then I could compare it to 17715 and 21610 direct and found 11910 running a few words behind them (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TURKEY. 11835, April 12 at 1803, no news on the hour, but instead YL with DX tips in German! Good signal with flutter. At first not sure whence. Items include schedules from Japan, Iran, Spain in English, Russia, and about Luxembourg ex-6090; 1812 mentions Türkisch, 1813 into Turkish music. Yes, the VOT German service at 1730-1825, 500 kW, 310 degrees from Emirler, and thus also USward. I suspect this reception is anomalous, following some propagation disturbance.

After some slow loading, you can advance the playback 10 minutes into the hour file to confirm it`s Letterbox: first one from David Crystal in Israel taking TRT to task for allowing the B13 frequency for English at 1730 to be blocked by something else. (Looking at Aoki, that would have been 11680, also with KCBS domestic service from North Korea until 1800.) Host also mentions that Mr Ozman (sp?), head of English service, is retiring this week.
I notice that the first quarter program schedule in English still shows Letterbox on Wednesdays rather than alternating with DX Corner on Saturdays which started this year. Usa-Russia, la Guerra fredda della radio
Torna la guerra fredda tra la Russia e gli Stati Uniti. E coinvolge anche i media. L'ultimo missile su questo fronte ha colpito la Voice of America.
Dopo avere già ridotto nel 2006 la possibilità di ritrasmettere i propri programmi alla Voice of America in Russia, il governo di Mosca ha deciso di non rinnovare il contratto di collaborazione tra la Rossiya Segodnya, l'associazione dei media statali russi, e il Bbg, Broadcasting Board of Governors, che per il governo americano sovrintende alle trasmissioni per l'estero. Di conseguenza è stata chiusa l'emittente in onde medie, 810 kHz, che ritrasmetteva il segnale della Voa per la regione di Mosca.
A Marzo la battaglia dei media radiofonici aveva coinvolto l'Ucraina. Kiev aveva bloccato le trasmissioni in territorio ucraino di quattro canali radio russi. Mosca aveva risposto mandandone in onda un paio grazie a dei trasmettitori in onde medie piuttosto potenti presenti vicino al confine ucraino. Inoltre in Crimea erano stati chiusi i canali televisivi ucraini.
Tutto questo sta mettendo in difficoltà gli Stati Uniti, che tramite il Bbg avevano deciso di ridurre le trasmissioni della Voa in onde corte nelle lingue slave e verso l'Europa orientale. Oltre a tagliare ulteriormente i fondi a Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, storica "testata" radiofonica protagonista della vera Guerra fredda.
L'obiettivo strategico per le radio americane era stato individuato nel fronte asiatico e africano. Ora invece a Washington ci si interroga se ci sia stata un po' troppa fretta e superficialità nei tagli. E troppa fiducia per i new media. Appare infatti ormai evidente, come per prima ha insegnato la Cina, che Internet è controllabile, manipolabile e censurabile. E i social network possono essere facilmente oscurabili, come si è visto in Turchia dove Erdogan ha bloccato per un po' Facebook e Twitter.
Non solo, anche le trasmissioni radio e tv satellitari possono essere silenziate. L'Iran riuscì ad accecare il satellite che ritrasmetteva alcuni canali occidentali sparandogli contro dei segnali radio molto potenti. Ecco quindi che tornano di nuovo utili le onde medie e quelle corte ,in particolare. Certo le trasmissioni possono essere interferite, ma non è poi così difficile trovare il modo di eludere i disturbi spostandosi di frequenza e qualche trucco. Imparato in tanti anni di Guerra fredda e conflitto ideologico con Cuba e la Cina.
E' la rivincita delle onde corte. Nell'era di Internet lo zio Sam, il re delle nuove tecnologie, ha ancora bisogno della radio. Quella inventata da Guglielmo Marconi. Quella capace di trasmettere parole e idee a lunga distanza. Certo le trasmissioni possono essere interferite, ma non è poi così difficile trovare il modo di eludere i disturbi spostandosi di frequenza e qualche trucco. (Giampiero Bernardini)

Tutto questo sta mettendo in difficoltà gli Stati Uniti, che tramite il Bbg avevano deciso di ridurre le trasmissioni della Voa in onde corte nelle lingue slave e verso l'Europa orientale. Oltre a tagliare ulteriormente i fondi a Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, storica "testata" radiofonica protagonista della vera Guerra fredda.
L'obiettivo strategico per le radio americane era stato individuato nel fronte asiatico e africano. Ora invece a Washington ci si interroga se ci sia stata un po' troppa fretta e superficialità nei tagli. E troppa fiducia per i new media. Appare infatti ormai evidente, come per prima ha insegnato la Cina, che Internet è controllabile, manipolabile e censurabile. E i social network possono essere facilmente oscurabili, come si è visto in Turchia dove Erdogan ha bloccato per un po' Facebook e Twitter.
Non solo, anche le trasmissioni radio e tv satellitari possono essere silenziate. L'Iran riuscì ad accecare il satellite che ritrasmetteva alcuni canali occidentali sparandogli contro dei segnali radio molto potenti. Ecco quindi che tornano di nuovo utili le onde medie e quelle corte ,in particolare. Certo le trasmissioni possono essere interferite, ma non è poi così difficile trovare il modo di eludere i disturbi spostandosi di frequenza e qualche trucco. Imparato in tanti anni di Guerra fredda e conflitto ideologico con Cuba e la Cina.
E' la rivincita delle onde corte. Nell'era di Internet lo zio Sam, il re delle nuove tecnologie, ha ancora bisogno della radio. Quella inventata da Guglielmo Marconi. Quella capace di trasmettere parole e idee a lunga distanza. Certo le trasmissioni possono essere interferite, ma non è poi così difficile trovare il modo di eludere i disturbi spostandosi di frequenza e qualche trucco. (Giampiero Bernardini)

Discussing cyclone-related problems with callers to 1-300-801-222, and its ``phugoid`` motion, i.e. wandering back and forth, normally applied to aircraft. Some flights to Cai[r]ns have been diverted or canceled; someone reports a live (presumably) power line down on a road which hasn`t been dealt with, so her neighbors are out warning people away from it. 0538 ID as ``ABC Far North``, more calls; 0600 newscast mentions 120 kph winds, 100 ml of rain. From which studio does this originate??
Like previous cyclone-hits to Queensland, RA has dedicated a SW transmitter and 30-degree antenna at Shepparton to relaying local services back to the area, due to [real or expected?] outages of ABC FM/AM transmitters. Per Ivo Ivanov, 15240 is scheduled 22-09 UT, and 6150 at 09-22, which others first heard on April 11.

This follows Jorge Freitas forwarding my previous report about this to EBC. So the Canadians on 6160 are again unblocked, and no pulsing QRM to RHC 6165. Hard to catch locations cited, but winds are in knots, seas are in feet and visibilities are in miles (who cares about ceilings?). 0147 goes into forecasts from Saturday into Monday, back to conditions as of 1930 local time; partial ID mentions ``Coast Guard Radio Station, Bay of Fundy``. It can ``ride the MUF`` on a good night, but on a bad one it will be above it, inaudible. It almost seems like WBCQ and BBC are finally coördinating, with BBC Somali daily at 1400-1500 except Saturday at 1300-1400 instead, per Aoki, not HFCC --- Saturday being the only day `BCQ comes on this early due to the live Sabbath service at TOM Tabernacle off I-95. But it`s probably only coincidental, since BBC shuttered Seychelles, and now relies on the slopperators at SENTECH who should have turned this off before 1400.

BTW, on the DX-398 I am hearing a weak mixture of 7385 and 5085 WTWW BS on 2300 kHz, which is the difference between the two, obviously a receiver-produced image. I get lots more of these especially on 120m; the PL-880 is even worse with ghosts on other bands if there is any overload from an external antenna (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

At 1300 UT three similar announcements including ``programming provided by G&E [GNE?] Studios``, comments to 1-877-913-xx89, or a gmail address. 1301 ID for KGBC, and into non-Chinese news, but 1309 recheck, now it`s the well-known voice of the CRI native announcer talking about missing plane. 1520 is not KGBC, which is 1540 Galveston, but its sister station KYND Cypress TX, both of which relay CRI as both are considered necessary to cover most of the Houston metro area --- and conveniently second-adjacent. NRC AM Log 2013 shows KYND has a CP to increase day power from 3 to 25 kW and it sure sounds like this in now accomplished.
Yes: FCC AM Query now shows licensed for 25 kW day, 18 kW critical hours, nothing about a CP any more.

It almost seems like WBCQ and BBC are finally coördinating, with BBC Somali daily at 1400-1500 except Saturday at 1300-1400 instead, per Aoki, not HFCC --- Saturday being the only day `BCQ comes on this early due to the live Sabbath service at TOM Tabernacle off I-95. But it`s probably only coincidental, since BBC shuttered Seychelles, and now relies on the slopperators at SENTECH who should have turned this off before 1400.

1520 is not KGBC, which is 1540 Galveston, but its sister station KYND Cypress TX, both of which relay CRI as both are considered necessary to cover most of the Houston metro area --- and conveniently second-adjacent. NRC AM Log 2013 shows KYND has a CP to increase day power from 3 to 25 kW and it sure sounds like this in now accomplished.
Yes: FCC AM Query now shows licensed for 25 kW day, 18 kW critical hours, nothing about a CP any more.
