** CHINA [non]. 5990, Dec 24 at 2337, CRI via CUBA is playing ``Silent Night`` in Chinese by women`s choir with organ and chime accompaniment, very nice rendition, so I hasten to the much better-modulated relay via CANADA on 6040. Announceress then explains that Xmas is observed more and more in China than it was two decades ago, but Chinese people are able to ``discard all the religious connotations and go right to the fun part``. Well put! Considering it the western equivalent of the Chinese new year/spring festival celebrations. Next is ``Carol of the Bells`` except she calls it ``Xmas Bells``, originally Ukrainian.

A 2010 survey found that there are 23 megaChristians in China, and 5.7 megaCatholix (not stated whether counted separately or as part of the Christian total). Next: ``Sleigh Ride``, allegedly the No. 1 Xmas tune around the world. Can we trust these stats coming from the ChiCom? 2347 ``Jingle Bells`` except the chorus sings the English (?) words ``Ding-Ding-Dong`` instead. Says it was originally composed for Thanksgiving, not Xmas. Finally, the ``Hosanna in the Highest`` carol, did not catch what she called it. Program outro as `China Horizons` featuring a Chinese women`s singing group, whose name I did not catch either, but they were excellent, and retrieving this program would be worthwhile if they ever include it at

** CROATIA [non]. 7375, Dec 25 at 0019, Croatian hymn with YL narration talk-over, maybe credits; 0022 cut to ID jingle for Croatian Radio program I, then different carol by soprano with electronic music accompaniment, more unfamiliar Xmas music with a beat; 0028 a `Kyrie Eleison` version. Voice of Croatia relay via GERMANY is a great source of mostly-music all evening until 0600*, usually with an outstanding signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 5954.2, Dec 24 at 2356 I an hearing a tell-tale het between this weak signal and something weaker on 5955, hinting that the ELCOR transmitter in Costa Rica is back. Yes! At 2357 I can barely make out the R. República theme before it cuts off at 2357:40*. Then there is still a het, now between 5952+, no doubt Bolivia, and whatever is on 5955 (Iran in Chinese? CNR in Mongolian?). Maybe República has been there all along but on a much reduced schedule. Why should they keep running this pipsqueak anyway on a Saturday night when they are about to come up on a big Sackville transmitter? Anyhow, there was NO Cuban jamming on 5955, and when I listen after 0600, 5955 has also been blessedly free of the radio war allowing RNW to be clear.

9490, from 2358 I am awaiting R. República via RMI via Sackville, which finally cuts on air a few sex before 0000 UT Dec 25, plays short instrumental version of Cuban NA (much like that heard on RHC), then the R. República theme and sign-on but not mentioning any times or frequencies. 0001 starts `Recuento Semanal` week-in-review program. Noise jamming has started, but still an hour later, RR/SAC is well atop it here; scheduled 00-03 UT Sundays and Mondays only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 7475, Dec 25 at 0030, VOG with YL in Greek mentioning ``olive oil``. No Xmas music here --- that would be unorthodox (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, Dec 25 at 0008, ever since someone reported hearing cuckoos on R. Verdad, I have wanted to too, and now I have! As soon as I tune in, then ID (Glenn Hauser,, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9425, Dec 24 at 2230-2235 AIR news in English, good with flutter on National Channel, 2235 into Hindi. Which goes first alternates from hour to hour; at 2130 it was Hindi, then English. This cast mentioned Christmas being celebrated in India by the Christian minority (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Dec 24 around 2130 UT we went back to the 89.5 singing-Xmas-trees to have a look at them in the daytime and take a few more photos of the site, in the 3500 block of West Oak in Enid. It`s obviously a temporary installation, anchored by sand/trash bags. Nothing I could recognize as an FM transmitting antenna. No signs reveal who is sponsoring this, other than the Grand signs about the well, and we have seen no local publicity about it. Does this layout look familiar, out of the box, perhaps duplicated elsewhere? We could detect it modulating again at 0011 UT Dec 25, at home on the YB-400, not the DX-398, aside heavy 89.7 signal from a real House station.

** U S A. Further to discussion of KJES off-frequency: checking their third outlet, 7555 scheduled at 0200-0330, Dec 25 at 0206, cannot detect it at all. 7 MHz signals are generally weakening, but WBCQ is still audible on 7490-.

On 11714.8: KJES lux out by not having anything on 11715.0 to beat against for most of their maximum 14-17 UT span: Vatican does not start until 1650 (BTW, Aoki still lists as `B-11` KJES` summer timing of 13-16 UT). (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5109.75-USB, Dec 25 at 0004, `Radio TimTron Worldwide` is starting live for two hours on WBCQ Area 51, 0007 ``Xmas at Ground Zero``, which I think long predates 9/11. That`s as closely as I can measure the nominal 5110 frequency, which if correct is beyond FCC tolerance which would be up to 76.65 Hz above or below 5,110,000 Hz.

7490-, Dec 25 at 0206 when I am checking for KJES on 7555, I step thru the 7 MHz channels with BFO, and note that WBCQ is slightly low compared to its neighbors, but within tolerance, during `I Sing Radio`, hmmm, not `Icing` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

WORLD OF RADIO 1596 monitoring: unless you can get WRMI 9955 on Sunday at 0900, 1630 or 1830, final chance to hear this week`s edition on SW should be 0500 UT Sunday Dec 25 on WTWW 5755, unless holiday pre-empted. As of 0330 UT Sunday, Area 51 had not yet posted this weekend`s schedule at http://www.worldmicroscope.com when WOR might appear UT Monday at 0330v on 5110v-CUSB WBCQ (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 7395, Dec 25 at 0031, strange mixture of `Amazing Grace` and `Glory to God in the Highest` from Messiah. At first they seemed to alternate and I was wondering if someone had axually tried to combine the two on one poor signal! But then the A.G. one went to announcement while Messiah continued on the other. Aoki shows Christians vs Christians:

Bible Voice, 250 kW, 90 degrees via Wertachtal, GERMANY at 0030-0100 in English Fri/Sat/Sun, Hindi other days; and, YFR, 500 kW, 215 degrees from Montsinéry, GUIANA FRENCH, at 0000-0100 in English, so both are far off-target from here and from each other (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN [non]. 15470, Dec 24 at 2113, VG S9+25 signal with Xmas mass, 2116 Italian announcement mentions Vatican, more mass. This is a new frequency, or rather special one where nothing is normally heard or scheduled. 2215 recheck, still going in Spanish, hymn about Noel. I Never hear a specific Vatican Radio ID, but sure sounds like them, with Xmas eve special broadcast, and has to be a relay with reception like this, since from Europe on 19m, Spain manages only a weak 15110 signal, which had been VG in the autumn. Likely Sackville or Bonaire, VR relay sites used later in the evening.

At 2220 compared to Poland via Sackville on 15260, not quite as strong as 15470, with its own non-// usual Saturday night mass in Polish. Now the SSOB is 15440 WYFR, with 15470 the second SSOB. 15470 sounds like PBXVI speaking and trying to sing, but with YL commentary in Spanish. WEWN Spanish service relays Vatican around 2200, so I check 13830 // 12050 --- those are running 13 seconds ahead of 15470, so apparently live Xmas Eve service which somehow gets into and out of Birmingham/Vandiver first.

At 2307 the mass is over, and English programming is in progress, interviewing someone from Friends of the Holy Land, about helping out the few Christians left in Bethlehem. 2312 introduces `our final program today`, Xmas play ``No Cribs for a Bed``.

I check the handy Broadcasts in English schedule booklet for B-11 from the British DX Club, which is excellent and comprehensive, so I don`t have to turn on a computer,

and no, there is nothing on 15470 before or after 2300. It does however show Vatican at 2300-2345 daily to NAm direct in DRM on 7370 --- so I bet VR decided they would like to have a significant audience for a change on this special occasion by adding another frequency in AM. But it would be nice if they had publicized it.

Expecting this to last until 2345 as well, I don`t check again until 2330, by when the broadcast has already stopped, open carrier until 2331*. So was it Bonaire or Sackville? Assuming Bonaire still has three funxional transmitters, is one available at least from 2100 to 2330? Searching HFCC (the individual RNW schedules are insufficient), we find 2100-2127 on 13700, 17605; 2200-2227 on 15315 and 15540 --- plus NHK relay 2200-2400 on 17605. Unfortunately I did not confirm whether the latter was still on the air this date, but why not? That makes it more likely Sackville, which has more transmitters, but hardly full usage with all the RCI cutbacks.

710, Dec 23 at 0655 UT, choral anthem is underway; 0657 fanfare and then super-patriotic speech about the flag, but fading by 0700. It had been well audible in null of Cuba, probably from SW/WSW direxion, likely XEDP in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, a regular around sunrise too, but there are two other MST stations in Sinaloa and Sonora, per new IRCA Mexican Log.

850, Dec 23 at 0656 UT, multiverse choral NA past 0658, 0701 finally ID as 5 kW from Chihuahua, i.e. XEM. Was easy to null attenuated KOA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SYRIA [non]. 9330, Dec 22 at 2201 I check to hear whether R. Damascus is audible, right after that BBC documentary about Syria, see UK. Of course not! Even tho WBCQ has lost Rod Hembree`s modulation again, only open carrier and hum. Syria supposedly has English at 21-22, Spanish at 22-23 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U A E. 6175, on the shortest day of the year, Dec 22 at the early hour of 2042 UT I am checking whether anything is propagating on 49m besides CFRX. Yes, some weak German talk and music here, which turns out to be: Voice of Vietnam via UAE, 2030-2130, 250 kW, 315 degrees toward W Europe and thus also USward (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [and non]. 9410, Dec 22 at 2132, BBCWS with `Tales from the Arab Spring`. I have run across this a few times before in the programmiddle as I am aroundtuning, but this time I can listen to the whole thing from the start. This episode is about Syria, also comparing it to Libya, an excellent news documentary by Jeremy Bowen. It`s fruitless to try to find all the times for anyprogram on all the needlessly divergent BBCWS streams, but I highly recommend it for retrieving online. Sufficient reception on 9410 at this time I assumed was Ascension or UK, but listed as due west from Seychelles, which is usually insufficient here.

11830, Dec 23 at 1509, BBCWS fairly audible with another report on Syria. This is 15-17, 300 kW, 105 degrees from Woofferton (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Artie Bigley has found and forwarded an FCC NOV (notice of violation) dated Dec 14, 2011, sent to KJES, charging them with operating on 11714.803 kHz, which at 197 Hz off is 21 Hz beyond the .0015 % tolerance allowed, i.e. plus/minus 176 Hz from 11715.000!

KJES has been off-frequency for years, and the FCC has finally caught them. FCC hardly ever cites US SWBC stations for anything, e.g. WWCR spurring over half the 19m band, WEWN with its eternal spurs at 9/18/27 kHz on each side.

Yet, even a tolerance of 176 Hz is intolerable in international SW broadcasting, far too lax, where properly-operated stations maintain a tolerance of say 15-20 Hz max, often much closer, regardless of how high the frequency, i.e. not causing audible heterodynes.

James T. Lyon at FCC San Diego gave Our Lady`s Youth Center in Vado NM 20 days to respond with an explanation of each violation and what they are doing to correct them. At this point they are not facing a fine, apparently. So have they been on the air since then, on-frequency or off-? As in DXLD 11-50:

Dec 3 at 1432-1437, Ken Zichi in Michigan had them on 11715.0, ``on channel for a change``

Dec 10 at 1947 I had them on 15385.4 [where there is a 231 Hz tolerance! far too much]

Dec 13 at 1551, Terry Krueger in Florida had KJES on 11714.78v, even further off than in their citation.

Those were all before the date of the NOV. One later report from Zacharias Liangas, Greece: Dec 17 at 1405 on 11714.8.

Now I`m looking for KJES: Dec 22 at 2028, nothing around 15385. Dec 23 at 1407 and 1520, nothing around 11715. Of course, their operation has long been sporadic, and at times we may be in the skip zone. The nominal current schedule per WRTH 2012 is daily, but irregular:

1900-2100 15385

** U S A. 5890, Dec 23 at 0647, no signal detectable from WWCR`s Brother Scare service which is supposed be on at 06-12; 5935 PMS was weak but audible // 6090 Anguilla a reverb apart, while nearby 5755 WTWW maintained a fair signal.

15825, Dec 23 at 1403, for the third day in a row, WWCR-1 is on correct frequency instead of 7465 all morning 72 hours ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6875, Dec 23 at 0649 check, WYFR is still broadcasting wrong language German in RTI relay instead of Spanish, during Chinese language lesson. I wonder if WYFR will ever get back in whack before Dan Elyea retires at yearend? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1596 monitoring: First SW broadcast confirmed Thursday Dec 22 at 2200 on WTWW 9479; second at 2230 on WBCQ 7490, back to usual time instead of 2200 last week, when Amos `n` Andy aired as scheduled this week.

Also confirmed after 0431 UT Friday Dec 23 on WWRB 3195, but no signal on 5050. This time there was a longer respectful silence of about 2 minutes after the SC preacher, amen and amen. Apparently Dave has finally turned off the // transmitter on 5050, but further chex needed other nights before 0500. Propagation was certainly OK, with other Tennesseans on 4840, 5755 very good. Next WOR airing at 0600 UT Friday on WRMI: no signal detectable on 9955, no jamming either; yet bigsigs from Eurasia on 31m, such as RNW via Pridnestrovye on 9895, Turkey on 9700.

Further times when WRMI is supposed to be on 9955: Saturday 0900, 1600, 1830, Sunday 0900, 1630, 1830. On WTWW: UT Sunday 0500 on 5755. On WBCQ Area 51 (maybe, check schedule): UT Monday 0330v on 5110v-CUSB. Also on WRN via SiriusXM 120: Sat & Sun 1830, Sun 0930 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ANTARCTICA. 15476, still zilch from LRA36 on the one day of the week it used to be active, Thursday Dec 22 at 1335. How about someone contacting Esperanza on what the prospects are for ever reactivating? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BHUTAN [and non]. 6035, Dec 22 at 1312, with BFO I can tell there are two very weak carriers on slightly different frequencies, so must be BBS and Yunnan PBS; others are reporting Bhutan is 40-50 Hz on the high side. If I were to keep monitoring this carefully for the next two hours, I might detect when one of them goes off, and by matching that to reports from those who can really hear Bhutan, clinch a catch without hearing any modulation.

Nothing at all detectable on 5030, which is still testing sporadically. Ron Howard in California was hearing it during this period. Alokesh Gupta, Cumbre DX, hears from BBS that when the 5030 transmitter is ready for regular service in January with a second program, they may put it on a good clean frequency --- but this one seems good enough to me (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BULGARIA. 15600, Dec 22 at 1335, strong open carrier, R. Bulgaria kilowasting kilowatts, long before its 1400 Bulgarian broadcast; with a ringing sound, perhaps beating against the WEWN 15610 spur on 15601 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 1610, Dec 22 at 0050 UT on the caradio I am surprised to hear something in Spanish here vs the IBOC noise from KATZ-1600. Unfortunately, I am in no position to DF it. Woman speaking, seems to be giving local addresses, thought I heard Monterrey mentioned, then a few seconds of ``Jingle Bells Rock``, mentions 8 de la noche. I was hoping for XEUACH, R. Chapingo, but it`s not yet 7 pm there and here, if that was a partial before-the-hour timecheck. So was it from EST zone? That would be CHHA Toronto, Radio Voces Latinas, which is listed as Spanish + ethnic format. It`s more likely to be heard anyway, about same distance but much greater power, altho also a rarity here. Then it lost out to the IBOC.

The have quite a lineup of languages, UT: 0100 English, 0200 Portuguese, 0300 Tagalog, 0400 Italian, 0500+ Spanish. Also in the afternoons at 19-21 UT M-F there are 20 half-hour shows each named for a different Ibero-American country, and they do webcast via http://www.voceslatinas.ca (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6160, Dec 22 at 1408, CKZU Vancouver with CBC news about  sexual harassment against a woman firefighter in Richmond BC, new poet laureate from Nelson BC; 1410 into `Early Edition`, more local news, weather and 12>6 timecheck. Fair signal attaining R5 tnx to lack of QRM even from CKZN at this hour. I expect it`s pure luck, as major broadcasters don`t pay any attention to this unregistered 500-watt pipsqueak, even RCI, listed in HFCC via Korea during this hour, but unheard, and unlisted in Aoki, EiBi and RCI`s own website schedule. HFCC shows nothing else but Murmansk (a.k.a. Arkhangelsk, a.k.a. Monchegorsk) on 6160 between 0945 and 1800, and the Brazilians can be ignored in the daytime. Anomalies about the 6160 Canadians: Aoki claims CKZU is off the air on Sundays, surely not true. EiBi claims both CKZU and CKZN are off the air overnight, but surely they are both still 24 hours (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 5965, Dec 22 at 1355, Korean talk and then usual end-of-hour CRI music fill, 1400 reopening another hour of Korean after Chinese ID. Het from perpetually off-frequency Malaysia was JBA, weaker than usual. HFCC shows CRI Korean runs 11-15, 500 kW, 73 degrees from Xi`an. VOR Vladivostok also registered 10-14 westward on 5965, no sign of it, presumably yet another wooden one, lest there be a big collision in the area (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6050, Dec 22 at 0659, Spanish music here from RHC not // English closing on 6010 and 6060, then to open carrier on 6050 at 0700. Quickly checked the fourth ``English`` frequency, 6125, and it was still playing the same music in Spanish until it cut off at 0703* by when 6050 was also off the air. Apparently, RHC had just cut half of its English frequencies to Spanish feed just before closing down, typical slipshod operation (= slopperation).

13730-13770, Dec 22 at 1339, DentroCuban Jamming Command centered on 13750 against our Voice of America in Spanish, not even a Cuban service, but Cuba doesn`t want anyone in Latin America to hear it, is bleeding out this far (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

BTW, several ignorant American journalists keep mispronouncing his name, e.g. Charlie Rose, unaware that the c in Czech represents a ts sound, not a k. The least they could do in his honor would be to pronounce his name correctly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Perchè non possiamo non dirci analogici

Chiedo scusa a Benedetto Croce per averlo cosi' malamente citato nell'intitolare questo articolo, ma forse riuscira' meglio l'ispirazione di un grande filosofo, piu' di quella di un eventuale tecnico, a guidare la stesura del testo.

Da piu' parti si sente dire che il futuro della Radio e' digitale, ma coloro che vedevano la luce nei primi anni del DAB oggi hanno in gran parte gia' dato l'esame di maturita', mentre il DAB e' ancora allo stato embrionale. Gestazione lunga? No: aborto rinviato... per troppo tempo. Proprio nel mondo tecnologico digitale, se una tecnologia non attecchisce significativamente entro il primo anno o due dalla sua presentazione sul mercato, la si dichiara morta e si passa ad altro. Altri settori tradizionali della tecnologia ammettono tempi piu' lunghi, ma la tecnologia digitale corre assai veloce e non puo' permettersi di perdere tempo e denari nell'ostinarsi a proporre al mercato qualcosa che non funziona. E non funziona non solo e non soltanto in termini prettamente tecnici, ma anche e soprattutto in termini "filosofici": allontanare la Radio dalla sua natura di mezzo per l'ascolto universale, ad accesso libero, pratico ed economico, equivale ad ucciderla.

Non serve che ci dilunghiamo sullo stato della radiofonia in Italia piu' ancora che altrove. La concessionaria pubblica soffre di una crisi di identita' dalle molteplici origini che la porta a proporre un'offerta che nel migliore dei casi sa di vecchio o di goffa imitazione di modelli piu' marcatamente commerciali, le radio libere non esistono sostanzialmente piu' e l'offerta in FM consiste in larga parte di playlist musicali piu' o meno tematiche che riempiono gli spazi lasciati/concessi dai grandi network commerciali. Della crisi esistenziale della radiofonia RAI si constatano gli effetti in modo particolare nelle onde medie e corte, praticamente abbandonate in quanto considerate a torto obsolete ed energivore. Abbandonate le onde medie e corte, abbandonata l'unica radiofonia dal respiro internazionale che l'ente di Stato poteva avere.

Delle webradio non voglio nemmeno parlare, perche' qui voglio parlare di Radio e quelle non sono radio. Un giorno, qualcuno si accorgera' che per servire con una webradio lo stesso bacino di utenza potenziale ottimamente servito da un trasmettitore da 5 kW in onde medie bisogna consumare una potenza multipla di 5 e allora, forse, ci sara' qualche ripensamento. Ma torniamo alla radiofonia digitale e chiediamoci: perche' dopo 10 anni e piu' essa e' ancora molto di la' da venire? Io ritengo che la risposta sia filosoficamente semplice: perche' complicare e' contro natura.

 

La natura tende al semplice, all'equilibrio. La radiofonia digitale e' complicata da realizzare tecnicamente, il suo funzionamento e' insoddisfacente e la sua miglior caratteristica (il suono di qualita' "digitale") in sostanza non interessa. E non interessa a tal punto che gli stessi broadcaster hanno chiaramente issato bandiera bianca sul tema specifico conferendo alla qualita' sonora dei programmi un livello che nel migliore dei casi letteralmente si vergogna di fronte ad una tranquilla FM... e neanche stereo. L'imposizione della radiofonia digitale sul mercato, se lo si vuole a tutti i costi, non puo' che avvenire in virtu' di atti forzosi, imposti per Legge, come e' avvenuto per la TV. Alla vecchia, cara, TV analogica non mancava nulla per adempiere egregiamente al suo compito: tutti (e senza dover cambiare forzatamente apparecchio o ingombrarsi la vita con un altro scatolotto da collegare e un altro telecomando da perdere in giro per casa) potevano guardarsi i soliti 6 o 7 canali nazionali e qualche tv locale, oltre alla pay-tv per chi poteva permettersela. Un centinaio di canali dove si cucina tutto il giorno, si dipingono pareti, si addestrano cani o si pescano carpe non significa ampliare l'offerta ne' aumentare il pluralismo. E' solo spreco di banda e di corrente. Detto per inciso, si vedeva pure meglio, ma lasciamo perdere... ad una qualita' di vita mediocremente scarsa ci siamo ormai assuefatti e non solo riguardo alla TV. La TV ha una forza mediatica di ordini di grandezza superiori a quella della Radio. Puo' sopravvivere a certe forzature.

La Radio no. Se si facesse una ipotetica transizione al digitale negli stessi termini nei quali si e' fatta per la TV, la gente non correrebbe a comprare ricevitori DAB (che peraltro non troverebbe sugli scaffali). Semplicemente, spegnerebbe la radio e guarderebbe, semmai possibile, ancor di piu' la TV.

Io penso che, se la radiofonia digitale avesse avuto qualche chance di successo, oggi sarebbe una realta' consolidata. Se non ha sfondato fino ad oggi, non sfondera' mai piu' e sarebbe opportuno smettere di sprecarci dei soldi in inutili e sterili sperimentazioni. Credo piuttosto che andrebbe ritrovato e rinnovato il vero spirito della radiofonia, quello spirito che vede nella liberta' di manifestazione del pensiero, nell'universalita' e nella semplicita' di accesso al mezzo radiofonico le sue linee guida. Le Onde Medie, questo bellissimo giardino abbandonato dai suoi distratti proprietari, oltretutto decaduti, devono essere riscoperte e valorizzate grazie a nuovi operatori, nuovi entusiasmi e nuove opportunita' di impresa.

Lo Stato, per cortesia, se non di agevolare, cerchi quantomeno di non ostacolare questo moto di rinnovamento che viene dal basso, da giovani ed intraprendenti operatori che non chiedono niente a nessuno, se non di poter inseguire e realizzare con serenita' e sicurezza il loro sogno imprenditoriale. Sogno dal quale non pensano certo di trarre i milioni facili  (in questi ultimi tempi meno che mai...), ma di trarre soprattutto soddisfazione per aver realizzato qualcosa di buono e di utile per la societa'.

Il tutto, rigorosamente... analogico.

Broadcasting in Sri Lanka completes its 86th year today. British Governor in Ceylon Sir Hue Clifford inaugurated Ceylon Broadcasting Service on the 16th December 1925. It was later established as a new department titled "Radio Ceylon" in 1st of October 1949. It was transformed into Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation on the 5th of January 1967. Late Mr. Nevil De Jayaweera was the first Chairman and the Director General of the SLBC. The Corporation operates three Sinhala channels, two Tamil channels, one English channel, Vidula a broadcasting service for children and seven regional services at present. The SLBC also operates all Asia service in Hindi, Tamil and English languages as well. The SLBC possess the leading digital archives and library in the Asian region.

** ALBANIA. 7420, Dec 21 at 0227, R. Tirana is on the air tonight, good signal with IS before 0230 English. Earlier at 0050, Albanian hour was still on 7425, not too much QRM from China at the moment, but would be QRM-free on 7420 too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BELARUS. 7255, Dec 21 at 0609, Slavic sorta-Russian talk, poor signal with bits of music, stingers. First thought maybe Golos Rossii, similar sounding to 7320 Pet/Kam, but after 0610 definitely not //, 7320 with talk and 7255 with music. Might have been a local-programming split on one of them from R.R., but no. Second choice must be Belarus` as I know 7255 is one of their frequencies, but seldom heard here. Yes, HFCC shows 05-08, 250 kW, 75 degrees from Minsk to CIRAF 29 and 30 which means the eastern half of Belarus, most of Ukraine, western subarctic Russia as far east as meridian 90. Aoki shows Belaruskaye Radio 1 from Minsk-Kalodzicy except time as 04-07, no doubt confusion on timezone changes or not. Anyhow, this overlaps at least one hour with BBCWS English via ASCENSION which dominates 7255 at 03-06. HFCC also shows VOR Vladivostok 50 degrees at 04-06, but probably wooden, not in Aoki or EiBi (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake Dec 21, before 1430:
11500, good at 1416 // 11980; none in the 7s, 8s, 9s, or 10s

9955, the DCJC would not let R. Eslovaquia Internacional be relayed unimpeded on WRMI, Dec 21 at 1448, still with pulse jamming altho REI could be understood. The Cubans are so jealous of numerous countries which long ago threw off the yoke of communist dictatorship (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** FRANCE. 13725, Dec 21 at 1429, surprised to hear NHK signing off English with full list of frequencies for next English broadcast rather than this one for reference 23.5 hours later. Must have just come on, 1430 switch to NHK opening Persian, ``Inja Tokyo`` as scheduled to be relayed. I had heard NHK English earlier on 21560 via France, maybe same transmitter, altho on different antenna type and azimuth, as the slopperators at Issoudun did not suppress the audio closing of one service on another frequency before opening of the correct one (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MAURITANIA. 7245, Dec 21 at 0553, IGIM is already on earlier than usual in chanting (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. I have continued to notice that KUOK, Univisión keeps up a good signal on `36` even when there is no tropo enhancement and its analog low power on ch 48 in OKC is barely visible. Something strange is going on here. Finally, Dec 21 after 1543 UT, once I have tuned to ``36-1``` on the DTV converter, I change to manual tuning, and guess what, it displays I am axually watching KUOK on RF 29! That`s the high-power transmitter which carries bitter rival competing network Telemundo on KTUZ. In OKC the same company, Tyler Media has both affiliations.

I had wondered months ago why they Tyler didn`t just put UNI on a subchannel of their big ch 29 transmitter instead of messing with several low-power transmitters, and now they have, except they are hiding it. If I go directly to 29, all I get is KTUZ as 30-1, and no subchannels by stepping up. If I go to 36-1, I get KUOK, but now I know it has really remapped to RF 29. I HATE this remapping crap --- primary tuning should always be real RF channels, and then they can label them as something else, rather than vice versa!

More anomalies: the KUOK signal has aspect ratio changeability, while the KTUZ signal never has. Altho they must be both coming out of the same RF 29 DTV transmitter, KUOK still seems weaker, sometimes on the verge and breaking up, while KTUZ never does. As pointed out in my last report, KUOK does have a LP DTV license on RF 36, which may also be on the air but not really propagating this far (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 7490, Dec 20 at 2305 check, WBCQ with M-F paid programming `Money Talks` with heavy interference from BBCWS Thailand as usual, clashing 22-24 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Radio Romania Internazionale continua il tradizionale sondaggio rivolto ai suoi ascoltatori e utenti Internet, ma anche ai suoi amici su Facebook e Twitter, invitandovi a valutare quali delle personalità del presente hanno segnato di più, in senso positivo, l'andamento dell'umanità nel 2011. In base alle vostre opzioni la nostra emittente nominerà “La personalità del 2011 a RRI”.
 
Chi potrebbe essere e soprattutto perchè? Sarà un politico, un leader di opinione importante, un imprenditore, un rappresentante della Chiesa, un atleta, un artista, uno scienziato o, semplicemente, una persona sconosciuta al grande pubblico, e che però vanta una storia esemplare? New Taiwan transmitter site QSLs

Just a quick note (that was the intention), for the moment to let you know that I have been working behind the scenes to bring you this great offer. Back several months ago I contacted my friends in RTI (Radio Taiwan International) management if they might be able to print some special QSL cards.

I requested the following:-

1. QSL showing the current English staff
2. QSLs showing former (now extinct) SW txer sites used by RTI under it's numerous earlier titles, e.g. the Bali (PaLi) site used when RTI was known as VOFC.

AND finally
3. QSLs for each of the existing RTI SW transmitter sites.

Well here's what is now available:

AND
Two RTI SW transmitter site QSLs: One showing a curtain array at the Tainan site & the other showing transmitter building & antennas at the Paochung site, or branch station as RTI refers to them as. (I was advised just two weeks ago that these were now printed.)

I happily received my QSLs of the two RTI SW sites today & have a sample of the English staff QSL sent some weeks ago.

These QSLs are a special run & are not listed on the RTI website, so if you would like one of these special QSLs do request one.Importantly do make detailed program observations & comments with your reception report. RTI is primarily here to offer programs to listeners & is not a QSL service. It really values its genuine regular listeners & I think they do a great job with their programs. Nice people too.

When you do receive one of these special QSLs please write back to RTI & thank them & say that you really liked the SW transmitter site QSL/s & (if so inclined) that you would like to see further tx site imagery depicted on future QSLs of the other sites such as their Kouhu, Tamshui, Minshuing & Huwei branch stations. AND provide further program feedback.

A personal thank you also encourages me too <hehe>. The QSL cards are verified with FD including the site. I will scan imagery, for those interested, of the QSLs & post up on our YG later in the month.

** ALBANIA. 7420, UT Tue Dec 20 at 0226, open carrier, 0228 R. Tirana IS, 0230 sign-on English, barely audible with my domestic noise sources not suppressed, but enough to confirm back on air after missing 48 hours earlier. Drita Çiço explains:

``Last week Fllaka was off air due to blocking r/relay problem in Shijak or Fllaka r-st - as reported by Fllaka r-station. During the last days, Shijak is off air due to power interruption according to Shijak r-station. While TWR and CRI via Fllaka r-station are on air, with no interruption at all! - Radio Tirana Monitoring Center`` (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BHUTAN. 6035, looking for BBS after its re-appearance last week, Dec 20 at 1301, can only detect a VP signal with splash from China radio war on 6030; more likely Yunnan PBS. BBS also appeared on 5030 which others have heard, but not even a carrier there. Of course, that one has ACI from Cuba too. If we do hear anything on 5030, it won`t be Sarawak. Both frequencies have been sporadic so far, going off at unexpected times (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake Dec 19, before 1900:
9455, very poor at 1850. Tnx to Leonard Rooney, PA for reminder of this which he was hearing already at 1600. Vs RFA Chinese via Saipan at 16-22, unheard
9355, poor at 1850. Also vs RFA Chinese via Saipan at 17-22, unheard

Firedrake Dec 20, before 1400:
12230, very poor with flutter at 1335; by 1352 it has built up to fair

** CYPRUS [and non]. 17687-17712, Dec 20 at 1417, strong OTH radar pulsing, presumed from here, causing heavy QRM even to big broadcast signals RFI Guiana French in Spanish on 17690, BSKSA on 17705 --- and weaker CVC Zambia 17695 hasn`t a chance (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** FRANCE. 7220, Dec 20 at 0627, RFI English is still here instead of scheduled Hausa, now with news about KJI until abrupt cutoff at 0630* while much weaker // 9765 continues for the full hour in English. While TDF is SNAFU --- isn`t anyone paying attention at Issoudun? --- I`m not complaining as a semi-hour of good English reception is better than nothing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9470, Dec 20 at 1319, AIR National Channel via Aligarh with IS, 1320 ``Vande Mataram`` and sign-on in Hindi. 9470 is usually inferior to // 9425 via Bengaluru, but this time 9470 is better altho with some CCI underneath, presumably VOR Moskva site in Russian as scheduled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 6100, Dec 20 at 1304, extremely emotional OM in Korean; wonder what he`s pretending to be so upset about? Also // 6400 at 1307 but an echo apart. Aoki lists these as different services: 6100 KCBS Pyongyang, 250 kW ND, and 6400 Pyongyang BS, 50 kW ND, but both from Kanggye site.

9335, Dec 20 at 1310, VOK English to NAm is making it today, altho bothered by WBCQ 9330 which favors the upper side. Continuous Juche jamming is also still mixing into the VOK broadcasts, but at a low level so we can still copy the content, as I tune in a long string of Korean syllables, probably names of other officials. One of KJI`s post-mortem honorifix is ``benevolent father of the people``, yeah right, the genocidal maniac. Glad I am not having breakfast yet, as a bit of this crap is pukeworthy.

Nothing audible yet on // 11710, but at 1400 it`s in with IS and French ID ``La Voix de la Corée``, also with Juche jamming mix underneath, which was also audible unimpeded on 9335 during its open-carrier break at 1357 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11530, Dec 20 at 1355, V. of Mesopotamia via UKRAINE, Kurdish talk instead of usual music, with lite het on hi side 11532 or so, suspected spur from WEWN 11550, 18 kHz away, altho this transmitter is normally their only one without spurs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MAURITANIA. 7245, Dec 20 at 0627, IGIM is on and chanting, free for another minute or two of ACI from 250 kW VATICAN 7250 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 36, Dec 20 at 1530 UT there is enough tropo enhancement (?) for KUOK to lock in DTV with Univisión programming, local commercials inserted, PSIP ID as KUOK. FCC TV Query searching on those calls hits 9 entries revealing the call consolidation by licensee Oklahoma Land Company, LLC (not even a Spanish name!):

The *real*, plain-old KUOK is still ch 35 in Woodward with 8 kW ERP, CP MOD for 1000 kW --- will they ever complete that? Huge power to cover sparsely-populated area in NW OK, while the real market is in the dense OKC area.

Ch 36 in OKC is really KUOK-CD, only 7.3 kW but with CP for 14.65 and application for 14.3 (haven`t checked whether site changes are also involved). At this time, there was no enhancement of still-analog ch 48 in OKC carrying same programming, which as I recently noted is no longer called KWDW, but KUOK too --- except that one is really KUOK-LP, with 18.1 kW, a CP for LD with 15 kW, and an APP for 10.6 kW as a ``TX` service, meaning same analog as currently, and a CP for LD (low-power digital) with 15 kW. Furthermore, the KUOK-CD call is also licensed for channel 59 (which I have never seen) in OKC, as a 20 kW TX analog service despite the -CD suffix.

While KUOK-CD 36 remained locked in as late as 1820, and aspect ratio changes are allowed, I reconfirmed that there is no 36-2, and the signal on 46 from KOCM, 50 kW DT Daystar in Norman was too poor to decode, altho it nominally has enough signal into Enid to get onto Suddenlink cable ch 95 unlike KUOK. Suddenlink provides Univisión but off the satellite, not KUOK (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PHILIPPINES. 9555, Dec 20 at 1457, VOA Korean via Tinang-2 in well except for hum, so I decide to monitor how long it takes them to change to 9760, and what else happens. 9555 cuts off in mid-word before Korean is finished, at 1458:54*.

Then waiting for it to come up on 9760: cuts on late at *1500:24 with news in English already under way, cuts off again at 1500:54*, back on apparently to stay at *1501:07. So it took at least a sesquiminute to change frequencies, which would not be bad, if only VOA HQ would build in a programming pause so the English news would not have to be upcut! But that would make too much sense. Or not try to use the very same transmitter for adjacent broadcasts. The delay would be even worse if not for both Korean and English being on the same antenna, type 217 at 21 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 6074, Dec 20 at 1300, V/CQ marker on CW from 2MTL, presumed Russian army tactical somewhere in the Far East, is audible right after R. Rossii, Pet/Kam signs off 6075 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 17715, Dec 20 at 1332, surprised to find good signal from V. of Turkey in English news! Supposed to be on 12035, vacant. 1337 jingle and pause for ID, more news by YL, but 17715 cut off abruptly at 1342:41* as someone woke up in Emirler. Then I retune to proper channel 12035 and find a JBA carrier; by 1350 it has built up to very poor level, but recongnisable as VOT. I wish they would stay on 17715!

I figured that, as happens all too often with this negligent station, TRT must have failed to change frequency after previous hour broadcast on 17715 --- but it`s not scheduled on 17715 at any time! Instead German at 1230 on 17755 which we often hear well, much better than English in the mornings. So it was a double SNAFU, wrong frequency to start with, and stayed on the air overtime! The Emirler operators are just not paying attention. VOT was not the only station on wrong frequency this morning: see U S A WWCR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K. 3950-3955-3960, Dec 20 at 0638, DRM noise disrupting what would otherwise be a fully-occupied myriahertz of the American hamband. It`s BBC English per HFCC, 100 kW, 121 degrees from Skelton at 05-08 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Re previous report on R. Martí via WRMI 9955: Jeff White explains that the new morning hour at 12-13 M-F, `Tempranito y de Mañana`` is also a direct relay of Martí, part of their 4-hour morning magazine. The 23-24 UT `Cuba al Día` is delayed from RM at 2000 (or 2030, their website claims); the 0000 and 0400 UT times I had found for same title were for TV Martí, not Radio. There may be further changes on WRMI come January (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17655, Monday Dec 19 at 1825 surprised to find VOA Portuguese on this unlisted frequency, VG signal, must be Greenville. Had been and still supposed to be 17650 per latest HFCC info, 1800-1830 being the M-F extension of the daily 17-18 broadcast plus 1630-1700 on Fridays.

Looks like ex-17650 to avoid collision with Saudi Arabia in Bambara, daily 1600-1800, 500 kW, 250 degrees from Riyadh, which must have been ongoing since B-11 began. Next day Dec 20 at 1740 check, 17655 still, not 17650. I guess the HFCC registrations will eventually catch up with this change.

15620, Dec 19 at 1826 big open carrier, het from 15619 spur of WEWN 15610; 1829 VOA sign-on, 1830 fragment of English programming, switching error before welcoming us to the VOA in French. This is the only semi-hour from Greenville on 15620, daily, with seven(!) other sites used during the day for various other IBB services (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 7465, Dec 20 at 1257 surprised to find strong gospel-huxtering going on here, a WWCR frequency but not scheduled after 1200. Have they revived the #4 transmitter which had been taking a break between 12 and 15? Just 25 kHz away, at *1259 WWCR-2 is signing on, and then both continue for hours and hours.

Turns out that 15825 is absent, so 7465 is really WWCR-1 which failed to QSY at 1200. 15825, if on, should have been detectable, propagating as 15610 WEWN at similar distance was audible, and even weak Galei Zahal, ISRAEL was in on 15850 at 1326. After 1300, 7465 is still on, while 7490 has usual Joyce Riley // 13845. (Ever notice how much the WEWN talkhost on `Catholic Connexion` at 14-15, Teresa Tomeo, sounds like her?)

At 1309 I can hear some co-channel under 7465. That would be R. Thailand in Japanese, also in Mandarin and Thai during this hour which without WWCR are easily audible here; at 15-16, VOA English via Tinang is also on 7465.

Operating two adjacent transmitters on two frequencies so close to each other increases the risk of radiating mixing products. At 1340 I look for those, and indeed I can hear both audios mixing weakly on 7515; while 7440 had too much ACI from 7445.

At 1401 and 1450, 7465 still continues with `Inspirations Across America` instead of on 15825. 7465 still on at 1502. And still on at 1645 check when it has weakened a lot and 7490 has already moved to 12160. Still detectable poorly at 1740. When will anyone at WWCR realize that they have failed to come up on their all-day frequency 15825? What about clients who are paying for the very different coverage area of 15825 and are not getting it? Rebate?

Strangely enough, WWCR website displays a revised transmission schedule effective Dec 19, but for #1 it still shows 15825!

Aoki shows this one is 300 kW, 132 degrees from Almaty-Nikolayevka, KAZKAHSTAN at 13-14. And it is undermodulated, fluttery (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7480, Dec 20 at 1256, oscillating tone jamming, but nothing scheduled here which would `need` that. 7480 does bear Open Radio North Korea, via Armenia but at far different time 21-22. FEBC Philippines starts at 1300, however, due west for an hour in SE Asian minolity languages, so maybe the jamming is really for that from Vietnam, in which case Aoki ought to a*terisk it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Radiorama chiude e la lista pure: finalmente!

Dopo qualche mese di silenzio, approfittando degli ultimi giorni "pagati", la tentazione di rispondere a qualche messaggio mi è venuta... e avrei avuto pure il piacere, dopo parecchi anni, di salutare qualche amico e perchè no di parlare di questa chiusura. Inutile dirlo, la stupida e innocua censura nei miei confronti continua fino all'ultimo, esercitata da gente che pensa che moderando un utente gli si può impedire di fare arrivare ai destinatari il proprio pensiero. Pazienza, vi saluterò qui, tanto ci passate tutti e anche più spesso di quanto non passate da altre parti... Radiorama chiude, è triste, ma con i contenuti degli ultimi anni (addirittura pagine lasciate in bianco) è bene che sia andata così... per continuare a sfogliarlo al cesso bisognerà ora portarsi l'Ipad, e io non c'ho voglia, ma ringrazio tutti coloro che si sono già offerti di farmi leggere la loro copia. Anche la lista col nome storico chiude, riaperta con un altro nome e soprattutto da un'altro amministratore, tanto che un maligno penserebbe che è soltanto per togliere il controllo ai vecchi gestori senza l'onta della cancellazione dei diritti. Anche in questo caso, ringrazio tutti coloro che si sono offerti di informarmi riguardo messaggi interessanti o che mi riguardano. I tempi sono cambiati, e sono cambiate anche le persone, non che non avessimo qualcosa da dire anche a quelli che c'erano prima, anzi, ma i nuovi sembrano davvero inadeguati alle necessità di una moderna iniziativa del genere. Non mi sembra all'uopo, solo per esempio, un tipo a cui chiedi spiegazioni e invece di risponderti ti banna, o chi non pago di esibizioni internazionali in canestro e babbucce corteggia componenti femminili di redazioni italiane mandando per sbaglio i messaggi a tutti, o chi spamma quotidianamente migliaia di persone con richieste di iscrizioni a diciannove euro e novanta e che per qualcuno magari è un Dio solo perchè è riuscito a portare a termine un'iscrizione a Paypal! Tanto vero quanto triste questo pezzo di radioascolto italiano, sempre più piccolo ma purtroppo sotto gli occhi di tutti... tanti... troppi... e, soprattutto, per il dispiacere di qualcuno anche "pensanti".

Rinasce Radio Flash tornano le voci della storica emittente e... sti cazzi!

Non lo nego, dopo aver letto il titolo non ho potuto fare a meno di metterci uno "sti' cazzi", ma non avevo ancora visto il resto... al momento sono soltanto una web radio, e anche a qualità molto molto bassa, annunciano un imminente 1332 AM stereo "appena ci consegneranno il trasmettitore... speriamo a natale o di sicuro prima del 31.! ". Beh, non è che dopo che arriva il corriere basta attaccare la spina, a meno che non si tratti di una microspia...

Secondo uno degli animatori (Marco Sisi) ne hanno appena cominciato a parlare e l'altro (Morrone) è stato un po' frettoloso nello scrivere "cercatela in AM"... "perché ci sono ancora da stabilire frequenza esatta, tipo di antenna e potenza impiegata, da cui la possibilità effettiva di coprire col segnale una data area più o meno vasta. L'AM è una novità da tutti i punti di vista.". Insomma, per loro è una novità che saranno i primi in Toscana a scoprire... mi sembra un po' in ritardo rispetto a chi lo ha scoperto ormai da decenni...

Sintonizzatevi sul web, cercatela in Am: sotto l'abete c'è un regalo per i livornesi, che da oggi ritrovano Radio Flash. A distanza di quasi 10 anni dall'ultima trasmissione, due dei fondatori originali (Andrea Palermo e Marco Sisi) accendono il segnale e resuscitano una delle storiche emittenti cittadine. Oggi ci sarà l'inaugurazione in diretta dal Carolina Caffè (via Cairoli 49, a partire dalle 16 fino alle 24), da domani il lancio ufficiale su internet all'indirizzo www.radioflash.biz (o www.radiolivorno.it e www.radioflash.info), e presto anche sulle onde medie (Am stereo 1332).

Emozionati come al primo giorno di scuola, la squadra di Radio Flash composta per l'80% dai vecchi collaboratori che l'hanno portata al successo era ieri nella sede provvisoria, in via del Bosco 16. «L'idea di rimettere in piedi l'emittente è nata su Facebook - racconta Andrea Palermo - oggi tutti siamo impegnati in differenti attività ma ci siamo ritrovati sul social network e ne abbiamo discusso, trovando presto l'intesa». A chi negli anni '80-'90 la ascoltava (la radio è nata nel 1977 sulle frequenze 99.2 e poi 97.7 e i 98.9 di Radio Flash 2) suoneranno noti i nomi di Riccardo D'Ancona e Massimo Suardi (Snoopy), e poi Riccardo Baroncini e Riccardo Novi, passando per Steve Martin, insieme a Brunella Magherini, Laura Paggini, Marco Sentelli, Dj Careca (Roberto Casagrande), Fabio Lenzi, Charlie Dee, con Davide Di Luca alla redazione giornalistica. Certo, sulla fronte qualche ruga in più, ma l'entusiasmo proprio non si è affievolito. Battute, sorrisi e tanta voglia di rimettersi in gioco. Radio Flash partirà con alcune trasmissioni registrate e altre in diretta, ma sarà presto il live ad animare l'intera giornata dell'emittente, con le voci degli speaker intervallate da telefonate e messaggi. Non mancheranno le pillole dei notiziari e gli appuntamenti con la realtà cittadina e quelli nei locali della movida livornese. «Dopo vari passaggi di mano e la definitiva scomparsa della radio - spiega Marco Sisi - siamo riusciti a far rinascere Flash. Con l'obiettivo di legarla al territorio e dare un'opportunità ai livornesi fuori sede di collegarsi sul web per stare sempre in contatto con la città». Una doppia anima quindi, quella moderna legata alle potenzialità della rete e degli smartphone, e l'altra più nostalgica per coloro ancora legati alla tradizionale forma della radio. Perché, nel giro di qualche settimana, Flash si ascolterà anche in Am. «Negli Usa - aggiunge Palermo - il pianeta delle onde medie ha ripreso vigore e sono convinto che pure in Italia presto avrà successo, anche perché la qualità si è evoluta moltissimo. Al momento esistono solo dieci emittenti, noi siamo la prima toscana a sperimentare questo binario. Livorno potrà così riabbracciare una radio locale, perché dopo Flash nessun'altra è riuscita a fungere da punto di riferimento per la città».

** EAST TURKISTAN. 11785, Dec 19 at 1425, Firedrake-like music but soon joined by operatic vocals, so not FD. CRI Chinese to Europe is scheduled 14-1457, 500 kW, 308 degrees from site Aoki now calls ``Kashi-Saibagh 2022 TKS`` a.k.a. Kashgar (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** FRANCE. 15360, Dec 19 at 1430, good with RFI ID and sounders amid Persian, fair signal // 17850. This 1430-1500 broadcast is to replace 15360 by 21580 on Feb 26, a nonsensical date when RFI plans many more upward spring shifts for one month before the A-12 schedules kick in (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 6400, Dec 19 at 0630, P`yongyang BS is audible with sad music, ute QRM. 0650, YL in Korean sounds distraught about something or other.

6435, MND, from South to North, Dec 19 at 0631 with YL in Korean, 0632 into choral music closing, // weaker 6550.

6518 & 6600, V. of the People, from South to North, at 0633 Dec 19, lite jamming on 6518, no jamming audible on 6600.

Harold Frodge, MI, noted that VOK transmissions were missing earlier on Dec 17 and 18; that should have been a clue that something significant had happened! However, VOK was back when I checked:

9335, Dec 19 at 1414, French about Kim Jung Il [hereafter KJI], what else? Dead or alive. Poor signal but could still hear mixture with NK-style jamming noise bleeding into the broadcast. At this moment WBCQ was missing from 9330-CUSB, tho it was there a few minutes earlier. At 1441, it was back, impeding weakish signal from Kujang. // 11710 not propagating. At 1500 could make out VOK IS and English IDs on 9335, but too weak vs WBCQ and still no 11710 making it.

** MAURITANIA. 7245, Dec 19 at 0637, IGIM is on with Arabic talk, singing, not chanting or Qur`an; weaker than Vatican Hungarian massbit on 7250 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SLOVAKIA [non]. 9955, Dec 19 at 1444, Spanish in strange accent, soon talking about Slovakia, and `Encrucijadas musicales`, Xmas tunes. So RSI relay, best I have heard WRMI in some time; only lite residual pulse jamming. 1459 apparently switches to RMI fill music, as hit by fast SAH, 1500 RFA opening Tibetan with English announcement, much stronger signal despite much greater distance and wrong direxion, 297 degrees from Tinian. The 1430-1500 period lucks into a gap after KTWR is on 9955 until 1430, before RFA at 1500.

Then WRMI goes off for its 8-hour siesta weekdays until resuming at 2300. But WRMI continues to register 24 hours on 9955, including the 15-17 UT segment as 317 degrees, altho that antenna has been down for almost two years; everything is really on the 160 antenna.

New WRMI program grid dated Dec 13 shows RSI as follows:

** TURKEY. 12035, Dec 19 at 1422, TRT closing English and into IS, poor with flutter. Interspersed Turkish IDs and still on past 1424. Insufficient, so I didn`t miss anything earlier from 1330. New M-F at 1200-1300 is `Tempranito y de Mañana`, Early in the Morning. What`s that about? Exile show, ergo must be jammed? Replaces the 1230 Monday airing of WORLD OF RADIO. Another big block is `Cuba al Día`, M-F at 23-24, the Radio Martí program which WRMI trial-ran a few weeks ago, and which per RM`s own schedule is UT Tue-Sat at 0000 and 0400, so it gets advance play by one hour on WRMI?? Compare to Greenville frequencies to see if really // now. There`s also a `Noticiero` of unknown origin Wed-Fri at 04-05, suspect also originating with R. Martí. That takes care of the ex-0430 UT Thursday WOR broadcast.

So the remaining WORLD OF RADIO times on the 9955 SW schedule are:

Fri 0600, Sat 0900, 1600, 1830, Sun 0900, 1630, 1830.

On webcast only: Mon-Tue-Wed 1630, Thu 1600, Fri 1530. Mon 2230, Thu 2200.

SOLAR CONDITIONS

Solar conditions were fairly quiet during this week, with only simple (alpha, beta) active regions on the disk. At the beginning of the week (a returning) Active Region NOAA 11376 (Catania 80) rotated on the east limb on the disk, which caused the background GOES X-ray flux to rise above C.0 level on 14 Dec. This caused several C-flares on this day. During the other days of this week the sun was fairly quiet with a small C-flare now and then.

** ALBANIA. 7420, Dec 18 at 0235, no signal from R. Tirana (nor alt. 7425), yet with lots of other European signals making it on 7 MHz, so must really be off the air; why? Haven`t checked the 00-01 Albanian broadcast lately, whether still on 7425 mixing with China or on clear 7420 as I have recommended repeatedly, but no word received of any change. Inertia is a powerful force (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ANGUILLA. 6090, Dec 18 at 0603, shux, PMS is back on after several nights missing while 11775 remained on at day. AFAIK, no one reported Uruguay or Chile in the meantime, if they were ever even on the air, let alone Liberia listed as inactive in last year`s WRTH. At least we heard Ethiopia, Nigeria and Brasil (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6150, Dec 18 at 1305, RHC is still on with heavy CCCCI instead of closing at 1300. I wondered if it was delaying moving to 9540 where on Sundays only, WHRI blox it until 1400; could not hear any RHC underneath WHRI, but 6150 did not stay on the full hour. Also looked for 13690 which appeared a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning before 1400, since they could hardly use 13750, occupied by jamming and VOA, but no 13690 this week. 13750 was on after 1400 instead of 9850, as well as on 13670 and 13780, including `En Contacto` at 1435. There would be no need for such complexity and uncertainty if Arnie chose frequencies which are clear 7 days a week, but that would require coördination in HFCC or at least astute monitoring (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MAURITANIA. 7245, Dec 18 at 0621, IGIM is still not on the air. If they had a consistent sign-on time, there would be no need to log notes of this (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 17530 and 15460, Dec 18 at 1340, the RRI German hour is still marred by strange ringing artifacts on the sidebands of each, but inescapable by center-tuning either, as earlier noted on Dec 15, and some weeks before that. Something wrong with their program feed in this service, presumably also affecting English at 12-13 on same, which the Tiganeshti transmitters are not filtering out (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 6074, Dec 18 after R. Rossii closed with late timesignal at 1300*, kept tuned with BFO and could barely hear the start of a CQ at 1301, from 2MTL or 8GAL, no doubt (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330, Dec 18 at 1308, `Glad Tidings to Zion` passage from Handel`s Messiah by a great singer, but GFRN via WBCQ doles out only small doses of great music, segué to some more modern hymn, both marred by IADs, and it`s just as well not to subject Handel to those or SSB any longer than that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
