Art of Radio Hawaii Competition

To celebrate Hawaii's 50 years of statehood in 2009, the Radio Heritage Foundation [www.radioheritage.net] is running a new competition open worldwide.

It's on-line exhibition 'Art of Radio Hawaii' features great art work of letterheads and logos from Hawaiian AM radio stations since the 1930's, and is already amongst the most popular content at www.radioheritage.net.

To enter the competition, simply visit the 'Art of Radio Hawaii' exhibition before February 14 2009, and send an email to info@radioheritage.net headed 'Art of Radio Hawaii Competition' with the answer to this question:

VINELAND — La estación de radio WMVB 1440 AM comenzó a transmitir en español para captar a la creciente audiencia hispana del condado de Cumberland."Vamos a hacer radio durante todo el día con programación enfocada a la comunidad mexicana, centroamericana, caribeña y sudamericana que viven en esta zona", comentó Efraín Muñiz, responsable de la nueva emisora que acordó contrato con Quinn Broadcasting Inc., corporación propietaria de esta estación y también del Canal 2 QBC de televisión y de WSNJ 1240 AM de Millville.

Desde el 1º de enero, la 1440 AM se llama Radio Éxito y los productores están trabajando para armar la grilla de programación de la semana radial, contó Muñiz.

"De lunes a viernes planeamos tener pura programación local, los sábados seguramente alternaremos con programación del Caribe y los domingos venderemos el tiempo para las iglesias".

Muñiz comenzó a trabajar en radio en la 1270 AM de Vineland hace siete años, luego tuvo programas en la 1440 AM, durante tres años participó en la 1540 AM de Bala Cynwid en Pennsylvania y en el 2007 pasó Radio Éxito a la 1680 AM en Philadelphia.

"Estamos buscando locutores y gente para nuestro departamento de ventas", agregó Muñiz en entrevista telefónica con esta redacción mientras alternaba salidas al aire.

DW - ASCENSION Y EMIRATOS ARABES (DHABAYYA)

ASCENSION

La Voz de Alemania recientemente y como se he comunicado oportunamente, ha dejado de transmitir en la frecuenca habitual de 9.545 kcs desde hace mucho tiempo (A-08); cambiando a la nueva frecuencia de los 9.775 kcs. desde las 0000 hasta las 0200 UTC, el resultado muy satisfactorio en el cono Sur0, de tal forma que aunque continua con una interferencia por Co-Channel con una emisora China (2100 0200, CHN CNR 2, China Business R., M, CHN 9755a 9775b); ahora la señal de la DW se superpone a la China escuchandose diametralmente mejor.

Tambien La Voz de Alemania ha procedido desde el 1º de enero 2009 a suprimir 9.545 kcs a las 2200-0000 cambiandola por 9.475 kcs, con excelente resultado, señal potente y sin inteferencias, lo cual es totalmente distinto a la fecuencia anterior al 31 de diciembre que tenia una fuerte interferencia desde hace mucho tiempo de la VOA en idioma chino desde Filipinas.

** AUSTRIA [non]. Checking whether OE1 still has an English news segment on the CANADA relay 16-17 on 13675: Jan 8 tuned in at 1619 and all in German except for a few sex of English at 1651 in an axuality, quickly voiced-over in AustroGerman. Thought maybe English would show at 1645, as there was a report of that happening at 0045, presumably on 7325, during a formerly full English broadcast. Then at 1655 went to Blue Danube IS and multilingual IDs in German, English, French and Spanish! just to fill up the hour until 1659*. That would have been enough time to repeat the entire 4-minute English news segment from the previous morning 0710 on 6155. Since these don`t appear on their schedule, we need people to note the exact times and frequencies when English is still heard. Meanwhile an open carrier came on 13680 around 1627 past 1630; Cuba for some reason? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL [and non]. BBCWS in English, via South Africa, 11765 at 335 degrees, Jan 8 at 0620 ruined by the wacky wailing preacher who speaks neither Portuguese nor Spanish but a bastardized mixture of them, David Miranda who has occupied yet another Brazilian transmitter, this one in Curitiba and supposedly renamed Súper-Rádio Deus é Amor; roughly equal strength to BBC and with fast SAH of maybe 15 Hz. If God really loved us he would not do this to us. Found to be // Curitiba on 9565, this one in the clear; where`s the DentroCuban Jamming Command when we need them? ** COSTA RICA [and non]. As I was checking out RNZI`s other frequencies while 6170 was missing (see NEW ZEALAND), I could not help but notice that the REE relay on 9765 was nothing but a steady open carrier, Jan 8 at 1450. Same appeared to be the case on 15170, but with the usual Romanian co-channel audio and SAH. The third frequency, 11815, was modulating as usual, which means under-modulating, but at least it was audible during Españoles en la Mar, while 17595 direct was weaker than usual (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. RHC discrepancy report: Jan 8 at 1430, the big signal on 15370 was missing. Other frequencies confirmed as usual: 15360, 15120, 13760, 13720 (leapfrog 13760 over CRI relay 13740), 13680. At 1445 recheck, 15370 was back on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA [and non]. After some Indian music on 9870, the Vividh Bharati Service channel of AIR, Jan 7, I was surprised to hear at 1400 an ID in English instead for the General Overseas Service, then a program about Indian cinema. But the GOS in English at 1330-1500 is supposed to be on 9690, where nothing was audible.

They are both listed as Bangalore/Bangaluru site, on 9870 500 kW at 335 degrees, 0845-1200 and 1230-1740 with VBS; On 9690 500 kW at 108 degrees, 1330-1500 only with GOS. 9870 had a good signal but with polar flutter, as usually the case with it. The other 31m frequency audible here, National Channel on 9425, could be heard weaker in Hindi talk at 1419 check. It`s 500 kW at 18 degrees, 1320 to 0040 UT.

9870 continued in English at 1420 with press review, negative about the Gaza situation; 1425 interviewing a Bengali poet, 1436 saying that had come from the AIR archives; 1437 into film music from ``Dawn``. All this Indian film music primed me to go see another good movie in current release, Slumdog Millionaire, which does not paint a pretty picture of Bharat, altho it seems far-fetched that a quiz-show contestant would be tortured on suspicion of cheating. And the following evening from 0500 UT Thursday, I had to listen to Spice Routes on KBCS webcast.

Back to 9870: at 1456 with concluding news summary by YL. 1459 sign-off as the AIR GOS to SE Asia but S/N ratio had decreased and could not copy frequencies; I strongly suspect the 9690 and 9870 feeds got switched by mistake. Or maybe 9690 was down so they deliberately put GOS on 9870 transmitter as substitute? 1500:30 to tone test past 1502, and 1503 into music, perhaps back to the correct VBS. I asked the DXLD yg to please check on January 8 whether this happens again or GOS is back on 9690; and what about // 13710, also Bangaluru 500 kW 108 degrees, and // 11620 Delhi.

So far no reports from elsewhere received, but I checked it again the next day, Jan 8: at 1400, 9690 was audible with music not // 9870 music. 1420, 9690 confirmed back in English with another press review, while 9870 went on with VBS music. 11620 and 13710 were very weak but seemed to be // 9690 as they should be, altho 11620 not in synch. 1425 into talk about medical tourism by a correspondent of The Hindu newspaper. Unfortunately, her higher-pitched voice and accent made it hard to understand. I also noticed that 9690`s usual hum had also resumed.

Another India-related program I recommend is Extension 720 from WGN Chicago, which I was listening to until 0415 UT Thursday, interviewing the author of a book about Gandhi and Churchill. Unfortunately it`s missing from the Jan 7 schedule info at

but maybe will show up in one of the podcasts or audio archives (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI missing from 6170, Jan 8 at 1403 and still missing at 1446 when I also checked several other possible frequencies in case they got stuck on one of them: 7145, 9615, 9655, 9765, 11675, 11725, 13660, but those were either empty or occupied by other stations. RA was audible poorly on 5995, 6080, 7240, so RNZI should have been detectable on 6170 if on the air. Then I check the website and find this notice which almost accounts for the absence:

``Transmitter Maintenance 07 Jan, 2009 20:49 UTC --- There may be interruptions to our short-wave broadcasts on Thursday 8 January from 1045-1800 NZDT (2145-0500 UTC)``.

BTW, this also gives me a chance to point out an annoying matter of style I am frequently correcting as I edit: if you write ``from`` before a pair of times, you should also write the word ``to`` between the times. If you are going to put a hyphen between them, you should write the word ``at`` before them. I suspect people who mix the two are subvocalizing and convert the ``-`` into ``to`` without thinking of how it looks in print (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Another check of 1680 kHz, Jan 7 at 0633 found gospel music from KRJO Monroe LA. Then I shifted to 1670 for a while, WTDY Madison WI, promoting their website http://madison1670.com and its links to Pulse TV. So I also checked out their program schedule at http://wtdy.com/viewpage.php?id=5
and find that Sundays at 1-2 am CST, WTDY runs The Best of Tom Leykis which is exactly what I thought I was hearing on 1680; so I conclude that semi-sleeping, I must have been on 1670 instead of 1680.

I see that many of WTDY`s talkshows are far-right extremists, including Dennis Miller, Glenn Beck, Michael Medved, Laura Ingraham, just what Madison needs. I wonder what inspired the call letters --- as a vet, I always think of ``temporary duty``, but it could be ``turdy``, or more politely, ``too damn yucky``, or: ``We Talk Down to You`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

RUSIA 5905 Radio Rossii, Moskva-Taldom, 18:25-18:35, escuchada el 8 de enero en ruso con emisión de una pieza musical de Elvis Presley, locutor con titulares acompañada de música de fondo, más música de Elvis Preley, SINPO 44444

5960 Radio Vlaanderen Int., St. Peterburg-Popov, 18:35-18:40, escuchada el 8 de enero en holandés con emisión de música pop local, locutor con comentarios, conversación con invitado, SINPO 44444

5815 NO ID, 18:49-18:52, vuelvo a captar a esta emisora tras haber perdido su señal en esta frecuencia, sin embargo en 5835 se seguía captando en fuerte colisión con VOA, la señal es pobre y acompañada de mucho ruido, locutor con comentarios y emisión musical, SINPO 23232

7415 Música jammer melódica atorando al servicio chino de Radio Free Asia, esta música es más melódica y menos estruendosa que las Firedrake Dragon, a las 19:00 UTC termina su emisión con unos tonos horarios. También se escucha en la frecuencia de 7445 atorando la misma emisora.
¿Adios a las estruendosas Firedrake Dragon?.

UNID 5815 NO ID, 17:35-17:48, escuchada el 8 de enero en idioma árabe a locutor con comentarios, se aprecia muy subido de tono, habla a veces gritando, se capta emisión en paralelo por 5835 en colisión con VoA Deewa Radio, referencias a "Asan y Arabía", a las 17:42 comienza emisión musical, me suena a cánticos militares o revolucionarias, cánticos con repique de tambores, a las 17:47 otra pieza musical de las mismas características, SINPO 44343

Il sole continua a tacere

Negli ultimi 2 anni la radiazione solare verso la Terra ha toccato i minimi assoluti dal 1978, rimanendo sempre al di sotto dei 1365.3 Watt a metro quadro. Questa è la conseguenza misurabile più importante dell'attuale minimo solare, che si conferma uno dei più critici degli ultimi 250 anni. Anche la NASA ha dovuto gettare la spugna di fronte alla reiterata assenza di macchie solari: non solo l'inizio del nuovo ciclo è stato ulteriormente posticipato, ma ne è anche stata ridotta notevolmente l'intensità. In parole povere con la debacle di dicembre gli assertori di un 24° ciclo forte si sono dovuti ricredere, prevedendo un'attività solare addirittura inferiore a quella del precedente massimo. Mai prima d'ora si era assistito ad un passo indietro così clamoroso. Di fatto più l'attività solare si mantiene bassa più le proiezioni per il futuro si fanno incerte; nel frattempo il 2008 crolla al 10° posto della speciale classifica del caldo e l'Europa riscopre rigori invernali che sembravano ormai sopiti. La crisi solare sta cominciando a contagiare anche il clima? http://www.3bmeteo.com:80/giornale/meteo_articolo-8701.htm. Le recenti nevicate registrate nel nord Italia paragonabili a quelle del 1986 dimostrano chiaramente che la vita del nostro burrascoso granello di senape chiamato Terra, dipende dall'attività solare ..... se questa rallenta .....gli inverni sono più intensi....... come quello in corso .... Anche la propagazione ne risente ....non occorre essere degli scienziati della NOAA ....... per capirlo.... valori WWA compresi tra 68 e 70 non permettono ricezioni ottimali ..... dei segnali operanti nella fascia compresa tra 3200 e 5100 kHz ...... In conclusione ......se il sole non ricomincia la sua attività ...... le cose non miglioreranno .....

Free Asia as scheduled; online references differ whether site is Sri Lanka or Saipan, but the latter is more likely and more recent. If WWRB were not there, RFA would have a fine signal even here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Usual sloppy operation at Quivicán, Bejucal, and/or Bauta transmitter sites: Jan 6 on 13680, replay of 1100 UT RHC program Despertar con Cuba was underway until cut off at 1501*. RNV relay on 11680 was in English about FARC operations in Venezuela, when also cut off the air at 1504* and still not on at 1515 recheck. Strano segnale ricevuto sui 18 Mhz

Ero alla ricerca di qualche stazione utility in Hf da ascoltare e ho ricevuto un segnale veramente particolare, penso che si tratti di una radar HF ma e' la prima volta che vedo qualcosa di simile. Il segnale osservato sul waterfall del Perseus assume almeno tre diverse forme, lo stesso si riscontra ascoltandolo in usb, sembra qualcosa utilizzato per sondare la ionosfera.. con una modulazione forse simile a quella del DRM.

Qualcuno ha idea che di cosa puo' essere ?

** AUSTRALIA. RA, 7240, Jan 3 at 1505:30 after news, reverting to ``Overnight on ABC Local Radio``. We are hearing a lot of this instead of the usual RA/ABC feature programs before and after this hour. That`s because RA gives up for several weeks each summer and just plugs into a misnamed ABC network, which even without this SW relay, is still a national, not local service, i.e. originating at each local station as you would be entitled to expect (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. CBC NQ, 9625 remained in whack, Jan 4 at 1415, but NHK relay on 11705 was again splattering 11685-11725, especially during music, which is the Sunday subject (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. The day before, Firedrake vs Sound of Hope was on 8400, but Jan 3 at 1426 check it was back on 9000 instead. Firedrake back on 8400, Jan 4 at 1406 check, ex-9000 the day before, ex-8400 the day before that, no doubt mimicking the saults of Sound of Hope (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Still no Aló, Presidente relay of RN Venezuela, Sunday Jan 4; however, one of the frequencies which had been used for that on Sundays only, strong 13750, was on the air with extended RHC programming. At 1520 with weekly Esperanto service supposedly on 11760 only, where // but much weaker and an echo ahead of 13750 feed. 1551 check, 13750 still on with El Mundo de la Filatelia; audio cuts down but not completely out, periodically: wiggle that patchcord! Shortly followed by Por Una Vida Mejor medical show about living to age 120 or more, as if anyone would really want to do that in a police state full of privation; kept running past 1600 but did not pay attention to content; 1701 check, starting replay of Cuba Campesina, which originally airs at 1230. Perhaps they are keeping one transmitter warm for a return of the Cold One. Still on with more music at last check 1800 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUAM. 9975, Sat Jan 3 at 1420, sounds like a vintage Billy Graham sermon, with his peculiar accent, over a PA system. Trouble is, EiBi and Aoki say KTWR uses 9975 after 1400 on M-F only, but nothing else scheduled. WWCR 9980 was still weak before daily buildup to super-strength.

9975 again with English preaching after hymn, Sunday Jan 4 at 1411, sounded like Rev. Victor Bornay (sp?), something Gospel Hour, ref. Isaiah 55, about immigration. Like Sat, presumably KTWR extended to daily from M-F only at this hour, and once again, ACI from WWCR 9980 weak at first, but then building steadily (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** LAOS [non]. 11785, WHRI, Sat Jan 3 at 1459 after rustic music from Hmong Lao Radio, no break, no legal ID, and right into next program, Hmong World Christian Radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Looking for XEQM, 6104.8, no trace of even a het Jan 3 before 1500 with strong VOA Chinese on 6105, but after that went off at 1503, could barely detect het against remaining pileup. Het was doing better Jan 4 after 1400. Julián Santiago says XEQM had been off for more than a dekaday, but since Jan 3 he is hearing it in the daytime (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. KEOR, Catoosa/Sperry/Tulsa OK, 1120, had kept on with nothing but music tests for weeks and weeks, but missing Jan 3 at 1937 check, allowing KMOX to just barely be heard as its skywave was starting to build. ** SPAIN. REE, 17595, Sunday Jan 4 at 1435 ending one episode of Solo Canciones from Radio Clásica network, with French interpretations of music about Spain, e.g. by Saint-Saëns; and into another episode of same show, this with songs from Cabo Verde, and later Niger. 1459 just started something by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, only to be interrupted at 1500 for time signal and immediate joining of live(?) Tablero [Deportivo] show. Most unprofessional and disrespectful of the music show. I figured this was going to happen as they were starting a half-hour program at :35! ** U S A. Marion`s Attic on WBCQ, 7415, Sat Jan 3 at 2200 featured music boxes, and I believe she said there would be more of that next week. I really enjoy their tinkles, but at 2258 something went very wrong as show was upwrapping, bits of audio of Marion looping over and over, but progressing syllable by syllable. Fortunately, it was almost over anyway, unlike a few weeks ago when this happened for some 15 minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1680, UT Sun Jan 4 at 0740, found Tom Leykis show in progress discussing the merits of women as sports reporters, not a topic of interest to me, but what station could that be? Talk format does not match any of the 1680 listings in the NRC AM Log 2008-2009, all of which are either Spanish or religion or nostalgia. Closest might be what is now WPRR Ada MI, except that is non-commercial, or is it? And their website linked from Wikipedia goes nowhere: http://www.publicrealityradio.org/ and official(?) show site http://www.blowmeuptom.com/ unseems to have a station list (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Qualche ascolto annotato al volo durante una mini dx-pedition pomeridiana/serale in collina,a San Marco la Catola (FG), sul subappennino dauno - devo ancora "sbobinare" le registrazioni effettuate con il Perseus. L'antenna era una filare lunga circa 20 metri, connessa al Perseus tramite il solito balun 1:9. Rispetto alla città, gran silenzio "elettrico" e segnali poderosi sulle bande basse. Ho evitato di ripetere mie segnalazioni recenti.

** CUBA. DentroCuban Jamming Command with heavy attack on 9785, Jan 3 at 0054, versus nothing, since R. República quit this Sackville relay frequency a few weeks ago. At same time big open carrier on 9820, presumably remnant of RHC Mesa Redonda service or more special revolutionary programming. I see that CSPAN ran Raúl`s speech from last night, translated (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY [non]. If it`s DW, it can`t be from Germany: Jan 3 at 0055 found German talk on 9775 stronger than // 9655 except 9655 was running about three words, or two compound words, ahead of 9775. 9655 is Rwanda, 9775 is Ascension (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. Voz da Rússia, 11605, Brazilian service with NY greetings to and from listeners, UT Sat Jan 3 at 0040. The YL announcer`s accent sounded sort of mid-Atlantic, but more Brazilian than Lusitanian; classical and big band music was constantly playing in background, periodically brought up to full during pauses; concluded with ruvr.ru website, but at 0047 plugged discredited `thief` URL, http://www.vor.ru in order to reach live webstream of this during 00-01 UT hour. 0048 new program, Mundo da Ciência e da Tecnologia, and the OM doing this was definitely Luso. G signal, best I`ve heard VOR in Portuguese in a long time, but some fading.

That`s because it is the GUIANA FRENCH relay even tho I am getting it off the back/side of the 181-degree azimuth. Off already at 0057 recheck. VOR still has another hour in Portuguese to Europe at 2200, so they probably mix the accents in duplicated programming. I assume the Brazilians and Portuguese are more tolerant of that than the Arabs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Despite published Area 51 schedule for this date, first monitoring webcast, then 5110v, UT Sat Jan 3 from 0000, no WORLD OF RADIO but instead the WBCQ show with a phone number for a title. 0051 faux record offer; I did not realize until 0057 during comedy skit instead of International Radio Report, that this was running // 7415. Maybe that`s the default if separate Area 51 programming isn`t arriving for some reason (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. I haven`t looked for it much lately, but some question whether WRNO has been active. It was there on 7505, UT Jan 3 at 0156 open carrier, only fair with fades, 0200 some modulation starting but I was distracted. Later in the hour, 0236 with music, some talk later, but hard to copy with weak signal in the noise level. How is it doing at a longer skip distance, and closer to the 20-degree azimuth, such as Michigan? Supposed to be on air only at 0200-0500. That explains why Walt Salmaniw in the QCI was not hearing them at 0135 Jan 2; the *0100 UT start was DST timing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

RADIO JOYSTICK tomorrow morning on new frequency

RADIO JOYSTICK began via Radio Milano International, 2009 it will return to Milano, Italy!
It's the "Italian Radio Relay Service (Nexus International Broadcasting Association)" which will transmit RADIO JOYSTICK every first saturday of each month, on 9510 kHz (in the 31-m-shortwave band).

The transmitter site is near Rimavská Sobota (in german the name is "Großsteffelsdorf"; in Hungarian it's named "Rimaszombat"), 150 kW of power are used.

RADIO JOYSTICK will continue to inform about the small island Malta (because the Republikka 'ta Malta has no external radio services any more) - and play carefully selected music!

Un giornalista della radio somala Shabelle, Hassan Mayow Hassan, è stato ucciso ad Afgoi, 30 chilometri a sud di Mogadiscio. Il padre e alcuni testimoni hanno puntato il dito contro le truppe governative. "Lo accusavano di sostenere i ribelli islamici e lo avevano già minacciato di morte", ha detto il padre alla radio. Stando alla ricostruzione fornita da alcuni testimoni, i soldati hanno chiamato il cronista e gli hanno sparato alla testa. La Somalia è uno dei Paesi più pericolosi per la stampa. ** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, 7435 had somewhat improved modulation January 1 compared to December 31 when it was extremely distorted. Jan 1 at 2217 check, still low-fidelity during rock music, with only the lower audio frequencies passing, but not very distorted (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. Once again, the CBCNQ Service transmitter on 9625 is way out of whack: Jan 1 at 2222, found R. Exterior de España, 9640, which is normally a loud and clear signal, suffering ratchy interference from off-frequency extremely distorted FMing spur which also ranged from 9635 to 9650. Absolutely nothing, not even a carrier, could be detected on 9625. At 2229 I was able to tell that the spur was speaking English, heard year 2008 mentioned. At 2239 with BFO on I could detect a weak carrier among the mess on 9637, now spreading 9633 to 9650, stepping kHz-by-kHz on the YB-400. Next check at 2315, REE 9640 had closed down, and now the spur was interfering with two weaker stations on 9635 and 9645, presumably Chile and Brasil.

This transmitter has gone in and out of whack several times in the last weeks. When this happens, the signal is completely useless, cannot possibly be understood in the target area, and serves only to put severe interference on other stations.

Later: RCI Sackville tell me they are diligently working on the 9625 transmitter problem, but it has to be on the air in order to troubleshoot. Meanwhile it was back in whack at 1453 Jan 2, if not exactly back on frequency 9625, producing a rumbling lo het with BBC and/or Channel Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 8400 still bearing Firedrake, at 1451 check Jan 2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. The big day has arrived: the fiftieth anniversary of the triumph of the revolution. I figured there would be something special on RHC, and there was, tuned in Jan 1 at 2320 on 9820, the Mesa Redonda special frequency, a live rally from Santiago including speeches, songs, ID as Cadena Nacional de Radio; the `acto central` apparently the première of a new film about the revolution. This was no doubt on many different domestic networks too. Found // on Rebelde, 5025 with best signal, also weaker RHC on 11760-echo, 6000, 11690, 13760, 6180; and at 2342 also on 9600 while 9550 was in English as usual. I then brought up the Cubavisión webcast, but it was so jerky I kept the separate Rebelde webcast going for the audio. 5-star general Raúl Castro Ruz began his big speech just before 0000, continued past 0030, and he became a stationary object on the ever-buffering video. Wrapped up at 0038 and back to regular programming.

RHC again running way past nominal sign off of 0700 for English, still going at 0724 Jan 2 on 6000, but not 6060 or 6140, `Ed Newman` with year-end summary of USA woes. Why not let the transmitter op snooze? It`s before midnight in the PST, AST and HST zones (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. Again ran across that Cuban exile ham who pontificates in Spanish with anti-communist polemix, on 7210.0 SSB, Jan 2 at 1434. This time I caught his call, N1NR, and he was in contact with W4NNN, I think, but never a trace of the latter, who was either imaginary or duplex on a different unfound frequency as I later tuned around 40m.

Initial subject was whether glasses were half-full or half-empty. This really sounds like a one-way broadcast, just like you might hear on Radio República or Radio Martí. ARRL lookup shows N1NR is: ROIG, NELSON, N1NR (Extra), 41 PHEASANT RUN, BUSHKILL, PA 18324, Previous call sign: WQ3N. And W4NNN is: CARTER, ROBERT V, W4NNN (Extra), 2595 ABBEY RIDGE RD SW, CONYERS, GA 30094 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. V. of Mesopotamia has extended another hour on 11530 in 2009y, as predicted in Aoki, instead of closing at 1400, still going at 1456 check with ME singing, but audio breaking up. That quintuples its audible time after WYFR closes at 1345. This station is suspected of being pro-Commie, as Al Muick heard them playing the Internationale at another time. Presumably the other frequency via Ukraine, 7540, now opens at 1500 instead of 1400. Yes, sunsets are about to get later, but this is jumping the gun, propagationally (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** ALBANIA. R. Tirana has good strong signals but the modulation, I am sorry to say, is often awful and this was the case during some checks Dec 31:

7435, new frequency to Eu/NAm in Albanian, Dec 31 at 2130 very distorted, seemed like a public speech. 2208, 7435 during music also with degraded modulation.

6110, Albanian to NAm at 0018 Jan 1, terribly distorted audio and breaking up despite S9+20 signal, both music and talk. Something has to be done with their studio playback and/or studio-transmitter links, to get a clear good-fidelity signal on the air (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRIA. 6155 at 2148 Dec 31 with novelty song in German about his Weib, ending with `Oy Vey`, thrice! Hmmm, maybe it was Yiddish, and who says Austria is still anti-Semitic? Seems like a New Year`s Eve special show from a cabaret. One might have listened for Jahrwechsel at 2300 UT, except 6155 was off before 2200 in time for BBCWS hour in English.

7325 to NAm was still on at 0015 UT Jan 1, replaying the Jörg Heider retrospective I had heard earlier via Sackville. So maybe this was the final English transmission on SW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. CHU observations before, during, and after QSY from 7335 to 7850, Dec 31, 2008:

At 1850, 7335 still running as usual. 2138, 7335 is off and 7850 is not yet on. Keep monitoring the new frequency.

*2227, 7850 carrier comes on. 2235 recheck, has already started modulating with usual timesignals, and still including the frequency change announcements at :15 past each minute. Signal is equivalent to 7335, but NO interference, which around this time had been coming from Vatican. As I outpoint in DXLD, several other utilities have been reported on or around 7850, from France, Georgia, Israel, so, fingers crossed.

2359 monitoring for the leap second, also WWV on another receiver: I had previously synched my watch, so did not need to count the 61 seconds, but sure enough, the 0000 UT January 1, 2009 pip came one second later than 2359 and earlier. Not surprisingly, CHU and WWV were exactly synchronized in this.

This meant I had to miss BBCWS at yearchange, full chime of Big Ben, which used to be a tradition. But they don`t make it easy on SW, and there`s no point in listening to timesignal events on delayed webcasts. BBCWS had been coming in OK on 9570 via Thailand, discussing fireworx in Iceland at 2355 but after 0000 CRI relay via Albania was on 9570 as usual instead, so BBCWS probably was off before 0000 anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA [and non]. 6100, Dec 31 at 2150, RCI in French with a rippling SAH, so maybe a couple dekaHertz away, but no other modulation audible. Most likely de SERBIA [non], also in French during this semihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHAD [and non]. 4905 was active Dec 31, first noted at 2153 with French announcement, and had improved a lot by 2230, its normal sign-off, so decided to stay with RNT for the 2300 Jahrwechsel in the UT+1 zone. Was playing hilife music; 2254 announcement in French that 6 minutes were left, mixed with Arabic; 2257, `trois minutes` until the `nouvel an`, 2259 military band with lots of drumming right past 2300 with no timesignal; finally at 2300:30 to a speech in clearly enunciated French, by the leader? Still going at 2307, but 2309 military band again, 2310 announced the forthcoming `traduction en langue arabe` which lasted about as long; retuned at 2322 to hear the military band once again, probably the national anthem, and off at 2323*. Much better signal than grossly undermodulated Mauritania on 4845: big signal but barely audible with strumming at 2237 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [non]. 6145, Dec 31 at 2145 good signal with woman speaking Hungarian. I figured this was one of the few remaining R. Budapest broadcasts, but upon uplooking it, no, it`s CRI via France! How many other SW stations still broadcast in Hungarian? More than I had thought, according to the ADDX Ungarisch page: Vatican, TWR, Turkey, Croatia (R. Osijek relay), Russia, Serbia (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. DentroCuban Jamming Command, 11930, blows out a Bronx cheer to the world as it celebrates a semi-century of repression: Dec 31 at 2205 jamming pulses to which tones have now been added, despite being against nothing after R. Martí sign-off. BTW, Pres. Obama`s online advisors are voting on turning off Radio Martí permanently (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. R. Cairo monitoring NYE produced the usual frustrations: 6255, Dec 31 at 2156 during English to Europe, YL talking undermodulatedly; 2158 several seconds of ute beeps QRMing almost like a timesignal. Modulation got even lower, but I could tell she kept talking right thru local midnight 2200 as if nothing were happening.

I quickly retuned to the Arabic frequency 6290, which as if to overcompensate, was strongly and distortedly modulated with music, soon giving way to a 10-9-8+ countdown in English! And then a timesignal which was 33.5 seconds late. So R. Cairo misled countless Egyptians [and non] about when 2009y really began. Another surprise: immediately after the timesignal played a few bars of the ``Happy Birthday`` tune, but perhaps with different Arabic lyrix.

Back to 6255 at 2239; now playing Arabic music with good modulation; 2240 undermodulated YL with a heavy accent made a very quick English announcement so I could barely catch a word except ``49 meters``, right back to music, which had apparently been put on a mechanical pause button, because it restarted off-speed rather than cleanly. This continued until 2245, into usual post-transmission tone test.

6850, brief check of R. Cairo`s English to NAm, Dec 31 at 2350, S9+20 signal but talk just barely modulated. O, the futility! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. Sounds like the Greeks were having a NYE party too: VOG, 7475, Dec 31 at 2207 piano music punxuated by kazoo, sirens, the latter with an unfortunate connotation these weeks; different program on 7450 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUINEA [non]. During my NYE monitoring Dec 31, checked 7125 several times. At 2154 nothing there, no carrier audible. 2319 nothing there either altho Russia was audible this early previous days, and now Romania was making it on 7105. 2354 still nothing on 7125, but at 0016 Jan 1 Russia/Pridnestrovye had finally come on with rock beat music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. VON is another station which might have had a NY celebration at 2300 UT Dec 31; 7255 carrier was still on at 2259, but I had too much else to monitor at the same time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. My local KCRC 1390 Enid has an intermittent harmonic problem. Looking for NYE pirates, Dec 31 at 2314 instead heard distorted ad for Walgreens and ESPN Radio, on 6950, the fifth harmonic of // 1390. But it was gone at next check a few minutes later, nor heard on x 4 = 5560 where I recently had it too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 6175, Dec 31 at 2146 had Brother Scare mixing with something in French. B.S. is via Wertachtal, 100 kW, 300 degrees to W Europe at 21-22, while French is RFI, 500 kW, 204 degrees to W Africa at 21-22, but The Overcomer increases to 20-22 from Jan 1. No doubt some frequency managers rationalize this as a good share to different target areas even tho transmitted from adjacent countries. We can only hope that Brother Scare is getting the worst of the collision; the 5:1 power ratio should help (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. REE NYE monitoring: 9640, Dec 31 at 2211 talking about uvas gordas, rock classics in Spanish; also on // 7275 at 2227. For the 2300 Jahrwechsel, I was going to try to monitor this with one ear and Chad with the other, but 9640 went into sign-off announcement at 2255, saying we could keep listening on Intelsat (sorry, don`t have one handy), and would resume in 3 minutes on 6125, 9620, 11680 and 9535 to America. This hour from 2200 had also been to Africa on 5250, it sounded like they said, but must have meant 7270 per skeds. I then tuned to 6125 and found it already on the air with programming, but fluttery and much inferior to 9640 while 9535 was running the IS.

At 2300 could hear full strike of some clock on 6125. At 2320 I noticed that 7275 was still on the air, so maybe it was unimpeded at hourtop (yeartop) had I been listening to it; also audible on 9620 and better 9535 now with big band music, playing novelty song in Spanish, then sounded like an antique record with `boogie` lyrix, which I take not to be pure Castilian. 2327 ``Mambo Rock`` with English lyrix, 2336 a cowboy love song. 0005 UT Jan 1, 9535 still going with more novelty songs including mock-Hawaiian, Spike Jones? Hawaiian War Chant, 0010 Royal Victorian Calypso; 0020 still calypso, 0028 a cowboy yodel song in English. Mentioned several times that this show was from Radio 3, also on Radio 5 and REE until 3 am local, or was it 2 am. Some quite entertaining music, and not what you expect from Madrid (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UKRAINE. Wondering if RUI is still on the air in 2009? Jan 1 at 0014 good on 7440 in Ukrainian, but inaudible on 9785 if extra frequency to SAm is still airborne; could well be, usually above MUF (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WBCQ, 15420, Wed Dec 31 at 2220 with new WORLD OF RADIO 1441 in progress; very slightly off-frequency per BFO-stepping but nothing to het it. The 2000 broadcast on 7415 contained an old show from September; perhaps 1441 will appear this week on Thursday at 2000, as well as 0030 UT Friday on 7415 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. 6300, R. Nacional de la RASD, good in Spanish shortly after 2300 Dec 31, and at 2351 recheck during music; intermittent ute pulse QRM. Another one I wish I could have monitored at imminent Jahrwechsel, but trumped by a leap second. Where to find this in the WRTH 2009? Not under ALGERIA, MOROCCO, or WESTERN SAHARA in the domestic or international sexions, but on page 498 of C&OT under W (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5010, something there with lowly-modulated talk, Dec 31 at 2246. Suspect it was Madagascar on late, as the signal did not improve as it should have in the following hour if it were Dominican Republic. 2311 detectable but very poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** AUSTRALIA. RA still not making it on 9590, so have to try 7240 instead, UT Dec 31 at 1512, but an SSB ham was using RA as his precisely tuned BFO, which happens all too often, and would seem to be self-defeating as RA is also modulating both sidebands! Apparently, RA does not want to operate above 7300 so we`re stuck with these collisions (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRIA [and non]. Listening to the doomed SW broadcasts from here, 13730, Dec 31 at 1356 playing song in English ``There Are No Diamonds in the Mine``, then interview in German to 1400* with ID as O-E-Eins, not O-umlaut; meanwhile bothered by noises from what should be a silent carrier on 13740 as CRI relay via Habana was warming up.

Later caught what is presumably the final English SW broadcast from Austria, via Canada relay 13675, Dec 31 at 1650, all about the late Jörg Heider, to leave us with a bad taste. Sackville cut it off at 1659* sharp before the program was over, so no farewells to be heard!

If Moosbrunn SW transmissions really cease at yearend, and there does not seem to be any certain info about this, people looking for the Vienna New Year`s Concert will be disappointed. It should be live around 1000 UT Jan 1, when 6155 and 13730 have normally been on the air.

** CANADA. CFRX, 6070, Dec 30 at 0708 talkshow interviewing someone who had spent more than a year of solitude in Chilean Patagonia. This was a helluva lot more interesting than CVC Chile itself underneath with its gospel rock crap, and never anything about Chile. Yes, CFRX signal was way over CVC this time, tho when CFRX faded a bit, CVC came up by comparison. For a commercial CFRB show, went quite a while without ad break. Referred to website http://www.bobkull.com and the show was Best of Holder Tonight --- ``phones are being steam-cleaned while he`s away, so do not call``, ha ha.

But I copied it wrong, since that website goes to some guy in New Jersey, nothing about solitude in Patagonia, and he is on a book tour. The show site does not have any guest details either:

** CUBA [and non]. RHC English dumped off 6000 early, Dec 31 at 0654, while 6060 continued; but it uncovered Harold Camping on WYFR with a poor signal. Per FCC B-08, WYFR is scheduled on 6000 with the 50 kW transmitter at 181 degrees, 0500-1000, switching at 1000-1200 to 100 kW, 160 degrees. I must say I seldom notice QRM to RHC from WYFR on 6000, when they are colliding 0500-0700, but 6000 is not the best signal from RHC, 6060 and 6140 being much better (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. VOT, 12035, Dec 31 at 1404 ending a month-by-month chronology of 2008y news events, ``The New Year Special Program``; then various music. The Letterbox normally on Wednesdays never appeared. The Dec 30 broadcast previewed the first-half-of-2009 program schedule, delaying start of Live from Turkey. I hope they now have the program schedule somewhere on the website rather than making us wait weeks for it in the P-mail (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. More confusion from WRMI, 9955: the last I knew, AWR Wavescan was scheduled at 0630 UT Tuesday, but Dec 30 at 0655 I was hearing Spanish, La Rosa de Tokio hour-long DX program, at the moment mentioning LV de tu Conciencia, then wrapping up with credits; 0658 WRMI English ID, 0659 R. Prague relay in English. Jamming pulses of 3 per second but sounded different than usual, with modulated tones as well; then at least two transmitters out of sync. Lucky Czechia: at 0706 I was hearing another R. Prague relay on 6160, CBC Overnight via CKZN, no jamming.

The next night, UT Wed Dec 31, Wavescan appeared on 9955 at 0600, instead of 0615 Brigade 2506, and WORLD OF RADIO 1441 got its first airing at 0632 as scheduled; fair signal, some fading, good modulation, no jamming audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Streaming audio FRS

Dear FRS Friends,

Last Sunday's internet broadcast which would go out between 15.00-20.00 UTC had to be cancelled becauseof a technical problem. As we do not do the streaming ourselves, we were informed when it was too late to let you know.

Apologies for that! To make up FRS-Holland is right now on the internet (thanks to Jack!!):

Dec. 31st 09.00-14.00 plus again 14.00-19.00 CET.

Jan. 1st 09.00-14.00 plus again 14.00-19.00 CET.

So all in all the December 28th broadcast will be streamed no less than 4 times in very good audio quality.
