WEEK 501 from 2010 Aug 02
SOLAR ACTIVITY

Solar activity was rather low most of the week, until the appearance on the east limb of NOAA AR 1093 which produced a C1.3 flare on Aug. 5th (peak time 21:35 UT) and a M1 flare on Aug. 7 (peak time 18:24 UT), associated with a metric type II burst, an EUV coronal wave and a halo CME. A weak SEP event (< 5pfu at 10 MeV) occurred on Aug. 3rd from 15 UT till Aug. 4th 6UT. The source region was probably located to the north-west of NOAA AR 1092. Up to five active regions (with sunspots) were visible at the same time on the solar disk (Aug. 7).
GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY

Geomagnetic activity was dominated by a period of active to minor storm conditions related to the complex solar event of Aug. 1st involving two CMEs . A first shock, arrived at the Earth on Aug. 3rd just before 17:00 UT and triggered 12 hours of minor storm conditions at planetary levels (Kp of 5 and 6). The 2nd CME probably arrived on Aug. 4th around 10:00 UT when a signature of a magnetic cloud was detected by the ACE spacecraft. Active to minor storms conditions were still observed until Aug. 5th (03:00 UT).
