Glenn Hauser logs July 13-15, 2010

** ARGENTINA. 11710.8, RAE another station with severe modulation problems: July 15 at 0330, S9+20 with flutter, but just barely modulated, presumably scheduled French. Brazilians were in on 25m (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11815, July 15 at 0327 fair signal with Brazilian dialog, from R. Brasil Central. 11765 about same level with SRDA, wacky wailing gospel huxter David Miranda, but with ACI from Cuba 11760. And both totally eclipsed by big signal from RNA 11780. Also traces of Bandeirantes on 11925v, but blasted away by 11935 splash [see NETHERLANDS ANTILLES].

12175, July 15 at 0334, unstable distorted blob with hum vs CODAR, wailer David Miranda preaching again, and with some difficulty decided it`s // 11765 SRDA. But judging from previous Brasilian DX reports, the 12175 signal is a wandering spur from R. Globo, Rio, nominally 11805 as ZYE775, but unheard there, so rather a badly mistuned transmitter.

I have also been wanting to catch RNA 11780 sign-off time, or more likely abrupt cut-off. It was still going at 0335 but gone at next check 0355 July 15 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. Sackville appears to be making unexplained transmissions:

6100, UT July 15 at 0308, the RCI IS loop with English and French IDs is running, which should have finished with Spanish and signed off at 0305. (And is it colliding with YFR in English via Guiana French at 02-03 on 6100, as per EiBi?)

9625, July 15 at 0507 tune-in, continuous tone test; that`s right after the sign-off of CBCNQ service, so apparently the carrier stays on with tone, and likely the source of my previous obs of same tone much later, July 6 at 0623, as in DXLD 10-27 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake July 14:
14700, VP at 1235; poor at 1315
15570, poor at 1316 --- against what? V. of Tibet via Tajikistan is here at 1330-1430 per Aoki. No others found 8-18 MHz.

Firedrake bandscan July 15: none at all found 19-8 MHz between 1305 and 1310 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CROATIA [non]. 9925, V. of Croatia, July 15 at 0458 some enjoyable ethnic music, just before 0500 brief announcement in presumed Croatian, unusual timesignal consisting of three beeps spaced more than one second apart, and off the air. After overlapping with Wertachtal, the final two hours 0300-0500 are only via Nauen, east GERMANY site. On Sept 7, scheduled to resume 7375 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6150, RHC one more time in English instead of scheduled Spanish, July 15 at 0527 with music // 6060, 6010, 5970, while 6120 stayed in Spanish.

Crummy propagation on 19m, July 15 at 1302, RHC on 15120, 15360 and 15380 but only poor signals. Nevertheless, 15360 with whine also audible on plus and minus 50 kHz spurs, 15410 stronger than 15310 JBA with same pitch whine.

At 1305 check, 13680 was missing as often happens, while 13780 was good, but consequently no 13880 or 13580 leapfrog spurs possible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 9305, R. Cairo Arabic, July 15 at 0318, Qur`an, not too distorted! Good modulation level too. This frequency has been horribly distorted in past and probably future. 9305 is on 12 hours a day, 19-07 UT via Abis, 250 kW, 315 degrees for Europe and North America. 11590, meanwhile, Arabic via Abu Zabaal site, 250 kW, 330 degrees at 2300-0430 was just barely modulated (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ISRAEL [non]. 9955, WRMI relaying WRN relaying Israel Radio, July 15 at 0514 concluding news until next broadcast at ``12:30``, atop bubble and pulse jamming from Cuba, unlike before 0500 when R. Libertad is on. WRN then fills out the semihour with other stuff not on the online schedule, which misleads you to believe that Israel runs for the full 30 minutes:

0515 Pulse of the Planet, from NSF, 3-minute episode on wind turbines in southwest Minnesota; 0518 promo for CRI on WRN; jamming gaining and could not identify another fill feature at 0524.

WRMI has just expanded its WRN relay hours to UT:
Mon-Fri 0500-0830
Mon-Fri 0900-1100
Mon-Fri 1600-2100 [presumably webcast only, not 9955]
Tue-Sat 0200-0400
Sat/Sun 1600-2000 [including WORLD OF RADIO both days at 1730+]

To find out which stations are on at what times, consult
http://www.wrn.org/listeners/#wrn-english-north-america
and be sure you have the timezone cookie-set to UT or whatever you prefer (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 7395, July 15 at 0313, sufficient signal with NHK IS at an unexpected time, cannot be direct. 0315 into Swahili talk interrupted by frequent musical stingers. This is 250 kW, 320 degrees via MADAGASCAR, consequently USward too, 0315-0400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also NETHERLANDS ANTILLES

** LIBYA. V. of Africa`s English broadcast at 1400-1600 has moved from 21695 and 17725 to 15240 and 15235, as monitored by Wolfgang Büschel and Ivo Ivanov, and the 19m frequencies ought to propagate better, but inaudible here at 1550 check July 15. The old frequencies were aimed 180 degrees on 17725, 130 on 21695. Ivo says 15235 is the one now at 130 degrees, which ought to be superior here, closer to off-the-back (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS ANTILLES. 11935, NHKWNRJ in Japanese, July 15 at 0328, huge S9+25 signal and splattering from 11920 to 11950. Hard to believe this is Bonaire aimed 170 degrees away from us toward southern South America, 0200-0400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, KFXY back to usual southern gospel music, July 14 at 1241 UT check, after mostly open carrier for two days and substituting // KCRC 1390 sports talk another day (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WEWN back with three transmitters going, July 13 at 2021: 13830 and 12050 Spanish, 15610 plus spurs in English.

July 14 at 1312: 11550 and 12050 Spanish, 13835 English plus mushspurs above and below (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15385, KJES, July 14 at 1904 check, S9+12 carrier but JBA kidmod (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7506.3, July 15 at 0310, has to be WRNO as usual way off-frequency, VG signal not in Arabic, but English, sounds like an old Billy Graham black & white sermon with PA reverb, no doubt from a huge invisible stadium as was his tactic. Cited various Bible verses as if they were gospel (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9680, WYFR in English, July 15 at 0506 VG signal but going into distortion and splattering intermittently (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6940, mix of two audios, one with commercial in English, July 15 at 0525. As previously computed, this fits for leapfrog of WWCR 4840 over WWCR 5890, another 1050 kHz higher. Both of those were very strong, and 6940 could be heard at normal and attenuated positions, but not at local on the FRG-7, so in this case it may have been receiver-produced due to overload (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Pastor Pete Peters audio is awful, always with a rippling or warbling hum, as heard both via WWCR and WTWW, e.g. 1330 July 15 on 9980 and 9479. I guess some AC is getting into his feed. Fortunately, this helps to discourage people from listening to his racist nonsense despite the extremely strong signals from both (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN [and non]. 11625, VR, Thursday July 15 at 0331, African language, good S9+25 signal. Checked again at 0400, and another Afrolang, mentioning ``meter band`` and ``megahertz`` several times.

At 0331 did not sound like listed Swahili, but rather tonal. Maybe it`s the speaker`s own peculiar accent. Per VR A-10 schedule folder, it`s Swahili direct at 0330-0400, except Sundays inserting Somali at 0345.

The papists pull a fast one at 0400, switching site to MADAGASCAR, for Amharic/Tigrinya until 0430, but totally unclear how the time is divided between them, half-and-half? Or depending on day of week, or mixed in together? After French at 0430, back to SMG for English at 0500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. This summer`s sporadic-E VHF DX season has gone from almost daily openings, to less frequently as in mid-July we pass the peak --- but there should be some more, if we can catch them, thru mid-August.

No tipoff from WWCR 15825, JBA, but July 15 at 1337, 1356 I am getting occasional signs of skip on channel 2 in Spanish, maybe from Mexico, altho 6m Es map shows contacts between SE US as far as Oklahoma, and Cuba/Jamaica/Turks & Caicos. At 1535 what little I am getting on ch A2 seems from S rather than SE (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
