Moorside Edge transmitter maintenance - AM radio listeners in N England warned of disruption

Maintenance work at Northern England's main AM radio transmitter will mean some radio listeners will need to switch to digital.

Once-in-a-decade work on the Moorside Edge transmitter mast is due to start on Tuesday 29th May 2018. The transmitter mast broadcasts BBC Radio 5 Live (909kHz), Absolute Radio (1215kHz) and TalkSPORT (1089kHz) to AM radio listeners from Merseyside in the west across the Pennines to Yorkshire & Humber in the East, and includes Manchester and Leeds.

The maintenance work is scheduled to last up to twelve days, but is weather dependant. As a result radio services are subject to breaks in transmission between 9am and 5pm, or earlier at weekends.

As a result, affected listeners will need to switch to DAB digital radio or mobile apps on the go, and to DAB, Freeview, Sky, Virgin or smart home devices at home to continue listening to the affected broadcasts when the transmitter is off air. Some listeners may be able to continue listening on AM if they can receive transmissions from more distant transmitters.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 May 2018

Solar activity reached low levels during the period due to an

isolated C-class event, a C2 flare from Region 2712 (N13, L=172,

class/area Csp/80 on 24 May). No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached

moderate levels on 21-27 May.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled on 23 May due to

influence from a positive polarity, coronal hole high-speed stream

(CH HSS). Quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of

the period.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 28 MAY - 23 JUNE 2018

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the period,

with a slight chance for isolated C-class events on 28 May - 04 Jun

and 10-23 Jun, due to flare potential from Regions 2711 (N06, L=288,

class/area Cai/60 on 24 May) and 2712.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is

expected to reach very high levels on 05-07 Jun with high levels

expected on 02-04 Jun and 08-13 Jun. Moderate flux levels are

expected for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach G1 (Minor)

geomagnetic storm levels on 02 Jun with active levels on 01, and

03-04 Jun due to the influence of a recurrent, negative polarity CH

HSS. Unsettled levels are expected on 28-29 May and 05-06, 13, 19

Jun. Quiet conditions are expected during the remainder of the

outlook period.

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. The stream of KUCO-FM, our only classical music station, has been unlistenable lately, still running but with poor audio. I`d rather hear it direct on 90.1, but reception there is seldom solid noise-free, let alone during stereo music. KUCO tells me their old worn-out computer handling the streaming is going to be replaced. I also lobby for them to put a translator on in Enid.

Just when I have about given up on 9330v from WBCQ, check at 2345 UT Sunday May 27 finds WOR is back on! And like happened at least once before, May 10, mixing with Brother Scare whose audio has not been turned off! Total loss for everyone. This was also reported by Dave N4EF Grubbs. I thanked the boardops anyway for trying to run WOR.

I missed checking the 0130 UT Monday May 28 on WRMI 5850 & 7780; and the Sunday May 27 1900 on WRMI 9395. Did anyone hear those?

Confirmed UT Monday May 28 from 0301:30 on Area 51 via WBCQ 5129.8v, S9 vs noise level. It was slightly late because this time Larry inserted an off-topic clip of yours truly just before WOR, something amusing from long ago. Unfortunately, I was listening to WBCQ direct rather than webcast and could not fully recognize it.

Also confirmed the UT Monday May 28 0330 on WRMI 9955 when checked at 0356, good; unfortunately the ``RAE`` webcast of WRMI had quite degraded audio when checked first at 0350, and presumably also ruined the 0400 repeat of WOR on webcast only. Next:

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 update and 25 Forecast- Short and to the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 74.2 74.6 75.1

There had been 6 days in a row with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index number
(DSFI) of 70 or higher.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 27.

There had been 7 days in a row with a daily sunspot number (DSSN) of higher
than 0.

Sunspot group #12712 was located near N15E32 with a relatively simple beta
magnetic signature capable of releasing a very small in size B class solar
flare and an isolated small in size C class solar flare.

In 2018 there had been 80 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 0 1 1 0 1 1.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 371 &
305 km/s.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9+10-15 at night and S4-7
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+5-10 at night and
S5-8 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S1-3 at
night and S9+1 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S5-8 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1-3 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Radio Télévision Guinéenne new website

Radio Télévision Guinéenne [RTG], the government broadcaster in Guinea Republic (Conakry), now has a new quadrilingual website at www.rtgkoloma.info, streaming live radio and TV. The radio stream is observed identifying on air as 'Radio Guineé' and found to be in parallel with the shortwave outlet on 9650 kHz when checked via a Brazilian web SDR at 11:55 UT today (24 May 2018). The site gives options to view textual content in either Arabic, Chinese, English or French.

ETA: Observing the stream for the past few days it's apparent the station now broadcasts round the clock, with no sign-on/sign-off formalities at all at the former sign-on/sign-off times (0600 & 2400 UT/local time). A regular jingle with voice-over announcement in French states that they broadcast in French, English and local languages. No English programming observed by me so far.

edit 1: (im not sure how well the SSTV will work through AM due to phase issues caused by fade but i guess we will see)

edit 2: im currently having some slight power issues, line voltage has been dropping below 240VAC, down to 200VAC several times and hovering around 210VAC, seems to be an issue with the 7.2KV supply to the step-down transformer, kind of annoying watching the power fluctuate all over the place on the ACV-RMS needle meter.

** PHILIPPINES. 9275, May 27 at 1325, poor S2-S3 signal in Chinese, first day for FEBC ex-9380, and weaker than that had been, maybe just daily variation if on exactly same parameters as would be expected. Lowest 9 MHz frequency ever for Bocaue? Could be transmitter/antenna not tuning up optimally. 9380 now returned to AIR Aligarh exclusively, but nothing audible now, despite the scheduled 1200*-*1305 break being over (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UGANDA [non]. 9369.962, Sunday May 27 at 1326, new bigsig steady at S9+10 with African music, modulation slightly distorted, and occasional split-second dropouts; what in the world? Keeps going past 1400 with no announcements, let alone any ID. But it`s obviously WWRB reactivated on frequency last used for Brother Scare, and still registered available 13-24 UT, 100 kW at 45 degrees in English [sic], for CIRAF 4 and 9, i.e. Canada east of 90 degrees-west. Yeah, right where there are lots of Ugandans? This replaces 15240- which had not been heard for a few seeks, i.e. Radio Munansi. We had our doubts 15240 would reach Uganda, and even more so 9370 over a summer day-path, but it`s great into Oklahoma! Luganda talk finally starts at 1504. Music again at 1626 check. Note the offset of 9370- is very close to that of 15240- as previously measured. Presumably the only WWRB transmitter not demolished, so expect it Sat & Sun circa 1300-2100? ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1931 monitoring: confirmed after 0200 UT Sunday May 27 on WRMI 7780, S9/S9+10 but only fair vs storm crashes. Also confirmed UT Sun May 27 at 0346 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, good S9+20, at Algeria/Antarctica --- oh, oh, that was last week`s #1930, at 1:23 into the file, not latest 1931. And 1931 did not air earlier, as ARRL was still running at 0326. Maybe it aired later? Should have checked, as WA0RCR was off last week for Hamvention, and playing 1931 now may have been a make-up for that. Next:

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun May 27 at 0553, WTWW-2 is on with a talkshow, something new. Guest believes there are bases on the moon and aliens have visited earth. Could it be the Hoagland show revived? No. Host soon says he is on ``5085 and additional SW frequency tonight, 15815, which is just smoakin` in other countries, just blasting in``. (Not here! Nothing as you would expect in the nightmiddle on 19m from Tennessee; a different site, Bulgaria, maybe?).

Guest is named Glen and before ToH break program ID as `Southern Talk at Midnight` with Dave Lewis(?). 0559 commercial for CVS Pharmacy beauty club! Then to rambling ham radio ads by Ted until 0603 music; 0606:45 program resumes with guest Glen S-something who has a bunch of books to push, a longtime author about aliens around us. Again plugs 15815 & 5085, host address dave@wtww.us so this show may axually originate at WTWW. And gives phone for call-ins as 615-680-8028, as I tune out and go to sleep.

Nothing in HFCC on 15815, not WTWW, not Bulgaria, not anything. Off at 1627 check and I think considerably earlier. ** U S A. 15760, May 27 at 1627, here`s WHRI with special broadcast of the holy Indianapolis 500, during commercials with zoom SFX. Race was scheduled to start at *1619, an exercise in futility, round and round and getting nowhere; meanwhile drivers, crew and spectators risking death or injury, a great American tradition.

15760 is registered available 14-22 UT, Sat/Sun extended to 24, 250 kW, 315 degrees across the USA toward CIRAFs 2 & 3 = Canada west of 90 degrees. Not sure, but I don`t think they have been using it much if at all.
