Ivo Ivanov
QTH: Sofia, Bulgaria
Equipment: Sony ICF-2001D 30 m. long wire
Glenn Hauser logs June 28-29, 2016
** ALBANIA. 7465, June 28 at 1754 via the UTwente SDR, R. Tirana with folk music
which would have been quite nice were it not for the distortion and hum. Ivo
Ivanov, Bulgarian monitor, agrees that all the RT broadcasts to Europe are also
this way:
Radio Tirana with awful modulation, extreme distortion, June
25:
0700-0900 7390 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu Albanian Daily, relay
HS-1
1700-1730 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to SoEu Italian Mon-Sat
1730-1800
7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu French Mon-Sat
1931-2000 7465 SHI 100 kW /
310 deg to WeEu German Mon-Sat
2000-2030 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to U.K.
English Mon-Sat
(Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ARGENTINA. 15343.90, UT Sun June 29
at 0238, R. Nacional is still on in lilting Spanish at S3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** AUSTRIA. 9690.0, June 29 at 0254, choral South Asian
song at S5. It`s amid the AWR Urdu/Punjabi hour via Moosbrunn (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BRAZIL. 6059.780, June 28 at 0607, JBA carrier
here, in the absence of RHC English, doubtless SRDA Curitiba, which I had logged
on 6059.79 May 28. With very few exceptions, to be a ZY SW broadcaster, you
*must* transmit off-frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
**
BRAZIL. 11925.20, June 29 at 0244, Brazuguese talk from Rádio Bandeirantes,
which doesn`t drift but has been known to jump up closer to 11926 from its usual
spot (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BRAZIL. 11934.60, June 29
at 0244, music at S2, must be Rádio RB2, down from 11934.7 where Carlos
Gonçalves, Portugal had it on June 3 and 6; looking back, in May it was on
11934.8 and in March on 11934.9, so the trend is very slowly drifting downward.
I had found it missing on June 20.
Same behaviour as their ``9725``
outlet, which had drifted down as low as 9722.97 where I logged it last Nov 20
before it got bumped back up to relatively stable 9724.9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** BURUNDI [non]. 15480, June 28 at 1801, via UTwente
remote, African music at good level, 1804 talk in presumed Kirundi, from Radio
Publique Africaine, via FRANCE. With abysmal solar flux, this is the only way I
am going to hear it; not even a carrier here as I have checked numerous dates
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 6060, June 28 at 0607,
RHC English is off this frequency; still on 6100 & 6165 undermodulated as
usual. But opening up channel for off-frequency BRAZIL, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA [non]. 9490, June 29 at 0257, R. República
at S9+25 over wall-of-noise jamming which contributes to the S-reading, talking
about Libertad, then ID and addressing ``hermanos y hermanas en Cuba`` to
promote some event or broadcast on domingo. Via FRANCE, Aoki and EiBi show the
span as 01-05 UT; HFCC as 0000-0259 in three hourly segments. I`ve heard them
later than 0300 on occasion, but not as late as 0500; perhaps they are flexible.
I`ve not caught them signing on or off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA SOUTH. 15575, Sat June 28 at 1300, KBS World Radio has a
poor-fair signal so maybe I will be able to hear the final Indian DX Report
later in the hour (as KBS has cancelled the DX segments on Listeners Lounge as
of mid-July) --- but by 1333 and 1344 it`s only S4 and unreadable (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6874.70-AM, June 29 at 0229,
weak music at S7 vs noise peaks of S9+10. Earlier in the hour and later there
were reports of unID or CPR on 6875-USB, so presumably this is separate:
(Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA. 1640, June 28 at 1239 UT,
KZLS Enid/Hennessey/OKC is still off the air; and still still at 0048, 0310 and
0441 chex June 29 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA.
It`s Field Day! So I make a cursory check of the HF hambands, June 28 from 1936.
Nothing on 18 or 21 MHz, so no point in even trying 24 or 28. 14 MHz has a lot
of signals, but all weak during awful propagation conditions. 3 MHz has no
signals at all, at midday. That leaves 7 MHz, which does bear a lot of FD
activity, mostly weak too, except for: W5HTK, Enid Amateur Radio Club, S9+60,
stronger than any SW broadcasters by skywave reach here, since it`s only a few
blox away? Or in a Field a bit further. Keeps QSYing, calling CQ Field Day, from
1934 on LSB: 7201, 7204, 7207, 7219, 7239 by 1943. Arcane alfnumerix are uttered
to successful contacts: ``6-alfa-oklahoma``, such as on the latterest, with
N0ZS, who replies, ``2-alfa-Missouri``.
The Enid ARC website http://www.enidarc.org bears nothing at all to
promote Field Day, not even on its calendar, but rather: ``The ETN Community
Spotlight proudly presents The Enid Amateur Radio Club``
A
segment on the local cable-access channel usurped by Enid city government from
the late lamented Pegasys.
After dark, UT June 29 around 0241, I find
both 20m and 40m are crammed with Fieldayers, as this is also a contest (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** PALAU. 9965.043, June 28 at 1225,
Brother Scare is not only off his rocker but off his T8WH frequency. Says his
86th birthday will be May 3, 2019, and so the world will then be ready for
second coming of J.C. six months later. Yeah, right (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** SPAIN. 17855, June 28 at 1925, no signal from REE,
so seems the North American beam is gone again, and on a sportive Saturday, no
less. Propagation is awful, with solar flux of only 77, but I do detect a
carrier on 17715 which would be Spain to elsewhere, always much weaker than
17855 when latter is operative (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
**
U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1831 monitoring: NOT confirmed, Saturday June 28 at 1430
on Hamburger Lokalradio, 7265-CUSB via the UTwente remote, where it is usually
audible. Nothing before 1430 either from Media Network Plus, where at the end I
provide some two minutes of propagation info unlike on WOR. Further chex during
semi-hour to 1501, no signals at all, nor from CRI. But the band noise must mean
the receiver is funxional. And I later get other stuff on it.
WOR 1831
confirmed Sat June 28 after 2230 on WBCQ 9330v-CUSB, just barely audible. Also
confirmed on WA0RCR, 1860.02-AM, UT Sun June 29 at 0314 already underway about
the Ascension stamps, so started about 0312, S9 and so is the storm noise level
at least, but no pileup or encroachments by Field Day contesters on this band?

** U S A. 15240, Sat June 28 at 1645, WWRB fair
signal with African hilife music; 1659 no ID, 1701 into presumed Ugandan
national anthem, and then choral theme music past 1705 mentioning Uganda, so
presumed Radio Munansi, still at 17-19 UT on Sat, altho last Sun I was hearing
Luganda(?) talk before 1700. There is still not a word about this broadcast on
the WWRB website (nor any current program schedule). Nor anything about being on
WWRB at http://radiomunansi.com which
doesn`t present any recent news, but alleges that it podcasts. I have now added
15240 to the BSR-1 caradio memory for easy checking (or maybe Radio Australia
after 2100) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 11240,
June 28 at 1231, JBA carrier with traces of talk. Not listed by Aoki as a Sound
of Hope frequency, so I subtract 1390 from it to see what I get: 9850 ---
therefore, an external mixing product overloading the R-75 between powerful RHC
and local blaster KCRC. I should have compared to audio of those two if I had
figured this out in time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Propagation News – 26 June 2016
Once again the sun looks pretty spotless, apart from one tiny smudge. As a
result, this week saw the solar flux index drop below 80. We’re beginning to
sound like a stuck record, but ongoing coronal hole activity pushed the K-index
to five on Wednesday 22nd. Noisy electrical storms across most of northern
Europe didn’t help the bands either.
Next week the USAF predicts the
solar flux index will be in the range 70-80, with the potential for unsettled
geomagnetic conditions on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday, 3 July. As the solar flux
index at sunspot minimum doesn’t fall below about 66, this gives you some idea
of the current state of the sun.
As it is mid-summer we can’t expect
fantastic HF conditions either, with lower maximum usable frequencies during the
day, compared with the autumn and winter, but higher MUFs at night.
If you want a challenge, try
listening for the Alexanderson alternator at station SAQ in Grimeton, Sweden on
17.2kHz CW at 0900 and 1200UTC on Sunday, 3 July. The Twente SDR on the web can
cover 17.2kHz, or you can hook an antenna up to your sound card and use some
specialist software. Amateur station SK6SAQ will also be active on 80m SSB and
40, 20 and 15m CW during the day.
VHF and up propagation
news:
Sporadic-E may be poorer next week
as the main Atlantic jet stream activity has already migrated north, leaving
much of central Europe under a much slacker pattern. The absence of active jet
streams over Europe probably means that one of the main sporadic E triggers,
gravity waves, may be missing or reduced. These waves propagate up from the
turbulence of the jet stream at 12km height to the E region at 120km.
This absence will make sporadic E
hard to come by except perhaps for the more northern paths across to Scandinavia
where the jet stream may be slightly more active.
Next week we will find a big high
with a very large east-west extent just north of the Azores and covering much of
the Atlantic. This could give some interesting tropo paths down the western side
of Europe from the UK to Spain and Portugal and onwards to the Canaries or Cape
Verde.
It may also be a tempting week for
those seeking the more unlikely options of transatlantic tropo. This is very
much a long shot, since there are fronts involved which can easily break any
ducts.
Moon declination goes positive on Monday and losses are falling
with perigee on Friday, so EME conditions will improve as the week
progresses.

RNZI moves to a one-transmitter operation
Information for individual analogue short-wave listeners in the Pacific
region.
RNZ International (RNZI) is
retiring its 27-year-old analogue-only short-wave transmitter and moving to a
one-transmitter operation.
From 1 July 2016 we will be
using our newer digital/analogue transmitter and swapping between its digital
short-wave and analogue short-wave modes throughout each day.
The digital short-wave mode
delivers a signal to relaying Pacific stations, and the analogue short-wave mode
reaches individual short-wave list eners.
RNZI has made the decision not
to replace the old short-wave transmitter, but to instead maximize the
flexibility of our newer short-wave transmitter by using either its analogue or
digital mode to deliver to different audiences at different times of the
day.
We are also focusing on
broadening the options for delivering our signal to relaying radio stations.
These stations broadcast our daily news and current affairs content over their
own local stations - and allow us to reach a large local Pacific audience.
By working with partners like
the BBC World Service (Pacific stream) and Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting
Limited (PCBL) (which includes the former TVNZ satellite service) we've been
extending our content delivery via satellite. We'll be continuing to focus on
this as a complimentary delivery to the DRM dig ital short-wave service.
RNZI's online content and delivery, partnerships and use of our
specialist content by individuals, media and organisations in the Pacific and
worldwide, is also growing.
The move to a one-transmitter
operation will result in a reduced service to current individual short-wave
listeners in the region. RNZI will still broadcast in analogue short-wave for
extensive periods of each day, but there won't be a 24 hour service as there has
been. This is likely to be most felt during breakfast hours when we will need to
broadcast a digital signal for relaying stations, rather than an analogue
one.
However, RNZI remains committed
towards providing an analogue short-wave service for individual listeners across
the Pacific. Our role in warning about, and covering, cyclones remains
especially important. During cyclone season, RNZI has the flexibilit y to choose
to broadcast entirely in analogue if we need to temporarily provide a fulltime
service to individual listeners.
Over time we hope more individuals will be able to access our content
online access the region. Online use of RNZI is growing quickly with Pacific
visitors and others now increasingly accessing content on the RNZI site.
And in future years, as
stations adopt other ways of receiving our signal, we may be able to devote more
of our short-wave transmission capacity back into broadcasting in
analogue.
With a mix of analogue
short-wave, digital DRM short-wave, satellite, partnerships and online content
delivery, we remain in a solid position to deliver our unique Pacific content to
audiences in the region and beyond.
Our analogue and digital
frequency schedule is available at www.rnzi.com along with with updated
broadcast times.

Glenn Hauser logs June 23-24, 2016
** ALBANIA. 9854.95, June 24 at 0124, R. Tirana is still suffering from extreme
dysfunxion: hum-roar making the IS barely audible underneath. 0130 sign-on
completely unreadable, and still the same at 0148. This Shijak signal is only
S5, while over at Cërrik, the Chinese are putting out S9+30 clearly modulated,
for the CRI English relay on 9570 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** ARGENTINA. 11711.97, June 24 at 0121, JBA carrier here but
nothing on 11710.6 to 11710.7, usual area for RAE, so is this it? Nor anything
on 15344v, and shortly 11711.97 is gone too. Still nothing at 0210 final check
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BOLIVIA. 6024.95, June 24 at
0141, JBA carrier, and a trace of talk modulation, presumed Red Patria Nueva
(ever ID as Radio Illimani any more?). Last time I logged this, June 6, I typoed
as 6035.95, and tho corrected ASAP, still got quoted wrongly somewhere. So this
time I am sure to digit it accurately (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** BOLIVIA. 6134.8, June 24 at 0207, carrier still here from
presumed Radio Santa Cruz, but underneath motorboating noise I was not getting
during previous hour. I fear it`s from RSC itself; also I think there is a JBA
carrier on the hi side, 6135.1 or .2 which would be R. Aparecida, Brasil (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BRAZIL. 11815.0, June 24 at 0123,
song at S2, presumed R. Brasil Central, still reactivated. Wish it could achieve
a better signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 1620,
June 24 at 0152, Spanish music, but not // R. Rebelde 5025, which is sports
talk, maybe during a silly BB game. That causes the 1620 outlet to switch feed
to the FM network, confirmed at 0155 ID as ``La FM Rebelde cadena grande``, pop
``música viva``. Other Rebeldes on MW, 670 and 1180 remain // 5025 (Glenn

** CUBA. 15370, June 23 at 1819,
surprised to find RHC on the air at this hour, speech in Spanish about FARC,
weaker than // 11760 which is normally the only one at this hour. Then look for
more and find 17730 also with this at S9+10. None heard on 13 or 9 MHz bands. No
doubt prompted by today`s peace accord in Habana as explained here:
``The
accord agreed today, for "A Bilateral and Definitive Ceasefire, Cessation of
Hostilities, and Laying Aside of Weapons," closes the fifth of five substantive
items on the FARC-government negotiating agenda. It sets out a roadmap for
disarming and demobilizing the FARC after a final peace accord is signed. It
foresees a swift process: a full turnover of guerrilla weapons within six
months. . .``

** EGYPT. 12084.94, June 24 at 0159, R. Cairo
Arabic has just come on with ME music, and not too distorted!! This will run for
five hours to North America. The English frequency, 9315 is quite weak, and the
other Arabic on 9965v is moderate, undermodulated. Also had a very weak signal
on 9745 before 0200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GUYANA.
3289.97, June 24 at 0146, JBA carrier vs the S9+10 storm noise level, so whew,
V. of Guyana appears still to be active. Peregrinating engineer Jaime Labadia,
now in Fresno, asks Ron Howard, "Ron, I don't suppose you're able to hear the
Voice of Guyana on 3.290 mc/s? (Only 1.2 k.w. for now, and antenna broadside
N.E. / S.W.)". No wonder the signal is so poor here to the northwest (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MADAGASCAR. 6190, June 24 at 0209,
MWV La Voz Alegre has managed to keep the transmitter on longer tonight, with
secular-sounding pop music, about equal to the S9+10 noise level (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6924.99-AM, June 24 at 0104,
only trace on the pirate band is a JBA carrier here which with storm noise level
(SE KS and SW MO) amounts to S9+10; still going past 0137 with some talk
modulation audible. If it`s the same station many heard
starting
at 2224 June 23 (NOT June 22: initial post subject had wrong date!), and as late
as 0127, it was eventually relay of an FM pirate Radio Free Olympia (Glenn

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1390, June 23 at
0528 UT, first on a non-DX radio I notice praise music in Spanish on 1380,
obviously KRCM Shenandoah TX, R. Aleluya, still throwing its 22 kW day power
toward us at night, as always --- but no need to avoid splash from local 1390
KCRC --- that`s because KCRC is off! And along with 1390, the nasty spurs
perpetually putting hets on 1420 and 1360. Very unusual for KCRC, instead of NSP
= non-stop programming/no silent period (remember those?). So I concentrate on
DXing something on 1390 itself from 0530 UT to 0550 UT, but nothing ever emerges
above the pileup and even some splash from KRCM. Except with BFO I do detect one
signal very slightly on the hi side of 1390, roughly E/W. Maybe better at SRS?
Reawake at 1127 UT there is something with a bit of an edge in English talk, but
still uncopiable. By 1155 recheck, KCRC is finally back, blasting ESPN (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1640, June 24
at 0150 UT, as the sun is setting, it`s time to check the X-band, to find that
local KZLS Enid-Hennessey-OKC is OFF; instead some silly sports talk about NBA
draft, obviously WTNI Biloxi MS, which I cannot believe is not always running 10
kW ND day power, as I can hear it even when KZLS is on, underneath, and
generally better than the other 1 kW X-banders at night. KZLS is sibling station
to KCRC 1390 which was off the air night before (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** TAIWAN [and non]. 11070 & 11100 & 11470,
June 23 at 1225-1230, JBA carriers slightly off-frequency, presumed Sound of

June 23 at 2327 tune in WBCQ The Planet webcast to check out `Broad Spectrum
Radio`, but instead it`s `Camp Constitution Radio`, wrapping up at 2329 with
claim that it`s still airing Mondays at 2330 --- and maybe it is, just plugged
in now to fill for BSR. At 2330, BSR does start an episode of `Exploring
Aspergia`. So was this an anomaly, or BSR reduced from two semihours to one?

0117, WTWW-1 is S9+30 open carrier/dead air, still past 0127 so no passé Pastor
Pete Peters tonight. Recheck at QSY time 0200: suddenly starts modulating with
first dekaword of Ted`s canned ID ``Broadcasting from the banks of of the Upper
Cumberland River, this ---`` and cut off. In less than a semiminute comes up on
5830, but resumes unmodulation past 0206. Wake up, Ted. Changing frequency
accomplished but not noticing something is missing! Also missing completely:
12105, no signal from WTWW-3 at 0124 check. 5085, WTWW-2 is still on weeknights
after 0400 June 24, for `Midnight [sic] in the Desert`.
Mike Barraclough
forwards this post about a visit to WTWW by someone who was unduly impressed by

strong for that, nor jamming. Instead suspect it`s a test from Greenville which

on 6739.0-USB, June 24 at 0203, S9+30 during long alfanumeric message, which he
then says again, so I copy it completely, as given in fonetix without pauses or
