Berna, 26.08.2009 - Oggi il Consiglio federale ha deciso di mettere fuori servizio il trasmettitore del segnale orario HBG di Prangins (VD) per la fine del 2011. Il trasmettitore è gestito dall'Ufficio federale di metrologia (METAS), l'istituto nazionale di metrologia.

Dal 1966 il trasmettitore a onde lunghe di Prangins emette segnali orari ufficiali a una frequenza di 75 kHz abbinati all'ora mondiale coordinata. Le informazioni orarie, che sono sincronizzate con un orologio atomico, possono essere impiegate per il controllo di orologi radio e di apparecchiature tecniche. L'emettitore è operativo 24 ore su 24. I segnali orari rappresentano un servizio pubblico gratuito. Il trasmettitore è stato gestito da PTT e fino a maggio 2000 da Swisscom. Successivamente la gestione è passata nelle mani dell'Ufficio federale di metrologia (METAS).

I lavori di manutenzione periodici all'impianto di trasmissione hanno messo in evidenza diversi punti di usura sulle antenne. Dalle perizie effettuate da specialisti indipendenti è emerso che un mancato risanamento delle strutture comprometterebbe in maniera inammissibile la sicurezza e comporterebbe l'interruzione dell'esercizio del trasmettitore.

Il mantenimento in funzione del trasmettitore, attraverso un intervento di risanamento, ha costi elevati che non potrebbero essere compensati dall'attuale impiego ridotto dell'impianto, come è emerso da uno studio esterno che ha anche verificato se il trasmettitore a onde lunghe potesse essere utilizzato per altri scopi o se la sua gestione potesse essere rilevata da altri enti. L'esito negativo di tali verifiche ha portato a decidere la messa fuori servizio dell'impianto per la fine del 2011.

La decisione è stata presa con anticipo per lasciare agli utenti il tempo necessario per sintonizzarsi sul segnale del trasmettitore tedesco DCF77, che ha una qualità di ricezione in Svizzera pari a quella del trasmettitore di Prangins. Oltre ai circa 3600 utenti istituzionali tra chiese e scuole, vi sono anche alcuni apparecchi riceventi come radiosveglie o ricevitori di informazioni meteo che sfruttano i segnali HBG. Molti di questi apparecchi sono dotati di ricevitori compatibili con il trasmettitore tedesco DCF77 e potranno quindi continuare a funzionare senza problemi. La maggioranza dei apparecchi sul mercato è ormai compatibile solo con il trasmettitore tedesco; ciò vale per quasi tutti gli orologi da polso radiocontrollati.

L'ora ufficiale svizzera continuerà ad essere trasmessa da METAS. Sarà inoltre messo a disposizione un server per l'ora (ntp.metas.ch) grazie al quale sarà possibile sincronizzare l'ora dei computer con la scala svizzera del tempo. METAS è l'istituto a cui compete la gestione e la diffusione delle unità di misura in Svizzera, tra cui anche l'unità del tempo, il secondo. Tra i suoi compiti rientrano anche l'individuazione e la diffusione dell'ora ufficiale svizzera. Fino alla messa fuori servizio a fine 2011 sarà METAS a gestire il trasmettitore del segnale orario HBG di Prangins (VD).

** ALBANIA. 13640, R. Tirana, Sept 2 at 2022, good signal and modulation with music, outro announcement, theme music and off at 2027:30*. Wish I had intuned at hourtop to hear the whole transmission starting with spoken material. This is the ONLY SW broadcast in English from Europe intentionally for North America at this hour, and R. Tirana deserves our support for it.

In fact, the only other English broadcast to NAm from anywhere outside NAm at this hour is the seldom-audible Kuwait on 11990; axually both Tirana and Kuwait simultaneously serve Europe as they can do from their angles, but NAm is officially targeted too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. All my logs the last several days have been despite a high local noise level, which was especially a problem on 49m, Sept 2 at 2016, when the only signals I could detect were from the secret daytime transmission of RHC on 5965 and 6000, an echo apart from // 11760. Did not hear CFRX 6070 that I soon learned from Steve Lare had resumed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SWEDEN [non]. 11875, Sept 2 at 2001 with Horn of Africa singing, fair signal but suffering splash from much stronger DW 11865 English via Portugal. 2003 announcement in unID language and continued speaking with the self-confidence of a gospel huxter. Aoki has the answer: it`s IBRA Radio, 250 kW, 169 degrees via Rampisham UK, in the Zarma language (no wonder I didn`t recognize it), on Wed/Thu/Fri, while during the same quarter-hour on Mon/Tue it`s in Fon, Sat/Sun in Wolof. says Zarma and Fon are spoken in West Africa, and Wolof in Senegal specifically, so HOA does not fit; perhaps I need to refine my recognition of that music, or has there been some change? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 11810, BBCWS at 2006 Sept 2 ending news and into Newshour, fair signal and another option for deprived North Americans, tho it`s 65 degrees from Ascension for Africa. But at next check, 2050, about equal mix with another station in English! Soon clearly RRI as talking about Romania in mailbag, 2052 RRI ID and Sports Club. The two are making a very slow SAH of less than 1 Hz, or could just be propagational fading. RRI off at 2057:25* after IS a few times; BBC off at 2059:35*.

Even a year ago, PWBR knew that RRI was using 11810 during this semi-hour in the A (``S``) season, so why didn`t BBC know? They probably did, but figured a half-hour collision in this two-sesquihour transmission does not matter as the target areas are widely divergent, RRI at 300 degrees for Europe, and who cares about overhearers beyond? ** U S A [and non]. 11855, Sept 2 at 1949 with very undermodulated music, soon recognized as VTC`s music loop fill of guitar with accompaniment. 1952, no it`s not undermodulated, it was just buried under a strong open carrier, which just went off! The carrier came back on at 1959, revealing itself as WYFR signing on in Spanish. Then the VTC music disappeared and WYFR was alone. But checked later in the hour a Portuguese broadcast was atop WYFR. Here`s what must have been happening:

YFR has 11855 tied up, at 18-19 in Arabic via Wertachtal, scheduled at 19-20 in Yoruba via Ascension but that feed was missing so VTC put in the music fill, in effect YFR interfering with itself. At 20-02 WYFR Okeechobee itself in Spanish. The Portuguese around 2045 was BBC via Ascension again, 2030-2100 M-F only, to southern Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 15730, Sept 2 at 2011 with C&W song in English, so likely VOA: yes, but it`s the French to Africa service, as following announcement was in French; 100 kW, 76 degrees via São Tomé. While 2000-2030 is daily, on Sat & Sun 15730 is extended until 2100 but switching to Greenville at 2030. Meanwhile, Greenville 17895 with VOA in English to Africa, better signal at 2013 with The African Beat (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Svizzera, Swiss Radio Day 2009: annunciata l'era digitale

Le radio svizzere si sono ritrovate per il decimo anno consecutivo, lo scorso 27 agosto al World Trade Center di Zurigo, al tradizionale Swiss Radio Day. Ne dà conto il portale di Swisscom Bluewin.ch, dal quale riportiamo la notizia per intero. "L'evento 2009 è stato arricchito dagli interventi di molti personaggi di spicco del mondo radiofonico e digitale, anche provenienti dall'estero come Raïna Konstantinova, Director of the Radio Department at the European Broadcasting Union; Lutz Kukuck, responsabile della tedesca Radiozentrale GmbH; Thomas M. Stein, produttore musicale tedesco e il professore alla Harvard University Urs Gasser. Sull'incombente "Era radiofonica digitale" hanno referenziato il direttore dell'Ufficio federale delle comunicazioni (UFCOM) Dr. Martin Dumermuth e il CEO dell'istituto Gottlieb Duttweiler, David Bosshart. Dal direttore della Radio Svizzera DRS, Walter Rüegg, è stata annunciata l'introduzione della diffusione digitale DAB dal prossimo 15 ottobre, piattaforma che sarà disponibile anche per le radio private locali. In tutti gli interventi è stato toccato il tema web. Tutti hanno rilevato come internet sia sempre più fondamentale nella comunicazione moderna. È stato anche illustrato come viene utilizzato dai cosiddetti "digital natives", cioè da quella generazione nata negli anni '80, ma in ogni caso la radio saprà sopravvivere. Ovvio. Non è mancata una voce molto critica, Thomas M. Stein, grande produttore musicale tedesco, ha invitato le radio ad una maggiore sensibilità nelle scelte musicali, invitandole a usare criteri più artistici e meno commerciali e ad una maggiore collaborazione con i cosiddetti "creativi", bella la sua sfida: "Provate ad immaginare due giorni di radio completamente senza musica …". I riconoscimenti 2009 sono stati valutati da Swiss Radio Day in collaborazione con la IGEM (Interessengemeinschaft elektronische Medien, l'associazione riunisce tutte le maggiori agenzie media, i più importanti distributori e mediatori svizzeri del settore radio, tv e internet come pure istituti di ricerca di mercato) in base alla crescita registrata dal 2001 al 2009. In questo periodo di otto anni, DRS Virus, radio della Svizzera tedesca dedicata ad un pubblico giovane, ha incrementato del 145% i suoi ascoltatori, mentre la ticinese Radio 3iii è riuscita nell'impresa di aumentare i suoi ascolti del 94%. Alla manifestazione sono stati consegnati i riconoscimenti "Le migliori radio svizzere pubbliche e private dell'anno 2009". I premi sono andati a DRS Virus per la Svizzera tedesca e alla privata di lingua italiana Radio 3iii. Scoppiettanti gioia, Filippo Lombardi, attuale amministratore delegato, e Silvio Eduard Baumgartner, fondatore di Radio 3iii, hanno ritirato l'ambito premio. Un raggiante Filippo Lombardi ha dichiarato: "È una grossa soddisfazione portare a casa questo premio. Siamo i primi della Svizzera latina e secondi assoluti a livello svizzero. L'interessante è che prendendo in considerazione un periodo di 8 anni si vede molto bene come la crescita di Radio 3iii è stata costante".  L'emittente, che oggi conta 20 collaboratori, è nata a Mendrisio nel 1987 per iniziativa dell'imprenditore ticinese Silvio Baumgartner. È stata ceduta dopo 20 anni di trasmissioni e dal gennaio 2007 fa parte del gruppo TeleTicino; dall'aprile dello stesso anno trasmette dagli studi di Melide, in perfetta stereofonia sulle modulazioni di frequenza 106.5 FM e 96.5 FM, come pure via cavo Cablecom e sulla rete Swisscom Bluewin TV. Instead of Saturday mornings on webcasts, still seems strange to hear Stuart McLean storytelling on Vinyl Café in the middle of the night on SW, UT Wed Sept 2 at 0624 on CKZU 6160, fair signal, into a song. This is the repeat on the CBC Radio One schedule at 11:05 pm local Tuesdays; in fact, V.C. worx in so many repeats without flagging them as such that we kept saying ``heard that before`` and quit listening every Saturday morning. A new CBC season should now be getting underway, but that`s still no guarantee of new stuff on this series. Even on a `new` show, he re-tells old favorite stories. Weak het at this time from CKZN 6160.9 rather than equal signals fighting it out (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake Sept 2: at 1300 on 8400 good signal going to top-of-hour open carrier monitoring pause; 1310 just barely audible on 9000. 1329 fair on 13970, better at 1407. 1334 audible but very poor on new 15200 // 13970; tnx to Ron Howard for spotting 15200 at a totally different time, 0213. At 1406, 15200 a bit better here. No others heard up to 19 MHz. BTW, Hiroshi and S. Hasegawa explain to DXLD that if you hear non // Firedrake frequencies, it`s really the same music, but started 6 minutes apart (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. Surprised to hear Chinese lessons presented in English, Sept 2 at 1403, subject being money, on 15220, CRI via Sackville. No news on the hour? Wait a minute, this hour is not in English at all, but Chinese, which resumed 1405 at full speed, tho pronouncing an URL in English, hyfci.cn ? That appears to be valid but I don`t have Chinese characters installed. Anyhow, why are they teaching Chinese in English on a Chinese broadcast, where the only people listening would already speak Chinese? Duh.

Another anomaly: no signal on 13740, the usual CRI English relay via CUBA, Sept 2 at 1408.

11615, Sept 2 at 1420 soft Asian songs, G signal with flutter, not listed in PWBR `2009`; 1427 into commercials in Chinese. Scheduled here is VOA Chinese via Saipan at 310 degrees, but I must have been hearing the ChiCom CNR1 jamming instead, as a*terisked by Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also EAST TURKISTAN

** CUBA. RHC still not in English at 2030-2130; Sept 1 at 2122 check, 17660, 13790, 13760, 11770, 11760 all // in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 13610, CRI in English, very poor signal, Sept 2 at 1330, about two seconds behind CRI via Sackville, so is the site even further from Beijing? No, 13610 is Kashgar during this hour, 308 degrees toward Europe. How does the signal get to Sackville and Enid so much more quickly? The route to Kashgar must be more complex than a one-hop satellite feed, with the usual proviso that anything digital in the chain may introduce additional delays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. We can depend on XEPPM, R. Educación for a great variety of music on 6185. Sept 2 at 0622 it was Ray Charles, ``Unchain My Heart``, fair signal in the clear now with no co- or adjacent-channel QRM, unlike before 0600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MOROCCO [and non]. 15345, Sept 1 at 2124, Arabic on top, but fast SAH, which means RAE Argentina managed to match within 15 Hz or so (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RWANDA [and non]. 16 metres was just opening up Sept 2 at 1337 with DW Hausa via Kigali 17800 inbooming tnx to 310 degree azimuth also usward, and the only other big signal 17595 from REE Noblejas, Spain. No Chile 17680. After 1400 things had normalized with 17680 and the other usual signals audiblized (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. DRM test from Greenville still just barely audible on 15470-15475-15480, Sept 1 at 2124 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WEWN`s perpetual problem of noisy spurs and mixing products must not be ignored, so I report them periodically: Sept 2 at 1321 the two fundamentals are 11530 in English and 11550 in Spanish. Leapfrog mixing product on 11510 from 11550 over 11530, but did not hear a match on 11570. 11530 has the dirty squealy extremely distorted parasites plus and minus 10 kHz, which may or may not beat with legitimate occupants of neighboring frequencies. 11520 was obvious without BFO, while 11540 required BFO. Presumably the same spurry transmitter does this too elsewhen from 15610 to 15600 and 15620. Among the victims is WYFR on 11520 and 15600, Marian cultists vs Camping cultists (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 13927-USB, AF MARS net, at 2125 Sept 1, including AFA9AY and Doom01, arranging phone patch to Shirley in the 239 area code; gave her complete number in the clear, and altho it is now known worldwide I refrain from reporting it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 8992-SSB, YL reading numbers mixed with fonetik letters, clear and steady pace, Sept 2 at 1313. There is a certain depth to her voice, a slight reverb, which I suspect is transmitted that way, rather than resulting from backscatter or some other multi-path, as it is usually the case, also on other frequencies. Went on and on and on, until finally at 1318, ``this concludes message of 291 characters; Andrews, out``. That is, Andrews AFB near Washington DC. Now all the other AFBs are decoding no doubt top-secret national security info (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. La Voz de la República Árabe Saharaui Democrática, Polisario clandestine via ALGERIA, Sept 2 at 0621 with strumming on 6297.1, good signal. Had been on 6300 for ages and in analog tuning I had not noticed the variation until reported by Brian Alexander on 6297.12 at 2120-2200 Aug 30. I feared ute QRM would be worse for the morning broadcast, but no problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. The intruding TADIL-A `bonker` on 6130 has a problem at 06-07 UT only, when DRM runs on 6125-6135 from the DW/BBC coop via PORTUGAL, 90 kW at 30 degrees, but big signal here at 0629 Sept 2. In fact, only with BFO on could I barely hear the TADIL-A beeps, and too much DRM noise to count them. The DRM noise is rather like the data bursts which follow the beeps. So, does DRM ruin TADIL-A reception for its intended recipient, and does TADIL-A disrupt DRM reception anywhere? Both of these have no business intruding in the 49m analog SWBC band (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Intruder in the middle of the 25m exclusive SWBC band: a tad below 11790, like 11789.9, 2-way SSB conversation in a non-Spanish language. Seems to be tonal Asian, Sept 2 at 1324; less adjacent broadcast QRM to it at 1411. This has been heard previously on same frequency, so unlike some of the Spanish ones which jump around, there is a better chance of DFing and tracing this, if anyone cared (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

MULTIPSK 4.15 released

A new version of the popular data modes software MULTIPSK has been released which features MIL-STD-188-110A also known as STANAG 4539 or FED-STD-1052

The main modifications of MULTIPSK 4.15 are the following:

1) Decoding of the MIL-STD-188-110A ("110A") + 110A beacon. This mode (MIL-STD-188-110A/B) is named also FED-STD-1052 or STANAG 4539. It is used mainly by professionals (the text being mostly encrypted) but also, rarely, by Hams.

The 75 bps sub-mode in TX (beacon) is proposed by Multipsk.

Several sub modes (75 to 4800 bps) and two different interleaving (short and long) are proposed. All modes are fixed frequency, except a 75 bps (bits per second) sub-mode which is transmitted in "frequency hopping". It is not decoded in this soft.

The receiver should be in USB mode. The bandwidth must extend from 300 to 3300 Hz (at -30 dB) with a relatively flat frequency response between 600 and 3000 Hz. The central frequency is, in this case, equal to 1800Hz. It can be selected a 1500 Hz central frequency for Ham receivers.

The soft automatically decodes the speed (75, 150, 600, 1200, 2400 or 4800 bps) and the interleaver (short or long), in different character formats.

The radio-amateur frequency proposed for this mode is 14104 KHz (adjusted on the transceiver).

Important: in USA, 110A text transmission is forbidden. PSE, check if it is allowed in your country.

This mode is available for licencied copies, only (otherwise, the decoding is stopped after 5 minutes). However the 75 bps sub-mode in format 8N1 (RX/TX) is free.

2) RS ID, Call ID (Prop ID)
These identifiers are now permanently monitored in background, by default (the CPU load being weak). The management of these identifiers has been improved.

For Call ID and "Prop ID" ("Propagation ID"), it is proposed four frequencies bandwiths for transmission and monitoring.
3590, 7040, 10148, 14075 KHz (to adjust on the transceiver).

All the minimum AF band, i.e. from 200 Hz to 2500 Hz can be used. These frequencies can be favourably scaned ("Transceiver" button).

Convolution code: except in 4800 bps, yes. The constraint lenght is equal to 7 bits,
Interleaving: except in 4800 bps, yes. Two interleavings are proposed: short or long. However, it is expected the possibility not to use interleaving.
Pmean/Ppeak: about 0.76 (specific to Multipsk in TX) Lowest S/N (on Multipsk): + 4 dB in 75 bps mode (first decodings at +1.5 dB) and + 10 dB in 2400 bps (the signal to noise ratio must be, in general, very good, to be able to decode this mode, i.e "excellent" at 2400 bps and "good" at 75 bps).

Each frame contains a synchronization preamble phase where the sub-mode is defined, a data phase where the unknown data is transmitted (mixed with known data to follow the transmission characteristics) , an "End of Message" ("EOM") phase and a final flushing phase (to finish de-interleaving and de-convolution operations).

An adaptative equalization is required at this speed (2400 bauds).

It seems we may still refer to Radio Austria International, since that is exactly the ID in English, plus French, German and Spanish versions, mixed with Blue Danube IS heard at 0459 September 1 on 6155, rather than the cumbersome ``Ö1`` or ``OE1``; 0500 cut into that domestic relay in Austro-German (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake Sept 1: at 1320, good signals on both 8400 and 9000; at 1415 recheck, 8400 inaudible, and 9000 just barely. At 1407, 13970 was JBA, better on 14420; none others heard up to 19 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Checking RHC Sept 1 at 0500, noted the extreme modulation quality difference between 6140 and 6120 in Spanish. 6140 has full-bodied audio frequency response, while 6120 is very clipped `telco`-quality; why? Was in an Efemérides feature on the beginning and ending of WW II around this date six years apart. But as I was tuning back and forth between the two frequencies at 0502, 6140 suddenly switched to different music introducing the English service, and so it was thence, // 6060 and 6010, while 6120 Spanish continued // weak 6000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9425, AIR, Sept 1 at 1344 OM singing a slow Hindi song; 1349 to YL continuous talk; now and then thought I heard an occasional English word or phrase with heavy Hindi accent, but maybe just imagining. Fair but fluttery signal, reminding me that I had not been hearing it much at all this summer, but it was also in yesterday now in pre-equinoxial propagation conditions. Per Aoki this is the National Channel, 500 kW, 18 degrees from Bangaluru meant for domestic coverage; unfortunately, deliberate alternation with news and other segments in English does not start until 1430 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 9524.9, VOI, modulation is so low that it`s impossible to copy any readable content, but Tuesday Sept 1 at 1332 I think I was hearing traces of the weekly excursion to Banjarmasin (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PORTUGAL [and non]. 15770, RDPI as I tuned across Sept 1 at 1445 had Brasilian rather than Luso accent, mentioning RadioBrás, quickly pausing for program ID by YL as Onda DX. The Brazilian OM was on the phone and resumed talking about DX matters. Yes, this is the weekly DX show scheduled for Tue 1430, previously thought to be over by 1442, but length apparently varies, and I did not think to check listed // 15560 where it should have been in the clear unlike 15770 which always collides with WYFR in Brazilian! The SAH between them was about 108/minute or almost 2 Hz, and WYFR fortunately weaker here at the moment, unlike probably in Brazil itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 7420, collision of two roughly equal signals, Sept 1 at 1411, one music, one talk, in Chinese? Aoki shows BBCWS Chinese service is on 7420 at 1300-1530, 250 kW at 20 degrees from Thailand, plus ChiCom jamming, presumably CNR1 program.

All India Radio`s Nepali service is also supposedly on 7420 at 1330-1430, 50 kW, 130 degrees via Guwahati, likely futile. Furthermore, 130 degrees is nowhere near the correct azimuth for Nepal from Guwahati; more like 280! Is anyone paying attention at AIR frequency management? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. Another check of 17585 to see what happens to VOA English at 1430, Sept 1: Greenville pretty weak and at 1430 sharp the signal drops noticeably but I still hear VOA English, so that would be Botswana taking over. Both too weak to tell for sure whether Bots was still doing sign-on overlap at 1428, but did not hear it, nor any warmup carrier on 17575 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WWCR still testing 15820 instead of 15825, Sept 1 at 1448 with Pastor Duke asserting ``you de man``; seems this show comes from Jefferson, Oregon. Unexpectedly good signal as sporadic E had kicked in to start a new month, but it is getting rarer and rarer, and not intense enough to reach VHF. No squeal problem heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. When WWCR is inbooming on 15820/15825, that means there is a chance of hearing nearby WWRB`s second harmonic on 18770, and sure enough, there it was Sept 1 at 1449 with weak Brother Scare but definitely // 9385 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 9715, Sept 1 at 1401 music, then Vietnamese ID by YL mentioning Washington, kHz. This hour is R. Free Asia, 250 kW, 279 degrees via Tinian, says Aoki. Fair signal here with no jamming audible, nor does Aoki asterisk any. Evidently the VietCom have enough self-confidence not to need to jam such foreign broadcasts, unlike their ChiCom and CubaCom brethren (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1330, another MW channel with a het on it revealing some station, probably US or Mexico is significantly off-frequency, Sept 1 at 0511 UT. Pitch slightly lower than the one heard again on 1280, which Bruce Winkelman put at approximately 200 Hz; but the one on 1330 stronger now and pitch wavering slightly too. ** CHINA. Firedrake check Aug 31 at 1331: poor on 9000, and barely audible/imagination level on 8400, nowhere else except in the 12040 mix (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. VOI, 9524.9, already in English news when I tuned in at 1259 August 31; fair signal and weak modulation required straining to understand. Evidently their clock was a few minutes fast (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Driving around OKC Aug 29, observed that 99.7 was on the air with gospel music, but never caught an ID. Signal was spotty and since I still don`t hear it in Enid, presumably translator or low-power test of KZLS ``Mustang``, ex-Alva-Enid with full power.

The pirate on 107.1, after years and years was STILL on the air, relaying ``Radio Free Austin`` wacko far-right programming, solid signal in center city and probably from same location a couple miles N of downtown as previously spotted, or nearby. A far greater public service would be relaying one of Austin`s excellent legal stations such as KOOP or KUT. Where is the FCC? (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Seems that ``Wire Light``, a.k.a. Cheetah Radio, a.k.a. Your World Your Way, etc., has bought more and more time on WRMI 9955, which is good news for paying the bills but a big yawn for listeners already bombarded with pointless or misleading infomercials on TV and AM. No jamming heard UT Monday Aug 31, WORLD OF RADIO still airing as scheduled at 0500, at 0530 Studio DX in Italian, but at 0600 up came YWYW again, two women conversing enthusiastically, one of them Michelle in Connecticut where the temperature was 15 degrees (not lately!). We still don`t have a complete updated schedule showing all the new Wire Light blox; on the Aug 8 version it was R. Prague fill all the way from 0600 to 1100 weekdays. YWYW has also replaced the second hour of QSO, UT Sundays at 06-07.

BTW, Jeff White says the unannounced music fill I enjoyed UT Sat between 05 and 06 was his own selexion of a wide variety of music from CDs he has collected around the world, each piece representing a different country, loaded into the automation for fill purposes, normally only in brief bits, but this week the hour-long La Rosa de Tokio had a tech problem, back next week (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 9500, Aug 31 at 1344 with nice SE Asian music, 1345 recognized BBC news theme with beeping, and Burmese; as scheduled via SINGAPORE, poor here but should be fine in Myanmar (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

WTJC, 9370v, still putting out big filthy FMy spurs, audible around 0545 UT Aug 31, and also at 1257, centered approximately 9345 and 9395, the upper one soon obscured by super-splash WWRB 9385 with Brother Scare. Since these spurs are abnormal and a bane of shortwave, I will keep reporting them, doubting they will be eliminated unless WTJC is eliminated, which may require even more severe transmitter problems. ** U S A. WWCR still testing on 15820 instead of 15825, Aug 31 at 1328, fair signal during Inspirations Across America, the black gospel music show which replaced sex criminal evangelist Tony Alamo as soon as he was convicted. IAA was interviewing a guest about his TV show with a website, which doesn`t connect so perhaps I miscopied it.

I have yet to hear Ask WWCR #299, where the frequency shift was discussed, as its mp3 is still Not Found, but apparently they replayed it again UT Sunday Aug 30 at 0145 on 5070, as monitored by Terry Wilson, MI, giving the frequency as 15830 instead of 15820 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** CHINA. No Firedrakes found on higher frequencies Aug 29, but good signals about equal at 1332 on 9000 and 8400, also at 1356 on 10210 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. RN still has a secret 3-minute English broadcast never appearing on their schedules, 1327-1330 UT on 9650, as heard again Aug 29, a few words of YL in English recognizable underneath CRI via Sackville. This follows the Dutch broadcast at 1300 via IBB, Tinang, PHILIPPINES, which we also heard in clear with IS and Dutch opening at 1259 during less than one-minute Sackville break after KBSWR and before CRI. RN relay is supposedly scheduled until 1327 only, but IBB always leaves the transmitter on another two sesquiminutes, cutting to a feed of RN in English. Is no one paying attention in Hilversum, Washington, or Tinang? Well, they are in Enid! ** RUSSIA [and non]. The 12000 transmitter at Khabarovsk is still in very bad shape, Aug 29 at 1311 with VOR Chinese service singing ``Moscow Nights`` in Russian, then Chinese announcement. The carrier is motorboating, unstable, and the modulation distorted. After we kept pointing this out, RHC moved off 12000 months ago, without a word of thanks, but still keeps announcing it as one of their morning frequencies, while in reality their own distorted signal is on 11800 instead! ** SAIPAN [and non]. 11650, Aug 29 at 1300 noted about equal level mix of CRI opening ID in Chinese, then into Esperanto; and something in Russian. Per Aoki, CRI is via Beijing site, and Russian is KFBS, overlapping during this entire hour, the second semihour on Sats being in Kazakh, then Kirghiz. The beams cross somewhere over China (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SCOTLAND [non]. 9330-CUSB, WBCQ relaying radio six international, Scotland, music festival special one time only, Aug 28 at 2003 check. Some dropouts probably from internet feed buffering, which I then went to for better direct `reception` -- sounds like the band were enjoying a good jam session altho not my musical preference. Was scheduled to run for six hours 1900-0100 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WTJC, 9370v, again with large filthy distorted FM spurs, during music, Aug 29 at 0506 peaking approximately 9395-9400 and 9340-9345 and covering some 15 kHz each. The higher one was even bothering BBC on 9410 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WRMI, 9955, fair signal but not bothered by jamming for once, UT Sat Aug 29 at 0510 with very nice mix of mostly Latin-influenced music, including Andean, Brazilian, Mexican; 0530 Sandunga on marimba, classical guitar, Up2 and Away by Fifth Dimension, etc. No announcements at all until 0559 ID and into R. Prague English. Great going, Jeff, really enjoyable to hear such a musical interlude on WRMI; let`s have more of them! But this was instead of La Rosa de Tokio DX program from Argentina as in latest received program grid dated Aug 8; LRT itself is padded with a lot of musical interludes and could be over in a semihour if it kept to the subject.

Midnight propagation on 9 MHz band varies widely from night to night, sometimes little audible from NAm, no WRMI, not even WYFR on 9355, 9385, 9680, 9715, 9985, other occasions like this, inbooming as were WTJC and its spurs.

Also monitored WRMI 24 hours later when 9955 reception was about the same, 0550 UT Sunday Aug 30, QSO With Ted Randall, sounds like more interview with Wayne Green, this time about Hiram Percy Maxim`s contributions to ham radio being only a tiny fraxion of his accomplishments, as ham was barely mentioned in his long newspaper obituary. QSO is supposed to be a two-hour show at 05-07 UT Sundays, but cut off in mid-interview at 0559 for World Baseball Today promo, ID, and 0600 into more infomercialling from Cheetah Radio, Your World Your Way (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VENEZUELA [non]. 11705, RNV via Cuba scheduled 1200-1300, still going well past the hour with last bit of music and a few sex of open carrier until 1305*. Fortunately, next occupant, NHK does not start until 1315 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
