A cuore aperto: C.G.E. 461 (1937)

Oggi mettiamo a cuore aperto un apparecchio costruito dalla C.G.E. italiana e messo in commercio nel 1937. Si tratta del Modello 461, soprammobile di di grandi dimensioni, molto pesante ma anche piuttosto particolare sia nel design che nella costruzione.

Derivato dal modello 451, messo in commercio nel 1936, il nostro 461 denota una parziale riprogettazione che interessa lo stadio MF e quello BF. Impiega le tipiche 5 valvole: 6A7, WE33 o AF3, 75, 6L6 e 80 come raddrizzatrice. Rispetto al suo predecessore, il 461 ha subìto la sostituzione della amplificatrice di MF ; dalla ormai obsoleta 78, si è passati alla nuova AF3 o WE33 che garantiva migliore stabilità, sensibilità, amplificazione e minor rumore di fondo.

Altro cambiamento fu quello della valvola finale di BF; dalla 42, si passò alla appena uscita 6L6, molto più potente, poteva meglio pilotare il generoso altoparlante di ben 26 centimetri di diametro, garantendo, tutt'oggi, una riproduzione audio veramente molto buona. Del 461 esistevano due versioni: lusso e normale ma la differenza era assai esigua poiché si trattava di applicare una cornice in legno, lavorata a traforo, davanti alla tela dell'altoparlante...tutto qui.

Le gamme coperte sono tre: Onde Medie, Onde Corte ed Onde Lunghe; i controlli sono classici: interruttore rotativo per l'accensione, controllo di volume, sintonia, cambio gamma laterale e controllo di tono. Proprio su questo controllo vale la pena soffermarci; in realtà, non si tratta del solo controllo di tono ma di un vero e proprio filtro di banda che agisce sul nucleo del primo trasformatore di MF e funziona in questo modo: fino a 3/4 della sua corsa, il potenziometro agisce come controllo di tono classico (condensatore sul circuito anodico della finale BF) ma proseguendone la rotazione e grazie ad una leva calettata sull'alberino, vene messo in movimento un sistema di leve articolate che mette in movimento il nucleo della prima MF, facendo così variare la banda passante del ricevitore, consentendo di rendere la sintonizzazione molto acuta e selettiva. (ne ho fatto una breve video clip).

Il telaio è molto robusto e pesante ed ha il sistema "estrazione rapida", brevetto C.G.E., che grazie a due soli perni ed all'assenza di viti, permette di estrarre il telaio in pochi secondi. Il suo altoparlante, come detto, è molto grande, circa 26 centimetri di diametro e consente un ascolto ottimo ancora oggi, la scala parlante è suddivisa per nazioni, cosa assai comune negli apparecchi di quegli anni (Marelli, Unda, Watt, ecc.).

Può essere alimentato da 110 a 255 Volts, come era uso fare in anni in cui le reti di alimentazione non erano affatto stabili. Impiega compensatori ceramici ed in MICALEX, all'epoca nuovissimo isolante. Sul retro troviamo le prese di antenna a terra ed accanto, la prese FONO.

Fenomeno Fading: il Malware dell'Etere

Quante volte durante un ascolto di una Stazione Radio in onda corta ci è capitato di tribolare per l'andamento altalenante del segnale, che arriva già debole di suo, facendoci così perdere un bell'ascolto da un lontano DX. Questo fastidioso fenomeno, caratteristico nella propagazione delle onde radio e più avvertibile sulle frequenze da 3 a 30 Mhz è chiamato Fading. Per meglio conoscerlo parliamone un po'. Le cause di questa strana attenuazione del segnale radio che si va a ricevere in modo altalenante, vanno ricercate nelle condizioni fisiche che in quel momento si stanno verificando nella Ionosfera cioè in quella zona della Stratosfera a circa 100 Km di altezza che viene fortemente ionizzata da Fotoni Solari e Raggi Cosmici, zona che permette la propagazione delle onde radio, cioè onde elettromagnetiche che sono l'insieme di campo elettrico e campo magnetico perpendicolari tra loro e che viaggiano con velocità pari a quella della luce a Km. 300.000 al secondo. La presenza della Ionosfera consente a queste onde di rimbalzare a lunga distanza tra il punto dove è posto il Trasmettitore ed il sito ove è ubicata la Stazione ricevente. Ciò precisato torniamo al Fading ( che vuol dire affievolimento ) e che fa diventare affievolito e evanescente un segnale radio, sottoponendolo ad un ritmo ondulante di va e vieni. Questo effetto lo si può verificare oltre con l'audio anche osservando l'ago dello strumento S-Meter di un ricevitore, che sotto intenso Fading oscilla come impazzito. Come si spiega il Fading: semplicemente con il fatto che le onde radio giungono a noi da lunga distanza e per coprirla compiono due o tre rimbalzi sulla Ionosfera che come abbiamo visto è quello strato ionizzato che permette il rimbalzo a terra delle onde corte. Ora osserviamo cosa succede durante questi rimbalzi : il tragitto a due rimbalzi ovviamente è più corto di quello a tre, quindi se la somma dei 2 segnali, il primo a 2 rimbalzi e il secondo a 3 raggiunge in contemporanea il ricevitore (bisogna considerare che comunque anche se viaggiano alla velocità della luce tra loro vi è un ''micro'' scostamento di tempo e inoltre sono soggetti a rinforzarsi o ad opporsi fra loro, quindi la componente del micro scostamento sommata a rinforzo o opposizione crea l'effetto che la radio emetta voce o suono fluttuante in maniera incostante: questa è la spiegazione del Fading. Per ovviare al problema da molto tempo si è ricorso al circuito del controllo automatico di guadagno ''CAG'' che negli apparecchi radio agisce sull'amplificazione dei segnali in ingresso, variandola in modo da ottenere in uscita il segnale il più costante possibile. In buona sostanza il Controllo Automatico di Guadagno va ad amplificare ( istante per istante) di più i segnali deboli e di meno quelli forti, tant'è che nei ricevitori per uso professionale il comando CAG è diviso in 2 posizioni di lento o veloce ciò per lasciare all'Operatore di gestire al meglio il suo funzionamento. Per completezza va ricordato che esiste anche il Fading chiamato ''Selettivo '' che induce uno sgradevole effetto di distorsione del segnale audio, dando luogo ad una perdita della qualità del segnale da ricevere. Da ultimo, in campo professionale, per contrastare il Fading si impiegano ''Antenne Diversity'' utilizzando due sistemi di antenna, ciò per migliorare la sicurezza di ricezione. Le 2 antenne vengono posizionate con diverse angolazioni per ottenere differenti captazioni di segnale perché se un'antenna capta un segnale che è dissolvente facilmente l'altra antenna che è posizionata con una diversa angolazione può captare un segnale sufficientemente intenso per consentire una discreta ricezione. Ecco oggi abbiamo visto più da vicino il fastidioso fenomeno chiamato Fading ( che per ora ancora non è accusato di contribuire al cambiamento climatico ) e sappiamo come armeggiare con le nostre amate antenne e radio per gestirlo al meglio e ricevere così le Stazioni Radio Dx davvero più lontane!

Heard via SDR Kiwi remote receivers in New Zealand with good signal, only extremely weak signal detected directly in Friol, NW of Spain on LSB, unintelligible comments.

Too much else going on now so I only check occasionally, mostly rock music so what is the excitement about? 1752 talking in French. Never going to make it direct to deep North America on such a schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Aug 7 around 1450, tune in via Brasil remote, LRA36 is in progress, active again on Saturday after missing the last two. After breakfast, listening again at 1528 ID, S4-S6, usual pop music and frequent IDs past 1540; 1549 YL talking about the bases or greeting them; 1549 OM ``es todo por hoy`` fake sign-off; 1551 Antártida song, immediately followed 1554 by more music; will it be for another 3.5 hours like Wed? 1604 ``sign-on`` of `El Lejano Sur` Wed program. About something happening on 30 June 1810. Manuel Méndez soon explains that:

MM had been listening since 1410 direct. He keeps hearing it past 1734; as I do when checked at 1700, 1713, 1743, 1803, 1830; and still at 2017 S3-S5 ID, gone by 2052 next check.

Not only running much longer now but on additional days of week. Wojtek Zaremba, Poland, was also hearing it direct on THURSDAY, August 5 at 1915, And FRIDAY August 6 at 1913 as reported on HCDX (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, UT Sat Aug 7 at 0124, tuning in WRMI early before WOR at 0130, RAE, Argentina to the World, in English is wrapping up a program dated Tuesday July 13! I wonder if they can`t keep producing new shows every week or day; or a mixup in playback, an old show not overwritten? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. Re decommissioning more and more LW/MW ND beacons, ```That site also purports to explain why this ``modernization`` is being undertaken, but is unclear to me and unconvincing. But then I am not a pilot. ``Completion date of the project is planned for May 2024`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)``` --- Walt Salnaniw, who commutes between Victoria and Masset BC, replies:

``Glenn, I happen to be a pilot, and here's my take: Most pilots use GPS for navigation with fancy Garmin units in the cockpit. I never really did, preferring a map in my lap and nav aids (VOR and NDBs) to help with navigation. I always enjoyed using NDBs, both the official ones, and the unofficial (read AM stations on 530 to 1700 kHz) ones. They were surprisingly useful and simple to use. The NDB signal when heard would point directly to the station, so it was very easy to turn the aircraft directly to the signal, and if you flew over it, it would immediately swing 180 degrees. One could also triangulate one's position by tuning several stations. VORs more or less worked the same way, but in the VHF range. I always found them a bit more complicated to use. ** NETHERLANDS [non]. At 0214 UT Sat Aug 7 I posted to WOR iogroup:

``Cupid Radio on 7780 and 5800 now --- Hearing the TRSW relay of Neth pirate Cupid Radio after 0200 UT Sat Aug 7 as publicized on 5800 only, from WRMI, but rather poor here in noise level and local blobs. Say, why wouldn`t it be also on 7780 since during this hour the two are normally // as on UT Mondays for WOR at 0230?

Guess what, it IS also on 7780, which is much better here, S9+20/30, which is abnormally strong for that frequency on their NE antenna. Guess what2, 7570 is off again, and I bet 7780 is now on the NW antenna instead. Glenn``

Cupid Radio replies: ``Hello Glenn, Thank you very much for the reception report, too bad 5800 khz work out not that well last night. Propagation have been not really helping so far, it seems the higher bands are opening a bit now and then. Well it was lot of fun being relayed by the transmitters of WRMI, I saw the video on the internet from the station and it`s very impressive. The antenna park have been guarded by alligators under the wires. I don`t know with how much power I was being relayed, assume 5 kW or so. Terry Colgan also replied: ``An email to Jeff White at radiomiami9 (at) gmail (dot) com asking him to keep TRSW on this freq might not be amiss. According to TRSW's current program schedule, Europirate relays on WRMI end their run on 5800 kHz at the end of August, but a second series begins September 5 UTC on TRSW's "regular" frequency of 5950 kHz.

The new series runs through the end of November and airs at Midnight UTC, and changes to 0100 UTC on November 14. Along with returning stations like Radio Monique International and Cupid Radio, other stations like the UK's Radio Clash and The Netherlands' Radio Pamela join the lineup. However, NOT confirmed on IRRS SW 7290 via Bulgaria: listening from 1758 hearing only weak Chinese station via UTwente, but warble on USB only, timesignal at 1800 and continuing until it cuts off at 1805* as scheduled, still no IRRS/WOR for at least 10 minutes; recheck at 1820 now we`re on 7290 running in progress at S9+15/25.

Also confirmed Sat Aug 7 at 1940 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, about 10 minutes into so started on time about 1930, VG S9+9 into nearby KB0FX remote.

NOT confirmed Sat Aug 7 at 2000 on WRMI 15770, replaced without notice by a gospel huxter, as also shown now on skedgrid. DJ’s line up for a celebration of offshore broadcasting

Radio Mi Amigo is set to return to the airwaves on 14th and 15th August in conjunction with Carillon Wellbeing Radio. Further to their previous successful radio broadcasts, this year’s 2-day Pirate Radio event on Harwich Quay has attracted a host of DJ’s who are coming from near and far to transmit from the restored Lightvessel LV18 as a tribute to the 60’s offshore radio stations. This year’s on-air team, headed by the Programme Director and Trustee Garry Lee, will bring back the popular sound of the Offshore Pirate stations that broadcast from just off our coast and were served from the Ha’penny Pier, Harwich, which is the permanent berth of LV18. Joining the crew will be two DJs from America and music connoisseurs, ex Pirate BBC Essex presenter, Tim Gillett and ex BBC Suffolk presenter, Stephen ‘Foz’ Foster.

The broadcast will run 24 hours a day, from 12 o’clock, midnight on the Saturday morning till 12 o’clock midnight on the Sunday night. The broadcast will be available on the Carillon radio website at www.carillonradio.com and may also be heard from their transmitters in the Midlands on 1476AM / medium wave.

This tribute to the Offshore Pirate Radio Stations will celebrate the likes of Radio Caroline, Radio London and several others that appeared off the coast of Harwich in the 1960’s bringing about a revolution in radio broadcasting. Following the previous Pirate Radio broadcasts from LV18, which attracted thousands of visitors to the area, Radio Mi Amigo will celebrate the watery wireless days from the studio, located on the bridge of the Lightvessel. Further to previous year’s events, LV18 will broadcast from her permanent berth by the Ha’penny Pier, Harwich, enabling members of the public to not only visit the classic vessel on the Sunday, but to meet the DJ’s.

Broadcasting from the classic heritage vessel LV18, which featured in the film ‘The Boat that Rocked’, Radio Mi Amigo will bring back the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s, the golden era of the Pirate Stations. Visitors will be able to visit the ship on Sunday 15th and view the new ‘Pirate Radio Exhibition’, which has been financed by Harwich Haven Authority via the Essex Community Foundation. The exhibition features new interactive Audio/Visual systems throughout the vessel and new interpretation signage.

HISTORY
In the summer of 1964, the boring world of British broadcasting was rocked to its foundations by the launch of offshore radio stations Radio Atlanta, Radio Caroline, Radio City and Radio London.

On the weekend of 14th and 15th August, a unique 2-day event will be taking place in Harwich and the Tendring sunshine coast in Essex, UK. The restored heritage Lightvessel LV18 will be hosting a radio broadcast and exhibition celebrating the Offshore Pirate radio broadcasts from the ‘pop ships’ which were anchored just off the coast of Harwich. Tendring was very much the centre of these activities at this time with thousands of tourists sitting on the beaches of Clacton, Walton, Frinton, Harwich and Brightlingsea, listening to their favourite DJ’s on transistor radios. On August 14th this year it will be 54 years since the government closed down most of the Pirate Radio stations with the Marine Offences Act, as depicted in the film ‘The Boat that Rocked’ of 2009, which featured LV18 as part of the filming in Portland, Dorset.

The Pharos Trust has hosted many very successful 'Pirate' Radio events on LV18 and, along with Pirate BBC Essex over the last 20 years, have attracted thousands of visitors to the town. These previous broadcasts and have featured Johnnie Walker, Emperor Rosko, Dave Cash, Keith Skues, Tony Blackburn and many other ‘pirate radio’ celebrities. This year a host of DJ’s from near and far are joining the team including 2 DJ’s from America and music connoisseurs, ex Pirate BBC Essex presenter, Tim Gillett and ex BBC Suffolk presenter, Stephen ‘Foz’ Foster.

WBCQ Super station testing?

Whilst tuning across the band August 6 at 2125, I came across a very powerful signal on 9330. It was carrier only - no modulation, but from the strength of the signal I think it might be from WBCQ. The HM01 Numbers Station from Cuba which also uses 9330 is not scheduled at this hour. I was listening for about five minutes, before going to bed.

Maybe the new tube from Thales has arrived in double quick time, and after installation they are putting the station on test to be 100% sure that everything is working correctly, before resuming their regular schedule.

I listened again later at 2300 and found the Portuguese programme intended for Brazil. However, this was very weak and it was probably coming from the small back-up transmitter.

Nothing detectable on 9330 this morning July 7 in the U.K., but I do hear the back-up transmitter on air with weak signal and the usual WLC programming via the SDR in Bakersville NC, USA.

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity took a deep dive during the July 29 – August 4 reporting week. Sunspots were gone July 28 – August 1, so the average daily sunspot number dropped from 33.1 last week to 6 this week. Average daily solar flux slipped from 83 to 74.8.

Predicted solar flux is 74 and 73 on August 6 – 7; 75 on August 8 – 10; 74 on August 11 – 12; 75 on August 3 – 14; 76 on August 15 – 16; 75 and 74 on August 17 – 18; 72 on August 19 – 31; 74 on September 1, and 75 on September 2 – 10.

Predicted planetary A index is 12, 8, and 8 on August 6 – 8; 5, 10, and 8 on August 9 – 11; 5 on August 12 – 15; 10, 8, and 8 on August 16 – 18; 5 on August 19 – 22; 8, 12, and 8 on August 23 – 25; 5 on August 26 – 31; 12 and 10 on September 1 – 2, and 5 on September 3 – 11.

I (K7RA) spent 8 days in the hospital for neurosurgery last week, so I brought my laptop along and was able to compile this week’s report, thanks to help from many readers.

One thing I did every day to keep myself busy and make propagation observations was to use free public receivers on the internet via resources such as http://kiwisdr.com/public/ to search for 10-meter propagation beacons. Then, I would document and send signal reports to the beacon operators. In July, I put up an IARU-coordinated CW beacon, K7RA/b on 28.2833 MHz, and enjoy receiving reports from listeners.

Jon Jones, N0JK, writes:

“There was a 2-meter sporadic-E opening on August 4. Ron, WZ1V (FN31) reported to me that he worked KA9CFD (EN40), K0TPP (EM48), and W5LDA (EM15) at around 2225 UTC on FT8 via Es. He said KA9CFD was loud. 2-meter Es is very rare in August.

“The last week of July there was a strong tropospheric opening on 2 meters from northeast Kansas. I worked as far as KE8FD (EN80) and W3CP (EM74) on FT8. I had a PSK flag on 2 meters from W3IP (FM19), more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) away.

“The Perseids meteor shower is building in intensity with people now making morning MSK144 contacts on 2 meters. The peak is the night of August 11 and the morning of August 12.”

Ken Brown, N4SO, on Alabama’s Gulf Coast reports:

“On July 30, the Estimated International Sunspot Number (EISN) was 0, and July 31, and I was still able to log VE3TEN, KA3JOE and W2DLL — Ontario, Pennsylvania, and New York, nearly a straight line to the northeast.

“On July 31, I was still able to log K6FRC/b at 1454 UTC. Weak but readable (339).

“On August 1, at 0400 UTC, 11 PM local, I had a long list starting with N9TNY, W8EH, WA2SFT, WI4L, and K4JEE, in EN51, EM79, EM76, EM74, and EM78, respectively. Straight line north and northeast.”

From multiple sources, I received a news release from the High Altitude Observatory in Colorado regarding the revision of their Solar Cycle 25 predictions. The parts about radio propagation and the progression of Solar Cycle 24 are mine.

News Release: A revised prediction from the NASA High Altitude Observatory based at the University of Colorado. NASA heliophysicists have released a revised prediction for Solar Cycle 25. The report generated by Ricky Egeland, a solar physicist working in the NASA Space Radiation Analysis Group, now calls for the peak of Solar Cycle 25 to top out at a value of 195 ±17 based upon the new scale for calculating smoothed sunspot number (SSN). For reference Solar Cycle 21 peaked at an SSN of 233 (new scale) while Solar Cycle 23 peaked at an SSN of 180 (new scale).

If this prediction holds up ham radio will see excellent world-wide F-layer conditions on 10 meters for several years around the time of the solar maximum. Conditions on 6 meters should be good in the equinox periods before and after solar max with consistent openings on medium haul polar routes. Six-meter routes traversing the equator should experience consistent openings ±9 months from solar max.

Ricky Egeland is a participating member in the group headed up by Scott McIntosh and Bob Leamon that published a paper 9 months ago outlining the existence of magnetic bands within the sun that govern the sunspot and Hale cycles. At the time of its publishing, the paper went on to predict the peak of Solar Cycle 25 could be as high as Solar Cycle 21. Today’s release is a revised prediction based upon data observed since the original paper was published. To be sure we are still in early days. The solar rotation cycle, as marked by sunspot activity, was established on April 19, 2021, so we are only 90 days into actually observing Solar Cycle 25 activity. It is now agreed that the dramatic run-up in sunspot activity we experienced late last fall, while tied to Solar Cycle 25, was an outlier.

When asked directly about whether they can declare if the terminator event they wrote about in the fall 2020 paper has occurred, Scott McIntosh stated, “We can’t be sure just yet but we are very, very close.”

It also should be noted that while it has been over a year since the sun produced a Solar Cycle 24 region with a sunspot worthy of a NASA classification, the sun has been steadily producing spotless Solar Cycle 24 active regions, the last of which formed right on the solar equator at N00/W54 on July 24, 2021, as recorded by Jan Alvestad’s Solar Terrestrial Activity Report website. These active regions, being part of a Solar Cycle in its final stages of existence, produce no spots and only last for a few hours before they dissipate. The previous Solar Cycle 24 active region formed on June 28, 2021. Once the Solar Cycle 24 active regions cease altogether, Solar Cycle 25 will take off in earnest. — with thanks to Bob Marston, AA6XE

Sunspot numbers for July 29 – August 4 were 0, 0, 0, 0, 13, 15, and 14, with a mean of 6. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 75.8, 75.5, 75.9, 74.9, 74.6, 75.9, and 70.8, with a mean of 74.8. Estimated planetary A indices were 8, 6, 6, 4, 17, 10, and 5, with a mean of 8. Middle latitude A index was 12, 6, 6, 4, 13, 15, and 5, with a mean of 8.7.

Propagation News – 8 August 2021

The last week looked like we were back at solar minimum again! With the solar flux declining to 71, and the sunspot number at 14 on Thursday, it hardly looks like things are improving. This was coupled with news from NASA that they have revised their projections for Solar Cycle 25.

NASA heliophysicists at the High Altitude Observatory, based at the University Of Colorado, now predict the peak of Solar Cycle 25 will top out at a value of 195, plus or minus 17. This is based upon the new scale for calculating smoothed sunspot numbers. For reference, Solar Cycle 21 peaked at an SSN of 233 on the new scale, while Solar Cycle 23 peaked at an SSN of 180 on the same scale. They also now agree that the dramatic run-up in sunspot activity we experienced late last Autumn was an outlier. In other words, they are saying that Cycle 25 may not yet have properly started. Or at least, we are not seeing a dramatic start, but only time will tell if they are right.

Maximum useable frequencies remain subdued, partly because of the low solar flux and partly because we are still in the summer doldrums. With the daytime critical frequency mainly in the range 5 to 6MHz, this means the 40m band remains closed to near-vertical incidence skywave or short skip. Daytime MUFs over 3,000km struggle to get much above 18MHz.

Laurie, G3UML reports OA4DX in Peru has been CQing on 30m using CW around midnight, nice if you fancy working a fairly rare one. Thirty metres can be a good band after dark if you like digital modes or CW.

Amateurs looking to work around the UK during the day are better off looking at 60 metres, the 5MHz band, or perhaps just waiting until nightfall when the absorbing D-layer dissipates and 80m comes alive.

There is a chance of unsettled geomagnetic conditions across this weekend, thanks to a high-speed solar wind from a coronal hole.

Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain in the mid-70s. Geomagnetic conditions look set to remain mainly quiet, apart from a period around August 10th and 11th when the Kp index may rise to four.

So, in conclusion, we think the main message is to make the most of any Sporadic-E as the season is now past its peak. And if you want to work DX stay as high in frequency as you can during the day, perhaps 17 or even 15 metres, or look at 30m and 40m after dark for some occasional surprises.

VHF and up:

The basic pattern of unsettled weather looks like continuing into the coming week. This means that rain scatter QSOs should be worth a look for the GHz operators. It is hard to see any significant Tropo coming out of this weather pattern except perhaps for a time around the middle part of the week when high pressure to the south of Britain may give some Tropo conditions from southern areas into the continent.

The other mode of choice, even in August, is still going to be Sporadic-E and this spell of unsettled weather is very good for providing strong summer jet streams, which can be important in the formation process of Sporadic-E. Overall, the positioning of the jet streams looks better at the end of this week and into the beginning of next week, whereas later next week the jet stream strengths will probably be weaker.

As we move into the middle of August, the peak of the Perseids meteor shower is approaching in the second half of the week. This is potentially good for Sporadic-E, since meteors are the source of the ionisation comprising Sporadic-E, but obviously also a good thing for meteor scatter activity. Thursday the 12th and Friday the 13th sees the peak of the shower, so with a ZHR of 100 and some big fireballs, not only will MSK144 and FSK441 digimodes produce excellent results with modest stations, fast CW and SSB with slick operating will also bring QSOs for those larger stations.

Moon declination goes negative next Thursday so Moon windows will shorten as the week progresses. Perigee is still nearly a fortnight away, but path losses will continue to decline. (rsgb.org)

** OKLAHOMA. 515-MCW kHz, Aug 5 at 0637 check, 25-watt NDB in Ponca
City, PN, is off. Seems it comes and goes quite unpredictably, rather

** OKLAHOMA. 100.3, Aug 5 at 0057 UT, sporadic E FM DX check with some high MUFs out there and some others DXing Okies not too far from me: but only unusual I get on the caradio is some very weak Mexmx and Spanish on this frequency. It is not fading much which is unlike Es but also unlike typical fringe-area groundwave. Are there any SS around here? Yes!

Taft is an insignificant town of 250 just west of Muskogee, not Tulsa. The 104.9 is you guessed it a Tulsa translator, K285GW, but the WTFDA db says it relays KXTD-1530, nor KCXR. And KCXR is not shown as relaying anything. Or are all three really the same How-Good? The only SS 100.3 in KS is a religious 100-watter way out in Ulysses, KQUI, ``cocky``? Then we'll have some of John Betjeman's poems set to music and part of a sonata by Franz von Biber. A Bartok rhapsody for violin next and part of String Quartet No. 1 by Copland. The programme ends with a traditional Georgian Chorale, part of a Telemann Quartet, and some Vivaldi.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.

WRMI RELAYS DUTCH PIRATE CUPID RADIO FRIDAY AT 10 P.M. ET

Texas Radio Shortwave is teaming with WRMI to present an hour of music and talk from Cupid Radio.

The program will be broadcast on 5800 kHz, Friday, August 6, at 10 p.m. ET (0200 GMT on August 7).

Reception reports must be sent directly to the station because Texas radio shortwave won’t issue a verification for the broadcast. The station’s address is cupidradio@hotmail.com.

This is the fifth in a series of weekly WRMI relays of European pirates and low-power licensed broadcasters, many of which haven’t been heard in North America for many years — if ever. The rest of the series looks like this:

August 14 - Free Radio Service-Holland, The Netherlands
August 21 - Atlantic 2000 International, France
August 28 - Radio Delta International, The Netherlands.

Beginning in September, Texas Radio Shortwave, Limpia Mountains Radio, and WRMI will begin a new series of Europirate relays on a different day of the week and on a different frequency. An announcement’s been posted on TRSW’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/texasradiosw).

WRMI’s transmitters are located in Okeechobee, Florida, USA.

Texas Radio Shortwave lurks stealthily in international waters off the South Texas coast. Its programs are regularly broadcast in North America and Europe.

Limpia Mountains Radio operates from a cave on Brooks Mountain in Jeff Davis County in far West Texas. It co-produces radio programs with Texas Radio Shortwave.

WRMI TO AIR SECOND SERIES OF EUROPEAN FREE RADIO AND LOW-POWER LICENSED STATIONS

WRMI will air a second series of Texas Radio Shortwave programs featuring European free-radio and low-power licensed stations during September, October, and November.

The one-hour programs will be broadcast every Friday at 9 p.m. ET (Saturday at 0100 UTC) by WRMI, Okeechobee, Florida, on Texas Radio Shortwave’s “regular” frequency of 5950 kHz.
