Glenn Hauser logs September 13-14, 2014

** CHINA. CNR1 jammers Sept 14:

13970, Sept 14 at 1320, CNR1 jammer with Chinese opera, poor to fair

12870, Sept 14 at 1325, CNR1 jammer, but not synch with the others

13830 & 13795, Sept 14 at 1326, CNR1 jammers, poor // stronger 13970

15870, Sept 14 at 1327, CNR1 jammer, fair

15545, Sept 14 at 1327, CNR1 jammer, fair

16100, Sept 14 at 1328, CNR1 jammer, poor; none in the 17s, 18s, 19s

15115 & 15195 & 15265, CNR1 jammers, good, but all with CCI victims
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11840, Sept 14 at 0117, RHC is open carrier/dead air, while nominal modulation on 11670 and stronger Spanish 11760; 0133 recheck, still DA on 11840

18210, Sept 14 at 0122, third harmonic of RHC very poor but // 6070

5025, Sept 14 at 0129, R. Rebelde usual VG signal, except with BFO the carrier is slightly wobbling/warbling; no such problem with 5040 RHC. Recheck at 0609, now 5025 is open carrier/dead air except for a lite whine, but anyway now it`s not wobbling

13740, Sept 14 at 0134, RHC Spanish gone again from scheduled all-evening frequency, while 15230 is propagating, and 9810 too

6000, Sept 14 at 0608, RHC in wrong language Spanish instead of English, which remains on 6060, 6100, 6165. Spanish is not supposed to be on any frequency after 0500.

9850, Sept 14 at 1306, RHC on this frequency late with ``news`` perplexed at the hostility from Wáshington such as jailing The Cuban [ever less than] Five, despite Cuba being at an ``alto nivel de desarrollo humano``. Well, duh, it`s all because they decided to go Commie 55 years ago. Cuts off amid, a few seconds before 1307* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 12070, 9965, 9315, 11710, Sept 14 at 0116, all R. Cairo frequencies are missing again, which has been the case for several nights now whenever checked. Without requiring extensive monitoring, I wonder if any or all other ERTU broadcasts at other dayparts are absent, besides the usual ones (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9935 and slightly stronger // 9420, Sept 14 at 0118, ERTOpen with YL in Greek rather than music; JBA carrier on 15630 is probably the third Avlis (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 7375, Sept 14 at 0132, The Mighty KBC via GERMANY, with VOA Radiogram tones a bit later than usual. 0140 long KBC jingle, axually an ad, another for Super-Cove; Comet antennas from KBCimports.com; 0142 back to `Giant Jukebox`. 0148 starts Kraig Krist`s ``Forgotten Song`` of the week, James Brown`s ``Living in America`` inside which he utters ``Eddie Murphy, eat your heart out``, referring to EM`s impersonation of JB; was from Dec 1985. 0155 usual wrapup by Eric greeting a number of listeners including Dan Sheedy in his yello Speedo. VG signal on the UT-Sunday-only 00-02 broadcast via Nauen (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 11595, Sept 14 at 0132, Station YHWH with usual screed, fair signal but good punchy modulation. Found by chance bandscanning, tho Dan Sheedy had earlier heard him on 9605 mentioning 11595 as another of his preferred frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Sept 13 at 1530-1700 UT, Cherokee Strip parade around the square in downtown Enid, one of two annual big parades, the other being Tri-State Music Festival in early May. This one has only a few marching bands, but lots of other stuff by local businesses and luminaries, longhorns, antique cars, including our two radio groups:

KOFM blue van, not mentioning original and still sibling KGWA 960:http://www.w4uvh.net/KOFMvan.jpg

The parade is organized by the local ham radio club, which takes great pride in its participation, using 2-meter repeater:http://www.w4uvh.net/W5HTKparade.jpg
(Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1610, Sept 13 at 1908 UT on caradio just north of Carrier OK, I check out the TIS at Great Salt Plains State Park, to which we are headed. Last we heard for months/years, this was a zombie unit putting out a hum but nothing else.

Now WQCL720 has been revivified, relaying NOAA NWS loops, not out of OKC, but out of Wichita (but also mentioning conditions in peripheral Enid, regional OKC). I had never heard this as far away as Enid and it`s probably a recent development. Recorded a clip for example, not including Wichita ID, but obviously from there, mostly about south-central Kansas, and just after we stopped recording, at 2028 UT, roboYL calls herself ``Misty``, get it? Weather-related monicker. Is ``she`` all over NOAA now? She has a hard time achieving proper intonation, pasting words together. Recorded sample has cicadas in background we didn`t notice at the time, so pervasive are they with windows open.

We drive right by the place where the TIS pole used to be, at the entrance to the SP on its east side along Hwy 38, but it`s gone. Instead, just south of there is a brand-new-looking building with no windows, no signage identifying it, but a tell-tale TIS-style monopole antenna atop. It`s right next to a powerline and transformer, so no need for solar panels. Building looks larger than necessary for a 10-watt TIS transmitter; at first I was not certain this thing is the TIS, since parked right by it, cannot overcome the powerline noise level! But it covers the park and adjacent NWR very well. The only sign refers to a fibre-optic line which may be unrelated. Photos:

WQCL720 ``1610`` sign on trail elsewhere in park, with observer:

Kanokla fibre-optic warning sign next to WQCL720 building:http://www.w4uvh.net/Kanoklasign.jpg

This is quite near, across the highway from Kegelman Auxiliary USAF field with the big soccer-ball radome which serves as the ``Enid/Vance AFB`` weather radar; and emergency landing strip for Vance training flights, probably unpersonned.

Once again I scout the rental cabins at GSPSP, which now have a new faux-log finish, especially since veterans get 25% discount; of the six, one is isolated from the others and surely the one for a potential DX-pedition. Noise level not too bad but can still hear some on the portable at 1710, and some popping on shortwave. Probably not enough room or isolation to string a real Beverage. Each cabin has a picture window on the backside toward the lake, except from here you can`t see the lake for the trees in the way. At least an armadillo was rooting in the brush nearby (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Sept 13 at 2155 UT, KZLS is in open-carrier/dead air, ho hum (Glenn Hauser, GSPNWR OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 100.7, Sept 13 at 1930 UT, notice that this Ponca City station really rounds itself excessively to ``101 Country KPNC`` (Glenn Hauser, GSPSP OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. KSBI-TV ``52`` OKC, now on RF 23 instead of 50, continues to pretend it has a translator in Enid during legal IDs such as this one snapped on August 20:
http://www.w4uvh.net/K45EJ.jpg
I don`t know about the one in Ponca City, but KSBI has been listed also with several other translators around the state and as far as Wichita KS, which they never ID. The Enid analog 45 has been gone for many years, and yet to reappear as DTV tho still licensed and CP`d (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Sept 14 at 0106, JBA carrier from R. Chaski until cutoff at 0111:00.5 which is 11.5 seconds later than one binite ago, right on schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RWANDA. 13660, Sunday Sept 14 until 1315*, tune-in to last few notes of BaBcoCk music loop IS and off; Aoki explains it`s the Afar service of TWR via Kigali at 1300-1315 Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Sept 14 at 0114, SLBC carrier on, fair with heavy flutter, 0114:45.5 music starts, 0115:17 timesignal ends, both one second earlier than typically, as always compared to WWV (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAIWAN. 9200, Sept 14 at 1254, very poor signal with YL in Chinese; can`t make it // 11785 CNR1 jammer, so maybe really Sound of Hope if not far-out-of-synch jammer (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Sept 14 at 0125, JBA HIFER beacon K6FRC in California, checked just as some guy on WRMI 5950 mentions this and others being heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7265-LSB, Sept 14 at 0120, Norman, W6T, is the current Route 66 on the Air special op, working co-channel pileups. Never heard him say where he is, but listed as ``Rover 2, of the Northern Arizona DX Association``. Not on 7266; at 0150 now on 7264-LSB. I check 20m then:

14265-USB, Sept 14 at 0152, W6A, Randy in Santa Mónica is here working KD0ZXL in MO. This is the final day of the special Route 66 event (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1738 monitoring: confirmed after 0100 UT Sunday Sept 14 on WRMI extra service, 5950 --- and Bolivia 5952.4 is apparently off, no het for a change. Yes, the latest edition of WOR this time.

For good measure, WOR 1738 also from 0131 UT Sunday Sept 14 on KVOH 9975. Carrier came on about 0121 over Uzbekistan, brief tone, silence except for some hum, just before 0125 music starts, brief cut in transmission 0127, back on by 0128 with praise music in Spanish, 0130 usual English sign on and introducing WOR. Very good signal level, but as always somewhat hummy and undermodulated. Next:

UT Monday 0259v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB
Tuesday 1100 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 0630 & 1430 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
Wednesday 1315 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 2100 on WBCQ 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15420-, CUSB, UT Sunday Sept 14 at 0136, WBCQ is on 19m way late again, now // 7490 and 9330 with music, then TimTron speaking, while non // programming is on 5110v-CUSB. 15420 is almost on-frequency, but a few Hz slightly low compared to carriers on 15425, 15390, 15385 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 990, Sept 13 at 2201 UT, unknown network news in English, a signal I don`t quite get daytime in Enid, no doubt 250-W ND KRSL in Russell KS.

1370, Sept 13 circa 2200 UT, no signal on caradio from Dodge City KS, 5 kW ND KGNO, so suspect again it`s off (or QRP?). I can`t get it on groundwave at home in Enid, but have heard it in daytime a few miles north of Enid on US 81, and now I am 25-30 miles closer to it at Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

1510-, Sept 13 circa 2200 UT, I am also hearing the off-frequency het from KCTE Independence MO, making it on daytime groundwave to here, vs the Kansan, KNNS Larned. It must be awful directly between Larned and the non-KS Independence (Glenn Hauser, caradio at Great Salt Plains NWR OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

NOTE: the Sept 13 outage affecting
www.w4uvh.net where WOR audio and DXLD files reside, was revived after 0600 UT Sept 14. Tnx to those concerned who inquired. Wouldn`t you know, this happened as I was taking a much-needed day off (gh)
