** AUSTRALIA. 2368.5, Jan 22 circa 1845, no signal from R. Symban into NSW SDR; it`s the Greek ethnic station which used to be on 120m years ago but recently reported by someone nearby. Is anyone else hearing t? Found nothing on website about this frequency, but apparently quite active on VHF digital, mentions 151 MHz area. WRTH now shows most such stations are in 206 MHz band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 1610 kHz, Jan 27 at 0158 UT, CHHA Toronto is managing to modulate unlike last night, checked via Milton Ont SDR, PSA in language with `O Canada` jingles, presumably Tagalog, with English admixtures, CHHA ID in passing, ``Voice of the Community``, and ``Radio Latin, Wednesday edition``. In the first place I was checking whether it still ID on air as ``Radio Voces Latinas`` like the website is still branded. Completely covers CHRN Montreal if any. City to city, Toronto is 1764 km, Montreal a further 504 km at 2268. 10 kW CHHA is easily audible here direct, far better than 50 kW stations such as 1010 CFRB, 860 CJBC, 740 CFZM since 1610 is a `clear` channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, Jan 27 at 0708, RHC English still on here, S9+20; usually this one goes off earliest, but now all the rest of The Cuban Five, 5040, 6060, 6100, 9700 are off. You never know which combination will be active. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 12030, Jan 27 at 1603 direct; 1620 and still past 1700, again today! REE dead air in Spanish toward ME, but as usual good off the back to Maryland SDR. S9/+10 while much weaker // 11685 is modulating. Recheck at 1910, 12030 is still dead air, and by now 9690 has started with VG signal and mod. Something`s always nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Some ND beacons, not new, but not often heard:

305 MCW kHz, Jan 27 at 0657 UT, RO, 150 watts at Roswell NM; tuned to 303-USB.

WORLD OF RADIO 2122 monitoring: confirmed UT Thursday January 27 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5010, S9 into Knoxville SDR; as usual gospel huxter isn`t quite finished by 0129.5 when chopped off for WRMI ID. also 9395 is VG S9+15 into Knoxville. 5010 inaudible at Aguadas, Colombia SDR where it`s aimed; out of order?

CHHA cedes 1610 modulation to CHRN --- 1610 kHz: from 0345 UT Jan 26, I have a rather strong open carrier with some hum, S Asian music and talk underneath which continues past 0400 contrary to CHHA`s year-old program schedule from Toronto which shows on weeknights: 0200 UT Tagalog, 0300 Italian, 0400 Portuguese, not until 0500 Punjabi.

Similar situation at the Milton Ont KiwiSDR, where it does not sound like a near-local signal. It certainly does tune below 1.8 MHz. Anyhow this OC must not be a new or nearby TIS.

IRCA Mexican log shows a CP as of 2021, power unknown, for a XESCAA in Zacapú, Michoacán, R. Cultural del Villa de Carbón, SA. Nothing much yet on the Brownsville SDR.

At 0406 the S Asian station with AC 514 ad and address of 595 Victoria Ave. 0421 with CHRN ID after some ads. So Montréal`s Asian station is making it thru tnx to CHHA in dead air. Both loop about the same from here, NE/SW. CHRN occasionally surges while CHHA carrier fades. Have not heard CHRN before as CHHA is right between us. CHRN is only 1 kW, while CHHA is 10; but CHRN recently added a relay in Brampton Ont on 1350.

Also confirmed Wednesday January 26 at 2200:21 on WBCQ 7490+, S7/S8 into W8BUG SDR Knoxville displaying carrier offset +185, up to +190 Hz by 2230. But measured direct at 2232, only 7490.160; then calibrating W8BUG vs WWV, claims 5000.021 and 10000.041 and varying slightly! So at 7.5 MHz it would be reading about .031 high, and WWV certainly not varying! So that makes my own measurement much more accurate. Next:

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Oceanic JBA MW carrier searches: not much lately with depressed condx, ``mid-winter anomaly``? Jan 26 at 0342, only detected are 684, 999 and 1107, all likely Spain.

I try again Jan 26 at 0710 and detect only these very weakies: 837, 1017-2, 1107, 1215-2. 1017 not a common TA, intriguing, could reactivated A3Z TONGA be participating? Certainly possible as Nuku`alofa sunset was 0627 UT. Otherwise could only be two 10 kW in Spain. However not getting any TPs on 846, 1098.

Yes, Steve, despite the dreary conditions and the recent earthquake and tsunami in Tonga, I can assure all the MWC members that 1017-A3Z's signal is not only unaffected, but stronger than ever.

TURKEY Suprisingly noted an UNKNOWN CENTRAL ASIAN Turk language stn program, today Jan 26 between 14.30 and 14.57 UT on range

9745.54, up to 9747.48 kHz, then downwards 9746.65 kHz, and up to final 9746.95 kHz.

Then at final heard TRT Kazakh service from Emirler ID. Once in November requested at 9505 kHz channel on ITU / HFCC lists. S=9+10dB signal in Delhi India.

Now at 15.14 UT on 17644.028 hefty downwards wandered, TRT Emirler in Arabic, 17720 kHz scheduled 15-16 UT, to zones 37,38W, 46 at West Africa, 500 kW 252 degrees.

Hearing Iran International TV 21 Jan in Farsi (presume from Tashkent site) at 0005 UT on 5829.95 from the SDR in Brasilia (PT2FHC) remotedly - nice signal as the GC line from Tashkent to Brasilia passes just north of Teheran. WBCQ Tests 4790 in February

That’s not a typo, in addition to its flagship frequency 7490 kHz, WBCQ will be running staggered propagation tests of 4790 kHz during February for a new entertainment program block sponsored by Angela and Allan Weiner and curated by Uncle Bill Tilford. When the regular schedule begins in March, it will be 2 hours per night of music and other entertainment from around the world.

Several new programs under development will participate.

The February tests will use archival episodes of From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot,

Marion’s Attic, Behavior Night, Rock Wave, Tom Call Theater and Jetzt Geht’s Los!, a wonderful program from Germany of Weimar-era jazz. In March these programs will be joined by several new ones from around the world.

The first week’s tests will run from February 1-5 from 6-8pm EST (2300-0100 UTC). Each following week will run an hour later to determine optimum transmission times. An eQSL will be available for reception reports sent to 4790info@gmail.com

** EGYPT. 9899.605, Jan 24 at 2108, R. Cairo, S9+30 of nothing but some hum into UTwente; by 2115 some occasional clix but no English program modulation.

9899.605, Jan 25 at 2219, 25 hours later this time with extreme unreadable distortion, not even obviously English, sounds like rubbing a balloon. At least the off-frequency has been quite stable from night to night. Off by 2245, so the SDR produces random tones among the noise. What more can be said about this saduation?

Zach Liangas and Harold Frodge reported Cairo also distorted before 2100 for the French broadcast on 9884.6. What about Portuguese scheduled to overlap from 2215 to 2330 on 9545? Also Abis but would have to be a second transmitter. AFAIK this has not been reported in a long time, nor the following imaginaries, 2330-0045 Arabic on 9730, 0045-0200 Spanish on 9900, all three for S America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY [non]. 15680, Jan 25 at 1547, S8/S9+10 sounds like German, so it can`t be DWelle --- but listed as MALgache from AWR Talata, MADAGASCAR relay! Oops, MAL there stands for Malayalam, which is a language in India, not Malaysia; as on page 499, WRTH 2022 under where else, Thailand. Up the dial, 15770 definitely in German, so can`t be DW either: WRMI must be a segment in the multilingual SMTV, which EiBi and Aoki both imagine be all-English, which seems to be the default for programmers such as SMTV, too lazy to be explicit (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11530, Jan 25 at 1550, ME music S6-S9, two carriers slightly apart, obvious double-het with offset USB tuning to 11529, i.e. Turkish jammer and Dengê Welat, but which is atop? Aoki ignores the jammer but shows D.W. site switch from PRIDNESTROVYE to FRANCE at 1500; EiBi says the change is at 1700! And also shows Turkish jammer for entire span 0600-1900 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925-USB, Jan 24 at 2257, pirate music S8-S9, ``trance``? At first I thought it was AM, but the temporary ``carrier`` must have been some drone in the music. I bet it`s not RCW, Chile, allegedly active around this daypart on this bandpart. However, switching to LSB, I can hear some weak talk mixing with remnants of the music beat. Off at 2306? No, just a pause, more music. I`m in and out checking other stuff and never catch a voice announcement, but 2312 SSTV beepery, a quick CW message my brain doesn`t switch gear into in time, but it starts with WE---; more SSTV to 2314.6*; *2315 songs, 2327 chopped and then another. Not recheck until 2347 on other receiver and now it seems really off. These confirm it`s WEZL and with an intriguing high-quality image: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,92102.0.html Presumably unrelated to the licensed WEZL, 100 kW on 103.5 FM in Charleston SC since 1971y. ** PERU. 4810, Jan 25 at 0721, not even a JBA carrier, which was about all I could get from R. Logos, nor for the past triple weeks in bandscans, last logged here during this hour on Jan 1 & 4. Of course it could still be on at other dayparts, not overnight. Last logs I find of it were Jan 11 by LOB in Brasil, Jan 13-14 by Wilkner, FL, both circa 0000 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Jan 24 at 2300, REE token English opens with Justin Coe preview including Amy Egan with Spanish idioms and expressions: that should be interesting; starts at 2308 after the news. Tho S9+15/25 on the meter, reception is not at all clear and I can`t follow it, anyway lasting only until 2311 before back to Justin to interview someone who has just returned from UKOGBANI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. [and non]. 5960, Jan 24 at 2300, no signal direct from VOT English to North America, so I may listen to Spain and WEZL. But never give up? Recheck at 2346, now it`s on S9/+10, but music just barely modulated. So that`s the defective transmitter they have chosen to run today. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. At 2356 I can recognize the JBM IS, and ID interruptions in German; 2400 timesignal 2 seconds later than WWV, and opening German, spurious unscheduled broadcast, no telling for how long. Something`s doubly erroneous at Emirler.

6125, Jan 25 at 0430, final repeat of VOT English to us is also JBM, useless despite S9/+10. Triply erroneous.

5960, Jan 25 at 2300-2309+, NO signal into UTwente, after BBC Oman closed at 2259.5. Who knows whether VOT will eventually wake up and/or modulate decently. At *2311 East Turkistan, land of genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems, cuts on Mandarin in progress and in the clear (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
