5950, UT Thu Nov 8 at 0147, trying to check whether this WRMI is now // 9395 as on the skedgrid --- 5950 with Oldies music, 9395 only a JBA carrier, so can`t be sure. 0151 ``Moon River``, 0152 Oldies-style ID (the word Oldies is never heard), 0153 VOA news, 0158 ad for cheap airline tickets with 800 number, 0200 opening RAE with multi-lingual ID reel, prior to English-only.

5950, one more WRMI check at 0558 Nov 8; very poor music, and not // 9395 fair with other music. Presumably one or both about to pick up RFI via WRN relay. Speaking of which, Mike Cooper in GA says Nov 7:

``RFI ENGLISH CUTBACK =-= At the end of today's 1400 RFI English broadcast, there was an announcement that RFI English morning broadcasts will be discontinued later this month. The 1400 "Paris Live" program will continue.`` And on Nov 8: 

``I heard the announcement again today at the end of the 1400 UT English hour. It said that effective Sunday, November 18, RFI English morning broadcasts will come to an end. The announcement encourages us to join RFI for "new Paris Live programs" at 1400 from Monday through Friday every week. This implies there will be no more weekend broadcasts. No mention was made of the daily 1600 broadcast (which is a repeat of the 1400 hour, with a fresh newscast). I have yet to find any mention of these changes on RFI's web site``

The 0600 only has been on SW, 7245 direct, new frequency for B-18 I`ve yet to check, and also on WRN via WRMI 5950. Maybe also at 1600, tho WRN sked is self-contradictory also showing New Zealand that hour M-F. Of course, 5950 at 1600 is audible only circumchobee.

Meanwhile checked at 1750 UT Nov 8, Jeff White, logged into his WRMI skedgrid spreadsheet flanked by anonymous moose, wombat, ferret and hedgehog, has entered yet another change, now showing 5950 at 00-01 with Radio France International. Before that, in same bright green, it`s generic WRN (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In
terrestrial weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar,
space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

->->->W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to
the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were

69.5 68.7 69.0.

There had been 14 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (SFI) below 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 22 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.

In 2018 there had been 187 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
active to quiet geomagnetic condition of

10 & 7,

which had been at an unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

514 & 409 km/s.

We are now in the fall/spring equinox type of HF radio wave propagation
conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly
balanced across the equator during the fall and spring equinox.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In
terrestrial weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar,
space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

->->->W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to
the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were

69.4 68.8 68.9.

There had been 13 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (SFI) below 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 21 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.

In 2018 there had been 186 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition of

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between

26 & 10,

which had been at an active to unsettled  geomagnetic condition.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum Disturbance Storm Time Index (Dst)
ranged between

-35 & -29 nT.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

456 & 397 km/s.

We are now in the fall/spring equinox type of HF radio wave propagation
conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly
balanced across the equator during the fall and spring equinox.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

** ANGUILLA. 11650-11695, 11765-11790, 11850-11880, all very approximate, Nov 6 at 2150, intermittent modulation spike spurs matching PMS on 11775. I first noticed this when checking 11880 for RHC, see CUBA. All disappear when 11775 goes off at 2156. Fortunately, so-called Caribbean Beacon usage of 11775 is quite sporadic. Such spurs had been reported previously:

``11775, Caribbean Beacon at 1726 with OC to 1729 when a sermon by the late Dr. Gene Scott came on // 13845 (WWCR) to 1731 and OC to 1732 and back to the late Dr. Gene Scott – Very Good Oct 13 – I guess Pastor Melissa Scott's satellite feed was acting up as the carrier never dropped dead but the still very dead Dr. Gene Scott kept dropping dead. Also this one was noted later acting up by showing up plus and minus 100 kHz (Mark Coady, Selwyn, Ontario, Kenwood TS440S or Ten-Tec Argonaut II and 40 and 80 meter off centre-fed dipoles, ODXA iog via DXLD) So spurs on 11675 & 11875? ** ARGENTINA [non]. 7780, Nov 6 at 2100, WRMI with disco-vamping theme music from RAE, no opening in German until 2102.5. 

7780 // much stronger 9395, Nov 6 at 2203, RAE via WRMI in Italian.

Above M-F only. Note that RAE English on 9395 UT Tue-Sat, is now scheduled one hour later at 0200-0230, as yet unconfirmed by monitoring. Nov 7 at 0200, 9395 is JBA!

And the one on 9955 has also shifted one UT hour later, RAE Portuguese at 12-13 instead of 11-12 during the DST season, no doubt confusing to Brazilians who have their own different DST changes to consider (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also GERMANY [non]; USA: WRMI

** CUBA. 6000 // 6165, UT Tue Nov 6 at 0200, RHC beginning 6-hour English span of 1-hour shows repeated over & over & over & over & over, previewing content including ``DXers Unlimited with Arnie Coro`` --- what? That`s supposed to be a Sunday+UT Monday show; has it moved, an announcer slip, or playback of yesterday instead of today`s produxion? Did not listen to any full hours following to deconfirm.Something`s always wrong at RHC. The mitweek edition should now be imminent on UT Wednesday Nov 7.

Not checked again until 0711 Nov 6, when 6165 & 6100 & 6060 & 6000 are all on, plus 6020 VP leapfrog of 6100 over 6060 another 40 kHz below. But tonight at 0716, 5040 is off, unlike last night when it accompanied the others into the sixth hour. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13740 // 13700, Nov 6 at 1452, RHC Spanish still on both, starting `Estampas de Cuba` which is not about stamps but scenery; now that the 1400 CRI English relay has moved to 15700, other transmitter on 13740 can stay on without risking collision. But at 1504 recheck, both of them are off. The exact nominal spans for each may not be known until a sesquiweek or so when Arnie issue a new delayed B-18 schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX, LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11880, Nov 6 at 2200, no signal yet; RHC seems confused, or undecided, about what to do with its second English hour of the day to ``Africa``. Had been at 2300 here during A-season, but in previous B-season shifted *earlier* to 2200. Nov 5 it was sporadic after 0000 along with 5040. Recheck at 2350 Nov 6 finds 11880 on again with poor-fair signal and barely modulated, distorted cutting in and out, like before seemingly Kriyol, while 5040 is still in Spanish. 

After 0000 UT November 7, 5040 is definitely in English, somewhat suptorted still at 0030 check. By now 11880 is a JBA carrier, maybe something else. RHC never used to run it after 2400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY [non]. 5950, Nov 6 at 0713, WRN via WRMI, African-accented interview in English so is it RFI or DW? 0715 ID in passing as DW-Africa, as sked from WRN this hour. See also USA: WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [and non]. 11815, Nov 6 a 1406, NHK World Radio in Japanese is atop CCI from TRT, within a few Hz of each other today! By 1458, however, near the end of this collision, Turkish music is dominant (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, Nov 6 at 0600:26, XEPPM goes from othermusic without a break right into choral Mexican NA, S9-S7 and then quick ID as a 100 kW station, i.e. their MW 1060 XEEP which is nominally only 20 kW at night! And I do believe it is very night. SW supposedly signs off now, but instead starts playing more music medley; what happened to the RFI Spanish news relay which used to go on at 0600 at least on MW? Manuel Méndez, Spain has the answer to the WOR iogroup, since he was listening at the exact same time, earlier and later:

``6185, Radio Educación, Ciudad de México, 0447-0619*, 06-11, Spanish and Portuguese songs, at 0600 anthem, ID “1060 AM, medio siglo de acompañar la transformación social, política y cultural de México, 100.000 watts de potencia, desde la Ciudad de México, Radio Educación, una emisora del Servicio Nacional de Comunicación Cultural, crea, colabora, comparte”, classic music, at 0607 Radio France International news in Spanish, “Las noticias de Radio Francia Internacional”, at 0619 close. ** NIGERIA [non]. 11580, Nov 6 at 1408, Radio Nigeria, Kaduna, via WRMI back to northern Nigeria, yet hefty S9+10 in reverse to OK; is playing some really wild rustic music, great fun to listen to; but at 1450-1457+ recheck it`s crapped out to dead air, WRMI doing nothing about it. This has happened before, or defaulting to fill music, Oldies, or other programming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 9690 // 11940 // 12030, Nov 6 at 2155, REE same Spanish programming now, while a previous day after 2200, 9690 // 11940 had split from 11685 // 12030 for separate shows, the latter `Africa Hoy`. Also, circa 2030 I am still hearing that low het from off-frequency Nigeria below 9690 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 11815.00, November 6 at 1406, TRT collision with NHK finds Japan the winner, today only a few Hz apart rather than ~700. But by 1458 recheck, VOT music is atop as Japan is about to sign off. The other TRT, English is also not askew, on 12035.0 with poor signal at 1406 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15580, Nov 6 at 2105, end VOA news and into ``VOA-One, all the hits and more!``, rock music, blasting in, wideband; what a pity they do not emit any classical music this way (or *any* way). 

[non] 9485, Nov 6 at 2158, similar music but not // 15580, maybe way out of sync? Much weaker. Unlike 15580, this one at 2200 plays the standard ``VOA, Washington DC`` sign-off and Yankee Doodle Dandy, as it is getting whished by DRM noise which has started centred on 9490. 9485 is really the 2130 VOA Bambara service via BOTSWANA, while 9490 is Romania starting its DRM Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Maybe receiver overload, as soon on the R75 I am not hearing 11870 but 5935 is S9+40. WWCR of course, but own schedules are contradictory. Transmitter sked effective Nov 4 shows WWCR-2 starting 5935 at 2300. But program sked still dated Oct 1! Shows 5935 starting at 0000 UT = 7 pm CDT with DGS, not Scare, and no Scare anytime on 5935 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In
terrestrial weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar,
space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

->->->W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to
the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were

69.5 68.3 68.3.

There had been 12 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (SFI) below 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 20 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.

In 2018 there had been 185 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
minor geomagnetic storming level to an unsettled geomagnetic condition of

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between

56 & 12,

which had been at a major geomagnetic storming level to an unsettled
geomagnetic condition.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum Disturbance Storm Time Index (Dst)
ranged between

-45 & -35 nT.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

625 & 505 km/s.

We are now in the fall/spring equinox type of HF radio wave propagation
conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly
balanced across the equator during the fall and spring equinox.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.
