Two men conversing, nothing resembling an ID heard, and they stop at 1753 while humcarrier stays on until 1800.5*. Previously also lasted well less than 30 or even 29 minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Don`t see how it could be anything but SIBC; unknown when may switch to 5020 and even modulate it. 9545 finally cut off at 0549.5* - but 5020 not on yet by 0611. 9545 carrier was within 1 Hz of accurate. Recheck direct at 0711, JBA carrier now on 5020, as well as 5040 presumed Vanuatu.

We had another pretty uninspiring week, sunspot wise, with the solar flux index struggling to get above 100, at least until later in the week when it touched 110 on Thursday. The good news is that, on the whole, geomagnetic conditions were quiet, which really allowed the F2 ionospheric layer to develop.

As a result, there were reports of some good 10 metre openings at times. Members of the 10m UK Net Facebook group reported FT8 openings to the west coast of the USA, as well as openings to Malawi, Indonesia and Australia.

Propquest.co.uk confirmed this, showing 10m openings over a 3,000km path throughout the day. It is worth calling CQ on 28MHz even if the band sounds closed as some openings will be fleeting and short lived.

Next week, NOAA predicts that the SFI will start in the low 100s, but then decline to the high 90s as the week progresses.

Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast for this weekend and next, but with only a maximum Kp index of four. Having said that, it would only take an Earth-facing coronal mass ejection to push the index even higher. These CMEs are very hard to predict, but unfortunately very common at this point in the cycle.

If the Sun behaves itself, we might see more openings on 10 metres this week, so do keep a look on the band.

This weekend is the ARRL International DX SSB contest, which is another opportunity to increase the count for your Worked All States award.

VHF and up:

We had a fleeting distraction of high pressure last weekend, after not quite making it during the last week, it nearly got here, but the Atlantic fronts won that battle.

So, this first weekend looks promising with another attempt to get high pressure established and a chance of some Tropo on the VHF bands.

However, like last week, approaching fronts and new areas of low pressure will soon turn next week into the unsettled variety with rain and even some snow as the milder Atlantic air meets the cold southeasterly over the eastern side of the country. These fronts with big temperature contrasts can produce some temporary enhancement of Tropo parallel to the front, so it is worth checking.

We’re still not in the new Sporadic-E season yet, but the Propquest graphs at Propquest.co.uk do occasionally pick up the odd ‘blip’, which might show up on the digital modes on 10m. As in previous weeks, don’t forget to stay in tune with solar events for chance aurora should the Kp index rise, and for the early risers some pre-dawn random meteor scatter.

The Moon’s declination is positive all week, but path losses are rising as we approach apogee this Thursday. 144MHz sky noise is low to moderate all week, peaking around 500 Kelvin on late Thursday and Friday. (rsgb.org)

Solar activity was weaker this reporting week (February 24 through
March 2) with average daily sunspot numbers weakening from 54.3 to
44, but average daily solar flux rising slightly from 95.4 to 98.5.

Geomagnetic numbers were moderate. Average daily planetary A index
declined from 9.6 to 7.3, and middle latitude index from 7.3 to 5.6.

Predicted solar flux is 110 on March 4, 108 on March 5-7, then 106,
104 and 100 on March 8-10, 99 on March 11-13, 98 on March 14, 95 on
March 15-16, then 96, 97, 98 and 99 on March 17-20, 100 on March
21-22, then 101 and 100 on March 23-24, 102 on March 25-26, then 99
and 102 on March 27-28, 105 on March 29-31, 102 on April 1-2, 101 on
April 3-4, then 100 on April 5-6, and 99 on April 7-9.

Predicted planetary A index is 12 on March 4-6, 10 on March 7, 5 on
March 8-10, then 10, 12, 8, 5 and 8 on March 11-15, 5 on March
16-17, 10 on March 18, 15 on March 19-21, 7 on March 22-24, then 5

Here is the weekly commentary from OK1HH:

"The decline in solar activity in the second half of February might
have surprised us if it were not for the information about the
increased eruptive activity on the far side of the Sun. The farside
sunspots images were taken mainly by the STEREO-A spacecraft,
starting with the huge farside explosion, when the spacecraft
recorded a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME) appearing in the
late hours of 15 February.

"One day later Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) gave us a
better view of the explosion on the far side. SOHO coronagraphs have
recorded the most dramatic CME in recent years. The activity
observed beyond the eastern edge of the solar disk looked promising
several times, but after the spot groups actually came out, we
experienced only occasional eruptions of class C.

"The Earth's magnetic field activity fluctuated irregularly and
attempts to predict further developments failed. Conditions for
shortwave propagation began to improve in early March, but this was
mainly due to seasonal changes."

BBC revives shortwave radio dispatches in Ukraine, and draws ire of Russia

As Russia is trying to cut off the flow of information in Ukraine by attacking its communications infrastructure, the British news outlet BBC is revisiting a broadcasting tactic popularized during World War II: shortwave radio.

The BBC said this week that it would use radio frequencies that can travel for long distances and be accessible on portable radios to broadcast its World Service news in English for four hours a day in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and in parts of Russia.

“It’s often said truth is the first casualty of war,” Tim Davie, director-general of the BBC, said in a statement. “In a conflict where disinformation and propaganda is rife, there is a clear need for factual and independent news people can trust.”

On Tuesday, Russian projectiles struck the main radio and television tower in Kyiv. Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine’s defense minister, wrote on Twitter that Russia’s goal was “to break the resistance of the Ukrainian people and army,” starting with “a breakdown of connection” and “the spread of massive FAKE messages that the Ukrainian country leadership has agreed to give up.”

Shortwave radio has been a go-to vehicle to reach listeners in conflict zones for decades, used to deliver crackling dispatches to soldiers in the Persian Gulf war, send codes to spies in North Korea and pontificate through the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. But more modern forms of radio along with the internet eventually pushed shortwave out of favor; the BBC retired its shortwave transmissions in Europe 14 years ago.

Over the last week of February, viewership of BBC’s Ukrainian language site more than doubled from a year earlier to 3.9 million visitors, the broadcaster said on Wednesday. The BBC also provides news coverage in the country via its website, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Viber and Espreso TV.

Millions of Russians are also turning to the BBC, the broadcaster said. The audience for the BBC’s Russian language news website reached a record 10.7 million in the past week, more than tripling its weekly average so far in 2022, the company said. Visitors to BBC’s English language website from within Russia surged 252 percent to 423,000.

Within the country, BBC also posts updates on Telegram, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Other Western news outlets have also experienced a surge in viewership. Visits to The Guardian’s digital platforms from Russian and Ukrainian audiences were up 180 percent from January.

The BBC’s coverage has led to complaints from Russian officials. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, said during a briefing broadcast by RT, the Kremlin-backed Russian media outlet, that Russia was the victim of “unprecedented information terrorism” that was “devoted to discrediting Russian actions” and “creating hysteria around Ukrainian events.”

The BBC “plays a determined role in undermining the Russian stability and security,” Ms. Zakharova said, without providing evidence.

Early Friday, BBC’s Russian service reported problems accessing its site in Russia.

Rabbitears.info shows it`s direxional toward the NE, but thisaway very much off the side close to a null, belying it being one of the top `Tulsa` stations decoding here. Millions of Russians turn to BBC News
People in Russia are turning to BBC News in their millions for factual independent information about the war in Ukraine, new figures show.

The audience for the BBC’s Russian language news website more than tripled its year-to-date weekly average, with a record reach of 10.7m people in the last week (compared to 3.1m).

In English, bbc.com visitors in Russia were up 252% to 423,000 last week.

Digital live pages, giving people updates, explanation, and reports from expert journalists on the ground, are proving hugely popular.
The live page in Russian covering the invasion was the most visited site across the whole of the BBC World Service’s non-English language services, with 5.3m views.

Audiences for the Ukrainian language site more than doubled year-to-date, with a reach of 3.9m in the past week (compared to 1.7m) and the audience for bbc.com increased 154% in Ukraine.

These numbers represent direct traffic to BBC websites, and are likely to rise significantly when social media audience figures are factored in.

In total, 77.4m unique visitors consumed BBC online coverage of Ukraine in English in the first five days of the invasion, with almost 200 million views of the live page on Ukraine.

Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, says: “It’s often said truth is the first casualty of war. In a conflict where disinformation and propaganda is rife, there is a clear need for factual and independent news people can trust – and in a significant development, millions more Russians are turning to the BBC.

“We will continue giving the Russian people access to the truth, however we can.”

As part of its resilience operation to ensure news is available in Ukraine and Russia, the BBC has also stepped up services on other platforms. It has launched two new shortwave frequencies in the region for four hours of World Service English news a day. These frequencies can be received clearly in Kyiv and parts of Russia.

Tim Davie paid tribute to journalists working in Ukraine and Russia, saying: “Brave and committed journalists – from a range of news organisations – are doing vital work reporting events in Ukraine. Not only those who have travelled there to report, but journalists for whom Ukraine is home, including our talented colleagues in the BBC’s Ukrainian service. Events are moving quickly. Our program schedule had been adjusted slightly to allow new programs from 19-23:10 (approx) CET and added more news coverage on 1323 kHz. I see that 7290 has been re-inserted into the program sked at 19-20 UT only, at least on the visible days, along with 1323 on a longer span. Let`s hear if 7290 be axually on air today. And go to the link about IRRS` power increase --- never specified -- on 1323; but WRTH 2022 showed it originally only 5/1 kW. ``Beamed to the war zone`` -- does that mean a direxional antenna?

Got to UTwente just in time March 1 at 1957 when there were 2797 users, and on 7290 heard a bit of an Irish song before it froze up. Off the air by the time I got it back but that must have been IRRS reactivated via Bulgaria. Later checking 1323 kHz via nearby Noale SDR, at 2038 closing TUC Radio, maybe their latest podcast about Ukraine crisis: https://tucradio.org/section/podcasts/newest-podcasts/ then `Power Minute` of gospel-huxtering. At 2059 someshow cut off, ID, 2100 `Feature Story News` and `UN News`

** U S A. Re my comments about WBCQ 4790 and the new Radio Angela, Bill Tilford responds:

While I dislike the CODAR issue more than anyone, I'm not sure I otherwise agree with the notion of 4790 being WBCQ's worst frequency in terms of coverage reach. Both in tests and the first night's official broadcast, 4790 has terrestrially outperformed 7490 in parts of the midwestern US and clobbered it in Europe, where 4790 will often arrive in parts of Eastern Europe as a quite listenable breakfast show as well as the US and Canada. Yes, there are local bad zones, but that is true with many frequencies. As to Latin America, we'll see what coming months bring (or not). 7490's secret weapon has been its webcasts, which in the context of this discussion don't count, along with its somewhat better reach out west and down south. As a transatlantic frequency, 4790 appears to be the better option, azimuth notwithstanding.

As to Encore, our own schedule was not for the purpose of stealing listeners from it - I respect and enjoy that program myself. But it does have multiple repeats throughout the week (unlike WBCQ Concert Hall, which plays once) with the same remote web sdr possibilities that some of our listeners will need to use to bring in Radio Angela's programs. There are miscellaneous reasons, some related to production schedules, why the other programs in the RA schedule are pencilled in where they are, and for now Sunday is what makes sense for WBCQ Concert Hall. We are also doing longer-form works (whole operas and symphonies) than Encore due to the luxury of a two hour slot, so it's not really the same material. Whether that works to our advantage or Encore's at any point in time will depend upon a listener's mood and preferences. Hopefully we will both thrive. And, for those on the horns of a dilemma, there are, as mentioned, recorders. Since neither program is pay-per-listen, let us instead be happy that this much classical is back on the airwaves between the two. A much better problem to have than "gee, there's nothing on..."

Europe turns off Russian TV channels and broadcasts Ukraine's instead

International and local providers are turning off Russian news channels. Meanwhile, they started to broadcast Ukraine's "United News" marathon [Ukraine's major news channels have joined efforts to broadcast news continuously around the clock].

This has been reported by 1+1 Media press service.

Earlier, Ukraine's Ministry of Culture and Ukrainian media groups have called on international television providers to shut down Russian news channels. More than 20 local providers from Poland, Australia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Canada, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Germany, as well as a number of international corporations, have already responded to the request.

Since February 26, they have shut down propaganda channels on satellite, cable networks, OTT platforms, and other resources. In their place, many providers have started broadcasting the "United News" marathon, a consolidated broadcast of Ukrainian television channels covering Russia's war and aggression.

"To date, more than 20 companies with huge audiences have refused to broadcast Russian TV channels. We are still in talks with many more and are confident that the result will be positive. Personal financial circumstances beyond my control recently made it necessary for me to discontinue broadcasts of my programs from stations in Europe, and Channel 292 has made the wonderful gesture of throwing us a going-away party – a 16 hour marathon of some of our favorite From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot episodes on 6070 kHz on March 8 from 0800-2400 CET (0700-2300 UTC). Working with the station and interacting with its listeners has been a joy these past few years, and I am deeply humbled by this act of generosity. I hope to be able to return to broadcasting from Europe some day. In the meantime, I have personally selected some favorite episodes of both shows from the past few years for this special event. Let us make the most of this bittersweet moment.
