Clone artigianale del HeathKit CR1- Crystal Receiver

In questo periodo di "lookdown" qualcosa dovevo ben fare, mi è venuto in mente di donare una semplice radio a cristallo ( ecologica ante litteram perché non necessita di corrente ) mi aveva impressionato un gioiellino dell'HeathKit il CR-1 Crystal Receiver (Khz.640 -1440) che avevo avuto tra le mani grazie alla cortesia di Dino 12 HNX noto Collezionista e cultore appassionato delle radio a cristallo di Galena.

Per chi non lo sapesse il noto marchio HeathKit (USA) creato per Radioamatori e Hobbysti veniva distribuito in Italia dalla "LARIR Agente Generale per l'Italia, V.le Premuda - Milano" era disponibile in scatola di montaggio o già assemblato pagando il supplemento. Il Crystai Receiver CR-1 era dedicato ai principianti con un costo abbordabile, credo ne abbiano venduti anche a Istituti Tecnici per scopo didattico.

La costruzione dei CR-1 è semplice grazie alle istruzioni in Italiano, anche perché fa parte più sofisticata e cioè la bobina ( due avvolgimenti distanziati avvolti a gruppetti a nido d'ape, uno in senso opposto all'altro su un tubetto di cartone bachelizzato con nuclei in ferrite regolabili ) è già avvolta e pronta per essere saldata. Completano il tutto: due condensatori variabili da circa PF.500, due condensatori fissi da PF.360 una resistenza da K.24, un auricolare piezoelettrico, uno Switch e il cuore del piccolo ricevitore un moderno Diodo al germanio 1N34 che sostituisce il classico ma obsoleto "Cristallo di Galena". Il tutto è racchiuso in una bella scatolina di plastica color grigio scuro con impresso "HeathKit Crystal Receiver CR-1" e le scritte: Antenna, Band, Tune e lettere alfabetiche poste sotto le boccole indicanti le prese per Antenna, Terra e Phones.

Detto fatto, copio lo schema elettrico reperibile in Internet e i dati per avvolgere la 2 bobine: A) = Antenna Coli, composta da circa 140 spire di filo Litz o in alternativa filo smaltato diametro mm.0,4 avvolta a gruppetti, tipo nido d'ape, su una lunghezza di cm.3 su un tubetto in cartone del diametro di circa mm.9 atto a consente di far scorrere all'interno una bacchetta di ferrite ciò per trovare la miglior resa ( lunghezza totale del tubetto circa cm.12 ). Bobina B) Detector coi! = 90 spire dello stesso filo e diametro, con presa intermedia alla 30° spira, avvolta con lo stesso procedimento della prima, su una lunghezza di cm.2,5. Notate bene che questa seconda bobina va avvolta tassativamente in senso contrario a come è stata avvolta la bobina A. Notare che tra le due bobine va tenuto uno spazio di cm.1 ( le foto sono esplicative). La costruzione l'ho fatta in una scatola dí cartone irrobustendo il coperchio con 3 fogli di cartoncino incollati con abbondanti pennellate di Vinavil, lo stesso dicasi per il tubetto in cartone della bobina, sagomato direttamente sulla bacchetta di ferrite che deve poter scorrere all'interno per regolarla (una volta per tutte) per la miglior resa, circa il Diodo ne ho impiegato uno al germanio di fabbricazione Europea, inoltre ho modificato l'uscita prevista per l'auricolare Piezoelettrico, eliminando la resistenza ed mettendo al suo posto un condensatore da PF 2.700 (meglio se a carta) cid per poter usare una cuffia elettrodinamica da 2000 Ohm.

Lo Switch serve a collegare ìn parallelo al variabile (Antenna Tune) le 2 capacità aggiuntive di PF 360 + 360 per ampliare a piacimento la capacità complessiva per avere il miglior accordo di antenna su tutta la gamma da Khz.640 a 1440. Il Detector Tune serve per la sintonia. A ricevitore ultimato, collegata una antenna filare da circa mt.10 e la presa di terra (il vecchio buon calorifero) si cerca una stazione e si fa scorrere la ferrite all'interno dei tubetto delle 2 bobine per trovare il miglior accoppiamento per la massima uscita in cuffia, manovrando i due variabili con mano ferma e la necessaria calma e con i'uso del Band Switch i risultati saranno stupefacenti. La RAI ( Khz. 900) si sente fortissimo anche di giorno e di notte giungono stazioni Europee, ciò è veramente un incanto, peccato che il mio clone sia molto meno fascinoso dell'originale che è veramente un piccolo gioiello. Chi vuole cimentarsi in questa realizzazione ( le foto sono esplicative ) in poche ore e magari con ancora un po' di colla appiccicata alle dita si potrà divertire con poco e soprattutto fare un ascolto ecologicamente sostenibile, a Kìlometro zero e senza olio di palma, ma un po' di pasta salda ce la mettiamo però.....! Auguri a tutt'Al ampi decisamente migliori ed anche di ottima salute!

A cuore aperto: BROWNIE mod. 2 (1925)

Oggi mettiamo a cuore aperto, sul tavolo operatorio, un altro piccolo ma storico apparecchietto a cristallo, risalente al 1925, dall'aspetto senz'altro particolare. Venduta al prezzo di 10 scellini e sei pence, la BROWNIE mod.2, costruita in Inghilterra dalla BROWNIE WIRELESS COMPANY venne brevettata nel 1925 con numero di brevetto 9117/25.

Il mobiletto è in ebanite stampata con pressa idraulica da 60 tonnellate e tutte le parti metalliche sono in ferro placcato nichel. Questa costruzione ne faceva, a dire del costruttore, "un apparecchio robusto, di prezzo contenuto ed in grado di sopportare le più avverse condizioni climatiche"(?). Anche in questo apparecchio non sono presenti componenti elettronici di alcun tipo.

La sintonia è ottenuta tramite una bobina su cui scorre un cursore metallico, collegato alla manopola con indice e graduazione, posta nella parte più bassa del mobiletto. La bobina è alloggiata nel fondo del mobiletto ed è raggiungibile togliendo il coperchio inferiore, in cartone pressato, fissato all'apparecchio con "...supporti antivibrazione..."

Accanto alla manopola di sintonia, troviamo i due morsetti per la cuffia. Nella parte superiore del mobiletto si trova l'attacco per il detector a pirite/zincite denominato PERMATECTOR perché una volta regolato, non necessitava di ulteriori ritocchi.

Nella parte culminante troviamo i morsetti di antenna e terra e l'innesto per la bobina addizionale, (nel nostro caso l'apparecchio è giunto a me con una bobina LEWCOS per i 150 Khz), che serviva ad ascoltare la stazione ad onda lunga di DAVENTRY, la famosa 5XX che iniziò le trasmissioni proprio nel 1925 o quella della TOUR EIFFEL, intorno ai 1600 metri.

La bobina originale BROWNIE era venduta al prezzo di 2 Scellini e 9 pence ed erano disponibili bobine per varie lunghezze d'onda.

La sintonia, senza bobina, copriva un ristretto range intorno ai 600 metri, utile per ascoltare 2LO, emittente BBC di Londra.

Anche questo apparecchio ha, come gli altri, il marchio di approvazione BBC.

Era previsto anche un amplificatore di bassa frequenza a due valvole che poteva permettere l'uso di un piccolo altoparlante a tromba o la connessione di più cuffie. Era venduto al prezzo di 63 Scellini.

La cuffia è una ERPEES di costruzione tedesca risalente alla seconda metà degli anni 20 che ha la particolarità di avere le membrane risonanti montate direttamente all'interno dei coperchi. Ruotando il coperchio, si trova il miglior punto di risonanza acustica e, trovato questo, va regolato l'anello scorrevole che fissa questa posizione e viene bloccato tramite un fermo a vite. In questo modo si poteva compensare la resa dei due auricolari, bilanciando anche eventuali difetti di udito dell'utilizzatore.

La prova di ascolto, con amplificazione esterna, ha dato un insperato risultato: nonostante l'emittente di Roma sia su 1107 Khz e quindi molto lontana dai 600 metri o dai 1600 che l'apparecchio può ricevere, con antenna filare di 42 metri e bobina inserita, ho ricevuto Roma 1, sui 1107 Khz. Regolato il PERMATECTOR e la sintonia, ho avuto un buon ascolto, come da video.

Spero che anche questo apparecchio sia d'interesse per gli amici appassionati.

Very strange Radio Verdad "4055 kHz via satellite"

Radio Truth's Omnitronix 1000 burned out on the fifth of December 2020 by 10:00 o'clock in the morning. Both power modules were burned out, so, Radio Truth is out of air ever since.

We fixed Module 'A' today and I went to test it. It worked alright during five minutes, and then, a fuse burned out. We plan to review tomorrow.

Module 'B' has a card with a burned area on the printed circuit. It may need a new card, or rebuilding the old one.

So, this is the reason why we are off air on short wave.

However, we are on the air of Internet through our Web Site www.radioverdad.org

Beginning yesterday, we are also transmitting on Radio Truth International via satelite on the same frequency of 4055 Khz, and we need your reports if you get to tune it.

** ERITREA [non]. 17545+, Sat Dec 12 at *1529, I think a JJBBA carrier may cut on as I am QRX for Bayto Yaikl. After breakfast by 1541 it`s surged to JBA, enough to try to measure it, but as I toggle lower/upper BFO to compute the center, it keeps fluxuating roughly 17545.05 to 17545.07. Anyhow, it`s still active on Saturdays as well as Wednesdays.

Then to remotes, as I also want to try TDOA DFing since there is still doubt whether site really be ISSoudun, FRANCE. There are far too many in Europe, too few in Africa & Mideast on the Kiwi roster. Little or nothing at Qatar, Canary, Ukraine, while TWR RSA is getting it well, S7-S9, but you need at least two, preferably three or more.

RSA in SAM mode also shows carrier Hz offset constantly fluxuating plus: 62.1, *67.6, 64.7, 61.7, 57.0, 51.7, 45.0, *36.8, 42.6, 47.6, 51.5, 54.9, 58.3, 61.3, 63.7, 65.8, *67.4, 65.6, 62.2, 58.5, 53.2, 47.2, *37.7, 41.0, etc., etc. I`ve starred the maxima and minima, 67.6 & 36.8 in one cycle, 67.4 & 37.7 in the second. Already wrapping up around 1554 citing kHz, to cutoff at 1558* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Radio Taiwan International su 9610 kHz alle 10.30 UTC in coreano dal 13 dicembre

A partire da domenica 13 dicembre, Radio Taiwan International riprenderà le trasmissioni a onde corte in lingua coreana.

Durante una cerimonia tenutasi oggi nella sede della stazione radio, il presidente del consiglio di RTI, Lu Ping, ha evidenziato i molti aspetti comuni che Taiwan e la Corea del Sud hanno in comune e ha evidenziato lo scambio audiovisivo e culturale con cui entrambi i paesi possono imparare gli uni dagli altri.

Il ripristino delle trasmissioni in coreano attraverso l'onda corta è una nuova pietra miliare, che rafforzerà ulteriormente le relazioni tra i due paesi.

Glenn Hauser logs December 11-12, 2020

** BRAZIL [and non]. 11905-11910-11915, Fri Dec 11 at 2210, at the Brasília KiwiSDR, main signal is in AM mode, Japanese, i.e. NHK from the antipodes as already scheduled on 11910, tho a bit of DRM noise underneath. When switched to DRM reception, no decode of course. RNA`s second frequency choice is not so good either. The local SDR used to get enough DRM signal to decode, but not as well as further.

I soon switch to Bonaire SDR: now that`s getting RNA-DRM, with SNR 14+ dB, S7-S8, and 13.06 kbps, instead of 14.06 as before. The particular DRM mode has changed as someone noted. I`m checking now, whether `A Voz do Brasil` is on this transmission since the format of Nacional FM 96.1 is mostly music? Yes, it is: 2224 a snippet of `White Xmas` --- really, in the tropix? and EBC ID. 2225 a segment produced by government Justice Dept., R. Justiça. Now the S/N has climbed to 17, S7-S8; concludes with ``até segunda``, i.e. back on Monday; 2230 switch to `O Jornal do Senado`, also até segunda, so AVDB is made up of segments by various government entities. I wonder if everything has to be pro-Bolsonaro? I`m not going to listen enough to decide. Recheck at 2316, now classical music which I have not encountered before on FM 96.1, instead of MPB; but at SNR around 15 is suffering dropouts (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SCOTLAND [non]. 5800, UT Sat Dec 12 at 0300, once again this week, WRMI is giving `Encore` a non-encore, but rather all the other airings are, as this is the first one, and a time Brice Avery continues to overlook? in his publicity; a secret bonus? I listen to most of it now so I don`t have to catch it some other time. I happen to have the Anna, Texas SDR running to check for KVOH 9975, so switch it to 5800 --- not so good, somewhat noisy, while Brasília would be better for this if not RNA itself. At least `Encore` is never in DRM, so no dropouts! However, via Anna there are several, like seven, brief interruptions to the classical music by YL gospel huxter in Spanish, and stronger on the meter, S9+25 vs S9+5, yet the tuner keeps displaying 5800! I hasten to switch back to Brasil whether it`s really happening to 5800 WRMI? Not quick enough, but I don`t think so. Occurs again at 0354. Must be a defect at Anna, which is north of Dallas on the way to Sherman. Or someone in Anna is messing with 5800 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

(7490.1v), UT Sat Dec 12 at 0104, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW` starts with ``a dear friend passed away``, but apparently not a human, rather the Arecibo radio-telescope, which AHW also dealt with last week, but this week keeps on about it past 0120, how important it is/was for scientific research, but somehow mixes in racism and politix, blaming `Moonbats` and the government for not spending more on it. 0126 anti-obesity; blaming China for inventing COVID-19 since previous virus did not do enough damage, and this one is ``smarter``.

Even in wake of latest SCOTUS ruling, AHW is sure Trump will get the next 4 years --- ``or we`ll never have an accurate presidential elexion again`` [???]. Angela`s comments mix in, but she tends to yell more than Allan, distorting her modulation, and generally sounds even more radical than Allan.

0136 he timestamps this as 11 December, YOOL 2020; from Studio 9 in central FL where I think he said they had some frost; judges temp by how little clothing Angela is wearing. Still looking for 1 or 2 or more good engineers to hire for work at Monticello on the SuperStation. WHRI takeover? ** U S A. 17775-, re KVOH still missing in my last report, Ray Robinson replies at 0137 UT Sat Dec 12 on the WOR iog:

``Hi, Glenn. It's not a power issue - that came back late Tuesday night [UT Dec 9]. And BTW, it hasn't quite been a full week. We were on last Saturday as normal. But, with regard to this week, I can't answer, because I don't really know. Our engineer has been trying to get to the root cause of a shorting problem in the transmitter, that he thought was fixed yesterday, but obviously wasn't. Shows Tue-Sun *0000-0300 UT Spanish, 0300-0700* UT English, yet heading says until 3 AM Pacific = 1100 UT! I replied:

``Ray, Since 0150 UT Saturday to 0200, checking remotes in Texas and Bonaire, no signal on 9975. Is it really on? Have not checked my own radio yet. Which transmitter is that, the Shoffner-Harris? I suppose the sked days of week refer to US not UT -- so Wavescan would be UT Sun & Tue at 0300, right, not UT Sat & Mon? Glenn``

No 9975 signal either here when checked at 0218. Ray replied: ``Hi, Glenn. No, KVOH is not on (although it should be!). And, yes, the sched days are North American, not UT. Ray.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

On December 31, Radio Channel 292 will present a 2-hour special, Neujahrsgrüsse von Radio Channel 292 featuring segments from nine different music programs with classical, jazz, rock, Cuban and volksmusik from 2300-0100 UTC on 3955 (10kw), 6070 (100kw from Moosbrunn) and 9670 (10kw) hHz.   It will repeat on all three frequencies at 10kw from 0900-1100 UTC on January 1.   Time for the 10kw transmissions was donated by the station. Encore will be providing the classical music.

** AZORES [non]. 13306-USB, Dec 11 at 1553, GLO9680 ID repeatedly in 2-way comms, aircraft to ground I assume, also re-referring to position 37N, 40W. Search on call leads right to a flight tracking site for today, from MCO Orlando to SMA Santa Maria - Açores. Which fits for approaching Azores from WSW. Company is GOL despite callsigns as GLO----. EiBi shows 13306 as a North-Atlantic ATC frequency shared by ground stations New York, Gander, Keflavik, Shannon as well as Santa Maria.

Santa Maria is a minor island; why is it the major air terminal instead of Ponta Delgada on the next major island, São Miguel? Lajes, NATO base, is on a third island, Terceira (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 392-MCW kHz, Dec 11 at 0712 UT, ND beacon ML -- at times seems like a third letter but there is definitely a dash so it`s not plain old 25-watt ML in Monroe, Louisiana, but 500-watt ML in La Malbaie - Charlevoix, Québec. La Malbaie is on the left bank of the St-Laurent, not quite as far as Rivière-du-Loup on the right.

326-MCW kHz, Dec 11 at 0723 UT, NDB YQK, which is 200 watts in Kenora, Ontario (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 7435, Dec 11 at 1435, romantic Chinese songs, S9+10/20 and one of best signals on band, announcement in Russian and more song, as CRI sked this hour from SZG site at 37 degrees, i.e. for DVR/DBP and carrying on far beyond to us. Simulsked is CRI Nepali hour westward from Kunming, but no sign of it here. How considerate of the ChiCom to double up, reducing overall frequency occupancy (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 5980, Dec 11 at 0249, vs Cuban pulse jamming against no Martí, I heard two other weak stations mixing, and they are not WWCR and WWCR as 5890 is not on yet so cannot leap over 5935. One music and one talk; I soon recognize the music as IRAN`s IS, yes, as the two-sesquihour Spanish service is just concluding; and Aoki/NDXC shows the other must be AWR in another PJ, Punjabi via AUSTRIA. I should think the Spanish from Sirjan would be a bit of a QRM problem in the Punjab, as well as the 0200 Urdu in the Pakistan; counting on skip-distance factor, azimuth? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, Dec 11 at 0251, RHC is S9+10/20 but as usual on this transmitter, just barely modulated: I can make out the news sounder and presumed English. Something`s always wrong at RHC, but not complaining since that facilitates my adjacent 5995 & 6005 logs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ERITREA [non]. 17545+v, Dec 11 at 1543, no signal from Bayto Yaikl, so Friday is another DOW it is inoperative via France; next to reconfirm whether it still be Saturdays from 1530 as well as Wednesdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, re TGAV missing, finally word about this received from Dr Madrid on Dec 11:

Transmitter Radio Truth Dec 11 at 3:33 PM - Véalo en Español al final

Dear Friends of Radio Truth: Radio Truth's Omnitronix 1000 burned out on the fifth of December 2020 by 10:00 o'clock in the morning. Both power modules were burned out, so, Radio Truth is out of air ever since.

We fixed Module 'A' today and I went to test it. It worked alright during five minutes, and then, a fuse burned out. We plan to review tomorrow. Module 'B' has a card with a burned area on the printed circuit. It may need a new card, or rebuilding the old one. So, this is the reason why we are off air on short wave.

The ``satellite broadcast on 4055`` refers to an unexplained method supposed to give worldwide coverage which he has been expecting for years, and which we think is a scam (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 13785+, Dec 11 at 1356, JBA carrier slightly offset+, so UAE? Kuwait? Close, but Aoki/NDXC shows the only 13785 is ``R. Saudi``, in Arabic at 1200-1357, whew, almost missed it; and before 1200 is on ``13780``. No time to measure it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 6005, Dec 11 at 0329, Arabic about Akhbar, or is it Akbar, and Radio Tamazuj ID, 0330 `Horn of Africa` music, S9+10/20. Site? MADAGASCAR at 0330-0430. //? I can`t remember but EiBi shows 7315 France and 11650 also Madagascar. S.S. isn`t really in the HoA, the Somalia elbow, but close enough. 0344 more IDs in passing. Despite its JBM, 6000 RHC is so strong that it still helps to tune to 6005-USB. Could be worse if fully modulating and splattering like it does later on 6100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN. 6865.117, Dec 11 at 1410, VP S3-S4 in Chinese? talk, as Sound of Hope is listed by EiBi on 6865.1; no jamming which would likely be on 6865.0. Comparing to CNR1 jammers on 6125 & 6070, does not match (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN [and non]. 6075, Dec 11 at 1421, CNR1 jammer mixing with something else in Chinese, i.e. target RTI. // 6125, CNR1 only non-jammer and probably also an RTI/CNR1 mix on 6180. When previously heard until 1600*, 6075 was CNR1 only with no sign of Taiwan, off earlier? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** THAILAND. 6765-USB, Dec 11 at 1359, multi-tone IS, 1400 announcement, maybe English but only made out ``kilohertz`` and off. Not in Aoki/NDXC, but in EiBi as Bangkok Meteorological Radio on 6765.1, never specifying SSB where applicable. Might have been .1 but in very weak SSB with no carrier it`s hard to pinpoint; whew, almost missed it. Sked is 1200-1400 and two-hour broadcasts alternating with one hour off thruout the 24. // 8743 but nothing by the time I tune by. Used to QSL nicely and maybe still does despite elimination from WRTH years ago as too utility, I guess (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 326-MCW kHz, Dec 11 at 0719 UT, ND beacon ODX, 25 watts at Ord, Nebraska. Ord is in central NE between Elyria and Scotia. A nice ``DX`` catch, but why not ``ORD``? There is no such NDB in Chicago (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7457-USB, Dec 11 at 1430, AFA4UY, AF MARS net inquiring about relays; net designator is 4TX2 uttered by next station, stronger, AFS43O, all fonetikaly; latter call is strange format, and ending in letter O, not number zero.

Propagation News – 13 December 2020

We said last week that it would be hard to predict what would happen over the next seven days – and that turned out to be true. The coronal hole we mentioned last week didn’t really amount to much, and sunspot region 2790 didn’t either. As a result, the solar flux index fell to 82 by Thursday, with region 2790 shrinking and with no other sunspots on the visible face of the Sun.

A B-class solar flare on the 7th of December resulted in a coronal mass ejection that impacted the Earth in the early hours of the 10th. This pushed the Kp index to four, but the effects were relatively short-lived and the index was back down to one by midday. Propquest’s ionosonde readings reflected the CME’s effects in the early hours, but showed the MUF over a 3,000km path was back to 21-24MHz by mid-morning. There were other minor solar flare events during the week, but nothing as intense as the flare on the 7th.

There was DX around last week. Bob, VP8LP in the Falkland Islands and numerous Brazilian stations have been audible in the afternoon on 10m FT8. Australia and New Zealand have both been workable on 20m FT8 in the morning as well.

NOAA got its SFI prediction pretty much spot-on last week. It said we could expect to see it in the low 80s by the end of the week and so it was! Next week NOAA says it will be around 86, but we can expect poorer conditions around the 18th and 19th due to a geomagnetic disturbance. Region 2783 returns again this week, but the prediction is that is unlikely to be that active.

So this week, focus your DXing efforts at the beginning of the week as conditions may be worse by next weekend.

VHF and up:

It will be another quiet week for Tropo propagation, with the next few days looking to be once again dominated by unsettled weather. Low pressure mostly to the northwest of Britain will feed a succession of fronts and bands of rain across the country. This makes rain scatter a probable mode for the GHz bands, and not much chance to cheer up any Tropo operators. It may also be rather breezy in some areas and mostly milder again.

The Geminids meteor shower is well under way and peaks tomorrow on the 14th, so expect high activity on the digimode frequencies on all the VHF bands. If you have 100 watts and a beam on two or six metres, why not try an SSB sked at the peak? All that chanting of callsigns and “Roger, Roger” can be very therapeutic! The high ZHR of 150 means that this is quite possible. Also, look for signal bursts around 49.750MHz from the few remaining Eastern European TV carriers, and on 143.050MHz for the Graves bistatic radar from France.

The Moon is at minimum declination on Tuesday so there are short visibility windows all week. Losses are low with the Moon at perigee today. 144MHz sky noise is high and increasing and the Sun and Moon are very close tomorrow and low, not falling below 500 kelvin until Wednesday.

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity quieted this week, with the average daily sunspot number declining from 57.6 to 28.9, and the average daily solar flux softening from 108.1 to 91.9. On December 8 – 10, the sunspot number was 11 on each day, which is the minimum non-zero sunspot number.

Sunspot group 2786 provided some great activity, but it is about to rotate off the sun’s visible surface. But a look at STEREO satellite images on Thursday night (December 10) shows some magnetic complexity about to became geo-effective from the sun’s southern hemisphere. This could mean more great conditions.

The average daily planetary A index went from 6.4 to 4.4, and average daily middle latitude A index went from 5.6 to 3.1.

Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is 82 on December 11 – 12; 84 on December 13 – 14; 80 on December 15 – 18; 92 on December 19 – 24; 94 on December 25 – 28; 96, 94, and 92 on December 29 – 31; 90 on January 1 – 4; 88 on January 5 – 7; 86 on January 8 – 11; 84, 85, and 88 on January 12 – 14; 92 on January 15 – 20, and 94 on January 21 – 24.

The forecast for the planetary A index shows 12, 8, and 8 on December 11 – 13; 5 on December 14 – 18; 20 and 8 on December 19 – 20; 5 on December 21 – 22; 8, 10, and 8 on December 23 – 25; 5 on December 26 – January 5; 10 and 8 on January 6 – 7; 5 on January 8 – 13; 12, 20, and 8 on January 14 – 16; 5 on January 17 – 18; 8, 10, and 8 on January 19 – 21, and 5 on January 22 – 24.

Daily updates of these numbers are available, typically after 2120 UTC, from the Space Weather Prediction Center.

A coronal mass ejection on December 7 was expected to spark a geomagnetic storm on December 10-11, which is why the planetary A index was predicted at 40, 25, 8, and 8 on December 10-13. This was revised to the forecast of December 10, above. Minnesota Public Radio aired a story on what happened and how we missed the storm.

The ARRL 10-Meter Contest is this weekend, much anticipated because of recent increased solar activity. I was concerned about the forecast from earlier in the week, but now it looks like good conditions are expected. Around this time each December, sporadic-E activity is possible, as well as enhancement from the Geminids meteor shower. This year the shower does not peak until the day after the contest, December 14, but it’s already under way.

Here’s the geomagnetic activity forecast for December 11 – January 5 from F.K. Janda. OK1HH. The geomagnetic field will be:

quiet on December 13, (29,) January 12, 4
quiet to unsettled on December 1416, 21, January 5
quiet to active on December 12, 1718, 2223, 26, 30
unsettled to active December (11, 24,) 2526, (27,) 31, (January 3)
active to disturbed December 19 (-20,) 28
solar wind will intensify on December (11, 19,) 2022, (23,)
27 (28-29, January 5)

Sunspot numbers for December 3 – 9 were 40, 38, 42, 25, 35, 11, and 11, with a mean of 28.9. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 102.9, 95.8, 99.9, 90.9, 89.5, 82.4, and 82.1, with a mean of 91.9. Estimated planetary A indices were 3, 2, 5, 6, 3, 5, and 7, with a mean of 4.4. Middle latitude A index was 1, 1, 4, 4, 2, 4, and 6, with a mean of 3.1.

World Music Radio and Radio208 new frequency test

World Music Radio (WMR) has a new frequency in the 19 mb:  15790 kHz. (Previously on 15805) On the air every Saturday and Sunday 0700-2000 UTC. Power is 200 W into a 3 element yagi (due South).

Testing from today Friday if everything works ok. I will probably leave the transmitter on all weekend - from now continuously until Sunday 20 UTC.

Reception reports are welcome to World Music Radio, PO Box 112, DK-8960 Randers SØ, Denmark (for a printed QSL-card, pennant and stickers - please enclose return postage 2 IRCs or 5 euro if you can) or via email to wmr@wmr.dk (for an eQSL).  Please note that reception reports using remote receivers are not QSLed. I try to reply to all reports within 1-2 months. 5840 kHz (24h) will be changed to 5930 kHz (0700-1745) before the end of December 2020. 927 kHz (24h) is due on the air in January 2021.

Radio208 has transmitter problems. 5805 kHz (250W) from Hvidovre went silent late on November 22nd. Back on the air on the new frequency of 5970 kHz (200W) December 9th - but nothing on December 10th. Today December 11th from 1030 UTC the transmitter is back on the air, but we have lowered power to 50 Watt only, hoping that the transmitter can work with this. So Radio208 now on 5970 kHz (50W) daily 0700-1600 UTC.
1440 kHz (24h) remains on the air from Ishøj, Copenhagen.
