** AUSTRALIA. 11750, June 2 at 1315, hymnodic harmonies with talkovers, vs splash from 11760 Cuba. HFCC claims the entire 1200-1330 broadcast from HCA, 100 kW, 310 degrees from KNX is in Hindi! But Aoki/NDXC breakdown shows a bunch of RBA languages after 1200-1300 daily Hindi, the Sat 1315-1330 slot in Mei, about which EiBi says ``Meithei/Manipuri: India (1.3m)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 9965, June 2 at 1710, Firedragon at S3-S6, as E Asian propagation is holding up, certainly better than W European. Vs RFA in Chinese via Saipan at 1700-1900, unheard here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11700, June 1 at 2330, RHC music is suptorted = suppressed and distorted modulation. Wiggle that patchcord? 

11700, June 2 at 2237, dead air and then off instead of scheduled Portuguese hour. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Back on with Spanish at 2303 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15730, June 2 at 2218, S9+10 of dead air from RHC, but that`s OK, merely warming up for the 2230 bihour starting with French (except Esperanto Sundays). In fact this would be the OSOB if it were not for the JBA unID q.v. carrier on 15435, but certainly the SSOB --- where is everystation else?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, June 3 at 0050, no signal from TGAV. Should be detectable by now if on; another transmitter crash? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 9665, June 2 at 1711, S2 music, no doubt KCBS; 9435, June 2 at 1712, hyper-assertive Korean, no doubt VOK; and 9615, June 2 at 1712, more Korean at S5-S8, BBC via PHILIPPINES.

The clock says it`s past noon CDT, but it`s really almost a sesquihour before local mean zenith noon at 1832 UT; along with 9965 Firedrake, FE conditions are upholding. What about 7 MHz: dare I try?

7355, June 2 at 1715, very poor talk in presumed Korean, bits of music, from another BBC Korean frequency at 1530-1830, this one via SINGAPORE; the OSOB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEWFOUNDLAND [and non]. 13270-USB, June 2 at 2220, Gander VOLMET starting with poor signal; but there is also a weak AM carrier on 13270 --- I guessed it, Aoki/NDXC shows 13270 a Sound of Hope, Taiwan frequency starting at 2110, and without a *jammer.

BTW, it may be time for New York Radio, time-sharing the Gander frequencies, to return: from DXLD 18-01: 

``It looks as though New York VOLMET will be off the air at least through the end of May, according to an FAA Notice To Airmen:

One might not expect to be hearing FEBC 100 kW due west from Iba so well, or at all, but that`s what it is, this semihour in the Mon language, per EiBi, which is spoken in Burma (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UGANDA [non]. 9370, Saturday June 2 at 1437, African music, strong signal as WWRB is reconfirmed here ex-15240 with R. Munansi. At 1447 I`m checking UTwente SDR for World of Radio, so also try 9370: not a bit of Munansi, but rather something in Burmese, i.e. VOA THAILAND at 1430-1530, which is surely also what the Ugandans will be hearing during this hour. ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1932 monitoring: checking UTwente SDR, Holland for the Sat June 2 at 1431 on HLR 6190-CUSB: nothing at 1438, but trace of me at 1446. Alan Gale in England reports at 1505:

``Hi Glenn, Well the propagation certainly confounded me today, as HLR was audible here from around 1300 UT, and I even managed to catch all of WoR on 6190. The signal strength did start to drop a bit about 8 minutes from the end, but then came back up strongly again till sign off. It must have been due to all those thunderstorms watering the TX site in Germany or something I think. :-) Alan``

`Allan Weiner Worldwide` starts promptly at 0000 June 2 this week, initial interjexions about too many taxes and too few pirates. Angela and Tom are studio sidekix today. Apparently a new one, but did not yet hear a declaration of which YOOL date applied. Unfortunately, John Carver in mid-north Indiana`s computer is down so haven`t had his full AWWW summary this week. Artie Bigley, however, listened to a podcast (of this one?) and reports: 

``AW said on his AWW podcast that he will have public service programming on the new 500 kW transmitter. That would be awesome to have WOR on that 20 megawatt ERP transmitter and antenna. Will you request WOR to be aired on that transmitter a few times a week?`` Well, yes, if that`s possible; last I heard, the original plan was that it would be 100% paid for and programmed by the flat-earthers (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Tuned in at 0058 to hear some odd music which could have been this. 0100 RAE does not start, no introduxion spoken, but sounds like Oldies programming; 0107 WRMI ID for 9395, more music, ``God bless the child`` and more jazzy.. 0116 break for VOA News! Looks like another no-show, or did it run in the previous hour, 8 pm EDT, despite explicit publicity as 8 pm CT/01 UT? UNIDENTIFIED. 15435, June 2 at 2218, JBA carrier, the OSOB except for big warmup from CUBA on 15730. Nothing listed, except in HFCC, JRT, AKA, Jordan in Arabic at 22-01, 500 kW, 300 degrees to W Europe --- yeah right, what an imagination! UNIDENTIFIED. 90.1, June 1 at 1859/1900 UT, on caradio, more QRM than usual to KUCO, KHCC, fragment ``Carolina Public Radio`` heard. There are no 90.1 PR in NC, but in SC: WHMC in Conway and WEPR in Greenville. But by 1915 check, 6m map shows no VHF sporadic E openings anywhere over North America. Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and 25 Forecast- Short and to the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 77.5 74.8 74.9

There had been 11 days in a row with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of 70 or higher.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 22.

There had been 12 days in a row with a daily sunspot number (DSSN) of
greater than 0.

Sunspot group #12712 was located near N16W23 with a complex beta-gamma
magnetic signature capable of releasing a small in size C class solar flare
and an isolated medium in size M class solar flare.

#12712 released 5 very small in size B class solar flares.

In 2018 there had been 80 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
minor geomagnetic storming level to unsettled geomagnetic condition of  3 4
4 4 5 4 3 3.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 766 &
629 km/s.

Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

CANADIAN COUNTY, Oklahoma - A crop duster aircraft crashed into a radio tower north of El Reno in Canadian County.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Canadian County officials crash and subsequent fire Wednesday evening.

The Piedmont Fire Department also assisted the Okarche Fire Department at the scene in the area of Memorial and Manning roads.

Officials have confirmed that the pilot of the aircraft has died. 

OHP Trooper Mat Conway said the first 911 call came in at 5:13 p.m. Conway said the small plane hit the guide [sic] wires of the reported 1,200 [sic?? -foot?] Tyler Media radio tower. 

According to Conway, the plane then crashed into a creek bed and burst into flames. 

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be on the scene Thursday morning.

CANADIAN COUNTY, Oklahoma - A family is mourning after a man lost his life in a plane crash north of El Reno Wednesday evening.

FAA and NTSB investigators are trying to figure out how a small crop-dusting plane ended up crashing.  

Andrew Deterding, from Pond Creek has been identified as the victim.

Investigators say he was just doing his job Wednesday, crop-dusting for a client north of El Reno.

Deterding’s plane got caught in some guy wires, taking down the plane and a radio tower.

"In talking to witnesses there on the scene, it was a crop-dusting plane and had struck some of the guy wires there and caused the aircraft to go down," Capt. Paul Timmons with Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

The owner of the land where the crash occurred said he is a longtime client of Deterding’s.

The pilot’s family posted a tribute to Facebook for Deterding on his company Facebook page:

    "We lost a great man today. Andy was in a crash involving the guide [sic] wires on a radio tower and did not survive. I am at a complete loss of words, but a friend sent us this and it fits perfectly.

    All we can be in this life.. is the best version of ourselves. We all try, Day by day. Andy, lived that way, each day. He would wake up, and make the world a better place by being the best human being he could. He did it through his laugh, his jokes, his smile, his heart. He instantly made me feel at ease, as it was easy to see his gold heart shine through his body. In all he did, he walked around with light beaming out of him. Everybody he came across was a better person after experiencing his light.

    Dads memory’s [sic] and stories will live on. Through every heart he touched. From family and friends to the foster kids we care for that he treated as his own grandchildren. We love you dad, and know you are in heaven on the look out for us."

Officials call Deterding an experienced pilot.

"I know this company's been in business for a while. So he was an experienced pilot, so I think it was just an unfortunate accident that occurred yesterday," Timmons said.

The owner of the radio tower, Ty Tyler of Tyler Media, says he’s heartbroken that Deterding lost his life, and is praying for the family. 

When the investigation allows Tyler will work to get the radio station, KTUZ, back on air.

Channel 9 chopper shots showed quite a mess of the tower on the ground. WTFK? 106.7, and indeed the frequency has been emptied. WTFDA FM Database info about it:

Apparently no other FM BC or TV stations on that tower, which, NW of OKC, is quite removed from the NE OKC antenna farm. Deterding Aerial, north of Enid, is quite a landmark as one approaches Pond Creek from the south.

KTUZ call also applies to RF 29 nominally Shawnee with three Spanish TV networx. And to 1570 AM in Catoosa/Tulsa.

That`s what I wrote until I tried again. If you enter KTUZ-FM in the callsign search, you get an error message saying US stations have only 3 or 4 letters! Apparently you have to enter KTUZ, and then choose FM only. It says it is off the air:

RF 22, June 1 at 1410 UT, among several Bad DTV signals, the only DX decoding, on my opposite antenna, as predicted by Hepburn, a Level-7 intense tropo targeting central Kansas, i.e. Great Bend: 2-1 KSNC-DT; 2-2 T`mundo [sic]; 2-3 ION; 2-4 Justice; but soon losing out. This lineup updates/corrects W9WI.com as ``2.1:E:NBC, 2.2:E:ION, 2.3:E:Justice``

Propagation News – 3 June 2018


A large coronal hole on the Sun didn’t affect the HF bands earlier in the last week as its associated high-speed solar wind stream hadn’t had time to reach Earth. However, this was probably the quiet before the geomagnetic storm as the solar material was predicted to reach us at around 450-500km per second sometime around Friday, 1 June.

As the coronal hole is large, and on the Sun’s equator, it is perfectly positioned to deposit a mass of charged particles into the Earth’s magnetic field if its Bz magnetic component is south facing, so enabling coupling. The upshot is that this weekend is probably going to see very unsettled geomagnetic and possibly even auroral conditions. And in view of the hole’s elongated shape we may not see much respite until around Tuesday, 5 June, or even Wednesday, the 6th. So expect lowered maximum usable frequencies, noisy bands and poor conditions as the ionosphere is depleted—not really a good forecast for National Field Day weekend! After Wednesday, 6 June we can probably expect the bands to recover slowly.

The good news is that summer propagation conditions are just about with us, so expect the 20m HF band to remain open longer, perhaps even after sunset, although a lack of decent sunspots is not really helping. The high-speed solar wind may also adversely impact sporadic E formation, so for research purposes keep an eye on 10m over the weekend, but do hear what we have to say in the VHF section about sporadic E too.

VHF and up: 

Weather-wise it looks like more of the same with high pressure holding on over much of the country, with just the occasional spell when there are likely to be a few heavy thundery showers in the south, chiefly up to this weekend. So this week it’s time to dust off the tropo bands at VHF and UHF and try for those unusually long distance paths, say across the North Sea or south-east into Europe. Remember that paths across the sea can be very reliable from coast to coast, but once a portion of the path crosses the land, the daytime heating can destroy the needed temperature inversions, so they will only work during the night time. 


Apart from the odd bit of rain scatter from those early thunderstorms, the other mode of choice will be sporadic E. The season is coming to one of its fabled peaks in early June. Some say it’s to do with extra meteor showers, others not so convinced. Whatever provides the fuel, the weather triggers in the lower atmosphere are what probably controls the location.

The K7RA Solar Update

On May 30 at 0005 UTC the Australian Space Forecast Centre issued a warning: “On 1 June geomagnetic activity is expected to increase to Active and Minor Storm levels due to arrival of the co-rotating interaction region and high-speed solar wind streams associated with the recurrent trans-equatorial coronal hole.” 

On May 31 Spaceweather.com issued this Solar Wind Alert: “NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of minor G1-class geomagnetic storms on June 1st, increasing to 65% on June 2nd, when a stream of high-speed solar wind is expected to reach Earth. The last time this gaseous stream lashed our planet's magnetic field, almost a month ago, it sparked bright ribbons of purple light (a.k.a. "STEVE") seen from multiple US states. The Sun remained active over the past reporting week. Average daily solar flux rose from 70.1 to 74.9, and average daily sunspot number rose from 7.7 to 26.3. During the previous week in which the average daily sunspot number was 7.7, the first four days had no sunspots. 

New sunspot regions appeared on May 21, 23 and 24. 

Predicted solar flux is 77 on June 1-3, 76, 74 and 72 on June 4-6, 70 on June 7-8, 71 on June 9, 72 on June 10-14, 70 on June 15-17, 72 on June 18-23, 73 on June 24, 72 on June 25-30, 70 on July 1-6, 72 on July 7-11, 70 on July 12-14 and 72 on July 15. 

Predicted planetary A index is 25 on June 1-2, 15, 12 and 8 on June 3-5, 5 on June 6-12, 8 on June 13, 5 on June 14-18, 8 on June 19, 5 on June 20-23, 8 on June 24-25, 5 on June 26-27, then 15, 28, 15, 12, 10 and 8 on June 28 through July 3, then 5 on July 4-9, 8 on July 10, and 5 on July 11-15. 



ARRL Field Day is June 23-24. Assuming the predicted numbers above, conditions should be good for Field Day. We want to see low geomagnetic activity, and planetary A index at 5 and 8 on Saturday and Sunday are good indicators. During this period of low solar activity solar flux at 72 and 73 is also good. 



Ted Leaf, K6HI, of Kona, Hawaii reports that he is still in operation through the local volcanic activity, and asks “Are there beacons for the lower frequencies, especially now with the lower solar flux?"

“I am still smiling at the huge response I got to a post I put up on Twitter this week. A newbie to our Space Weather community dared to talk about Amateur Radio as if it were an outdated hobby-- whoops, bad idea. I gently educated him. In doing so, I roused many radio amateurs and emergency communicators, who added their own comments and talked about their own personal experiences in the field. It was very gratifying. What I hadn't expected, however, was the strong interest in the concept that amateur radio will be critical to establishing over-the-horizon radio communications on planets like Mars in the near future. 

“This idea brings me back to how we managed to communicate over long distances many decades before we had satellites, internet or cellular networks. In terms of wireless communications on Earth, we were very much in the same place back in the early 1900s that we find ourselves in now when we think about colonizing Mars. Yet few people realize that despite all our advanced technology, we can't bring a cell phone to Mars. We will need to fall back on our ‘old ways’ of doing things when it comes to communicating on other planets. Isn't it funny how ‘old’ things become ‘new’ again? 

“Speaking of, this week brings us a new chance for a decent solar storm. Strangely though, the source of this storm is an old coronal hole that gave us a moderate level solar storm about a month ago. This old hole has survived its backside passage on the Sun and has now returned, with the new promise of bringing aurora views down to mid-latitudes again. It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and 25 Forecast- Short and to the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 77.3 76.8 75.9

There had been 10 days in a row with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of 70 or higher.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 21.

There had been 11 days in a row with a daily sunspot number (DSSN) of
greater than 0.

Sunspot group #12712 was located near N14W22 with a complex beta-gamma
magnetic signature capable of releasing a small in size C class solar flare
and an isolated medium in size M class solar flare.

#12712 released 17 very small in size B class solar flares.

In 2018 there had been 80 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
active to quiet geomagnetic condition of

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

476 & 294 km/s.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &

the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.
