Last week saw a continued lack of sunspots as we journey towards solar minimum sometime in 2019–2020. The solar flux index hovered around 68-69, which is only about two to three points above what we can expect when it hits its lowest point. Unfortunately, we are likely to be repeating this sentence quite a lot over the next 12 months or so!

There were no solar flares reported and geomagnetic conditions were relatively calm, with a maximum planetary K index of two. This was due to a lack of earth-facing coronal hole activity, but that isn’t going to last. Next week, the solar flux index is likely to remain around 68, but we can expect unsettled geomagnetic conditions, with the potential for depressed maximum usable frequencies and noisy bands, from the 11th to 15th, as a large coronal hole on the solar equator become geo-effective.

Despite the low solar flux, the current settled conditions means there may be good DX to be had up to 18MHz, and possibly even 21MHz, over this weekend.

It is still a little too early for reliable Sporadic-E openings on 24 and 28MHz and we may need to wait until the end of April or early May, but do check.

Looking more generally, we are starting to see a shift towards more summer-like ionospheric conditions in the northern hemisphere. Daytime maximum usable frequencies may be lower than they were in winter, and east-west HF paths are likely to be worse. But the good news is the HF bands may stay open longer in the evening.

We are already seeing 20 metres remaining open until around 2100 UTC on 3,000km paths, and 40m and 80m continue to be worthwhile evening bands as well.

It looks like another week of uncertain fortunes, although unlike last week, there is at least the hint of high pressure to the northeast of Britain, favouring some potential Tropo conditions from the north of the country to southern Scandinavia and the Baltic. The south of Britain may just be far enough away from the high to see some heavy April shower activity and possible rain scatter on the microwave bands, especially in the southwest.

Now another mention for Sporadic E, which at times of thin HF propagation can liven up 10m, and of course the more traditional 6m bands. The weather patterns can influence this by the distribution of jet streams, and daily charts are available on www.propquest.co.uk along with occasional commentary.

The long winter meteor minimum is drawing to a close soon, with the April Lyrids coming up on the 22nd, so get prepared for better reflections. We’ve just passed minimum Moon declination for the month. Apogee, the point where the moon is furthest away from Earth, is today, so losses are at their maximum and Moon windows are short. We are a week away from declination going positive again, but conditions will slowly improve throughout the week.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA
and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary. I also check
global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio receivers
around on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.


Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2).

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

** EAST TURKISTAN. 15590, April 4 at 1325, dramatic W&W dialog in English, something religious? No, it`s just CRI, 12-15, 308 degrees from Urumqi. Heavy flutter S7-S4 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** HAWAII. 6501-USB, April 4 at 0634, S6-S8 but distorted modulation, marine weather robot with lots and lots of geo coordinates in the Pacific, i.e. NMO, USCG Honolulu; EiBi shows this broadcast at 0600-0635; frequency time-shared with USCG Kodiak, Guam and Chesapeake. (And some overlapping with XSL Fuzhou Radio, China.) Only other NMO broadcast is at 1200-1235. Mariners must hustle to copy down all the coords and then figure out what`s where. Maybe fax would be more efficient, user-friendly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALAYSIA. 9835, April 4 at 1412, RTM with Qur`an recitation in suspiciously high-pitched voice; long pauses, very poor S3-S5; 1422 announcement. As Ron Howard and Timm Breyel have reported, this is the annual pre-Ramadan competition, open even to females! A TV simulcast, and maybe also on 11665 which is too weak to tell.

Ron reported yesterday: ``9835, Sarawak FM via Kajang (on the west coast of the Malaysia peninsular), 1408-1448, April 3. In vernacular; coverage of the national competition for recitations from the Qur'an (Majlis Tilawah Dan Menghafaz Al-Quran Peringkat Kebangsaan), being held this year at the Putrajaya Islamic Complex; sponsored by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia; series of about 10 minutes of reciting, with both men and women in the competition; very rare to hear women, but they have a women's division in the competition; Being held from April 1 to 6, so there should be more days with this coverage here.``

Timm replied: ``Yes, Ron, this is an RTM TV1 audio feed. Contestants are from around the world. Quariah (women reciters) are among the contestants. This event is heard annually just before the Fasting Month (Ramadan).``

As for the recitations, presumably all must be done by rote memory, but what about the musical notes? Are these also set in stone for each syllable, or is some extemporizing permitted or even possible? Are the contestants judged on their accuracy, or their performance, which implies some individuality? Just how far could they depart from the standard without getting in trouble? The poor heathen tho Abrahamist Christians can have no such equivalent contests, with multiple versions of their Bible and in multiple languages.. Can you imagine the cacophony? ** TURKEY. 9540.059, April 4 at 1412, very poor S1-S3 talk, bet it`s VOT in typical plussy offfrequenciness --- yes, this hour scheduled Arabic, 500 kW at 120 degrees opposite from here. WORLD OF RADIO 1924 monitoring: tho 9455 still shows on the WRMI skedgrid as System F at 1000-1100 with a variety of programming, Wolfgang Büschel was not able to hear it via remote receivers other days, and today, Chris Krug in Tulsa, who normally listens to the Wed 1030 broadcast of WOR, says ``WRMI 9455 1030 UT WOR absent --- Greetings Glenn, I tuned in to hear WOR on 9455 this morning (1030 UT) and heard nothing, not even a carrier. I rechecked at 1130 in case sked was changed for DST, WRMI is on but not a good copy, I hear a YL announcer so I don`t think it`s WOR.`` Next:

** U S A. 7505v, April 4 at 0630, WRNO still on with music at S9-S7 but undermodulated and rough carrier. Ivo Ivanov, Ron Howard and Dave Kenny have been reporting it on beyond the former 01-04 UT schedule, and Mauno Ritola noted the WRNO website now says:

``SHORTWAVE FREQUENCY 7505 kHz 8PM - 8AM CENTRAL`` Also linked to WRNO FB: which exclaims, ``March 28 at 7:00pm · Excited to reach China with the Good News!``

Well, certainly more possible than before 0400! But 50 kW at 20 degrees? Ron Howard confirms extension to 12 hours a day: ``April 4 - Tuned in at 1245, to hear Chinese & English religious song, then with preaching in Chinese; yes, noted 1300*``

HFCC A-18 also has WRNO registered on 15590 at 16-22, an imaginary frequency not used for many, many years, the Joe Costello era, but always in the listings. 7505 could be expanded further between 22 and 16, altho the first hour would now confront IBB Tibetan via Tajikistan and jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA
and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary. I also check
global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio receivers
around on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.


Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2).

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

The podcasts I am subscribed to (R. Tirana and R. Havana) have been in the incorrect language since the shift to summer time a couple of weeks ago, so I would suspect that timed recordings at Radio360 have not been adjusted appropriately. R. On March 30, Ron Howard said he ``just missed sign-on at 0555`` as CCI from R. Nikkei 2, Japan was growing. As we get further into spring and summer, RN2 should be propagating less and less, by Congo about the same insofar as relation to sunrise/sunsets (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15439 & 15301, April 2 at 1343, these RHC spurs are equally audible in FM and AM tuning, unusual. Fundamental 15370 must be heard in AM only. The second pair out also have some AM, but more FM, 15508 & 15233 [vs 15230]. More at ~69 kHz multiples are blobby: 15577, 15646, 15715? 15163, 15095? Something`s always wrong at RHC.

There had been some contradictory info about whether WS was on this transmission, which is not in English every day, such as UT Saturday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRELAND [non]. 5820, April 3 at 1931 via UTwente SDR, a JBA carrier. Checking for RTÉ via Madagascar, as reported from Italy as if it had been reactivated after a couple years. I suspect it`s more likely a Europirate; Wolfgang Büschel replies:

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

We saw no sunspots during this reporting week, March 22-28. The
previous week had sunspots on only three days, with an average of
5.6.

Average daily solar flux receded from 69.3 to 68.2. Average daily
planetary A index dropped from 14.4 to 10.6, and average
mid-latitude A index declined from 11.3 to 8.9.

Predicted solar flux is 70 on March 30 to April 15, 69 on April 16,
68 on April 17-29, 69 on April 30, then 70 on May 1-12 and 69 on May
13.

Predicted planetary A index is 10 on March 30, 5 on March 31 to
April 4, then 8 and 12 on April 5-6, 5 on April 7-9, then 8, 15 and
20 on April 10-12, 15 on April 13-15, then 8, 5 and 5 on April
16-18, then 15, 1 and 15 on April 19-21, then 18, 10 and 5 on April
22-24, then 15, 12 and 8 on April 25-27, 5 on April 28 through May
6, then 8, 15 and 20 on May 7-9, 15 on May 10-12 and 8 on May 13.

F.K. Janda, OK1HH sent this geomagnetic activity forecast for the
period March 30 to April 24, 2018.

"I saw a spot by K0TPP for CE2SV on 50.313 MHz. I copied one decode
from CE2SV about 2240z. Probably afternoon TEP for AC4TO, possibly an Es
link from the Midwest to TEP.

"The geomagnetic field was active with the Kp to 4.

"Conditions were good in the CQ WPX SSB on 10 meters March 24.
Central and South American stations were loud to eastern Kansas
around 1930z and put 15 stations in the log with 5 watts and mobile
1/4 wave whip. Conditions not as good Sunday, though YV1KK was 20 dB
over S9 at 2000z. At 2114z CE7VPQ was very loud on 10 and I was his
contact #480.
