W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast #2018-33

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on the planet.

I'm a retired space and terrestrial meteorologist and one of the few on the planet with advanced education & 44 years of forecasting experience in both disciplines.

Created and disseminated by Thomas F. Giella, W4HM in Lakeland, FL, USA © 1988-2018.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 69.3 69.0 69.3.

There had been 8 days in a row with a daily solar flux number (DSFN) below 70, values that occur at the bottom of a sunspot cycle (#24).

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

In 2018 there had been 17 days with a daily sunspot number (DSSN) of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a quiet geomagnetic condition of
2 0 0 0 0 0 1 2.

During the northern hemisphere winter season the higher HF bands of 10-20 meters (11-19 meters) close sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher than in the southern hemisphere as the F layer of the ionosphere is lower in height and more concentrated.

Keep in mind that almost daily during the southern hemisphere summer season you will find that the 10 (11) meter bands will open via short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial propagation (TEP).

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general public.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary. I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio receivers around on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if and when necessary.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array antenna.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2).

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Predicted solar flux is 70 on February 2, 71 on February 3-8, 70 on February 9-22, 69 on February 23 to March 4, 70 on March 5-18.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on February 2-3, 10 and 8 on February 4-5, 5 on February 6-8, then 8, 12 and 8 on February 9-11, 5 on February 12-14, then 8, 12, 8, 10, 5, 8, 10 and 8 on February 15-22, 5 on February 23 to March 2, 8 on March 3-4, 5 on March 5-7, then 8, 12 and 8 on March 8-10, 5 on March 11-13, then 8, 12, 8, 10 and 5 on March 14-18.

Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period February 2-28, 2018 from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.

“Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on February 2, 5-8, 12-14, 20
Mostly quiet on February 3, 9, 17, 23, 25-27
Quiet to unsettled on February 11, 16, 18-19, 21-22
Quiet to active on February 4, 10, 15, 24, 28
Active to disturbed-not anticipated

Amplifications of the solar wind from coronal holes are expected on February 5-6, 9-12, 18-19, 27-28

Remark:
- Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.
- Regarding ongoing changes, current forecasts are even less reliable.”

Joe Flamini, W4BXJ, of White Hall, Virginia wrote on January 29, “So, I usually leave the 10-meter rig scanning in the shack, and it's usually quiet. So much so, in fact, that I forget it's there. Imagine my surprise to hear a couple of amateurs in New Zealand talking mobile-to-mobile at about 1500 GMT on January 27. I reached out and had a 45-second QSO with them both before the link faded. That'll never happen again!"

I checked back with Joe, and he told me it all happened so fast he didn’t log their call signs, but they were both mobile in the Christchurch area, and I estimate the short path distance at about 8,800 miles.

The latest from Tamitha Skov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9cMZnTp1Y

Jeff Hartley, N8II, of Shepherdstown, West Virginia wrote on February 1: “The solar indices have been remarkably very similar day to day in January with K index seldom above 2, often 0 and SFI running 69-71. There are other factors that influence signal strength on 80 meters and even more so on 160 meters night to night.

“During the CQWW 160-meter contest last weekend, I missed the best hours to Europe around the European sunrise the first night, but signals did seem down considerably from 2300Z-0240Z when I operated and the second night was even worse, about as poor as winter conditions ever get on the path to Europe.

“There were loud west-coast signals around sunrise Saturday morning with two strong callers from British Columbia and a good signal from KH7M in Hawaii.

“The second night ZC4A (British bases on Cypress), was calling CQ on my run frequency and they apparently could not hear me at all. Sunday night after the contest ended ZC4A was 579!

“It was not until several nights later that I was able to complete a QSO on their last night of operation. I also worked them on 80 meters, both modes, 40 meters, both modes, on January 26 (not very loud when worked there) and on 30-meter CW where they were barely readable at 0541Z.

“Signals on 80 were quite a bit louder than the other bands. Forty meters seems to be improving to Europe with some southern European stations still having decent signals well into our evening.

“I have added quite a few band countries on the low bands lately (log started Jan 2017). On the 26th, on 80-meter CW, I worked TG9ADM Guatemala, CP4BT in Bolivia (quite rare on that band), and less rare, but more distant, RI50ANO on the South Shetland Islands near Antarctica.

“I also have logged Alex, RI50ANO, on 40-meter phone and CW. By far the hardest-to-work DX recently was last night, February 1st, when worked UN9L in Kazakhstan on 80-meter CW. He was weak, but readable, and heard me right away, but it took several tries to get my call through.

“Over the last two months, I have checked the DX cluster for reports of him on 80 meters, only to hear nothing. The slightly increased daylight near the North Pole seems to be improving conditions as of about January 20. Fifteen meters has been essentially dead, even to Africa, on many days, but today I snagged C81G off the coast of Mozambique on CW and EA6VQ in the Balearic Islands was S9+ from 1615-1650Z. Even 17 meters is closed or very marginal to Europe on most days due to the low solar flux.

“The big DXCC news is the addition of Kosovo (Z6) to the DXCC list effective January 21st. The Z60A club station has a good signal on 20 meters every day. I logged them easily on the 21st on 20 CW, and later 20-meter SSB and 80-meter CW. They seem to have a high noise level at their location on the low bands.”

14th Global Shortwave Co-ordination Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The High Frequency Coordination Conference (HFCC), the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) jointly held the 14th Global Shortwave Co-ordination Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 22-26 January 2018.

The conference was hosted by the ABU. Eighty five participants from the three coordination groups, representing global shortwave broadcasters and related stakeholders from all over the world from 84 countries coordinated schedules for the coming transmission season. The objective of the conference was to coordinate shortwave frequency schedules for the A-18.

Shortwave broadcasting has a unique position in that the radio channels used by international stations are not assigned, but regularly coordinated for two seasons each year. The frequency channel situation for shortwave radio is always changing because of the 11 year solar cycle and seasonal effects, as well as because of new or changed frequencies of shortwave broadcasters around the globe. Co-ordination methods were started by broadcasters with support from the broadcasting unions. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) set up a special task group that studied the emerging co-ordination procedures in the 1990s and concluded that the system should become an integral part of shortwave spectrum management. The principles were incorporated in Article 12 of the International Radio Regulations in 1997.

The Coordination Conference provides delegates and their organisations with a valuable opportunity to coordinate their frequencies directly with the frequency managers of other broadcasters and prevent interference occurring in their radio services.

The ABU is delighted to place on record the positive feedback and response of the delegates who participated in this A-18 conference.

Propagation News – 4 February 2018

Solar activity remained at very low levels last week, with one barely-visible sunspot group pushing the sunspot number to a maximum of 13 and the solar flux index to 69. Geomagnetic conditions were largely settled, with some coronal hole activity pushing the K-index to three at times.

Despite the low SFI, there was band activity up to at least 21MHz. Z60A in Kosovo came up to a 59 on 15 metres CW on Wednesday and the FT8 frequency, 21.074MHz, revealed varying amounts of activity. So the message is that despite a low solar flux index it does pay to check the upper bands regularly. The FT8 frequencies are a good starting point, as are the International Beacon Project frequencies.

Next week NOAA predicts the solar flux index will remain around the 70 mark. Geomagnetic conditions should be slightly unsettled, with a maximum K-index of three throughout the week, rising to four on Saturday, the 10th, due to ongoing coronal hole activity.

All eyes and ears will be on Bouvet Island this week as the 3Y0Z DXpedition gets underway. Described as the most remote island on Earth, Bouvet is 1,000 miles north of Antarctica and a near north-south 7,400km path from the UK.. But it won’t be an easy one as signals are likely to be fairly weak unless you have a beam. Checking with the VOACAP online software shows 17m or 15m might offer the best chance of a daytime contact, with 17m peaking around 1600 to 1800UTC. 40m and 30m offer the best chance of an evening or night time path. By next week we should have a better idea of how strong they are.

VHF and up:

This week we are in a cold northerly with heavy wintry showers around the coasts, sometimes driven a fair way inland at times. We therefore have the prospects of rain scatter on the microwave bands, and you can track the showers on one of the many weather radars out there on the web.

The pressure has remained low through this weekend, but high pressure returns early next week. It’s unlikely that this will produce good enough inversions to produce much tropo. In any event, this is soon replaced by more unsettled weather after mid-week.. This will mean wet and windy weather at times and unlikely to do much for VHF/UHF conditions.

Random meteor rates are still low and there are no showers due until the Lyrids shower at the end of April. EME conditions will decline this week as Moon declination goes negative today, meaning shorter Moon windows in the Northern hemisphere. Path losses will increase all week as we approach apogee a week today. So, it’s looking like a good week to do some VHF DXing on the various artificial satellites. Look on the AMSAT-UK website for details.

** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, Jan 31 at 1945, WRMI with World Music yet again, instead of RAE relay in German; 7780 // 9455 with other music, presumably Oldies.

9395, Feb 1 at 0206 check, RAE Argentina-to-the-World confirmed in English news about Argentina, with music bed, S9 via WRMI. Glad this is propagating for a change.

9395, Feb 1 at 1917, no RAE but gospel music, JBA // 7780, and not // 9455. 9395 at 1959 past hourtop 2001 with song in Portuguese, while 9455 has started VORW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOUVET ISLAND [non]. All USB, 14187, 14188, 14189, 14186, 14185, Feb 1 from 1940, pileups on each, of hams uttering nothing but their own callsigns, obviously try to work some hot DX, still Kosovo? No one *ever* mentions 3Y0Z or any call of the station sought. Some of the calls I copy in the next few minutes:
14185, XE1IM, K6KZM, N1RIU QSY to here, success
14186, W7WLL, XE1IM QSY to here, successful contact exchanging RS
14187, N2JF, N1RIU
14188, K3OXL
14189, KE7JNT

Where is the DX station? presumably a few kHz lower but I don`t hear it, 14180-14184. On 14175 and 14181 are some non-DX QSOs. Intermittent AM carrier spoilers near 14187.

On 14197 at 1955, an unID ham tells news about the 3Y0: they are still on the boat, anchored on the east side of Bouvet; due to heavy seas, it`s not safe to launch choppers; boat is rocking and some are sea-sick; 15-20 foot swells 2-3 days ago. Bands will really be mess in a day or two. Refers to the 3Y0Z website for this info, i.e.:

``February 1, 2018, 1300 UTC: Our ship is still at anchor off the east side of Bouvet. Winds are 35 to 40 knots, and the ship is pitching and rolling up to 30 degrees. This makes flying and a landing attempt impossible today. The temperature is hovering at around 0 degrees C. Visibility has improved..

We are poised and ready when a weather window opens. We had our maritime mobile station up for a few hours, but had to take it down again to avoid damage caused by the extreme motion of the ship.

1445 UTC: Winds have increased to 45 knots. Unsecured items are again sliding across floors and tables. Some team members are again feeling seasick.

The barometer has risen, slightly. We are anxiously awaiting calmer conditions. Hang in there with us! Ralph, KØIR`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA [non]. 11875, Feb 1 at 1631, instrumental gospel tune, S3-S5; 1632 announcement over music, 1633 HoA string music joined by singing. HFCC shows 1630-1700 daily, MBR, Nauen, multilingual, 100 kW, 145 degrees, but what is it, really?

EiBi shows Bible Voice at 1630-1700, language unknown via Nauen, GERMANY to E Africa. But Aoki says Bible Voice in Nuer, 250 kW, 140 degrees via Issoudun, FRANCE. Back to EiBi for info about Nuer: spoken by 800K in Sudan, 200K in Ethiopia (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15781, 15712, 15644, 15575, 15507, 15438, 15303, 15235, 15167, 15099, 15032, 14964, 14880, Feb 1 at 1536, very approx. centers of RHC-FM extremely distorted spurblobs out of 15370-AM transmitter. Average intervals today circa 67.5 kHz. Closer ones quite readable in FM mode, further ones detectable at least by the F# tone accompanying. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ETHIOPIA [non]. 11600, Feb 1 at 1626, presumed Oromo, S4-S6 with considerable QRDRM jamming, as it`s the new Radio OMN, Oromia Media Network, 1628 into HoA music. Aoki shows this is an IRRS client, 15-16 M-F, 100 kW, 195 degrees via Sofia, BULGARIA. Ivo said this is also on // 11575 with 50 kW, but 11575 is only a JBA carrier here, far weaker than it should be, everything else being equal, with half the power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SWAZILAND. 15105, Feb 1 at 1621, S3-S5 in unknown language, with heavy flutter. Listed as TWR Manzini in Kirundi, 1557-1627 M-F, 100 kW, 13 degrees.. Would not expect such flutter on a trans-equatorial path (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. The next WORLD OF RADIO 1915 broadcast, Thursday February 1 at 2230.5 on WRMI 5850, should provide good reception across North America (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 2104 UT February 1

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 69.8 69.2 68.9.

There had been 8 days in a row with a daily solar flux number (DSFN) below 70, values that occur at the bottom of a sunspot cycle (#24).

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 13.

In 2018 there had been 16 days with a daily sunspot number (DSSN) of 0.

And prior to the emergence of a sunspot group (#12697) on Tuesday January 30, 2018 there had been 10 days in a row with no earth facing sunspot groups.

Newly emerged and numbered sunspot group #12697 was located near S09E33 with a simple alpha class magnetic signature capable of releasing isolated very small A class solar flares.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition of
0 0 2 2 2 2 1 3.

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300- fair at night and poor at day,

Very Good- S9 +1-9
Good- S8-9
Fair- S4-7
Poor- S1-3
Very Poor- S0

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

TWR Bonaire - New 800 AM Transmitter Launch

On Tuesday, January 30, the island of Bonaire will be filled with Trans World Radio’s staff celebrating as the ministry flips the switch to a stronger service at 4:30 pm EST. With the new transmitter, TWR is ushering in a historic era of Christian broadcasting in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“We’re increasing our power from 1000-watts to 4500-watts. And it’s an AM station. It will cover all the way from Central Brazil all the way to the Southern part of the United States at night,” TWR’s President Lauren Libby shares.

Tom Taylor passed away, special broadcast next weekend

Hello There from IRRS/NEXUS-IBA in Milan,

We are back after a while, with some very sad news. Tom Taylor, also known as Barry Stephens, former founder of European Music Radio, and passionate Shortwave radio enthusiast heard many times over our station, has died.

We exchanged emails last November with Tom, and he wrote me about his illness. Tom was extremely eager to return to the air in 2018. I thought that these days he would be able to recover quickly. However, I was wrong.

I am loosing a very good friend and a passionate radio lover alike. We are all going to miss him greatly at NEXUS.

We scheduled the last EMR program that Tom sent to us for a special broadcast over the next weekend on:

i.) Friday, Feb 2, 2018, 1900-2000 UTC on 7290 kHz (150 kW to EU) and 846 kHz MW
ii.) Saturday, Feb 3, 2018, 0900-1000 UTC on 9510 kHz (150 kW to EU)

Also repeated at various other times on 846 kHz during all next week from 7PM-01
AM CET on 846 kHz to Southern Europe, and available via streaming at
http://mp3.nexus.org:8000/irn.mp3.m3u

Hope Tom will be enjoying good reception from the heavens.

Keep listening to Shortwave.

Glenn Hauser logs January 31-February 1, 2018

** ARGENTINA [non]. 9455 // 9955, Jan 31 at 1252, it seems that another RAE relay via WRMI is MIA: Portuguese at 12-13 M-F. Instead I am hearing praise music by YL in English, ``We will join the angels when they sing``; 1254 cut incomplete to another song by same. I think the RAE hours do run a bit short, like 55 minutes, so there could be some fill afterwards, but unlikely this early. Need to check what happen at 1200, a time I am rarely awake. Only tnx to the lunar eclipse am I up by now today.

BTW, the just published WRTH Updater includes incorrect info for RAE/WRMI, including overlooking 9455 for this, if and when it exist: currently whatever is on 9955 between 12 and 15 is duplicated on 9455 (and also same pair at some other times as I have pointed out weeks ago). (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BAHRAIN [non]. 9745, Jan 31 at 1411, S Asian music, from TWR India via ARMENIA; not a hint of R. Bahrain, nor anywhen for me, supposedly on here 24h in CUSB. If you have only one SW frequency and one transmitter, better make it a good clear one. Too many stations have no clue about frequency management for their own benefit (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BONAIRE [and non]. 800, Feb 1 at 0001 UT, I am looking for PJB via its new 450 kW transmitter at the hour it is supposed to switch beams toward Cuba. As always KQCV OKC dominates on groundwave, but when I null it, I again hear CKLW ``AM 800`` with C&F temps, EST timecheck in news. Slow SAH. But when I am avoiding CKLW, not nulling KQCV I am also getting a third station with choral hymn, but seems English, and definitely English follows.

PJB was previously running English until 0030, but the WRTH Update shows until 0000. ID is now supposed to be ``Que Brille 800 AM Bonaire``, but I`ve seen no reports yet of anyone axually hearing that; why not keep the well-established name Radio Transmundial? They may well have been testing the 450 kW during the biweek before official inauguration evening of Jan 30. Nigel Pimblett in Dunmore, Alberta reported to IRCA earlier that UT day Jan 30: ``Good signal with "Radio Trans Mundial" ID at 0200 UT, so am guessing they're on with 450 kW power now.``

Jon Pearkins, IRCA DX Monitor via ARC said, ``The latest report on TWR’s web site, dated January 17th, indicates that the 9 person launch team was doing final testing last week. TWR web site graphics show a four tower array and a Figure 8 directional pattern with lobes NNW and SSE. The one to the North is directly at Florida and Cuba``

I assume NNW and North are rough approximations. On my globe I check out the real bearings more accurately: if it`s really NNW, 337.5 degrees, that would miss Cuba, to the east and hit North America at South Carolina, across to Wisconsin, Saskatchewan, northern Alberta, Yukon, northern Alaska. If they really are aiming at Cuba, a better azimuth would be about 320 degrees, right between Santiago and La Habana up the the length of the Antille, and this would also carry on thru LA, TX, just missing OK`s SW corner, but close enough to us. 315 would be exactly NW. Habana is about 1300 miles from Bonaire, which is a bit much for regular single-hop coverage, thus the brute force to compensate. Stgo. is only 800.

Schedule here
http://www.twrbonaire.com/broadcast_schedule/
shows English to Caribbean until 0030, then Spanish to the ``North``. I don`t find anything on that website about antenna details.

FCC AM Query contains data as far away as Bonaire, where it`s listed at PJB3, but very old info when they were still 500 kW ND. Now the question is, whether part of the time for the Caribbean they still operate ND, just reversing the direxional during the hours in Portuguese for Brasil.

I`m not really hot to hear PJB, as it wasn`t that hard with 100 kW, more interested in how much more damage it may cause now to North American stations.

Replying to my previous report, I also got this Jan 30 from my successor as WTFDA Statistics editor: ``Hi Glenn, Would you believe a couple (Dave & Shirley Smith - long time friends from Syracuse NY years) are staying overnight at our house here in Moncks Corner SC. They just came back from Bonaire where Dave and others helped with the final electrical touches of TWR Bonaire upgrades - I'll give him a copy of your email report - Fred Nordquist`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CANADA

** CANADA. 800, Jan 31 at 0638 UT, string of promos with non-IDs only as ``AM 800``, duh, we already know the frequency! One has a 519-area code, which chex for Windsor, i.e. CKLW, and back to C2CAM. Not hard to get this past KQCV OKC at right angle, really looking for the new 450 kW from PJB Bonaire. Supposed to be on the NNW beam toward Cuba and Florida at 0000-0300 only (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15579, 15510, 15440, 15301, 15232, 15165, 15096, 15029, 14961, Jan 31 at 1402, approx. centers of RHC-FM spurblobs out of 15370-AM, which has just signed on. Before then 19mb was clean but not much propagating yet. 14-16 is the schedule for this mess, today about 68-69 kHz intervals, the closer ones demodulating OK in FM always with the F# tone (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENNG DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1915 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday January 31 at 1056 toward the end of the 1030 on WRMI 9455, and it`s VG, S9+10.. This is before sunrise; yet 9455 is often JBA just after sunset. Also confirmed Wed Jan 31 at 2200 on WBCQ 7489.963v, fair. Yet when checked circa 2115 it was on the plus side, about 7490.06. Frequency wavers slightly as I try to measure it to the Hz. Also confirmed but poorly, UT Thu Feb 1 at 0030 on WBCQ 9329.95v-CUSB. Next:

** U S A. 9395 // 7780, Wed Jan 31 at 1357, WRMI ID by Biermann, and starting VOA News relay. I have a sense of foreboding, and sure enough, it`s cut off for a repeat of the BB ID at 1359.5, 1400 rejoining `The Power Hour` replay from yesterday afternoon. To point out the obvious? You should not start a VOA newscast unless you can stay with it for the full 5 minutes; and I hope VOA would be uncomfortable associating with the wackos at TPH, if they knew about it. TPH had been running earlier in the 13+ hour in a tuneby; scheduled 13-15 M-F.

The original live broadcast of TPH is still not getting on the WRMI air completely. Jan 31 at 2115, 7780 // 9395 are in Oldies instead of TPH, which may have started briefly at 2100. I find the program so off-putting that I just can`t listen continually to hear when it dump off, if at the same time each day per automation? Would-be live callers are out of luck. Has anyone complained to the program?

9455, meanwhile, Wed Jan 31 at 2115 starts `Viva Miami`, Jeff y Thaïs in Spanish recorded at a resort outside Kuala Lumpur in Malasia following last week`s HFCC. Not sure if this is the same ep I heard earlier referring to a Hawaii visit on the way back; and reception now is poor, so hope to catch one of the dozens of further repeats (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also ARGENTINA [non]
