Glenn Hauser logs February 10-11, 2017

** BRAZIL. 11855.01, Feb 11 at 0005, Rádio Aparecida RCC talk in Brazuguese, appearing back almost on-frequency! Had been circa 11854.9 for months. We`ll see how long this last. Probably // relay by RRB2 on 11934.82 but too weak there to be sure (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 1610, Feb 11 at 0555 UT, South Asian music, so is it CHHA Toronto, Voces Latinas? Not all their programming is Latin, notably 03-04 UT Punjabi Tue-Sat, and 04-05 UT Mon. But until 0600 UT (1 am local) sked here
`El Nocturno de Radio Voces Latinas` which implies Spanish.

There is another ethnic Canadian on 1610, CHRN, Montreal, supposed to be all-Asian, with only 1 kW vs 6.25 from CHHA, and closer CHHA normally blox it here; but this website is also blocked as insecure:
but I get thru to this one:
where its disorganized and incomplete program schedule
gets no closer than this:
10:00 pm to 04:00 am Punjabi News Monday to Friday

Their about-us page does not explain what Humsafar means, just:

``Radio Humsafar is a twenty four hour a day, seven days a week source for South Asian programming. On air in several places in Canada as well as all over the world via Internet. Radio Humsafar broadcasts in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and English. Radio Humsafar reaches over 1.5 million listeners throughout the world.

Radio Humsafar enjoys a top notch team of broadcast professionals with wide international experience. From Punjabi and Hindi musicals to Classical and Ghazal programs, from talk shows on current and controversial issues to live news direct from India and Pakistan. Radio Humsafar connects Canadians and Americans of South Asian descent to their roots, tradition and culture.

Radio Humsafar – dynamic, energetic, stimulating, informational, and entertaining.``

So are those its literal meanings? Google translate cannot deal with Humsafar, at least when spelt Romanly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11830 & 11850, Feb 11 at 0004, RHC spurs with Spanish audio // fundamental 11840 which is suptorted. I`ve yet to find such minus/plus 10 kHz sputnix attached to any other RHC frequency, and wonder where same transmitter may be in use elsewhen? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 5935, Feb 11 at 1358, Shiokaze with piano music, marred by rapidly pulsing tone jammer, approx. 1050 Hz above and below. 1400 JSR off leaving much weaker jammer carrier on 5935.0 plus the tones. Shiokaze back on at *1404:25 as jamming continues (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA [non]. 9689.97, Feb 11 at 0601, no sign of VON, 23 hours after heard reactivated. 7254.9 was not on before 0600 with any IS/leadup, but underway at 0601 in Hausa. Maybe 31m propagation unfavorable, as no 9650 Guinea, and 9575 Morocco is a JBA carrier. Nor any 9690 at 0651 check, when 9915 BBC is good from Ascension (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 9610, Feb 11 at 0016, RRI in Spanish with somewhat weaker CCI. HFCC shows TWO China services simultaneously, CNR Mongolian from Beijing site, and CRI Hakka from Kunming. Sounds unChinese, so I`ll go with Beijing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UKRAINE [non]. 11580, Feb 10 at 2357, WRMI in English narration of a story set in Russia, with classical music bridges, fair S8-S5; 2359 outro as `The Reading Lounge`, just in time for cut to BZ WRMI ID. No ID for the station relayed, but we know it`s RUI, as same program title I logged on Sept 25, 2014, when WRMI was just starting to revive and relay RUI. Now the 2330 broadcast is M-F only, and only on 11580 (while 5850 & 6855 are competing with Radio Prague), but RUI is 7-daily at 0200 on same plus 6855 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1864 monitoring: confirmed Friday February 10 at 2230 on WRMI 5950 & 6855, both JBA, and // 11580, S9+20. Also confirmed UT Sat Feb 11 starting at 0030:03.5 on WBCQ, 9329.87v-CUSB (Brother Scare was cut off at 0029:15 for WBCQ ID and promotion).

NOT confirmed Sat Feb 11 from 1525 on Hamburger Lokalradio, 7265-CUSB via UTwente SDR: only noise and S Asian songs from CRI Hindi service, no Media Network Plus, nor World of Radio during chex every few minutes; at 1555 *maybe* a trace of gh underneath. Hindi service finishes circa 1559 but still two very weak stations, also Azad Kashmir?

*1601 CRI theme cuts on 7265 very strong, opening MRK in Russian. So is UTwente webcast running a full minute behind? I then try to hear a timesignal thru it, but 10000 & 15000 have music alternating with pips, no doubt that Italian blocker whose pips I would not rely on to be precise; can`t get anything from RWM, CHU, or WWV either.

** U S A. 7490+v // 5130-v, UT Sat Feb 11 at 0125, WBCQ as `Allan Weiner Worldwide` is lengthily lecturing a caller on cosmology. Unusually, these two are synchronized instead of a considerable delay on 5130 routed thru Area 51 server (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, Feb 11 at 0349, VP carrier, perhaps WTWW-1 very out of order, and nothing on sometimes extended day frequency 9475; yet neighbors WWCR are inbooming: 5890 S9+30, 5935 S9+40 --- and 5085 WTWW-2 with music is also S9+30/40. 0551 recheck, now 5830 is S9+45 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4070.372, Feb 11 at 0353, beacon GT is JBA. Still waiting for any info about QTH; if these are in the milliwatts, do not need to be licensed or secretive (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs February 10, 2017

** CUBA. 5025 & 5040, Feb 10 at 0659, both Rebelde and RHC are off, and so are 5010 & 5055 mixes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUINEA [non]. 9650, Feb 10 at 0716, very poor S2-S4 signal; hard to believe Conakry is on now, since Nigeria is VG on 9689.970. Maybe V of Korea already (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11600, Feb 10 at 1457, Denge Kurdistane, good signal mixing music and talk until 1500:05* cut modulation and carrier, leaving a much weaker carrier, and no modulation on it until about a sesquiminute later. Typical behaviour for site swap, but which one is stronger, if either, varies greatly from day to day. Supposedly going from PRIDNESTROVYE to FRANCE, per Ivo Ivanov (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 9689.970, Feb 10 at 0706, surprised to hear VON in French, frequency reactivated; it`s S9, the SSOB between 9395 & 9955 WRMIs. last I logged it was Oct 2, 2015 as in DXLD-15-40. And // 7254.923, S9+10, good modulation on both and synchronized so from same site, which? See also GUINEA.

11770.930, Feb 10 at 1820, VP S3 signal with trace of modulation. Checking here in case another mostly-inactive VON frequency could resume; maybe, but can`t be positive this is not a receiver birdie (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7730 // 6855 // 5850, Fri Feb 10 at 0704, WRMI with `Viva Miami` episode in Spanish again about the Whites` visit to Chequia; NOT `Media Network Plus` which continues to show on the sked grid, that really airing 24 hours earlier on Thursdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17775, Feb 10 at 1815, JBA carrier; can this be KVOH? Maybe exciter. Recheck at 1919, now S9+20 of distorted music, shortly cutting off at 1920*. Stayed with it and never came back by 1955. More anomalous behaviour from Simi, nominal sign-off 1900 on weekdays. When will they ever get their replacement transmitter going? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1840-AM, Feb 10 at 0721 UT, JBA carrier. Checking for WMMN Fairmont WV, 2 x 920, as Larry Fravel had reported it to IRCA, intermittently from 7 miles away. It`s 5000/200 watts U1, with sports format, so should be more likely when on day power, SR/SS. Larry doesn`t say whether he was hearing it day and/or night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Propagation News – 12 February 2017

Last week, the hoped-for settled geomagnetic conditions materialised, but could have been better. After Monday, the K-index settled down to one or two for the rest of the week.

HF conditions have been variable, rather than outstanding. There have been some 15 metre openings at times, but 20 and 17 metres have been more consistent. The lower bands, such as 80 and 40 metres, have also been proving how good they can be in the winter, offering DX at times.

The daytime critical frequency has been reaching around 6MHz, meaning 40m is open to slightly longer skip of 500 to 1,000 kilometres. Sixty metres has been better for daytime inter-G contacts. The estimated nighttime MUF over a 3,000km path has been staying above 7MHz through the night.

Next week, the solar flux index is predicted to remain in the 70s, moving higher towards 80 around the eighteenth.

Geomagnetically-settled conditions should continue until around the fourteenth, when the K-index is predicted to rise to four, due to recurrent coronal hole activity. But this should be relatively short lived.

We will be moving towards springtime HF conditions in a few weeks, so make the most of the better low-band conditions while you can.

VHF and up:

With high pressure over the North Sea and the nearby continent, we might expect some enhanced tropo conditions on paths across to Denmark and northern Germany later this weekend, but nothing major.

Some weather models bring the high a bit closer at the end of next week. This may limit the tropo by lowering the temperature inversion and bringing very dry air from the continent, degrading the inversions’ ability to generate tropo. So, a slightly better week than last, but much of the time there will be no major tropo event.

Even with poor tropo conditions, it’s worth investigating the VHF, UHF and GHz bands. There are always DX opportunities at VHF and above using aircraft scatter—up to 800km if you have the right equipment to take advantage of short duration paths. Digimodes or fast CW are required.

We are in the winter minimum of meteor activity, but there are still opportunities for random meteor scatter contacts around dawn, when the Earth is rotating into the flux of meteoric particles.

Moon declination is falling, going negative on Tuesday, and losses are increasing. With apogee only a week away, the best conditions for EME contacts will be early this week.

W4HM Daily Solar Space Weather Geomagnetic Weather Discussion & HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast

For my hamateur radio and SWL friends around the globe:

I have decided to begin posting some of my daily solar, space and
geomagnetic weather discussions and HF radio wave propagation forecasts in
my Twitter account at @GiellaW4hm . Of course it will consist of little
snippets of what's going on as Twitter severely limits tweets as far as
content length.

Feel free to redistribute this "not for profit" solar, space and geomagnetic
weather discussion and HF radio wave propagation forecast, as long as you
redistribute it in it's entirety and give me credit for it.

Also feel free to leave a "LIKE" every time you access this discussion and
forecast as it's the only method I have to gauge the usefulness of it.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable by the average
radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions also change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2).

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Solar Space & Geomagnetic Weather Conditions On

Thursday February 9, 2017-

Solar activity was low.

Earth's magnetic field was quiet.

The solar flux index (SFI) was 74.2 73.4 74.6.

The official daily sunspot number (SSN) was 15.

In 2017 there were 11 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of 0.
Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately three more
years, seeing daily SSN's of 0 is occurring unusually early.

In 2016 there were 32 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of 0.
Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately three more
years, seeing daily SSN's of 0 is occurring unusually early.

As we move forward towards the next solar minimum between solar cycle #24
and #25 the number of days with a 0 daily sunspot number will dramatically
increase. Eventually most every day for many many months will see a 0.

In 2008 I forecasted solar cycle 24 to be the weakest in the past 100 years
and that came forecast verified. I also forecasted that solar cycle 25 would
be virtually non existent, similar to the Dalton type solar minimum that
occurred in the early 1800's.

Newly emerged sunspot group #12635 was located near N13E27 with a simple
beta magnetic signature.

Three small C class solar flares occurred and were associated with sunspot
group #12635.

No earth directed coronal mass ejections (CME) occurred.

No earth directed collapsing magnetic filament eruptions occurred.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) was at quiet
geomagnetic conditions 2 1 1 2 1 2 2 2.

The maximum and minimum planetary A index (Ap) ranged between 9 and 3, which
was at unsettled to quiet geomagnetic conditions.

The averaged background x-ray flux was A6.4.

The vertical component (Bz) of earth's magnetic field was -3.0 nT south.

The Dst ranged between -12 and +10.

No energetic proton events greater than 10 MeV (10+0) occurred.

The maximum and minimum solar wind speed was 448 and 373. km/s.

There was a recurrent transequatorial earth facing coronal hole #790 (#786).
During it's last passage across the earth facing side of the sun it produced
minor (Kp-4) negative impacts on HF radio wave propagation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kp geomagnetic indices are-
0-2- quiet
3- unsettled
4- active
5- minor geomagnetic storming
6- moderate
7- strong
8- severe
9- extreme
10- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.

The Ap geomagnetic indices are-
0-7- quiet
8-15 unsettled
16-29- active
30-49- minor geomagnetic storm
50-99- major
100-400- severe
>401- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!!  The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2017 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

11.) Rising positive T index number. The T Index tracks with the F2 layer
critical frequency (foF2) and sunspot number (SSN) and indicates the
capability of the F2 layer to refract RF signals.

12.) Galactic cosmic rays decrease to -3 units below zero and trending
towards zero.

13.) Energetic electron flux levels no greater than 2 MeV (2+0).

14. A solar wind speed of less than 300 km/s for several days consecutively.

Radio Pakistan switching to Digital with DRM

Radio Pakistan is converting its AM and FM transmitters to DRM+ technology. DRM is more spectrally efficient than both AM and FM. It allows more stations in a given bandwidth but it does that at a much higher quality than either AM or FM.
The present AM and FM transmitters of Radi o Pakistan can be made compatible to this technology with little amendment and to make its broadcasts clearer and cost-effective.
Director General, Radio Pakistan Mr Khurshid Malik visited the project at Broadcasting House in Islamabad and he was informed that under this technology, three channels can be aired from a single transmitter, which will prove cost-effective.
This technology enables listeners to get access to text services as well. Malik emphasized the need of improving contents of programmes besides introducing modern technology to cater the need of all segments of society.

Glenn Hauser logs February 8-9-10, 2017

** ASCENSION. 11810, Feb 8 at 2102, BBCWS news in English, poor signal but enough to hear that tell-tale hum, just like on 6005 at night, but not on all ASC transmitters (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOTSWANA. 11850, Feb 8 at 2058, VOA Hausa, fair, 2059 sign-off in English, 2100 YDD and off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5040, Feb 8 at 0705, RHC carrier is still on late, presumably after a previous hour of English; so the leapfrogs with 5025 upon 5010 and 5055 are also on, but only 5025 is left at 0708 recheck once 5040 has gone off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11600, Feb 9 at 1459, Denge Kurdistane is playing The Internationale, choral version, not sure what language but mentioned Russia just before it; so are the PKK Commies? I was checking for site switch, but song continues with some talkovers until 1501.5 cut to Kurdish music. S9-S7 and could not detect any break or site switch but still may have been a smoothie (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1600, Feb 8 at 2110 UT, KUSH Cushing with several classic country and classic rock tunes; 2116 UT ad string including promo for News9 (KWTV)`s latest weather gadget coming soon; 2118 UT ``Oklahoma`s Americana Station KUSH 1600 and KUSH.com, The Kush``. No longer with talkshows in afternoon, such as the sparsely-affiliated Marilu Henner show.

Upgrade from 1 to 5 kW ND daytime was completed some time ago, resulting in slightly better groundwave signal here; with 70 watts at night, we`d never know it exists vs the skywave from Denver, St Louis, Dallas, etc. In fact, during above log occasional fades produced SAH of 5 or 6 Hz, probably from Vietnamese Metroplexer KRVA, which is its major nemesis once skywave starts to kick in (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 11685, Feb 8 at 2103, REE audible poorly talking about a pelota, on the frequency for West Africa, but no signal on 9690 for North America. A17 plans to resume 17855 for us, if and when on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1863 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday February 8 at 2200 on WBCQ; 7490`s webcast only checked amid my recording 1864. Missed checking the next one, UT Thu Feb 9 at 0030 on WBCQ, 9330v-CUSB, but probably as it`s confirmed on later at 0105.

** U S A. 11825, Feb 8 at 2100 I notice that this WRMIBS transmitter is off. Back on the next day sometime (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4070.396, Feb 9 at 0656, beacon ZN is in again, sending ID about 15x per minute, and peaking CW at S8. Chris Smolinski, Maryland, replied to my previous logs on the UDXF.io group:

``Hi Glenn, There’s been a burst of new activity with respect to the unlicensed hobbyist beacons often found around 4 and 8 MHz. There is also a dasher that I have heard mornings around 4111 kHz, although I don’t think anyone else has reported it. From what I understand, these beacons are typically very low power, often in the 100 mW range. So they often require very good conditions to hear them, and I have noticed that there are very narrow windows of time when a particular beacon will be heard at my QTH. You might also want to try for the A beacon on 2097 kHz, apparently it runs significantly more power. I can hear it almost every morning``

Tnx, Chris. I hear beacon A on 2097.3 just about any time at night I check it (Quartzsite AZ). {listen at least 10 seconds for a repetition} Do none of the thousands of UDXFers know about ZN and GT? I`ve already tried searching the archives on calls and frequencies. 73, (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) No further replies there

Glenn Hauser logs February 7-8, 2017

** ANGUILLA. 6090, Feb 8 at 0426, CB/TUN/PMS/DGS is unusable, extremely suptorted, yet S9+45 of signal, and splatter bothering 6080 Turkey (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 7850-CUSB, Feb 7 at 0715, CHU is on and audible now at S9+10, unlike at previous check 0255.

3330, Feb 8 at 0416, CHU is on and audible here but not on 7850 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5055 & 5010, Feb 8 at 0431, R. Rebelde audio is dominant on both leapfrog mixing products over 5040 RHC from same site, as well as 5025 Rebelde fundamental. (One would expect 5010 modulation to favor 5040 from the opposite side.) 4765 Progreso is also on now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ETHIOPIA. 7234.56v, Feb 8 at 0421, R. Ethiopia presumed in variable split-frequency range, S9 with suptorted modulation.

7236.366v, Feb 8 at 1406, weak carrier now here by longpath. So it varies almost 2 kHz? Thorsten Hallmann says it varies from 7234 to 7237 during the day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 5935, Feb 8 at 1358, Shiokaze music as about to close, and with pulsing het from 5936, jamming? (Glenn Hauser, OK,  DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11600, Feb 7 at 1452, Denge Kurdistane is VP at S3-S5 during presumed PRIDNESTROVYE site segment; 1500 to dead air when presumed FRANCE site takes over, slightly weaker S2-S4 until resuming modulation at 1501.7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 700, Feb 8 at 1328, Indian drumming and fluting vs WLW. Presumed the indigenous station often audible around sunrise here, XEETCH, Etchojoa, Sonora, 5 kW daytimer, La Voz de los Tres Rios (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SIKKIM. 4835, Feb 8 at 1357, JBA carrier, presumed AIR Gangtok in lieu of VL8A; what else could it be? Also lots of carriers on 60m AIR and other Asian frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 9690, Feb 7 at 2134, NO signal from REE to North America, which ought to be well audible by this hour in winter; yet 15390 & 15500 beamed elsewhere are fairly audible. It`s not unusual for at least one transmitter to be down, as 9690 was for a week recently (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1863 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday February 7 at 2130 on WRMI 15770, and also confirmed on new // 6855, but both JBA here --- one too high, one too low and neither aimed this way. Also confirmed Tue Feb 7 at 2300 on WRMI 9955 (no //), vs wall-of-noise jamming left over from R. Libertad; by 2318 recheck jamming has diminished to light pulsing underneath; tnx a lot, Arnie? Also confirmed UT Wed Feb 8 at 0030 on WBCQ 9329.8v-CUSB, poor. Also confirmed Wed Feb 8 at 1415, gh WRMI ID and from 1415.5 WOR 1863, good but with some pulse jamming, still so at 1442; and // 6855 detectable at start with no jamming. Next:
Wed 2200   WBCQ 7490v to WSW
Thu 0030   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17775, Feb 8 at 1504, no signal from KVOH. Hard to know whether off or just not propagating yet an hour after listed sign-on. Recheck at 1758, now at least S9 with Spanish ID, modulation somewhat muffled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12105, Feb 7 at 2033 check, WTWW-3 is off, no Bibling Worldwide; still blasting on WTWW-2 9930, WTWW-1 9475 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 770, Feb 8 at 1334 UT, extended weather forecast, ``Newstalk 770 and 92.5, WVNN, where Alabama talks, depend on it``, 1335 UT on to `live & local Dale? Dave? Jackson Show. I was expecting to hear bleed from KKOB/KKOB already, 8 minutes after sunrise here, but WVNN is in full daytime, not faded out yet, 7000/250 watts U2, Athens AL. 92.5 is not a mere translator, but 3.1 kW WVNN-FM licensed to Trinity AL, which is way down the other side of Decatur.

Too bad Athenians can`t listen to WABC at night. NRC Pattern Book indicates WVNN is the closest non-daytimer 770 to WABC, i.e. 817 statute miles by air, per distancefromto.com --- that`s enough for no ``clear channel` protexion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 880-CUSB, Feb 8 at 0455 UT, KHAC Tse Bonito NM is dominant with no LSB, as always running 10 kW day power at night, and at :55 past most hours for about 2 minutes, interrupting programming for `American Family News` which is anything but, pushing far-right agenda, pro-Gorsuch & pro-DeVos (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1060+, Feb 8 at 1338 UT, KIJN Farwell TX, Spanish ad with heavy gringo accent for a pro-beef cattle-feeder in nearby Hereford TX, back to praise music; off-frequency on hi side making usual fast SAH with anything else (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1590, Feb 8 at 1352 UT, KVGB Great Bend KS with `News from the Oil Patch` by guy with non-radio voice; ads for petroleum businesses such as fishing lost equipment out of wells (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ZAMBIA. Hi Glenn, RE: Your comment that "This morning transmission is often cut off early in an hour or so (WRTH shows [ZNBC1] continuous until 2205), due to power outages. This ``load shedding`` problem is discussed in detail by Ray Robinson and Bill Bingham in DXLD 17-04. Electricity rates are also higher in the mornings, which caused VOH Africa to drop its morning broadcasts completely in favor of evenings. And more in 17-05 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

I haven't lived in Zambia for many years, so can't be sure. But I don't think Ray was suggesting that electricity from ZESCO is more expensive in the morning hence the move to evenings. I think he was suggesting that Voice of Hope had to use their own diesel generator to stay on air during load shedding, and running one's own diesel generator is extremely expensive, hence the move to evenings. I may be wrong about this, perhaps Ray will contact you himself to confirm.
Regards, (Bill Bingham, RSA, Feb 6, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Exactly right, Bill (Ray, Sent from my HTC One max on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, ibid.)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search February 8, UT, all looping WSW from down-under, except 1566-NW, surely Korea:

At 1317, 774, 702
At 1318, 684, 657
At 1320, 702, 792, 828
At 1322, 837, 882
At 1325, 1566-NW

Local sunrise here: 1326 UT, now earlying 1 minute per day. I`m not always awake in time to check for these, but my neighbor Richard Allen near Perry always seems to be, and reported today to IRCA:

``Pre-sunrise carrier signals heard on 612 and 702 kHz from DU direction, both strong at times. What's going on? There appears to be no correlation between solar activity and propagation!`` WWV had reported at 1200: solar flux 72, K-index 1, no storms (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7597.4, Feb 8 at 0418, the mystery open carrier is here again around S8 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 1814 UT February 8

Radio Australia Shortwave Station VL8A Signs Off in CW

In an apparent nod to radio amateurs who may have tuned in, Radio Australia’s VL8A transmitter in Alice Springs signed off on January 31 in CW. The station sent “73 de VL8A QRT,” before pulling the big switch. Radio Australia announced last fall that it planned to cease its shortwave transmissions this year. The broadcaster shut down its Katherine, Tennant Creek and Roe Creek (Alice Springs) transmitters at the end of January, but it said it would continue to broadcast on FM and AM bands, via satellite, and online streaming and mobile applications.

The move has not been popular with those who live and work in the vast area the shortwave broadcasts reached, with some saying it was the only reliable broadcast outlet, and that its demise could deprive Northern Australian listeners of emergency and critical weather information. Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association President Tom Stockwell, who lives on Sunday Creek Station with no access to AM or FM radio or mobile phone service, isn’t buying the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s explanation. He said the decision to focus on digital transmission ignored people in the bush. “It affects a big area of Australia, and it affects those people that are remote from other forms of communication that rely on radio network,” he said.

Mark Crocombe of the indigenous Thamarrurr Rangers in the remote community of Wadeye said his group members spend days and sometimes weeks at a time away in the bush and out on sea patrols and had relied on the ABC’s shortwave radio for weather reports and emergency information, including cyclone warnings. “Sure, it is expensive to keep the shortwave radio service going, but during cyclones, for the bush camps and people on boats, that is their only way of getting the weather reports,” he said. “It could be life threatening, if you are out and you don’t know a cyclone is coming.”

Radio Australia has said the move was in line with its commitment to dispense with outdated technology and to expand its digital content offerings and FM services. The ABC said it would put the money saved from ending shortwave broadcasting into other program distribution technology.
