Glenn Hauser logs October 26, 2014

** CUBA. 6165, Oct 26 at 0102, RHC English is AWOL while funxioning on 6000 (and 6060 is in proper language Spanish for a change); finally at *0106.4, 6165 pops on with program in progress, off and on and off and on, perhaps to stay (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 9420, Oct 26 at 0110, ERTOpen, GREECE is not on tonite, and not on 9415 either, but if and when they get back on 9420 they are in for a rude surprise: Radio República and the inevitable heavy Cuban jamming.

As I tune in 9420 at 0110, what`s this, something new in Spanish; check 6, 7, 9 and 11 MHz bands for //s but none found. Cuban accents and talking about Camagüey. Definitely not // RHC, Progreso, or Rebelde! 0111 about provincia de Mayabeque. Musical stingers intervene; 0113 song by una dominicana neoyorquina, ``Nadie como tú``. 0117 announcement mentioning this program was recorded in Miami, ``aquí en los Estados Unidos``, then YL with long talk about ébola, references to Cuba, gets in digs at ``la dictadura de Castro``.

No, it`s not // R. Martí 7365 either. But NO IDs. However, I can`t hear any trace of R. República on 9490, where there remains wall-of-noise Cuban jamming. 0123 poesía de Octavio Paz, with music. 0125 another song, then mentions `Sencillamente Mujer`; report from Camagüey about political prisoners, including Sonia somebody. Finally at 0133 ID as ``Radio República presenta Sencillamente Mujer``.

So R.R. has made a surprise frequency change from 9490 to 9420, presumably still via Issoudun, FRANCE. Good signal with rolling fades, and NO jamming --- yet, until the DentroCubans catch on. Latest HFCC B14 still shows 9490 for ``RMI`` at 00-03, NOT 9420. And presumably still using only last two hours of that span.

But what if GREECE comes back on its #1 frequency, 9420 where it was just last night after a foray to 9415 for three nights. Or were they trying 9415, having been tipped off about the pending exile jump? How could R.R. pick 9420 if they knew Greece would be on it to North America already? But then the ``rebels`` aren`t registering in HFCC. Stay tuned! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT [and non]. 9860, Oct 26 at 0026, seems dead air, fair with flutter, but then just barely modulated in Spanish. This is right at the transition from the A-14 to B-14 season when there could be some one-day clashes. In A-14, 9860 has been Iran in Spanish at 0020-0320 [see also IRAN].

12035, Oct 26 at 0040, Arab music, good signal but heavy distortion and hum à la Cairo, and now find it to be // 9860; 0044:28 mistimesignal ends and R. Cairo news theme. So did 9860 change from Iran to Egypt in the last few minutes or was it Egypt in the first place? In B-14, Cairo has registered 12035 at 2330-0200 in Arabic, then Spanish; and 9860 at 0045-0330 in Spanish, then English. But Cairo registers additional wooden frequencies to give them some flexibility.

9860, Oct 26 at 0242, R. Cairo English to N America is indeed here now, ex-9315; good signal but muffled and distorted so I have to listen intently for a while to be sure it`s English.

12080, Oct 26 at 0105, poor signal with distortion, flutter, i.e. R. Cairo Spanish, ex-12070 with the same degradation. JBA signal on 11710, maybe still //, and also on 9860 ex-9315.

** GREECE. 9420 & 9935, Oct 26 around 0030, ERTOpen is closed tonite, but if they come back on 9420 instead of 9415 they are in for a rude surprise: see CUBA [non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA [and non]. 9870, Oct 26 at 0108, VBS with Indian music, fair but fluttery, finally rid of TRT Spanish CCI during this hour. VBS at 0010-0435 via Bangalore should now be QRM-free. (Turkey`s Spanish makes usual shift an hour later to 0200-0250 but now on 9410 & 9650) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. IRIB`s B-14 Spanish is registered as: 0020-0220 on 9445, 0020-0320 on 7420. But Oct 26 at 0242 check I hear nothing on 7420. When there, it might be a problem for Albania at 0230 on 7425. In A14 these had been on 12025 and 9860 respectively (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also EGYPT

** PERU. 5980, Oct 26 from first check at 0025 past 0100, can`t detect a carrier from R. Chaski, so maybe off? WRMI is now starting the BSplash from 5985 at 0000 instead of 0100, which is no help (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 9730, Oct 26 at 0027, Spanish discussion of medical issues, 0029 outro `Romanía para el Mundo`, good and // weaker 9525, so RRI now on B-14 schedule of 00-01 Spanish on 7325, 7335, 9525 and 9730.

6145, Oct 26 at 0103, RRI in English with fair signal, new frequency and time for B-14: 01-02 on 6145 // 7325 (or if you prefer Romanian with its classical music on Saturday nights: 01-03 on 5910 // 7335). I think before 0100 tonight I was hearing Colombian music on 5910, but forget about it for the next bihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 28600-USB, Oct 26 at 0057, UA0IDZ with quick contest contacts in English from Zone 19. Unlike some others, his fonetix are clear, so no doubt about the call. I figure he is in the DVR, and so he is per QRZ.com lookup:
UA0IDZ Asiatic Russia
Igor Dubinin
P.O.Box 88
Magadan 685000
Russia
10 & 15 meters have been packed with DX contesters all day, and even 10 is still wide open well after dark here. Looks like they lucked into some above normal HF conditions. It takes a contest to fill 10m above 28500 or so, now up to 28700. This will be my token log for the contest and I didn`t even bother to copy some of his contact calls. I quickly tire of the get-on-and-get-off rat-a-tat no-nonsense contacts (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330v-CUSB, UT Sunday Oct 26 at 0031, ``Radio Clandestine`` (KLAN-des-tyne) introducing some Eric Clapton, very good // much weaker 7490v, and also synchronized on 5110v, i.e. really WBCQ playing back old pirate shows on Saturday`s `Pirate Pizza Night`; but this is not what the online schedule shows, as if on only one transmitter, and with nothing on 9330 at all on weekends:
Sa 7490 06:00PM 09:00PM ET 2200 0100 UTC Pirate Pizza Night
Sa 5110 07:00PM 09:00PM ET 2300 0100 UTC Radio Timtron Worldwide
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5850 & 7455, UT Sun Oct 26 at 0034, surprised to find no signals from WRMI`s TruNews subcontractor, clearing 7455 for the RTTY. All the other WRMI frequencies are on, so not a power failure. But 5850 & 7355 appear at 0100, in accordance with new B-14 schedule which is up promptly now at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nEVwCMB9RSKowLzLXamyayVpCzjmPAw_SB1r3YOdzQc/edit#gid=0
showing T.N. at reduced hours of 01-07 UT but on three frequencies, adding 5015 southwards (instead of BS but who is still on it afterwards). T.N. starts at 0100 as `Radio Paradise[?]` ``with your end-time newsman, Rick Wiles`` who imagines the date is ``Friday October 24`` instead of 25 or even 26. So much for his time-keeping.

15190.0, Oct 26 at 0045, undermodulated gospel rock music, must be Radio Africa Network on WRMI: yes, per B-14 schedule, 15190 is now on air from 2103 until 0300. Goodbye, Inconfidência (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5810, Oct 26 at 0105, WEWN is AWOL, tho scheduled from 0000, but still very much present on 11520 English and 11870 Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7555, Oct 26 at 0105, KJES is off and still off by 0130. Not until Nov 3 should this nominally undaylight shift to an 0200-0330 schedule, when they get around to it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 6175, Oct 26 at 0102, VOV in English, now on B-14 frequency ex-12005 via Woofferton UK. While 6175 will be less subject to propagation variations thru winter nites, it`s only fair now. Why in the world don`t they use WHRI for all their relays to North America? In B-14, English on 6175 at 0330 is WHRI, but 0100 & 0230 are still and again WOF (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Democratic V of Burma finale imminent

** BURMA [non]. Myanmar exile radio DVB leaves shortwave, goes online | Text of report in English by Norway-based, Myanmar-focused Democratic Voice of Burma website on 23 October

Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), the country's longest running exile broadcaster, which first aired in 1992, will enter a new phase on 26 October, switching from shortwave to online radio.

"Surveys show fewer people listen to shortwave nowadays, therefore DVB is focusing more of its content on new digital media and TV output, which will also be available via internet and mobile phones," said Aye Chan Naing, executive director of DVB Multimedia Group.

October 2014 marks the end of an era for DVB radio, which was arguably the pioneer of Burmese exile broadcasting.

Journalist Maung Too, who was a field reporter for DVB since its inception as a voice for the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF), reminisced about the days when Burma was iron curtained. His colleagues fondly tease him as a rebel by day who moonlighted as a reporter.

"We are talking of a time when nobody knew what was happening inside the country; there was war and fighting and human rights violations, a repressive political atmosphere and information control," said Maung Too.

The then exiled Burmese prime minister, Sein Win, requested assistance from the Norwegian government to help establish a radio station to reach Burma with information that the military regime would otherwise censor. Thus from Oslo, on 19 July 1992, the first shortwave transmission was broadcast.

The demographic disposition of Burma, with large-scale poverty and illiteracy in remote regions, made radio news a permeable, feasible and ultimately popular medium among the public.

The process of broadcasting one single episode seemed tenuous and long, but as Maung Too recounts the early years, one cannot miss the adventure that outlined the production of each episode.

"In those days the process of broadcasting news in itself was a struggle, as we were not allowed inside Burma," he said, explaining how each episode was recorded on tape and sent to Bangkok, from where it would be sent to Oslo to be transmitted.

"In a way, [DVB] always echoed the unified voices of all the ethnic groups in Burma - Shan, Karen, Chin, Mon - against the injustice of the military government," said a senior DVB reporter.

DVB radio gained notoriety with the Burmese military junta to the extent that the regime described it as "a killer broadcast designed to cause troubles" which was "sowing hatred among the people".

DVB radio was often accused of being biased towards Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy. However it has always maintained that it was never affiliated to any party but rather considered itself a part of the movement fighting for change in Burma's political system. "We have maintained a policy of giving voice to the democratic movement in Burma," says DVB deputy executive director Khin Maung Win.

In 2005, DVB expanded into the domain of TV broadcasting.

Asked if video was effectively killing off radio, Khin Maung Win said, "I don't think so. We are just entering a new phase." He explained that there is a possibility that the contents of the radio shows would be aired via other mediums and partnerships in Burma. DVB will also apply for FM radio licences in Burma, he added.

The last episode of DVB radio will be broadcast from its Chiang Mai station on Sunday morning, 26 October, from 6 -7 a.m.

Glenn Hauser logs October 25, 2014

** BRAZIL. 11745, Oct 25 at 0537, RNA distorted spur with music matching fundamental 11780; weak but definitely there. On matching 11815 it`s also JBA vs BSplash from 11825 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6070, Oct 25 at 1300, JBA signal with ad, fading up for Canadian PSA, ``news-Talk 10-10 from the broadcast centre in downtown Toronto``, 9 am news update. Very poor with fades. So maybe CFRX really was on 24 hours earlier when I couldn`t hear them. Too far for all-day reception here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 13850, Oct 25 at 0535, R. Cairo is the SSOB by far, not even Australia on 13630, but transmitting open carrier/dead air --- another great triumph of the ERTU (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420, Oct 25 at 0538, ERTOpen with Greek music still on original frequency, very good with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 770, Oct 25 at 1249, PSA about mosquitos from the Sinaloa department of Salud, 1245 back to ``Los 40 Principales``, i.e. Top 40 from XEREV, Los Mochis, 5/0.1 kW per IRCA Mexican Log 2014. Sinaloa, in the sesquimegameter range, continues to be a hotspot for MexDX at SRS here which is 1248 UT today; see also 1410 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1410, Oct 25 at 1255, PSA from the Secretaría de -algo- de Sinaloa. IRCA shows XECF, Los Mochis, 10/0.5 kW, La Mexicana. Sinaloa, in the sesquimegameter range, continues to be a hotspot for MexDX at SRS here which is 1248 UT today; see also 770. City-to-city distance Los Mochis-to-Enid is: 1583 km = 984 miles (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 6170, Oct 25 at *1259, RNZI cuts on with Bell Bird IS, at the correct time to switch from 9700, unlike yesterday when 6170 was on earlier, unbeknownst to the studio playing the QSY announcement anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM. 7906-USB, Oct 25 at 1306, YL in English, very weak but enough to copy ``longitude``, no doubt a notice to mariners of the coordinates of some obstruxion in Viet waters, i.e. Ho Chi Minh Radio. But there is CCI from some other talk, maybe a sibling station misfiring? The frequency is time-shared by many others (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

VOA Radiogram, Oct 25-26: shortwave in the news

VOA Radiogram this weekend includes news about shortwave initiatives, and about undersea microbes that eat methane.

Details:
http://voaradiogram.net/post/100828797787/voa-radiogram-25-26-oct-2014-shortwave-in-the-news

Most of the show is in MFSK32.  Patch the audio from your radio to your PC, and use Fldigi from w1hkj.com to decode the text and images. You'll be amazed at what a 50-year-old shortwave broadcast transmitter can do.

If shortwave reception conditions, such as this weekend's solar events, render voice content difficult to comprehend, digital text often gets through.

VOA Radiogram transmission schedule
(all days and times UTC):
Sat 0930-1000 5745 kHz
Sat 1600-1630 17860 kHz
Sun 0230-0300 5745 kHz
Sun 1930-2000 15670 kHz
All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.

Glenn Hauser logs October 24-25, 2014

** ALBANIA. 9845, Oct 25 at 0126, still no signal from R. Tirana, but it`s on by 0127 with IS once, 0128 stops with carrier only, then off and on, no more IS, and shortly after 0130 theme, at 0130:15 signing on in English. This is the penultimate broadcast of the year on 9845, to be replaced by 7425 at 0230 from UT October 28 (and on WOR 1744 I neglected to specify that this and the 2100 English to Europe on 7465 take local Sundays off) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA [and non]. 6070-, Oct 24 at 2246, ``News-Talk 10-10`` ID from CFRX, good signal and in the clear, some 24 hours after first heard reactivated, and some 10 hours since I found it missing again in the morning; maybe erratic.

By next check 0033 UT Oct 25, heavy QRM with CUBA which was already using 6070+ all-evening, before CFRX last crashed. At this time here, the pair are about equal levels, making them equally useless, with a SAH of about 8 Hz as Wolfgang Büschel observed yesterday: CFRX is 4 Hz lo and RHC is 4 Hz hi. This is rather remarkable, considering that RHC is allegedly aiming 250 kW plus many dB of hi gain right at us, while CFRX is but 1 kW non-direxional. By 0126, CFRX has lost out to RHC dominance.

So much for friendlier relations between Cuba and Canada. 6070 has been CFRX`s frequency forever (it was old already when I got my first QSL in 1957y), and Canadian SW stations do not have any frequency flexibility. RHC has lots of choices on the 49m band; for instance, there`s nothing much (except maybe Brasil) on 6080, if RHC really needs another frequency so close to 6060. O yeah, some lite intermittent pulse jamming against nothing, so Cuba already knows 6080! In B-14, IBB/VOA usage of 6080 ends at 2200, resumes at 0300 from eastern hemisphere sites, so the 03-04 hour could be a problem with VOA English via Vatican to Africa. Keep looking?

With B-14 seasonal adjustments coming up shortly, now would be an excellent time for Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich, frequency manager of RHC, to put this right and move off 6070 --- but don`t count on it, even tho it would also be to RHC`s own advantage to avoid this interference (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6060, Oct 25 at 0106, RHC is in wrong language, English instead of Spanish, so // 6000 & 6165; 6060 weaker than the others. Aoki says it`s 100 kW on 10 degree azimuth up the east coast (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CANADA [non] re collision with 6070 CFRX

** EGYPT. 9965, Oct 25 at 0040, R. Cairo, Arabic with Qur`an, whine, fair with flutter

9315, Oct 25 at 0045, R. Cairo opening Spanish with theme music, not distorted but undermodulated

11710, Oct 25 at 0045, R. Cairo Spanish is just the het with Argentina on the hi side; and its pitch varies as one or both stations are affected by ionospheric Doppler following the blackout a few hours earlier (See USA).

12070, Oct 25 at 0045, R. Cairo Spanish, music // 9315 but here it is very distorted with humwhine (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9935, Oct 25 at 0041, ERTOpen, good with Greek music, and no breakup tonite on this transmitter ---- and // is back on 9420 at 0042 check, none heard in the 11s or 15s. The 9420 transmitter had been on 9415 instead the past three nights; why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9380, Oct 25 at 0043, open carrier/dead air, fair with flutter, no doubt AIR Aligarh warming up for the 0100 Vividh Bharati service as per
http://qsl.net/vu2jos/sw/freq.htm rather than Aoki which still mislabels it the National Channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1510, Oct 25 at 0112 UT, with WLAC nulled, romantic song in Spanish, YL really belting it out, but fades out and in; 0117 DJ introduces next tune as ``tiempo de vals`` and it certainly is, vocal with a strong 3/4 beat almost matching the meter of the pumping subaudible heterodyne with WLAC, or a third station? 0121 another announcement, and next a rock song in English, or is that another station? 0130 another longer announcement by OM DJ conversing with a YL who laughs, about compositores, then a polca.

Nowhen is there anything resembling an ID, ad or local reference, which furthers my assumption that it`s cultural XEQI, Monterrey NL; but I am almost to the point of pining for an intrusive super-hype voice actor to shout an ID every three minutes like on many other Mexicans. Last year`s IRCA Mexican Log showed power as 50/0.25 kW, but this year, it`s 10 kW period in the day-power column, but ``24 hours``. WRTH 2014 also showed 10 kW fulltime; and Cantú currently has it at 10 kW days only. The slogan to be caught is ``La Nueva Radio`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925-USB, Oct 25 at 0034, poor pirate signal with variety of music, beeps, dramatization of something, mentions radiation level; 0040 overridden by CW sending V`s and then SALLO--- something a few times. Pirate had stopped by 0046. This thread
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,19060.0.html
says it was Rave On Radio about a zombie attack (ahem, we`re still a week from Hallowe`en, when there should be a lot more pirate activity, plus WBCQ) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, UT Sat Oct 25 at 0109, local KZLS Enid-Hennessey-Oklahoma City is obviously another Friday-night ``STA`` cheater running day power to enhance its coverage during a silly ballgame, breaking its mostly talk-radio format, which judging from a mention during an adstring is ``Yukon-Miller football`` (Yukon is a western suburb of OKC, not a territory, but Miller?). The big sig of 10 kW direxional is splattering upon adjacents 1630 & 1650 just like in the daytime! No chance of nulling it now for WTNI like really with 1 kW last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OMAN [non]. 9500, Oct 25 at 0059, no signal from RSO where it should be; 15140 occupied only by CRI with music fill and 0100 IS; nothing on 15355, but RSO may be unpropagating on one of these alternate 19mb channels.

HFCC B-14 has all these registered on the 315 antenna USward at 00-02: 9500, 9545, 11650 (pick one, only one); plus earlier in the day still 15140, 15355 likely to be prolonged (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 25 at 0035, JBA carrier from R. Chaski. After 0100, heavier splatter ACI than usual from 5985 WRMI BS, so I can barely make out the carrier with BFO, until cutoff at 0104:34* which is 47.5 seconds later than my last check an octonite ago, i.e. averaging 5.94 seconds later per uninite (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Oct 25 at 0114 I have one ear on the PL-880 while bandscanning on the DX-398, but tonight no carrier cuts on during this minute with music; instead, cuts on just in time for the last mistimepip at 0115:19.5 and sign-on of SLBC. Also seems to be powering up during these initial seconds to a fairly good level (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. SW blackout from a major solar flare --- Checking for World of Radio at 2130 Oct 24 on WRMI 15770 and 7570 --- JBA carrier on 15770, and all other US-based SWBC signals are either inaudible or greatly attenuated. WWV reports:

``:Product: Geophysical Alert Message wwv.txt

By 2157, 15770 has recovered enough to tell that latest WOR 1744 is on there. Meanwhile, unusually at 2217 UT, WWV reissues the 2100 Geophysical Alert Message with some changes to the last part:

``Space weather for the past 24 hours has been strong.
Radio blackouts reaching the R3 level occurred.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be moderate.
Solar radiation storms reaching the S1 level are expected.
Radio blackouts reaching the R2 level are likely.``

And later the details of the event:

Further airings of WORLD OF RADIO 1744:
Sat 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUSB
UT Sun 0131 on KVOH 9975
Sun 1000 on WRMI 5850
Sun 2300 on WRMI 11580
UT Mon 0300v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; etc.
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330+CUSB, UT Sat Oct 25 at 0044, `Allan Weiner Worldwide` on WBCQ, slightly on the hi side, as AW is mentioning that `Marion`s Attic` Sundays at 5-6 pm [EDT = 21-22 UT this week, 22-23 UT from November], is on 7490 AND 15420. We knew he agreed to add 15420v-CUSB one week, but now it is apparently regular (and indeed has been added as the only non-GSP program on this schedule
http://schedule.wbcq.com/main.php?fn=sked&freq=15420
of 15420). He also alludes to ``another network coming on SW`` as a good thing, apparently referring to Global 24 which starts in exactly one week via WRMI 9395. Now there`s nothing audible on 15420, but weaker 7490 is // and synched, while 5110v-CUSB is // but 35 seconds behind the others. I suppose that signal has to be routed by internet thru the Radio Free Mount Airy studio in Maryland, then back to the Monticello transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7505.2 approx., Oct 25 at 0054, WRNO is already on with gospel huxter, big hum, and parasitic noise spurs spreading out each side as far as 7493 and 7515. WBCQ on 7490 barely escapes the mess, and the hi side is stopped short of 7517 only by the equally bigsig from 7520 WWCR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1680, UT Sat Oct 25 at 0108 UT, silly ballgame instead of country music, Panthers football, a Friday-night aberration from KRJO Monroe LA; also some CCI talk underneath as seldom the case audible during music. Normal good signal level, probably really 1 kW. Some months ago when it first reactivated in August? I suspected it was underpowered, but that recovered quite a while ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1690, Oct 25 at 0109 UT, KDDZ Arvada (Denver market) CO must still be going as Disneyc music is heard, stronger than further WVON Berwyn (Chicago market) IL with ID and talk; and the two are mutually nullable on the rotatable DX-398 with no trace of the other. Eyeballing a US map, they look to be 100-105 degrees apart from the angle of Enid (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 23-24, 2014

** AUSTRALIA. 6080, 6150, 9475, 9580, 12065, 12085, just as I suspected, R. Australia has totally changed programming this week compared to last Friday, when `Jazz Up Late` was on until 1330, then `Overnight from Classic FM` (classical). Friday Oct 24 at 1225, obviously not jazz but a talk program, with several odd scientific interviews, e.g. about athletic injuries; how high can a skyscraper made of wood go? So far only 10 stories before it collapses, but someone is working on a way to reach 20-30 stories, and adds that wood is *not* so (in)flammable and could even survive a fire better than steel, merely getting charred on the outside.

1241 ID as ``The Naked Scientists on RN`` and now an item about retrieving nasty fat, oil and grease (FOG) from London sewers they are constantly clogging and turning it into a fuel source for --- sewage treatment. At 1258 I can also barely hear it on 5995, echo apart from Shep, rather than Waltzing Matilda. 1259 promo for ``Sound Quality after the news, on RN`` --- the serious music show we used to enjoy. But not on RA any more! At 1305 all cut to rap-crap in progress, obviously back to Triple J network`s `Earthbeat` for the next quadrihour (and again no newsbreak at 1400).

According to this,
http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/nakedscientists/
It`s scheduled Fridays at 10 pm, presumably meaning 10:05, = 1105 UT. And info on this week`s ep:http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/nakedscientists/new-document/5828978

Only by consulting the entire RN PDF program grid do we confirm that `TNS` is just one hour, tho we are hearing it an hour later, maybe on Queensland delayed feed? `The World` TV news audio should have still appeared `live` at 11-12 UT. That`s what RA`s own online program schedule still shows, uncorrected with nothing at 12-13, and Earthbeat after 13 to 17 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BANGLADESH. 15505, Oct 24 at 1359, BB carrier is JBA, trace of IS, and also trace of mistimesignal ending at approx. 1359:54, before Urdu service (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11745, Oct 24 at 0532, RNA distorted spur // 11780 music is JBA here vs local noise level, but not on 11815, probably obscured by the BS blast of splash from 11825 WRMI. RNA better pay attention to the spurs before they too blast out again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6070.0, CFRX Toronto is back! At least a 5-minute ad-string upon tune-in 2235 UT October 23, starting with Hallowe`en costumes, promos for Marketplace on CBC [television, understood] at 8 pm, and something else at 9, before ``News-Talk 10-10`` ID at 2240 and into Events of the Day. Sufficiently fair signal before RHC will wipe it out at 2300. Tnx to tip from WH2XDE`s Jerry Whitney in NY after 19 UT today.

As Robert Lang, who first heard CFRX at 2200 Oct 23, points out, the ODXA site for CFRB/CFRX,
http://cfrx.webs.com/ now proclaims: ``Status ON. As of 12:30 pm today [EDT = 1630 UT], October 23, 2014, CFRX was put back on the air.`` John Figliozzi found 1 kW CFRX to be an ``S9+ signal up here in New York (near Albany), absolutely burying Cuba at the moment (0154).`` Aoki supposes that RHC 6070 at 23-04 is 250 kW at 315 degrees right across mid-America. When both are audible, you should hear an 8 Hz SAH, as Wolfgang Büschel measured CFRX at 4 Hz below, and RHC 4 Hz above 6070.000.

Looks like ``commercial SW`` is again alive and well. Now to check the CFRB non-RHC-hours program schedule for anything of interest. Instead of all-comedy overnight as previously, now it`s only two hours, 0400-0600 UT M-F, right after Cuba closes:

``HUMBLE & FRED

Beginning on Monday January 21, the funny and irreverent duo "Humble" Howard Glassman and Fred Patterson return to commercial radio with their popular show on NEWSTALK 1010 from midnight to 2AM.

Since October 2011, Humble and Fred have been broadcasting a podcast at
http://humbleandfredradio.com - a daily dose of humour uncut, uncensored, but definitely clever and interesting.

"Howard and Fred are thrilled to be back and look forward to a long and healthy relationship at Astral, said Humble." "Having worked hard at trying to wreck the internet, we are happy to be back for another crack at wrecking radio."

They will also be regular contributors to NEWSTALK 1010's programming throughout the week.``

There`s a lot more variety on the weekends, especially if you`re close enough to get CFRX in the daytime.

Next check of 6070, 0525 UT October 24, during Humble & Fred show, evidently raw as they are getting bleeped, not ``uncensored`` here! Poor but clear, except RHC is splashing upon 6070 from 6060.

Next next check of 6070, at 1257 Oct 24, CFRX is gone again! --- JBA carrier, probably North Korea. Altho it`s an all-day path now from Toronto to Enid, as I recall, the sun is still low enough for some signal to propagate. Did the transmitter crash again or was the latest activity just a test? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 9230, Oct 24 at 1254, CNR1 jammer, fair with flutter. No others OOB found higher in quick cursory bandscan (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Re: ``A greater anomaly is reported to me by Mike Stone in Arlington Heights IL: ``Hi Glen[n], Radio Havana Cuba at 2130 GMT, 6165 kHz, 10-15-14, English service with Latin Music and talk. Very good S7 signal with Yaesu FT840 and 45 foot longwire``. That`s a completely off-schedule emission both in frequency and in language (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

I later asked Mike about this anomaly, and he corrects the time: 2130 was really CDT = 0230 UT, so nothing out of the ordinary. RHC is off the hook on this one (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15370, Oct 24 at 1320, RHC Spanish mentioning that it`s United Nations Day, and then bringing up a UN Radio report about ébola. RHC is really the main SW outlet for UN Radio, which long ago had many hours available via US/VOA transmitters. Why did they ever let that go? We often hear UNR segments on RHC, but apparently at no specific times, so not formal relays which could be put into a reliable schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CANADA: CFRX

** EGYPT. 9965, Oct 23 at 2250, R. Cairo with tone test at quite a different pitch than the constant whine, fair signal, prior to the English sesquihour to North America. 2300 is the time to get it, as the next one at 0200 on 9315 is usually unusable with little or no modulation or signal.

Per HFCC B-14 as of Oct 26, ERU plans to continue 9965 for English at 2300-2430; while at 0200-0330 four frequencies are listed, presumably only one to be used: 9315, 9720, 9835, 9860! The 2115-2245 English to Europe could be on any one of: 9895, 9900, 11890.

Even more wooden stuff for Spanish: 0045-0200 on 9315, 9720, 9835, 9860, 11670, 11710, 12035, 12070, 12080, 13620, 13855! Pick three like the ones currently attempted: 9315, 11710, 12070. Look at 11670: that would collide with Cuba.

13850 is also on the B-14 schedule to continue at 02-07, Arabic to North America (if not alternate duplicate 9905), and 13850 heard here Oct 24 at 0533 with VG signal but Arabic modulation very distorted favoring the spikes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GOA. 9705-, Oct 23 at 2246, AIR GOS opening English but with squeals which vary with modulation; during a long pause, the squeal stays at a constant pitch. Much like the squeals we hear from WEWN and some other stations, who are clueless how to fix it (by replacing modulation cards) or even that they have such a problem.
B14 HFCC shows AIR plans to continue using this via Panaji:
9705 2230 0045 49,50,54 PAN 250 120 0 157 1234567 261014 290315 D AIR

Wolfgang Büschel measured 30 Hz low on: ``9704.970 IND AIR Goa Panaji English service, 2245-0045 UT, 2347 UT Oct 17`` And also reported the squeal on another GOA off-frequency, 29 Hz low, perhaps same transmitter: ``9809.971, AIR Goa Panaji, 1115-1245 UT in Tamil and Telugu. But audio is annoying, high-pitched squealing tone accompanying the audio. And co-channel QRM of CNR 2nd program too. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 17/18/19/20)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9935, Oct 23 at 2245, ERTOPen is on here in Greek and suffering heavy ACI from the BS on 9930 WTWW; // 9415 which looks to be a permanent change. Maybe avoiding China certain hours on 9420 tho I have never noticed it; Iran already moved its lengthy Arabic broadcast months ago from 9420 to 9510. Nothing at all had been listed on 9415 in Aoki; but Greece on 9415 now causes ACI to 9410 stations such as BBC.

HFCC B-14 public file lacks any listings for Greece, but has China on 9415 at 08-10 & 23-24.

9415 // 9935 ERTOpen still on at 0528 Oct 24 in Greek (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11510, Oct 24 at 1351, wonderful vocal music of the PKK terrorists on V. of Mesopotamia, via PRIDNESTROVYE, and good to very good signal too but marred by some IADs. If you have any 23 MHz propagation during the long hours this is on, try 2 x 11510 = 23020 as heard by Robin Harwood on the Utwente receiver (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1744, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1300-, Oct 24 at 1405 UT, romantic music in Spanish, 1407 UT ``son las 8 --- con 7`` autotimecheck, from the UT-6 zone; no doubt XEP Ciudad Juárez, still dominant slightly on lo side compared to neighbors, making fast SAH with Tulsa(?), still in more than an hour after sunrise here with its 38 kW day power, second in CiJz only to XEROK 800 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185-, Oct 23 at 2243, soft vocal jazz tune, ``Misty``, slightly on the lo side, as XEPPM is obviously on the air already (and maybe has been all day); next check at 0526 UT Oct 24, it`s off again, instead of sometimes prolonged to 0600v (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 6170, Friday Oct 24 at 1256 I find that RNZI is again on this frequency early, interview with drumming sounders; don`t know how early, as I was paying attention to RA on 6150 et al. 1258 Adrian Sainsbury announces QSY *to* 6170, where they already are instead of 9700, and Bell Bird IS. 1308 after news, `Dateline Pacific` so Pacificans are still getting something useful while RA has descended into rap-crap for a quadrihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 9765, Thu Oct 23 at 2248, RRI with classical music, English announcement, fair. From Oct 26 for B-14, this hour shifts to 2300-2357, on 6015 and 7220 via Galbeni at 285 and 290 degrees; 7395 and 9620 via Tiganeshti at 52 degrees. Here in OK I expect the lower bands not to be an improvement, at least not yet. 7220 will of course hit QRhaM as it spreads beyond Europe. Both it at 6015 are registered as only for CIRAF 27N, not US (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND [and non]. 9390, Oct 24 at 1229, open carrier from R. Thailand, 1230 chimes, military band, anthem? ``Public Relations Department`` opening `Newshour`, W&M alternating with headlines, time check as 7:02 (I think, so this is half an hour delayed?), 1232 ad for major sponsor Bangkok Airways. Fair signal with heavy flutter.

This is the final week for ACI-free reception of Thailand on 9390, as WRMI begins 9395 on Nov 1 for 24 hours a day across North America, while HSK9 plans to stay on 9390 in B-14 for numerous broadcasts including four in English, notably the one we hear best at 1230-1300 altho intended for SE Asia, Australia. The so-called North American service makes its usual move from mostly inaudible 15590 in A-season to 13745 in B-season, English at 0000-0100 & 0200-0230; let us hope, less inaudible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1744 monitoring: on WWRB 3185 webcast, UT Thursday Oct 23 at 0329.5, preacher stops, hum comes up and shortly WOR playback starts with a blast, but stops before the intro finishes. 0330.5 try to start again, OK until abrupt stop at 0333. Then Dave comes on and apologizes for another week without WOR --- says he doesn`t know why this is happening. Computer people checked and said everything was OK. Hymn music, and then back to Tullahoma. Next:

Friday 2130 on WRMI 7570, 15770
Saturday 0630 & 1430 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
UT Sunday 0131 on KVOH 9975
Sunday 1000 on WRMI 5850
Sunday 2300 on WRMI 11580
UT Monday 0259v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB
Tuesday 1100 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
[HLR presumed shifted winter time like in B-13 season]
Wednesday 1315 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 2100 on WBCQ 7490v
[US times shift one hour later from Nov 2, except 5850, 7570, 15770]
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1370, Oct 23 at 2258 UT, something looping NW/SE with CCI, 1-800-MYSOLAR ad, just can`t make out any 2259 UT ID before CBS bong and news sounder at 2300 UT. I`m here seeking any trace of KGNO Dodge City KS on SSS, since I can`t hear it on daytime groundwave and suspect it`s off the air. But NRC AM Log doesn`t have CBS on it; the most likely affil in neighboring states would be KJCE Rollingwood TX (Austin market). I`ve been monitoring since 2230 UT during the partial solar eclipse, in case there`s anything of interest. Skywave is in at top end of band, but not really unusual. Clouds cleared for less than a minute, not long enough to set up a projexion for a glimpse of the Moonbite (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1640, Oct 24 at 0542 I find that local KZLS (site really east of Hennessey OK with 1 kW, but direxional SSE/NNW toward OKC/Enid) is totally nullable except for a fast SAH, audiblizing ESPN Radio, obviously the only one on 1640 and at somewhat CCW angle from KZLS, WTNI Biloxi MS. I wonder if they are also on 10 kW day power giving them an additional edge (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1600-1602+, Oct 24 at 1401-1403+ UT, noise blob moving slowly upward across 1600 station, as previously heard in the 1610-1620+ range in the night; so maybe it`s something nearby (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 13560, Oct 24 at 0536, I`m checking the Part 15 frequency for ISM hash like I hear all day, and now I am not, but it`s still inconclusive whether it`s from nearby medical equipment but turned off now, or if from far away, but not propagating in the nightmiddle.

I am however hearing CW beeps on 13560.0 which at first seem at the rate of one per second, but counting them over a minute, there are 63 per, not good for timekeeping. Now, are these local or propagating? No HIFER beacons audible in the area at the moment (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
