** BRAZIL. High-latitude paths wiped out by geomag storm, leaving little but weak Brazilians on 25m, April 6 at 0616, wacky wailing preacher David Miranda detectable on 11765v and something surely Bandeirantes on 11925 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA [and non]. For the first time in many months, geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level have occurred, says SWPC, and the K-index hit 7 at 12 UT on April 5. Since then every three hours the K has been reported as 5-4-3-2-5-6-4-4-4, ending at 15 UT April 6. Solar flux and A-indices: April 4, 79 and 12; April 5, 79 and 37.

This has severely degraded SW reception, except on the lower frequencies and except for southerly paths on some higher bands. For example, April 6 at 1355, CRI relay via Sackville on 15260 was quite weak instead of usual inbooming, while // 9650 was still strong. ** CUBA. Typo in previous report of RHC schedule:
15380 runs 11-23 and 00-05 to Buenos Aires. (not 11-12!)

Further chex of RHC new schedule: April 6 at 0608 English on new 5970 which is ex-6140 now missing, and sounds just like it did, with low modulation, // 6010 and 6060. At 0624 a stronger image appeared on 5960, receiver mix due to overload from 6060 and 6010, but vanished with attenuation. Spanish was only on 6120, 6150 and 5040 at 0608.

At 1402 I monitored the frequency announcement on 11760: same as yesterday, in fact I think recorded as speaker hesitated at exactly the same spot, before saying 11730 --- still omitting 12030 and 15380, while claiming to be on abolished 11800 and 13760, i.e.:

``15120, 15360, 13760, 13680, 13780, 11760, 11730, 11800, 6110``

New 12030 was also again audible, but not 15380 due to poor propagation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Enid`s X-band station, 1640 has just changed format. It had been Fox sports talk, but who needs that with Chisholm Trail`s other station KCRC 1390 also sportstalk with ESPN?? Well, we ``needed`` that for several years. But this church-on-every-streetcorner town has an even greater ``need`` ---

First noticed April 6 as I tuned by at 0618 UT playing country gospel music! 0621 slogan thrice as ``solid gospel music``, and ``The new Faith 1640``. Are the calls still KFXY?

Yes, next check at 1557 UT again slogan ``The new Faith 1640``, and 1559 legal ID as ``KFXY, Enid-Oklahoma City, bringing you the best, a better variety of southern gospel music, the new Faith 1640``.

1600 into SRN News, which consists of two minutes of seemingly secular world news, a minute of religious promotion, and the remaining two minutes of the ``news`` with a pro-Christian, anti-Moslem slant.

1605 back to gospel music. Thus KFXY has switched from one totally useless format to another, as far as I am concerned. Now that I have got the word out, back to ignoring 1640.

As a reminder, this station is one of few on the X-band with a direxional antenna, same day and night, NNW/SSE from a site a few miles east of Hennessey, so it gets into city of license OK and also into Oklahoma City, 10 kW day and 1 kW night, --- but makes it difficult to DX in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and also in much of North America, off the sides of the beam (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11970, new frequency for VOA Spanish, April 5 at 2350 with report about controversy over some musical event in Shanghai, // and synchronized with 9885 so suspect it is Greenville. Have not found it on any schedule yet, apparently a last-minute change for listed 11625; also // heavily jammed 5890 but no jamming audible on 11970 yet. Poor signal as propagation is pitiful today with high K-indices and G3-level geomag storms (see CANADA).

Wolfgang Büschel had heard something in Spanish here a few days ago, April 1 after 0000, which would be the Tue-Sat A Fondo program.

Yes, at 0015 check April 6, nothing on 11625, but 11970 // 9885 // 5890 with A Fondo, and no jamming audible on any of them now, unlike // 6030 R. Martí with same program this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WWRB, 5050, recently expanded to all-night operation, was always running Biblical dramatizations in English when I tuned across it, but at 0428 April 6 in Spanish instead with programming called ``Con la Biblia Abierta`` which may be from the same source. Tnx to an inquiry from José Elías Díaz Gómez, Venezuela, who had just heard an unID, something in Spanish IDing as Radio Mundial.

They plugged website http://www.conlabibliaabierta.com which has an uninformative Radiodifusión link with nothing about WWRB, but mentions 1700 and 1500 kHz in South Florida and Cuba, including a program called Radio Mundial.

** U S A. High-latitude paths missing due to high K-indices, leaving southerly signals at good or better levels than usual, April 6 at 0614, WRMI 9955, R. Prague via WRN, in English with Science Journal, appropriately about robots, the very concept of which originated in Czechia with Karel Chapek`s R.U.R. SF story of the early twenties.

From across the lake, WYFR was also extremely strong on 31m, 9715, 9680, 9355 and new 9385 ex-9340.

Nearby signals above 5 MHz which usually hold up well thru the nightmiddle, WTWW 5755, WWCR 5890 and 5935 were quite weak; WWCR 4840 strong enough but less signal than usual; and the lower ones loud and unaffected, WWCR 3215 and WWRB 3185 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

WEEK 483 from 2010 Mar 29 

SOLAR ACTIVITY
--------------

Two sunspot groups were observed on the Sun during the last week: Catania numbers 54 and 56, NOAA ARs 1057 and 1059 respectively. The Catania sunspot group 54 did not produce any noticeable flaring activity.

Catania sunspot group 56 (NOAA AR 1059) situated at S15E40 was the source of the CME first detected by SOHO/LASCO C2 at 03:08 UT on March 30. The angular extent of the CME was around 110 degrees. It was accelerating to reach the speed of around 350 km/s in the LASCO C3 field of view. The CME was not associated with any reported flare. However, coronal dimmings and post-eruption loops were observed by SECCHI/EUVI onboard STEREO B starting from around 03:00 UT. The CME was the driver of the interplanetary shock wave detected on April 2 (see below).

A partial halo CME (angular width around 243 degrees) was detected on April 3. It was first seen at 10:33 UT (by LASCO) and at 09:54 UT (by SECCHI/COR2 onboard STEREO A). The CME was moving at a projected plane-of-the-sky speed of around 500 km/s (according to the LASCO data). The source region of the CME was the Catania sunspot group 56 (NOAA AR 1059) located at that moment around S25W05. The CME was accompanied by a filament disappearance, a post-eruption arcade, coronal dimmings, an EIT wave (as seen by SOHO/EIT) and a B7.4 flare peaking at 09:54 UT.

The arrival of the corresponding ICME (possibly an interplanetary flux rope) at the Earth was expected to occur late on April 5 - early on April 6 (the corresponding CME-driven shock wave actually arrived at 07:59 UT on April 5 according to the SOHO/CELIAS data). The flux rope orientation as inferred from the SOHO/EIT and SOHO/MDI data is ESW, although it may change during propagation. STEREO A and B data indicate that the bulk of the CME was propagating to the south of the ecliptic (according to the COR2 data). If the ICME will arrive, it may produce a major geomagnetic disturbance (peak Dst around -100 nT, peak K index around 6).

Another partial halo CME first observed by LASCO at 08:54 UT on March 29 was backsided according to the STEREO/SECCHI data.

GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY

During the whole week, the Earth was situated inside a slow solar wind flow with average interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude. An interplanetary sector boundary was crossed by ACE on March 29 around noon, but no faster solar wind stream followed.

An interplanetary shock wave was detected by ACE and SOHO/CELIAS at 06:45 UT on April 2. The solar source of this shock is probably the CME detected on March 30 (see above). Due to the position of the erupting active region away from the solar central meridian and non-halo appearance of the CME, the corresponding ICME missed the Earth and only a shock was detected. The IMF magnitude reached 7 nT in the post-shock sheath. However, the IMF north-south component was fluctuating, so the K index reached only 3 (as reported by IZMIRAN and NOAA). Quiet geomagnetic conditions (with isolated intervals of unsettled conditions with K = 4) were thus reported during the whole week.

The shock arrival was not associated with any solar energetic particle event.

This report, keyed as MPDX, consists of a quick 40-minute bandscan just before and after local sundown, performed at Meadowlake Park, Enid, with DX-398 on battery power, and its reel-out antenna running ENE-WSW next to the lake, a pleasant setting and the usual shoreline gooseshit missing; also away from household, neighborhood noise levels, but a T-storm was approaching, so QRT earlier than planned.

** ARGENTINA [and non]. 15820, looking for LTA, LSB program feeder, instead heard hi-speed RTTY, quite an obstacle, April 5 at 0031.

15345.2, R. Nacional, UT Monday April 5 at 0035, tango on bandoneón, then ID as ``Radio Nacional de Santa Fe, y 40 emisoras, pasan a transmitir un sorteo``, fair and clear signal, nothing to het it. Appears that this regional station regularly feeds programs to the national LRA network. I suppose one might try for its own QSL (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRIA. 9820, looking for ORF`s remaining sesquihour to the Americas at 0000-0130, April 5 at 0058: nothing audible. Not on UT Mondays, or maybe missed them during a beamchange? (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 13725, April 5 at 0039, RCI with El Castor Mensajero (``The Messenger Beaver``) mailbag in Spanish, VG signal reciting complete A-10 RCI Spanish schedule, ``en vigor desde hoy 28 de marzo``, so this was a replay of last week`s show! Staff off for Easter holiday weekend? In English, the mailbag is attributed to a maple leaf instead of a beaver; why? (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHILE [and non]. 11900 & 11940, big dirty mushy spurs with plenty of modulation from fundamental 11920 via CVC, April 5 at 0041 with HCJB Portuguese ID in passing. So CVC enters another season having done nothing to fix these, which we have reported repeatedly, and surely are heard all over the Americas and beyond.

6070, CFRX with heavy QRM in Spanish causing fast SAH, April 5 at 0058, // clear 11665 with CVC La Voz ID. Unfortunately, CVC has resumed using 6070 at 23-02 on 30 degree azimuth, so forget about listening to CFRX during those two sesquihours.

All we can do is anticipate the scheduled reduxion to only two hours, 23-01, from October 10 when DST resumes in Chile, a seemingly irrelevant event having nothing to do with Miami. BTW, Manuel Méndez asked CVC and they admitted that the Sunday morning program pretending to come out of Santiago is axually from Miami like everything else (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake, April 5 at 0037: fair on 14970, poor on 15970 (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 6020, April 5 at 0059 CRI in English mixing with music from another station. Another long-term case of frequency mismanagement by those who fail to observe what happens in the real world rather than the computer models. CRI is 305 degrees via Albania to CIRAF zones 7-10, i.e. USA and Mexico, while REE via Costa Rica at 110 degrees to northern S America, so no conflict, right??

Maybe not if REE could keep its nearby signal from going in any other direxion, impossible. Also ignored is the persistent het from 6019.3 Radio Victoria, Perú, bothering them both in respective targets. But serves the ChiCom right for jamming or blocking countless other station-frequencies (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. MW DXers have been reporting ``the wobbler`` active lately on 730 kHz, and now so do I, April 5 at 0106 check, like someone playing a musical saw, obscuring whatever stations are trying to make it on the frequency. The same has appeared previously on many other MW frequencies traced to Cuba, as some kind of transmitter defect, since there appears to be no reason to employ this technique for deliberate jamming. Indeed this looped to the southeast/northwest (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 17705, RHC at 0030 April 5, going from Spanish to open carrier. My bandscan downward continued inexorably so don`t know what eventually followed, but not supposed to be in Spanish before or after this hour. Axually the end of the Quechua broadcast, so about to close down.

13820, April 5 at 0038, lite DCJC noise and pulsing against nothing, long after Radio Martí is finished with frequency.

11600, April 5 at 0043, DCJC pulse jamming against nothing at the absolutely regular rate of two per second.

9810, April 5 at 0046, heavy DCJC noise jamming against nothing on long-abandoned R. República frequency --- wait a minute, there is a trace of some broadcast underneath, which must be V. of Russia, now in A-10 season via GUIANA FRENCH in Spanish to South America at 00-02, per sked in DXLD 10-13.

Commies vs ex-Commies! Cuba jams Russia, whee. At 0200 VOR/GUF switches to 9735 which is a super signal USward; see separate report (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 15180, at 0036 April 5, VOK in Spanish, with a roar on the transmitter; last time heard a few days ago, modulation had been OK (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 6185, April 5 at 0056, heavy mix of two different musical signals about 12 Hz apart, i.e. XEPPM and ZYE365 (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PHILIPPINES. 17820 at 0028 April 5, heavy flutter on poor signal with YDD and VOA sign-on. This is 21 degrees from Tinang, ergo USward, and quite fortunate was I to catch it as only in use for this semi-hour in Spe-cial Eng-lish (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 17525, at 0031 April 5 with ``99 Luft Balloons``, so I bet it`s DW. Uplooked later, yes, DW amid English hour via Komsomolsk/Amure, weak and fluttery (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330-CUSB, UT Monday April 5 at 0048, rock music with SFX such as sirens, // 5110-CUSB almost as good, in another weekend experiment by Area 51 via WBCQ. But 7415 was absent (Glenn Hauser, MPDX, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6985, April 5 at 0055 organ music with hymn, what else but ``Gott sei die Ehre``. WYFR now scheduled here 2245-0445 at 355 degrees. ** ASCENSION. 6100 at 0514 April 5, talk in Luso Portuguese, must be an African morning service, VOA? No, there is none in the morning. At 0523 with English lesson featuring British accents and London locales. BBCWS scheduled 0430-0530 M-F only, at 102 degrees. Off at 0529*

After that, I did hear a weak Yankee Doodle Dandy, I drowsily thought on 6100 too, but must have been 6095 São Tomé about to open VOA M-F French, unless that has shifted (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. RHC normally makes frequency adjustments about a week after other stations enact seasonal changes, since as an outlaw nation, Cuba refuses to participate in advance planning with HFCC countries. And so it has as of April 5:

12030, new frequency found at 1330, ex-11800 and with the same deficient lo-fi modulation, as also on 9660 afternoons, 6120 at night. 12030 is an echo apart from all the remaining parallels checked at 1356: 11760, 11730, 13780, 13880; and 19m was barely propagating, 15360, 15120; and -

RHC 6110 now has Asian co-channel, i.e. ChiCom jamming and VOA Mandarin via Tinang at 1230-1500 (also via Tinian at 1100-1230).

At 1359 Despertar con Cuba was upwrapping, to resume at 7 am = 11 UT, and 1400 frequency announcement alleged in typical disorder: ``15120, 15360, 13760, 13680, 13780, 11760, 11730, 11800, 6110``. So 12030 is unknown to the studio.

I think he said 13760 instead of 13770 where it has really been for months, but not positive as they sound so much alike. In any event, 13770 is also missing, and replacement for that found on new 15380 at 1401, much weaker than // 15360. So 15380 also unknown to the studio.

At 1419 check I suspected 12030 had disappeared but no, still there, very weak. Propagation not favorable today; 1444 back to good strength.

Full span of new 12030 and 15380 yet to be determined, but 12030 is also in use by V. of Russia and perhaps IBB Sri Lanka. 15380 has Saudi Arabia until 1400, then VOA via Wertachtal to Afghanistan from 1430.

Another check at 1700 just as Enid was testing its storm-warning sirens, found 15380 and 12030 still on, along with 11690, 11730, 11760, and JBA carrier on 6110, nothing on 13 MHz. So it`s pretty clear that 12030 replaces 11800 and 15380 replaces 13770 for all-day service and perhaps beyond.

After all that, I check RHC website and to my astonishment the schedule presented in Spanish has already been updated:

Yet to be verified as 100% accurate, but some changes of note:
15380 runs 11-12 and 00-05 to Buenos Aires.
12030 runs 11-24 to Central America.

Also new in Spanish: 12020 // 9525 both 2300-0500 to South America.
5040 now starting Spanish earlier at 21-23, as well as 02-11, after the break for English, French and Creole (tho some have heard English sporadically after 0200 or 0700).

5970 is new too, shown as 01-05 in English to NAm // 6000; 07-11 in Spanish to Chicago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. Wondering if Shiokaze will have made another frequency shift with the new season, so April 5 at 1415 I tried to hear it on 5915 or 5985 --- inconclusive, as only an extremely weak carrier on the former, nothing on the latter, despite some other weak Asian signals on band, and RA good on 5995. No doubt Ron Howard will notice if JSR QSYs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6010, Radio Mil, holding up as late as 1417 April 5, weak signal but in the clear with news of Banco de México (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS ANTILLES. 6250, quite readable R. Japón in Spanish, April 5 at 0512 vs ute bursts near frequency. This leapfrog has appeared in A-10 since new frequency via Bonaire 6080 has started for the 0500-0530 broadcast, mixing with RN in Dutch on 6165 to land another 85 kHz higher. In the B-season, same mix was between 6165 in Dutch and 6195 in Spanish appearing as Dutch on 6225.

List-loggers, beware of assuming Spanish on 6250 during this semihour be Equatorial Guinea! But that usually does not start until after 0530, when active, which it has not been for some weeks (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 6170, RNZI, clear of VOR QRM, in nicely for good copy of new Mailbox from 1329 Monday April 5, lots of DX news and clips from Bryan Clark, who said he would not be back until June. Still sufficient signal at 1413 check with jazz singer (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENINGN DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 9735, La Voz de Rusia, 0458 April 5, huge signal closing transmission with Spanish schedule mentioning meterbands only. This is 500 kW, 320 degrees from GUIANA FRENCH for Caribbean, Mexico, AND the conterminous USA, CIRAF Zones 6-8.

Meanwhile, the poor English-speakers in North America must now struggle to hear VOR only on weak and unreliable signals direct from Asia or Europe. We know when we are not wanted as listeners (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH AFRICA. 7310, BBCWS in English with Network Africa, fairly good April 5 until cut off abruptly at 0551, back on at 0553 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake April 4: only found on 8400 at 1333, and poor with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13680, RHC big carrier with hum, but just barely modulated // 13780 and 13770, April 4 at 1343.

On the modulated frequencies, then I noticed that programming unseemed En Contacto, the DX program supposed to be at 1335-1350 Sundays on all frequencies. Instead it was marxist propaganda, which turned out to be special coverage of the Noveno Congreso de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas, UJC, 3-4 abril en La Habana.

Finally at 1350 started En Contacto theme and initial weekly birthday greetings including to Jorge García Rangel en Venezuela, who will be 42 on April 7. This 15-minute program was cut off at 1400 for news on 13780, so it was fortunate to get even 10 minutes instead of En Compañía del Doctor, medical program. Maybe the repeats later Sunday, UT Monday will manage the full quarter-hour? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ETHIOPIA. I was not expecting to hear long-path from the Horn of Africa this late in season, but there it was April 4 at 1332 on 7165, HOA music tnx supranormal conditions. Aoki shows R. Ethiopia in Afar during this hour, and Eritrea not on frequency until later. Also noise jamming on 7175, and weaker music from R. Ethiopia on 7110, vs CW from a K4 ham. At 1402 there was talk on 7165, no more jamming heard on 7175; music audible on 7110, and similar music on 9704 without any het from 9705 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. Grayline conditions on 60 meters were much improved April 4 well after local sunrise 1213 UT here, only problem being our high local noise level. First noticed on 5010 with news in English at 1232-1235, some of it about India, 1235 into another language, i.e., from AIR Thiruvananthapuram, tho Aoki does not mention this English segment, just 1530-1545.

Several other intriguing carriers, some with audio, such as 4760, 4800, but the only other signal comparable to 5010 was 4920, at 1238 M&W discussion in S Asian language, and that carrier still audible at 1328, i.e. AIR Chennai (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 4750, RRI Makassar, good signal in Indonesian well atop the co-channel from China and/or Bangladesh, April 4 at 1237 and still audible an hour later.

Among a number of 60m signals, there was music a shade below 4870 at 1238 and 1245, which fits only for RRI Wamena, as measured by others, and on 4870 in Aoki but hard to believe the listing of only 300 watts. This station is completely missing from WRTH 2010. Ishida confirms it has been active in late March, but doesn`t split the frequencies nor speculate on power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 9526-, VOI is achieving some decent modulation at the moment, so enjoy it while it last during English hour at 1300, which also lux out with nothing on 9525 to het it, nor even anything significant on 9520 or 9530.

April 4 at 1312 after news, report on an eye hospital; 1318 Today in History about NATO (pronounced natto), independence of Senegal and Bhutto hanged in Pakistan. 1323 a talk about police corruption in Indonesia; then Indonesian Wonders accompanied by gamelan music; 1332 Miscellany, about Indonesia being named to a high-level UN group of 19 countries in UK dealing with climate change. After 1400, VOI gone, ceding channel to CRI Russian 9525, but the day before they were hetclashing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. NHKWNRJ via CANADA, 6120, Sunday April 4 at 1228 reveals that World Interactive still exists and is still on Sundays in the new fiscal year, as she was upwrapping, cut off transmission at 1229*. As Joe Hanlon points out, NHK is now running a full 30 minutes, so the operators need to prolong the relays one more minute. Signal only fair here, over full-daylight path, and will only get worse into summer. Meanwhile NHK Radio Japan deprives us of the former loud and clear repeat at 1400 via Sackville on 11705. Checking that, not even audible on remaining transmitter direct from Yamata (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR [non]. Tried again for R. Mada International Sunday April 4 after 1530, hiding under usual good signal from V. of Greece on 15630: maybe a trace of something there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. No one minding the store at KOKB 1580 Blackwell. That`s what you get from abandoning your heritage as a real local radio station, KLTR, to become nothing but a repeater of KOKP 1020 Perry (or a Stillwater FM station). Once again April 3 at 1935 UT open carrier on 1580 with zero modulation, and still the case at 2035 recheck, while 1020 was OK thruout (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. From a quiet location in west Enid, (the Walmart parking lot), a bandscan on caradio, see also USA, at 1937 UT April 3 found weak signals on 1450, and a SAH of 160/minute, plus hum; seems one is with a game and the other with talk, also maybe a low audible het.

The only groundwave-range stations here are Woodward, Shawnee, Altus OK and Hutchinson KS. KSIW Woodward is surely one of them. KGFF Shawnee likely the other by proximity except has nostalgia format per NRC AM Log 2009 while KWBW Hutchinson is newstalk. Too bad there is no reference to look up which two stations are exactly 2.67 Hz apart (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [and non]. 5920, R. Rossii, Petropavlovsk/Kamchatsky, horrible motor-boating noise self-imposed, April 4 at 1249 with talk in Russian and music. Just for kix, I monitored around hourtop to see if 8GAL CW marker would accompany it, as it does in the winter when same defective Russian transmitter is on 6075 until 1400. No.

But RR timesignal was as usual 5 seconds late compared to WWV, and then to open carrier but still motorboating which lasted until 1303:20*. It was a stark contrast to clear Chennai on 4920, as I flipped down 1 MHz at 1302. Meanwhile, some very weak music was audible on 5920 but nothing listed in Aoki. FCC A-10 schedule shows WHRI here at 23-13, but of course not really for anywhere near that entire span (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non?]. Checked 15760 for the widely publicized on short notice special April 4 at 15-16, ``UK Rocks the World`` -- at 1530 very good signal with rock music, but what`s the point? We don`t have enough rock music already, especially in America? Site? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. From a quiet location in west Enid, (the Walmart parking lot), a bandscan on caradio April 3, see also OKLAHOMA, found some intriguing subaudible heterodynes from normally open frequencies, thus bearing some very weak groundwave signals. (Skywave not a factor well past equinox and barely an hour past local mean noon.)

830, at 1948 UT, SAH of about 6 Hz. All the possibilities are long shots from here led by WCCO; also Wyoming, Missouri, NM/Texas, Tucson, even Coahuila. So which pair are 6 Hz apart??

840, at 1937, SAH of 144/minute. KTIC West Point NE is sometimes audible by itself at the limits of groundwave, so has to be one of them. Otherwise there is a station in the RGV, another in Louisiana, or maybe a remnant of WHAS. So which pair are 2.4 Hz apart?

1040, at 1944 UT, a slow SAH of 26/minute. Three possibilities are 50 kW WHO Des Moines, 3.3 kW KGGR Dallas, and 15 kW KCBR Monument CO (Colorado Springs). The first two are relatively common here, but KCBR [which inherited the call from VOA Delano] would be a neat daytime catch this far away. So which pair are 0.43 Hz apart?

Caveat: could be misled by local mixing products, but doubt it, since have never identified our only three local signals, 960, 1390 and 1640 on such other MW frequencies, altho 960 and 1390 do show up on shortwave harmonix and other mixes.

1130, another station whose store is not being minded, KLEY, Wellington KS, open carrier/dead air at 1944 April 3; back on at next check around 2005. It`s dual a 1550 station, not sure if same affected it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) cf OKLAHOMA 1580

** U S A. If you hear gospel-huxters on 5920, don`t assume WBOH is back. That station is kaput, so WHRI has moved onto the frequency. I noticed it one evening. This could also be the frequency for DXing with Cumbre, since searching on Marie Lamb as program host in the online WHR schedule brings it up repeatedly, attributed to Angels 1, 5 and 6, even two of them at once! Presumably most if not all of these are imaginary, maybe on the webcasts but not really on the SW air.

** U S A [non]. 7575, VOA Sunday at 1330 April 4, good signal 21 degrees USward from Tinang, PHILIPPINES (only on weekends) amid Jazz America giving contact info, and responding to a listener in Yukon OK, but he`s from abroad so that`s OK. Does he listen to this frequency too? Wondered if there was an archive of previous JA programs; no, you can only listen to the latest one online (if you can find it on confusing disorganized VOA website). At 1339 tried // 9760 but it had ChiCom co-channel QRM.

5835 at 1359 April 4, good open carrier, 1400 Radio Free Asia theme joined in progress and English announcement that Cantonese would follow. This is via TINIAN, kudos to be doing so well, so late almost two hours after sunrise, so far off-target; no jamming audible and presumably not jammed, since who cares if those southerners are further corrupted by outside influences? ** CUBA. Radio Habana keeps us going with more and more anomalies: April 3 at 0615 I notice that English is still running on 6000, normally quitting at 0500, and also English on 6010, 6060 and 6140. Spanish on 6120 and 5040; nothing on 6150. 6000 also has a het on the hi side, but less interference than 6010 which is atop MEXICO [q.v.] and probably Colombia. However a minute or two later, RHC English no longer heard on 6000, tho there is still the het between somethings (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA [and non]. 4750, not much making it on 60 meters as late as 1310 April 3 except this heavy collision between RRI Makassar and CNR which is listed as 50 kW due west from Xining, CHINA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** LAOS [non]. 11785, WHRI with Hmong World Christian Radio, Saturday April 3 at 1313, but sermon instead of the rustic music we crave. WHRI signal is not at usual super-level, but instead suffering severe co-channel QRM from the VOA/ChiCom radio war, mainly CNR1 echo-jamming. It has really been foolish ever to schedule these on same frequency. At 1315 the HWCR audio builds up temporarily and I can tell it is very jumpy, badly edited or with computer problems; 1317 a bit of English included, ``the devil shall die``, but back to heavy collision at 1323, and finally at 1328 some Hmong hmusic fill, 1330 over to Call to Worship show in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR [non]. Another try to hear Radio Mada International, Saturday April 3, via PRIDNESTROVYE. Could not tune in until 1545, but then heard nothing but Greece on 15630, which had a stronger signal than neighbors: 15640-DRM, 15650-Lampertheim, 15660-Meyerton, 15670-Wertachtal. Yet WRN confirms R. Mada was really on 15630, and they have not complained about any Grecian interference in target. Saturdays and Sundays 1530-1600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6010, checking RHC`s ever-changing language/frequency lineup, see CUBA, April 3 at 0618 could detect Mexican national anthem, underneath from Radio Mil, way past the legally required 0600 = local midnight time. Anyway, once DST is underway from April 4, it`s supposed to play at 0500 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 11835, Radio Netherlands poorly audible in English news at 1405 April 3, under skirts of much stronger WYFR 11830. The only frequencies left in A-10 for this 14-16 English broadcast to South Asia are this and 15745, both via MADAGASCAR, the latter inaudible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DGIEST)

** PORTUGAL. 15560, RDPI, Saturday April 3 at 1358, VG signal with funny novelty song to the tune of ``Reveille`` running past 1400, then weather for Açores and Madeira, news in joint service from Antena Um e RDPI. ** SPAIN [non]. REE`s Spanish DX program Amigos de la Onda Corta has not made a one-hour-earlier DST change this A-season, but still at 0605 UT Saturdays as in B-season, followed by Correo del Oyente mailbag at 0630. Now we can only get it on 5965 via COSTA RICA, unless Spain direct propagate on 11895, 12035 aimed eastward, not tonight.

Fortunately, the Vaticollision on 5965 was not a problem altho supposedly still on the air at this hour in A-season, due to poor propagation from Europe and/or earlier sunrise fading it out.

Amigos had host Antonio Buitrago with some DX news at 0613. The only other scheduled broadcast of it is Sunday 1230 on numerous frequencies, 21610 21570 21540 15585 15170-CR 13720 11910-China 11815-CR 9765-CR, so it no longer competes as it did thruout B-09 season with RHC`s Spanish DX program at 1335. But there is NO other airing of the mailbag on the REE A-10 grid (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 9575, HSK9 R. Thailand in English via Udorn at 132 degrees, weak but clear, April 3 at 1410 with CRI and R. Australia out of the way from adjacents (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. Checking whether VOT has really shifted its programming so a new day starts on the 22 UT broadcast the day before, it and the 03 UT repeat carrying the new day rather than the previous day`s programs, as Seref Isler claimed on last week`s DX Corner:

NO: UT Sat April 3 on live webcast, but also on 5975 if that had been more convenient to monitor, at 0312 I heard ``Turkish Album``, a talk about the disappearing art of inlaying mother-of-pearl, with some music breaks but that`s not what Album refers to; at 0331 ``Household Environmentalist``, Seref with greenish tips. These are both `Friday` programs, as per the current printed schedule folder (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UGANDA [non]. A reminder that the new Ugandan clandestine Radio Y'Abaganda (Ababaka), is imminent for weekly broadcast Sat 1700-1800 via France 15410. Details in latest DXLD 10-13. Should be audible in North America tho propagation is not so hot today. Of particular

Pop/jazz music ran a bit past 1659 from previous 15410 occupant, DW English scheduled via Rampisham. Then much weaker signal at 1700, really too weak and I am not even sure it was modulated. Carrier break for less than a minute at 1702, and afterwards still can`t copy anything. Should be better further east. Next check at 1740, signal no better than before, very weak and fadey, but definitely modulated now with spirited discussion in presumed Luganda (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 9585, something in Burmese discussion, April 3 at 1411 and stronger than Thailand on 9575. It`s BBC via Singapore at 1345-1430. Strangely enough, NHKWNRJ is scheduled during exactly the same half-sesquihour in Hindi via Uzbekistan, so there ought to be a big collision in Asia, but only Burmese heard here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO confirmed back on 15825 for the rest of the midyear, Fridays on WWCR, weak at 2050; must have started at 2029 or even 2028, as by 2057 was already over and filling time with promos such as for DGS via Anguilla 11775.

5890 // 5935, WWCR 4 and 2 now both carrying University Network, April 3 at 0611. This would seem to be overkill by Dead Gene Scott, but confirmed in new online pdf program schedules at 05-11 on 5890 and 00-12 on 5935.

** U S A [non]. 7575, VOA in Press Conference USA, Saturday April 3 at 1245, guest Jeremy Rifkin, author of ``The Empathic Civilization``, about what the future may hold and the necessity for more worldwide empathy to avoid doom.

Seemed undermodulated, but every so often the audio would surge up, so what was really happening: surges heard when an open carrier atop this signal would briefly fade. Finished by 1256, then jazz music and promo for Jazz America in following hour to be on 7.575, 9.51 and 9.76 MHz.

At 1300 VOA switches 7575 from THAILAND to Tinang, PHILIPPINES site (the latter only on weekends), so Tinang was on the air with OC much earlier than 1300; should have been tuning up on some other frequency as IBB frequently does but not in this case.

Furthermore, after Thailand went off, the OC remained on 7575 until VOA news modulation finally cut on at 1301:25, at better level than before and no more surging since the undersignal offwent.

9945, April 3 at 1407 playing new version of ``We Are the World``. This hour is VOA Indonesian via Tinang, but the A-Z schedule fails to color-code it as Fri-Sat-Sun only, and consequently also the VOA schedule in DXLD 10-13 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9660, sounds like DRM noise, April 3 at 1349, mixing with an AM signal. Maybe the DRM is Brandon, AUSTRALIA, which in the past has had DRM on 9660, but not on current schedules at this or any times unlike its other frequency 5995. The AM is probably CVC in Hindi via UZBEKISTAN (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15106, the het is there again, April 3 at 1403 vs 15105, presumed BBC Hausa via Ascension. Noel Green says it`s not Pakistan, so still a mystery; possibly a spur from some other 19m frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** CHINA [and non]. 9355 // 9905 in Chinese, fair signals at 1906 April 2. RFA is scheduled via Saipan and Palau, respectively; only heard one signal on each, so either it was RFA without any jamming audible, or jamming without any RFA audible, but if China, it was plain programming, not echofeed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. The 2030 English broadcast of RHC was missing a few days ago as I checked several times during that hour on 11760 and other frequencies, but she was back April 2 at 2037 talking about journalists being ambushed in Honduras.

15330 has mostly been free of DentroCuban Jamming Command since a day after the A-season began, but April 1 at 1801 noticed irregular pulses against nothing. Probably only one of the panoply of jamming transmitters screwed up (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) More about Martí under U S A

** EQUATORIAL GUINEA [and non]. 15190, not a doubt that it`s Radio Africa, April 2 at 2114 open carrier plus hum (and also think I noticed it around 2100 or earlier). Kept tuned this time and real modulation did not start until some soft hymn singing at 2126, gradually loudening.

Next check at 2208, disgraced child-sex evangelist Tony Alamo was to be heard, but without any co-channel from WYFR Portuguese, which supposedly starts at 2200 in A-10. WYFR Spanish on 15130 not as strong as usual, but surely there would be some trace of it on 15190 if on the air. 2226 check, WYFR is finally on, atop Alamo. This transmitter seems to be especially erratic. BTW, the Brazilian who thought he had R. Inconfidência reactivated on 15190 agrees it was probably WYFR instead, scheduled until 0045 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** FRANCE [non]. I`ll bet you didn`t know that RFI has a Brazilian service. It`s not in the WRTH 2010 or February update, tho they have had a Portuguese service to Africa. April 2 at 2045 I am hearing RFI on 21690 via GUIANA FRENCH with a Brazilian accent, at 2059 music break, 2100 into Spanish. The 2100 Spanish broadcast in B-09 was supposedly only on 17630.

Unknown whether the Brazilian service is daily or what time it starts. To further confuse matters, 21690 is supposedly only in French intended for Africa, not Latin America, aimed 75 degrees at 17-22 UT. Maybe another program feed screwup at Montsinéry.

claims that Brazilians and all Americans must listen only via satellite; the only SW frequencies in Portuguese are for Africa at other times. ** JAPAN [non]. Correxion: My earlier report was really R. Japan in Spanish via Bonaire: ``6080, new frequency for RN 0500 in Spanish via Bonaire, March 28 until 0530* with mailbag in last few minutes. Very big signal at 290 degrees for Mexico and Caribbean, Until uncovered at 0530, totally blocking VOA English via São Tomé from 0500 to 0700`` (Glenn Hauser, April 2, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1580, KOKB Blackwell, not off the air, just not modulating, April 2 at 2033 UT. // 1020 KOKP Perry was modulating sportstalk normally. First noted 1580 silent in the car several minutes earlier, and could not be sure whether there was a silent carrier or not (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. See SPAIN [and non]

** SPAIN [and non]. We keep finding REE in frequency conflicts, which leads us to believe there is something deficient in their shortwave frequency planning and management, tho certainly not 100% their fault.

12015, April 2 at 1858 a US Government editorial in English on VOA, about Nigeria, well over the always-running radioteletype, and mixing with REE IS underneath. Then VOA into sign-off routine, 1900 timesignal and REE opening Arabic, M-F only, but it`s underneath the RTTY here.

9690, April 2 at 2039, about equal levels between a station in French and one in English. French was talking about homophobie, not // RFI on 21690. At 2047 the other one played some Romanian folk music, soon accompanied by RRI ID. At 2056 the RRI IS was mixing with REE giving its address in French and then its own IS until 2057* while RRI was on a bit longer and briefly in the clear.

How could two European transmitters of 250 and 300 kW be on the same frequency at the same time? Perhaps because RRI`s 2030 English broadcast at 307 degrees is supposedly targeted at eastern North America only, a rather early hour for that, and of course, also perfectly targeted and much better timed for UK.

Spain is aiming 110 degrees for north and central Africa, Mideast, so they couldn`t possibly overlap, right? Directly off the back from Noblejas is 290 degrees, USward. At least the latter is M-F only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12015, VOA Greenville now here at 17-19, English to Africa concluding at 1858 April 2 with USG editorial about Nigeria, very good signal but with constant RTTY QRM, which has been on that frequency for years: so why do broadcasters keep going onto it and why doesn`t the RTTY object, whatever it is? See also SPAIN [and non] which overlaps before 1900 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15550-USB, WJHR active April 1 at 1802 with same old preacher; peaks at S9+15 when he screams ``hell, no``, presumably denying the existence of the hot place. Not audible 24-26 hours later (Glenn Hauser, OK, April 2, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WWCR`s April program schedule shows that transmitter 4 is no longer 24/7 Pastor Pete Peters, no doubt due to all his new airtime on WTWW. This opens up lots of time for other stuff on 9980 or 5890, including two additional airings of WORLD OF RADIO: Sunday 2330 on 9980, UT Monday 0330 on 5890. Tnx to Thomas Nyberg for pointing this out first, and tnx to WWCR!

Also, #2 has shifted from 9345 to 9350 at 21-24. Confirmed April 2 at 2212, usual VG signal, during preacher. Golden Age of Radio is filling time on 9350: Wed 2300-2400; Sat 2105-2200; and Into the Blue, Sat 2200-2300. GAOR is also occupying at least seven other hours per week at various times and frequencies, and ITB, three (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WTWW remains on 9479 instead of 9480 when checked, April 2: at 1312, not up to full strength yet, has a 1 kHz het from something on 9480 and a 4 kHz het from R. Australia on 9475. At 1903 when CRI via Albania is on 9480, only a trace of its het could be detected here. After 2200, no hets audible unlike the day before (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. I hesitate to mention this without the proper spin, so: Harold Camping is desperately trying to add more and more languages to infest more and more cultures with his end-of-the-world nonsense as there are only 13 months to go. Tuning across WYFR 11865, April 2 at 1343, in English they were asking for people who speak Oromo, Shona, Somali, Zulu and an Nguni (? Niugini?) language.

7520, April 2 at 2215, WYFR in Spanish during this hour, had stronger CW QRM from 7519. From the cadence if not axual copying, I am pretty sure these were Cuban spy cut numbers; not the first time these two disservices have fought over a frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Radio Martí violates separation of church and state once again: On 13820, April 2 at 1856 noticed a mass in progress, as if it were WEWN! Pretty good cantor, shortly identified by announcer as St. John`s Passion. Hardly any jamming audible here, but heavy jamming on // 11930. Not only that but the next time I noticed R. Martí, at 2220 on 6030 sounded like more of the same, mass with bits of German, Latin, Spanish, Italian mixed up.

No doubt these are Good Friday specials, but what are US taxpayers doing paying for a government station to broadcast services of one particular religion to one particular country? O sure, DentroCubans are in dire need of Catholic radio, despite the Church having reached an accommodation with the Cuban state years ago, and big 24-hour unjammed Spanish signals from Birmingham. Even if there were no such deal, this would be totally against American principles. Stop it! Or start broadcasting ALL OTHER RELIGIONS (and ATHEISM) to Cuba on R. Martí (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15730, something strange is happening: April 1 at 1804 I hear an AM open carrier, and then it suddenly changes to DRM, and it has ragged edges, extending well beyond the ``only-10-kHz`` bandwidth that DRM proponents claim, out to 15720 and 15740. This bothers a weak VOA Portuguese AM signal on 15740, which is via MADAGASCAR. Then the DRM cuts on and off at 1809.

Checked again April 2: at 1850 the DRM centered on 15730 is ragged again, extending at least 15715-15745. After 1900, at 1908 it`s accompanied by TDP DRM via Bonaire at 15750-15760, i.e. almost continuous noise from 15715 to 15760.

What`s this on 15730? Not a single mention of that frequency on the drmna yg or the DRM RX fora. Once again I hear DRM without a DRM receiver, while those with DRM receivers do not tune around enough to find something like this and identify it.

Possibly it could be the Bonaire transmitter maladjusted, but note that I have heard it both with and without the nominal Bonaire frequency 15755. Bulgaria has also registered a bunch of DRM frequencies around here, but supposedly not scheduled here and now nor is it on http://www.drm.org/for-listeners/live-broadcast-schedule/

LRA36 Antarctica back on new sked

Mail from LRA-36 says they resumed broadcasts this year 15 March, on a new schedule 9-12 Argentine time = 12-15 UT, only on M/W/F. Presumably on same frequency as always, 15476. (gh`s translation)

Fortunately nothing at all is currently scheduled on 15475, but there should be considerable adjacent interference on one side or the other. Glenn

** AUSTRALIA. HCJB coming in quite well April 1 on both 19m frequencies: 15340 at 1328 in S Asian language, atop 15341 Morocco het; 1329 announcer kept mixing in English phrases such as ``brand new program``, ``host with the most``, ``thanks for all the e-mails``, ``so without wasting any more time, let`s get on with the show``, and played hymn ``What a Friend We Have in Jesus``.

shows it`s supposed to transition at 1330 from Bhojpuri on Thursdays to Hindi daily. By 1402, the het from Morocco is much worse, with its undermodulated Arabic.

15400 Chinese service at 1328 had an English ID, back to Chinese.

If these are coming long-path, the route is across the Indian Ocean, over Cape Town, up the Atlantic skirting the NE coast of Brasil, entering N America between Savannah and Jacksonville. If short-path, across Midway Island, north of Berkeley (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** DJIBOUTI [non]. 15165, checking whether clandestine La Voix de Djibouti remains on B-09 frequency in A-10, Thursdays only – yes, April 1 carrier on a few seconds before 1530 and modulation a few sex after with instrumental anthem, 1531 HOA song, 1532 into talk unseeming French. Poor signal compared to the last time I heard it a few weeks ago, and traces of long-path echo. Recheck at 1615, even weaker and more echoey, with much greater ACI from BBC Russian 15170. Could not tell if it had switched to French by now like last time.

I still think a W European site is likely rather than South Africa as hypothesized by Wendel Craighead, who among others has got an e-QSL never revealing the true site. The echo would be more likely if we are getting back- and front-beams from Europe rather than South Africa which would aim in a very different direxion, roughly sideways from us, but this is all very hypothetical (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 9526-, VOI English, April 1 at 1337 with fair modulation, accented YL talking about science and technology, with music background; no adjacent-channel QRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. RRI putting in several good to very good signals on 19m, none of them designated for NAm, April 1:

15195, at 1349 with pop music. This is Galbeni, 285 degrees to Europe at 12-14 in Romanian.

15140, at 1355 in Russian but giveaway Romanian folk music, mentioned Brasov. Tiganeshti at 52 degrees, 1330-1400 only, so off in time for Oman in English, inaudible as usual.

15160, at 1357 with RRI IS, briefly // 15140 until latter 1358*. Then 15160 at 1400 opening in Romanian-accented Arabic, ID ``Sawt al-Romania``, mentioning all the satellites, WRN, and also heard on // 15490. 15160 is 245 degrees from Galbeni at 14-15, while 15490 is 142 degrees from Tiganeshti.

What about English? There isn`t any from RRI, anywhere between 12 and 17 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN [non]. The co-channel QRM to REE via COSTA RICA, 15170, is no longer Romania, but BBC Russian, scheduled 1300-1730 via Woofferton. The latter was atop REE at 1349 April 1 discussing Poland and imposing a SAH of 3 Hz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. I listened to the final Live from Turkey, Tuesday edition on 1-day-on-demand webcast. Seref Isler seemed to be saying goodbye, as apparently others will be doing the remaining Thursday edition. This is due to the current staffing situation, as Voice of Turkey needs an extra person on duty for that program, and there are higher priorities, such as doing a daily newscast in English which is loaded on Turkish airlines. He also said that because of this he did not have time to do a new Letterbox program for this Wednesday`s broadcasts, so would repeat one from 3(?) weeks ago.

I then listened to the SW broadcast on 9830, Wednesday March 31 at 2227, and it indeed sounded like an old Letterbox, until music at 2338. The trouble is, on DX Corner a few days before, he also said that feature programs on the 2200 UT broadcast would now be for the next UT day, since 2200 is after local midnight (and also the 0300 broadcast, instead of being the last repeat of the previous UT day). That should have put Letterbox on the 2200 UT Tuesday transmission, instead of Wednesday. Maybe this does not kick in until next week, or are they still confused or trying to decide what to do?

During this period, 9830 had some strange fading and noises, but did not sound like the usual RTTY interference.

13635, April 1 at 1248, good with Turkish music, a sad-sounding song. On his last LFT, Seref remarked that he could not think of any Turkish songs which were happy ones; sad songs, such as one he played about a jilted lover, are the norm. 13635 cut off at 1259 after a brief Turkish announcement. It`s scheduled 06-13, 500 kW, 310 degrees from Emirler to western Europe but also USward.

Meanwhile, 15450 in English was somewhat weaker, during the remaining Live from Turkey show on Thursdays, not hosted by Seref. The other guy was reading poetry (Turkish translated to English, I assume) at 1320 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 9479 is the frequency where WTWW has shifted its daytime frequency 9480 as of March 31, at least temporarily.

George McClintock tells me the FCC has OK`d it. The reason is an unexpected interference problem very near the transmitter site. The school system of Smith County has a remote receiver on a mountaintop which happens to use 151.680 MHz, and the sixteenth [!] harmonic of WTWW from 9.480 has been interfering with their communication to school buses, altho it is not a serious safety issue. He has been trying to deal with this for two weeks, which may account for a lot of time off the air from 9480.

WTWW`s harmonic is properly more than 80 dB suppressed, but in this circumstance it is not enough. Until a new more powerful and extremely expensive harmonic filter to 90 dB can be obtained and installed, by shifting to 9.479, WTWW moves the harmonic far enough off, to 151.664 MHz.

Unfortunately, altho the local problem has been solved, WTWW now faces heterodynes from stations still on 9480, such as CRI via Albania at 1800-2000 in French, which must be a co-channel QRM problem anyway in eastern North America and Europe. How did that get past HFCC?

WTWW is so strong here, that CRI was no problem when we checked before 2000, tho it made a big het on George`s receiver a few miles away in the skip zone. Voice of Russia might also be using 9480 after that time, and China at other times. Of course, WTWW could seek a completely different frequency, but he hates to give up 9480 which had been inherited from KAIJ and properly coördinated.

Also, Radio Netherlands via Philippines in Indonesian at 22-23 on 9475 made a noticeable 4-kHz het with WTWW, both here and in the Tennessee skip zone. George says he could also shift to 9481 if that would be more advantageous. Casual listeners tuning to 9480 may not even notice the change. WTWW was still on 9479 at 1331 check April 1, no foolin`, making R. Australia 9475 that much more difficult.

Meanwhile, Pastor Pete Peters continues to be the only programming on WTWW. George says he has been inundated with hundreds of postal reception reports to an address on FCC records, even tho he has not solicited them. Many of them enclose $1 return postage. He does not have the time or staff to deal with them all. However, a new QSL card is on the way to the printer.

Many of the reports come from Japan. George theorizes that Peters` message of racial purity appeals to the Asians, even tho PPP is from a white-Christian perspective. I question whether many Japanese DXers really appreciate what PPP is saying in English; rather just are after a QSL from a new station. Also the mail from Europe has been ``staggering``. Of course, PPP surely appeals to neo-Nazis and cowboy fans as well (gh`s comment). (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11550, large S9+25 open carrier at 1335 April 1; must be WEWN, but where`s the Spanish modulation? Other frequency 12050 is running normally. Then at 1337, 11550 with WEWN ID, and joining same programming in progress (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17585, which bore a very strong VOA English via Greenville a few days before, had only a very weak unID signal at 1406 April 1. Nothing else scheduled, so presumably still VOA, maybe not Greenville if they have switched site already; or just not propagating (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15106, weak het against 15105, BBC Hausa via Ascension, April 1 at 1354 and still at 1359. Most likely 15105 station to be off-frequency is PBC Pakistan, scheduled from 1330 in Urdu (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Transradio installs 600 kW DRM compatible MW txer in Qatar

A 600 kW DRM compatible MW transmitter was installed on 15th March 2010 at Al-Arish, Qatar by the state broadcasting company. The overall project included the installation of two TRAM 300 AM transmitters, one Paralleling Unit (PU), two digital DRM Exciter DMOD2, and an antenna for medium wave frequency 675 kHz. Antenna design & construction was by Thomson Broadcast & Multimedia GmbH & was developed in collaboration between Thomson & Transradio. The transmissions will begin in the next few days. With this transmitter, an older station near the Qatari capital of Doha will be replaced.

Russian government approves expediency of introducing DRM in Russia

The Russian government has approved the expediency of introducing the European digital radio system, DRM, in Russia and will draw up national standards for it within two years to come. The Voice of Russia has been broadcasting to Europe in the DRM format since April 2003. The DRM is used by the BBC, Deutsche Welle and Radio France International.

Youtube e il Pesce D'aprile 2010: La modalità testo

Sono passati solo 15 minuti dal  1 Aprile 2010 in Italia quando su youtube è già presente il pesce d'aprile, molto divertente devo dire, oltre alle normali modalità video (360,480,HD ecc) è comparsa la fantomatica modalità TEXT che visualizza il video usando solo caratteri ASCII e come ci indica il messaggio di youtube: "fa risparmiare 1 dollaro al  secondo di banda larga!" Buon pesce d'aprile da youtube e Bclnews!
