CONVERTITORE DRM2

        Sul bollettino di gennaio 2007 è stato pubblicato il primo circuito di convertitore per Digital Radio Mondiale che utilizza un solo transistor. Per tutti gli approfondimenti tecnici che riguardano la tecnica di ricezione della DRM vi rimando al citato articolo oppure alla visita del sito WWW.BCLNEWS.IT.

        Ci occupiamo ancora di un convertitore DRM (che chiameremo DRM2) analizzando, questa volta, un circuito che impiega un integrato forse poco conosciuto ma dai pregi rilevanti. Infatti esso possiede, contrariamente al più noto NE612 o NE602 che dir si voglia, al suo interno, un amplificatore di alta frequenza per cui si presta a lavorare in presenza di segnali piuttosto deboli. Nel caso di segnali di medie frequenze “ anemiche “ questo circuito è un autentico toccasana; inoltre esso potrebbe essere una valida alternativa al già citato integrato NE612, a detta di qualcuno, poco reperibile.

        Il principio di funzionamento del circuito è sempre lo stesso: il segnale a media frequenza proveniente dall’apparecchio ricevente (nel caso specifico a 455 kHz) viene mescolato con un altro generato localmente dal circuito attorno a T2. Questa è una delle differenze sostanziali tra DRM1 e DRM2 dove, per quest’ultimo, l’oscillatore locale viene configurato utilizzando il circuito interno dell’integrato.

        Al piedino 6 è disponibile un segnale a 12 kHz che viene indirizzato verso l’entrata della scheda audio del computer. 

        Prestare attenzione all’inserzione dell’integrato tenendo d’occhio la piedinatura della figura allegata. Si consiglia l’uso di uno zoccolo per inserire l’integrato sullo stampato e, a questo scopo, giova una striscia di connettori pin a saldare (vedere foto).

        Per la messa a punto attenersi a quanto scritto per il primo circuito. Al punto del circuito elettrico contrassegnato da TP si potrà misurare la frequenza dell’oscillatore locale che, nel caso di valore di MF di 455, dovrebbe essere di 467 kHz. Infatti 467- 455 = 12 kHz. 

        Se non si possiede un frequenzimetro si potrà iniettare direttamente il segnale nel bocchettone d’antenna del ricevitore sintonizzato su 467 kHz interponendo, tra il punto TP e l’entrata dell’RX un condensatore da 100 nF. Per eventuali aggiustamenti ruotare lentamente il nucleo di T2.

        Se il vostro ricevitore ha un valore di MF di 9 o 10,7 MHz si potrà far oscillare il circuito su queste frequenze impiegando, come T2, un trasformatore di MF con nucleo di colore arancione.

        Con il software attivo in modalità AM (analog) regolare, lentamente, i due potenziometri P1 e P2 fino ad ottenere un tracciato d’onda con un’ampiezza INPUT PSD moderata (2/3 dell’altezza) e dalla forma simile a quella illustrata nella figura 3 (vedere articolo DRM1).

        Ritoccare lentamente, una volta per tutte, il nucleo di T2 per portare la sella del tracciato della figura 3 (vedere articolo DRM1) in corrispondenza del valore di 12 kHz. 

        Con il mouse cliccare all’interno del quadrante per posizionare la barra colorata verticale su 12 kHz. Agendo sullo slider restringere la banda passante in modo da comprendere tutta la cresta dell’onda (fig 4).

        Per le altre operazioni e suggerimenti vari attenersi sempre al DRM1.

Inauguración de Radio FM en Escuela de Yavi Chico, Jujuy En el marco del Programa de Radios en Escuelas Rurales y de Frontera del Comité Federal de Radiodifusión (COMFER), se inauguró los primeros días de marzo de 2008 la Radio FM en la Escuela N° 2 "Rosario Wayar" de la localidad de Yavi Chico, en la provincia de Jujuy.


Chile

Radios FM Hit y 40 Principales se fusionaron Se fusionaron las estaciones juveniles FmHit y 40 Principales, dando vida a una nueva radio que se llama Los 40 Hit.


Ecuador

En Ecuador hay 275 radios en AM y 898 en FM El espectro radioeléctrico, la radiodifusión sonora, la estación matriz, la estación repetidora, la televisión abierta, la televisión codificada y la televisión por cable, fueron los temas tratados el viernes pasado en las Mesas 1 y 2 de la Asamblea.


México

Incertidumbre por la nueva legislación de radio y televisión Existe una gran incertidumbre en torno a la nueva legislación en materia de radio, televisión y telecomunicaciones que es elaborada en el Senado.


Nicaragua

Escuelas radiofónicas tienen 9 mil alumnos campesinos No tienen aulas, tampoco pizarras, mucho menos pupitres frente a ellos cuando imparten sus clases. Sólo cuentan con un micrófono y la fe de que miles de nicaragüenses de las zonas rurales del país están aprendiendo a leer y a escribir. "El maestro en casa", es una nueva modalidad que está impartiendo la Dirección de Educación de Adultos del Ministerio de Educación.

Hi amigos radioaficionados around the world and in space , you are all most welcome to the weekend program of Dxers Unlimited, coming to you when once again solar optical observations show a spotless solar disc !!! Zero sunspots during four of the past six days until March the seventh... and nevertheless I see reports of 10 meters band openings between Namibia, callsign prefix V51 and Southern Europe, something that can be explained by the typical enhancement of trans equatorial propagation that happens as we approach the spring equinox of the Northern Hemisphere. So, Saturday and Sunday I will be keeping a close watch on both 10 meters and 6 meters for South American stations that are surely going to be coming in to the Caribbean from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile , Bolivia and Brazil... TEP, or Transequatorial propagation is one of the most interesting modes of Ionospheric propagation that incidentally was discovered by radio amateurs more than 50 years ago...

Item two: Got a recent report of Radio Guama, the Pinar del Rio provincial network heard in Texas on 990 kiloHertz, their main station located near the city that has the same name of the province, Pinar del Rio. Radio Guama is also on the air on FM, so I expect to see reports of their FM broadcasts when the spring-summer sporadic E season starts...

Item three: Also about Cuban AM broadcast stations between 900 and 1000 kiloHertz, right in the middle of the classic AM analog radio´s dials... On 900 kiloHertz Radio Progreso´s 50 kiloWatts located in Holguin province can be usually heard in the Caribbean, Central America ,the USA and Canada by nulling the Mexican station on the same channel XEW, that according to some sources runs a very high power transmitter on that frequency. Many years ago, the Chief Engineer of Radio Progreso Cuban National Network, Carlos Estrada , visited Mexico City to attend an International Radio Broadcasting Conference, and he came back very impressed by the XEW 250 kilowWatt transmitter that used a Doherty type linear amplifier. Doherty and Terman-Woodyard linear amplifiers are now part of broadcast history, because practically all if not all of today´s new transmitters are built using solid state devices that operate with rather low voltages . The solid state power output stages are modular, so in case one of them fails the transmitter still stays on the air at reduced power output, something broadcasters appreciate very much...

Si amigos, sure, AM broadcast band Dx season for this winter is about to come to an end, but if just gives way to the spring equinoctial DX season that brings in some very nice openings too, especially at just after local sunset... With the extremely low solar flux that we are observing nowadays, I expect a very nice AM band spring equinox DX season to be starting up by next week… Now, more about Cuban AM stations in the 900 to 1000 kiloHertz segment of the AM broadcast band… on 910 kiloHertz here in Havana , we have Radio Metropolitana, a local capital city station that is on the air 24 hours , and on that same frequency 910 kiloHertz we also have Radio Cadena Agramonte from Camaguey city, that can be heard very well all over eastern Cuba due to its transmitter´s excellent location. And here in Havana, on 950 kiloHertz we have the 10 kiloWatt Radio Reloj, the easiest Cuban station to identify because it sends out the letters R R on CW many times every day… You will hear a one per second pulse and the RR on CW from all of Radio Reloj´s network stations… Cuba is now using its national fiber optics cables backbone distribution network, as well as the several microwave radio relay systems, so many times you will notice that Radio Reloj´s signals on different frequencies have a slight time delay due to the coding and decoding process of the digital systems used by the fiber optic equipment… By the way, this last item answers a question sent by listener Jeff, from Toronto, who asked why he could hear on two radios slightly different audio from Radio Reloj on 950 and 1020 kiloHertz...

Now here is our next item… a special or amateur radio operators that are getting ready for the spring equinox DX season… Don´t expect this season to be a record breaking one… solar cycle 24 has not shown any more signs of activity after the tiny high latitude sunspot, and cycle 23 continues to provide many, many days of zero sunspots… Anyway, during the spring equinox HF propagation conditions will certainly improve, and I expect that the 20 and 17 meter bands take a turn for the better starting in about a week or two from now...

Another news item for radio amateurs has to do with the 60 meters band, that is now slowly becoming available to ham radio operators in some countries, although the trend is to authorize the use of specific frequencies, in other words, that the telecoms administrations want to keep radio amateur operators on the 5 megaHertz region of the HF spectrum tied to channelized operation, in order to avoid conflicts with primary users of that very much sought band of frequencies. 60 meters should be particularly useful for handling emergency traffic when the 40 meters band closes up for near vertical incidence skywave propagation, the mode used to communicate at short distances on the HF bands during emergencies.

Now here is ASK ARNIE, la numero uno, the most popular section of the program according to your e-mail messages, letters, fax reports and when some of you visit here in Havana and have the opportunity to talk to us about our programming… ASK ARNIE today is answering the question sent by listeners in Canada, the USA , the UK and Germany about DRM , Digital Radio Mondiale, the digital system that several stations are using now on the international short wave bands.

Well amigos Mark, Charlie, Ian and Rudolph… DRM continues to be a source of controversial opinions among the world´s mass communications researchers, but there seems to be a consensus about the waste of resources that DRM is causing to the broadcast organizations, many of which are openly talking about severe budget limitations. It is quite contradictory to watch how an international broadcaster spends money in transmitting using DRM signals that have practically no listeners, while at the same time cutting back programs and language services that do have a well established audience, fully equipped with short wave radios that are working perfectly well... The worst thing that is happening now is that there are no DRM capable receivers available at a competitive cost… and event the DRM receivers that do exist are as hard to find as the proverbial extinct DODO bird… If DRM wants to really survive, it must find financing for producing a high quality low cost receiver that could flood the world marketplace… That should be the number one objective of the DRM Consortium if they really want DRM to be successful… Instead of encouraging broadcasters to waste their limited resources in buying new DRM capable transmitters and put them on the air for many hours every day with no listeners picking up those broadcasts at the other end… someone must advise the Consortium about both basic marketing and audience research...

Just recently a well known Cuban senior engineer and university professor commented to me that the DRM basic transmission mode for short wave was showing very poor performance even at what he described as ideal distances for HF broadcasting. Professor Jose Angel Amador played back to me recordings of DRM broadcasts from the Montsinery site of Radio France International , that showed frequent totally silent periods as propagation conditions changed abruptly between Montsinery and Havana, changing from single hop to double hop back and forth.

Professor Amador´s findings coincide very well with what I witnessed several years ago in South Africa when experimental DRM broadcasts from the Sines, Portugal site were sent beaming to Johannesburg… instead of the slow fading typical of such a long path multiple hops propagation observed with AM signals, the DRM was either heard with good quality or just vanished , making it impossible to follow the program content because of the silence periods… The Montsinery to Havana path studied by Professor Amador is just another solid evidence that even if and when receivers are available, DRM broadcasts on short wave are much less reliable and less user friendly than standard AM and even than Single Side Band suppressed carrier signals ! ! !

I do believe that it is about time that broadcasters that are testing DRM without listeners bring those tests to an end in order to save energy and reduce radio frequency pollution, as well as CO2 emissions that result from the generation of electricity that is wasted powering up those DRM transmitters...

My point of view is that if a station puts a signal on the air that can be heard somewhere, the energy and resources invested are well worth the effort… but why waste so much resources sending out DRM broadcasts that nobody can hear ?.

This is Radio Havana Cuba, the name of the show is Dxers Unlimited and here is now our next item… our antenna topics section, that today will be devoted to folded vertical grounded monopole antenna as a small footprint option for radio amateurs wanting to operate their stations with a low take off angle antenna. My experiments with the folded vertical grounded monopoles started just recently after reviewing several technical papers about this type of antenna that is more and more becoming the de facto standard for AM broadcast band transmitting installations. It was quite clear from the conclusions of the technical papers that the folded vertical grounded monopole could become a very nice antenna for amateur stations , especially those operating on the 160 , 80 and 40 meters bands… I am now in the process of gathering the materials to build and install a folded vertical grounded monopole antenna for the 20 meters band, a sort of scale model to test how it works as compared to a standard quarter wave vertical antenna with elevated radials that is going to be used as a reference at the same site, at CO2KK my ham radio station… As soon as the new test antenna goes up and results can be analyzed, you will hear about them here at your favorite hobby program… Dxers Unlimited that is now coming to an end today with our HF plus low band VHF propagation update and forecast. Very low solar activity, zero sunspots, but due to the approaching spring equinox, we will be witnessing somewhat better propagation conditions especially around local sunset… See you all at the upcoming mid week edition of Dxers Unlimited next Tuesday and Wednesday UTC days amigos ! ! !

ROMA, IN TRASLOCO TRALICCI MONTE MARIO E MONTE CAVO

L'antenna Rai di Monte Mario potrebbe sparire presto dallo skyline di Roma. E a seguirla saranno anche tutte le altre antenne televisive nazionali e regionali a partire da quelle di Mediaset. In altre parole tutte le antenne televisive di Roma nord, oltre a quelle di Monte Cavo a Rocca di Papa, saranno trasferite a breve in altri siti. Questo lo scenario prossimo futuro che si sta delineando in merito alla localizzazione delle antenne televisive a Roma e nel Lazio dopo l'approvazione, avvenuta questa mattina dalla commissione Urbanistica del Consiglio regionale del Lazio, di una variante che sblocca il "Piano territoriale di coordinamento per la localizzazione degli impianti di emittenza in attuazione del piano nazionale delle frequenze per il sistema televisivo regionale", ora atteso dal via libera finale del Consiglio della Pisana. La delibera approvata stamani, alla presenza dell'assessore all'Urbanistica Massimo Pompili, sblocca l'iter del piano elaborato dalla giunta regionale Badaloni e poi recepito da quella di Storace. Il blocco era stato causato dalla volonta' di trovare siti alternativi al Colle Anfagione, originariamente indicato come luogo dove trasferire parte delle antenne di Roma nord e di Rocca di Papa. Al suo posto la delibera individua Colle Sterpaio, a Capranica Prenestina, e Monte Gennaro (San Polo dei Cavalieri) all'interno dell'area protetta del parco regionale dei Monti Lucretili. In entrambi questi luoghi saranno installati due tralicci. In generale il piano prevede la localizzazione di 19 siti alternativi sul territorio regionale che andranno ad ospitare le antenne radio tv che dovranno trasferirsi. Coinvolti nell'operazione i siti di Monte Mario e Rocca di Papa, dove il 100 % delle antenne televisive saranno trasferite, anche se nel secondo caso restera' quel 50 % delle antenne attualmente presenti ma che riguardano la radiofonia e gli impianti militari. "Il nostro obiettivo- ha spiegato Pompili- è quello di risolvere un'ingiustizia e di farlo in modo equo, governando un possibile conflitto sociale. Sui siti di Monte Mario e Monte Cavo, infatti, c'e' la piu' alta concentrazione europea di antenne: in particolare la comunita' dei Castelli romani si fa carico da decenni di una servitu' molto gravosa". Da qui l'esigenza di un riequilibrio, individuando nuovi luoghi dove sistemare le antenne per abbassare la potenza elettromagnetica che dai Castelli produce i suoi effetti fino ai quartieri romani di Cinecitta' e Tor Bella Monaca. SILENT KEY: RENATO ZUCCHETTI R.I.P.


Un improvviso infarto ha stroncato la vita di Renato Zucchetti di Milano, iscritto a Play-dx dagli anni 80, era tornato nel mondo del radioascolto agli inizi degli anni 2000 anche grazie al fatto che era riuscito ad andare in pensione ed aveva ripreso i suoi vari hobby, tra i quali ovviamente quello del radioascolto in tutte le sue varietà. Per fare ascolto si isolava sulle colline Pavesi lontano dal QRN della grande metropoli. Ricorderemo particolarmente le sue partecipazioni piene di brio e di allegria agli incontri organizzati da playdx nel novembre 2007 e quello dell'ottobre 2005 a Corsico. Le sue barzellette e le sue risate iconoclastiche ! i suoi dibattiti sulle antenne ! Purtroppo aveva già avuto problemi con il suo cuore ballerino e sfortunatamente questa volta non ha vinto la sua battaglia personale ! I nostri sinceri sentimenti di condoglianze alla sua famiglia da parte di tutti gli iscritti di Playdx, del Co.Rad. e di Bclnews.

Geomagnetic activity was dominated by the influence of a recurrent coronal hole. Effects were observed in two periods. A first moderate geomagnetic activity period was detected late on Feb 27th and early on Feb 28th. A longer period of unsettled and minor storm conditions was then observed later on Feb 28th, at planetary and regional levels (K=5 at Dourbes, Feb 28th 21-24 UT); it ended on March 1st at planetary levels.

San Marino RadioTv sbarca in Italia. Grazie all'accordo sottoscritto oggi dal ministro degli Esteri sammarinese, il segretario di Stato Fiorenzo Stolfi, e il titolare della Farnesina, Massimo D'Alema, l'emittente di Stato di San Marino arrivera' sulle frequenze in chiaro del digitale terrestre italiano. Soddisfatto Stolfi: "E' un ottimo accordo- spiega all'agenzia Dire- che conferma i rapporti esistenti tra i due Paesi e costituisce la premessa positiva per ulteriori accordi in campo economico e culturale". L'accordo siglato oggi a Roma ha una durata quinquennale al termine della quale l'intesa sara' rinnovata tacitamente di biennio in biennio, salvo disdetta da una delle due parti. "Cinque anni- sottolinea Stolfi- consentono spazio e condizioni per programmare uno sviluppo costante nel tempo per San Marino Rtv". Rispetto alla precedente intesa, siglata nel 1992, l'accordo elimina il vincolo di esclusiva tra San Marino e Italia: "Resta un'importante collaborazione- sottolinea Stolfi- per quanto riguarda il servizio pubblico radiotelevisivo, ma non piu' in esclusiva. San Marino ora potra' utilizzare anche altre emittenti private". In sostanza, il Titano "recupera la sua sovranita' e una liberta' di movimento che non avevamo". In arrivo per San Marino RadioTv un canale sul digitale e, a breve, anche una presenza sul satellite: "In particolare- sottolinea Stolfi- una presenza programmatica mirata all'area adriatico-balcanica per la promozione della cultura e dell'immagine dei due Paesi". Un allegato all'accordo siglato oggi a Roma dal segretario di Stato agli Esteri di San Marino e dal ministro degli Esteri italiano, Massimo D'Alema, impegna la Rai a offrire al Titano dei corsi di formazione professionale rivolti a giornalisti, operatori e amministratori dell'emittente di Stato. Sempre in base all'accordo, San Marino Rtv entra a pieno titolo tra le emittenti a cui la tv di Stato italiana puo' affidare la produzione di programmi e contenuti. In cambio, "San Marino concede all'Italia 3 delle 5 frequenze che ha avuto in assegnazione dall'autorita' internazionale delle comunicazioni". Frequenze gia' utilizzate dalla Rai o date in concessione, per cui San Marino Rtv incassera' ogni anno dall'Italia 3 milioni e 94 mila euro. (Dire)

ITALIA-SAN MARINO/ D'ALEMA E STOLFI FIRMANO NUOVA INTESA RADIO-TV

Un nuovo accordo bilaterale fra Italia e San Marino per la collaborazione nel settore radiotelevisivo è stato sottoscritto stamattina alla Farnesina dal ministro degli Esteri Massimo D'Alema e dal collega sammarinese Fiorenzo Stolfi. "Tale intesa - fanno sapere dal ministero degli Esteri con un comunicato - si colloca nel contesto degli eccellenti rapporti tra i due Paesi e rappresenta una ulteriore conferma della comune volontà di consolidarli nei diversi settori". Alla luce delle rapide innovazioni tecnologiche nel settore radiotelevisivo, e in particolare nella prospettiva del passaggio al sistema digitale, si è ritenuto necessario aggiornare il quadro di riferimento della cooperazione bilaterale nel settore (l'ultimo accordo risaliva al 1987). Nella prospettiva dell'utilizzo del sistema di diffusione satellitare, l'accordo prevede la possibilità di una programmazione mirata all'area adriatico-balcanica per la promozione della lingua italiana, della cultura e dell'immagine dei due Paesi. L'intesa conferma, tra l'altro, la collaborazione tra i due servizi pubblici radiotelevisivi; prevede una possibile estensione del bacino d'utenza per l'emittente sammarinese; e istituisce una Commissione Mista con un ruolo non solo di monitoraggio ma anche propositivo nei temi oggetto dell'intesa. LA BBC LANCIA SUO CANALE TV IN LINGUA ARABA

La Bbc lancera' l'11 marzo un canale in lingua araba interamente dedicato a notizie, analisi e commenti. Si chiamera' 'Bbc Arabic Television'. Sara' disponibile via satellite - gratuitamente grazie ai fondi pubblici - in tutto il Medio-Oriente, Nord Africa e Golfo Persico. 'Il nuovo canale televisivo - ha spiegato oggi l'emittente britannica presentando il progetto - in un primo momento trasmettera' 12 ore al giorno, mentre passera' a 24 su 24, sette giorni su sette, entro l'estate'. Il palinsesto prevede un aggiornamento delle notizie ogni 15 minuti e un tg completo ogni 30 - il tutto grazie ai 250 corrispondenti dislocati presso i 72 bureau che la Bbc possiede sparsi per il mondo. In piu', due volte al giorno andra' in onda 'Newshour', programma di approfondimento che affronta spinosi temi di attualita'. Contestualmente, sara' lanciata una nuova versione del sito internet 'bbcarabic.com' - permettendo alla BBC di perseguire la sua strategia di diffusione che va sotto il nome di 'tri-media': televisione, radio, internet. ''Bbc Arabic' - il servizio radio in arabo di BBC - e' gia' rinomata per la sua copertura accurata e imparziale', ha detto il direttore di BBC World Service Nigel Chapman. Il nuovo pacchetto investimenti nella regione vuole dunque conquistarsi un pubblico sempre piu' 'affamato di notizie e analisi'. 'Avremo uno stile moderno e faremo un giornalismo incisivo e indipendente', ha concluso Chapman. L'ambizione di Bbc e' di guadagnarsi 20 milioni di spettatori per settimana entro il 2010 - e di toccare quota 35 se si include radio e internet. (ANSA)

The Boat That Rocked

Negli anni ‘60 e ‘70 l’Inghilterra fu testimone di un singolare fenomeno, destinato a cambiare per sempre il mondo delle radio: le ‘Radio Pirata’, così chiamate perchè trasmettevano da navi ancorate appena al di fuori delle acque territoriali del Regno Unito, in modo da aggirare le leggi vigenti. Erano comunque illegali e soggette a raid ed ispezioni continue da parte delle autorità, il che rendeva alquanto movimentata la vita quotidiana dei DJ e dei produttori a bordo di quei vascelli. Radio Caroline era una di queste stazioni radio pirata. A portare sullo schermo la vicenda di questa radio particolare, sarà un team di attori pluriblasonati: Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, January Jones e, se le attuali trattative avranno esito positivo, Philip Seymour Hoffman nel ruolo dell’irriverente DJ The Count. Dirige Richard Curtis ("Il Diario di Bridget Jones"). Le riprese del film (titolo provvisorio "The Boat That Rocked") inizieranno il prossimo 3 marzo a Londra. (Hollywood Insider)

ELETTROSMOG: RAI, TAR ANNULLA ORDINE RISANAMENTO DEL 2001

Accogliendo un ricorso della Rai, il Tar del Piemonte ha annullato il provvedimento con cui la Regione, nel 2001, ordino' all'azienda di ridurre la potenza dei ripetitori del Colle della Maddalena (Torino). La Regione, dopo un controllo dei tecnici dell'Arpa di Ivrea, aveva intimato 'il risanamento del sito' entro 45 giorni per le televisioni (RaiUno, RaiDue, RaiTre) ed entro 15 per le radio (Isoradio, Fm1, Fm2, Fm3 e Filodiffusione). I giudici del Tar (ai quali si sono rivolte Rai spa e Rai Way) hanno però ravvisato una violazione di legge, in quanto l'azienda non era stata informata dell'apertura del procedimento amministrativo. La stessa societa', peraltro, nel proprio ricorso aveva lamentato 'l'errata applicazione dei criteri di misurazione (della potenza degli impianti - ndr) e la mancata verifica delle azioni di risanamento condotte da Rai'. L'ordine della Regione aveva gia' perduto di efficacia il 25 luglio del 2001, quando il Tar ne decretò la sospensiva. (ANSA)

Background information

BBC Brasil entered the world of international news on 14 March 1938 with the words: "... Mister Hitler entered Vienna last night, amid formidable enthusiasm. Standing up, inside his open car, he repeatedly answered, with Nazi greetings, to the crowd's cheering." The voice belonged to presenter Manuel Braune, who would be known to millions of radio listeners as "Aimberê".

BBC Brasil was part of the BBC Empire Service which began in 1932 as a shortwave service first broadcasting in English to the outposts of the British Empire. Initially, the BBC Brazilian service was part of the Latin American service, and its programmes were reproductions of the programmes broadcast in English. Back then, half a dozen Latin American journalists made programmes for the whole of Latin America and news in Spanish. During the Second World War, the Latin American service was divided into two parts: one broadcasting to Brazil and the other - to Latin America's Spanish-speaking countries.

Today BBC Brasil has restructured itself around its online offer, with focus on video content and interactivity. It has around 30 staff based in the UK and Brazil. The London- based team is supported by a global network of BBC correspondents and journalists in key cities across the world. BBC Brasil's São Paulo-based bureau - the largest news bureau in Brazil - houses a major part of the service's editorial staff which contributes to the news content and features on air and online.

Dxers Unlimited´s weekend edition for 1 – 2 March 2008

Hi amigos radio aficionados around the world and orbiting Planet Earth… welcome to the weekend edition of Dxers Unlimited, reaching you while the Sun is in a very quiet state, zero sunspots, a blank Sun once again, after a lonely solar cycle 23 sunspot vanished behind at the edge of the solar disk... By the way, this sunspot group , number 983, forms part of cycle 23, something that can be affirmed because of its very near the solar Equator position. So once again we are entering into another period of very, very low solar activity that belongs to the tail end of cycle 23… Item two: for those of you located at latitudes above 40 degrees North, there are chances of geomagnetic disturbances caused by a high speed solar wind, and it those disturbances do happen, AM medium wave broadcast band Dxing enthusiasts will once again be able to pick some really nice DX stations located South of your location…
Item three: Ionospheric oblique incidence sounders of the type known as chirp sounders, have confirmed that during the extended periods of very low solar activity, the nighttime maximum useable frequency has gone down to around 5 megahertz, yes, you heard it right, 5 megahertz for several hours, something that only happens during extremely low solar activity …

You are listening to Radio Havana Cuba, the name of the show is Dxers Unlimited, and here is item five of today’s program… more information about homebrew radios and tips about building them. For the past five or six years, I have been involved in the development of amateur radio transceivers, that is a ham radio station that is self contained in a single package, with some circuits that are shared between the receive and transmit functions. That’s a nice way of saving some components, and these radios are different from transmitter – receiver sets, that have completely self contained receivers and transmitters in the same box. Transceivers are of course more compact and they offer the advantage of single knob tuning. If your set is a transmitter – receiver, you will have to deal with two tuning knobs, separate tuning for the transmitter’s frequency and the receiver’s frequency… Well, the latest version of my low cost, simple transceiver, is now well under way, with many nice features that include a separate power supply. This new version of the Super Islander single band amateur transceiver is capable of running up to 50 Watts power input to the final amplifier stage, something that I have found to be necessary during this extended period of very low solar activity and poor propagation conditions.

The Super Islander MARK THREE follows the modular construction technique that has proven to be so successful in past projects, as one can test the modules as they are built, and if you want to upgrade a module, it is a very easy task to replace an old one and install the new upgraded module. The Super Islander Mark Three is a very flexible design, something that was necessary so that those who homebrew them may make the best possible use of whatever electronic components they have at hand. As a matter of fact, the Super Islander Mark Three can best be described as the ultimate in modular construction flexibility, with the design making possible for builders to change modules very easily and test upgrades, while , in case something goes wrong, one can just go back to the previous configuration of the transceiver. Maybe in the not too distant future, a complete kit o the Super Islander Mark Three may be made available by the Cuban Electronic Industry, which is now producing high technology medical diagnostic equipment that is used not only by the Cuban Public Health System, but that is also sold to many countries around the world. The Cuban Electronic Industry has the know how and equipment to produce high quality printed circuits, of the type required for amateur radio equipment, so a transceiver kit produced here in Cuba could be made available at much lower cost than a commercially assembled one… In the meantime, we continue to test our designs, and I can tell you that the results achieved so far with the receiver section of the Super Islander Mark Three design are very encouraging.

Now here is item six: Our number one most popular section of the program YOU have questions and Arnie answers them… I do receive lots of radio hobby related questions every week that are sent to arnie at rhc. Dot cu , or reach me via air mail postcards and letters sent to Arnie Coro, Radio Havana Cuba, Havana, Cuba…Many are answered immediately from a computer data base, while others require individual answers because of their nature, like the one that came in on Wednesday of this week asking about how one could tell if a transistor could be used as a radio frequency amplifier at some specific band of frequencies. Well amigo Oliver from Liverpool, England, as a very good friend of mine says, when trying to find if a particular solid state device would work, or won’t work as an amplifier at a specific band of frequencies you have to deal with two options: one try to obtain the original manufacturers information data, and if possible even their original test circuits, and if that is not possible, then just go the long way around and assemble a test jig, that will allow you to actually test the operation of the device under conditions that are as identical as possible as how it will operate when used by your design. Having access, for example, to a sophisticated instrument known as a transistor curve tracer will simplify your work, but there are some nice little tricks of the trade that can be put to very good use… For example, I have a test jig that uses a quarts crystal overtone oscillator circuit that can operate with crystals of the third and fifth overtone types… A transistor that will oscillate with the one hundred and ten megahertz fifth overtone crystal will certainly be a good amplifier device on frequencies up to around 20 megahertz or so… And my test jig has a very simple power output meter that serves as a very good indicator to show the actual gain of each transistor under test at the specific frequency… It is then very easy to choose the best devices for the most critical applications amigos !!! There are many homebrew test instruments that will help you a lot Oliver, like a grid dip meter, a simple signal generator, and of course, a high quality digital millimeter that is nowadays an essential test instrument that should be in every radio hobby enthusiast tool box!!!

Amigos you are listening to the weekend edition of Dxers Unlimited, our twice weekly radio hobby program, here is now item seven… An antenna topic, that is today combined with Ask Arnie, as this second question to be answered here today has to do with antennas. Listener Jennifer from Arkansas , USA, tells me that she lives at a downtown location, where the radio noise level is high. Arnie, she says in her e-mail, I can easily tell the presence of several computers, which are turned off late at night, as the noise level drops everyday like clockwork around midnight… And Jennifer asks what type of antenna can be used to minimize the noise coming from the computers. Well amiga Jennifer my advice is for you to buy or homebrew a magnetic loop antenna, which according to all the tests that I have done here provides the best option as regards to canceling noise sources that come from a specific location. BUT, let me warn you that if the computers generating the harmful radio interference are located all around you, it is going to be very difficult to cancel the noise. In any case, if you keep using your radio’s telescopic whip, you will notice that the computer generated noise is high, if you switch to an outdoor balanced dipole fed via a balun and coaxial double shielded downlead, the noise will go down, especially if you place the dipole so as to minimize the signal from the noise source, but as I said earlier, a tunable magnetic loop that can be turned around will provide the best possible cancellation of radio frequency noise sources that originate in your immediate vicinity… Professionally built, remotely tuned magnetic loops capable of operating between 10 and 30 megahertz are available from several manufacturers, similar magnetic loops for the frequency range 3 to 10 megahertz are also available, but they are much more expensive and harder to find… Home brewing a simple receive only magnetic loop is something that the average radio hobby enthusiast can accomplish following the many construction projects available from several Internet websites…After some practice and experiments, I am sure amiga Jennifer that with a few hand tools and thee help of a more experienced short wave listener or radio amateur you can homebrew your magnetic loop and install it so that your reception will improve. I have already sent you several photos and drawings of magnetic loops, just to give you an idea about how they look and how easily the receive only versions can be assembled using readily available materials...

And now amigos, as always at the end of the program here is your friend’s Arnie Coro CO2KK HF propagation update and forecast… Its freely available for distribution , of course… Solar activity again at rock bottom levels, some surprising and not expected Sporadic E events have happened during the past week at a time that according to past records they are much less frequent, so keep a good watch on frequencies above 20 megahertz for signs of short skip that indicate the presence of Sporadic E clouds. Solar flux hovering around 70 units, no sunspots in sight and the high speed solar wind hitting the Earth´s magnetosphere is now slowing up, so the geomagnetic disturbance indicator is now moving back to normal values.
