** BIAFRA [non]. 15560, Sept 1 at 1807, another attempt to hear the new
clandestine Radio Biafra, but it`s only a JBA carrier on the NRD-545; unlike
Vatican direct in Portuguese on 15570, VOA Amharic from Woofferton on 15630,
both fairly good; but NO sign of VOA English via Botswana on 15580! So R. Biafra
continues to unseem out of a western Europe site such as Issoudun, France. Other
obvious possible sites for R. Biafra would be Madagascar or South Africa, but
should provide better signals onward to here. Instead it could be a ME site such
as UAE which can reach central Africa well from the other side, but not much our
way (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BOLIVIA [and non].
6155.05, Sept 1 at 0048, talk in Quechua? And het from a 6155.00 station, as the
upper one`s carrier is slightly unstable. Presumed R. Fides, which is usually
closer to 6155.10. The lower one is presumably AIR Aligarh in Urdu from 0015
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CANADA. 2598-SSB, Aug 31 at
0520 UT, too weak talk to copy, but it`s a Canadian CG frequency for N/L marine
weather. Per Bill Hepburn`s schedule at this hour,
it`s
the one QC station in this group, CJH-22, Natashquan (Rivière au Renard), which
is on the coast ouest of Terre-Neuve, starting at 0437 --- that`s quite a while
ago, but no further broadcasts among the seven stations until Placentia at 0737
UT.
I was also looking for the 2600-AM carrier, probable MW harmonic,
but not heard now, apparently needing daytime facility circa sunset (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 15700, Sept 1 at 1401, still
dead air from CRI English relay; finally cuts on modulation at 1402.3. The
ChiCom don`t trust the Albanians to run the Cërrik relay reliably, so why should
they trust the Cubans? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GREECE.
9935, Sept 1 at 0103, VOG with usual whine atop music, // 9420 without whine.
These had been missing for a couple of nights; weekend variation? (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** HAWAII. 6501-USB, Aug 31 at 1232, Pacific
marine weather info with coordinates, very distorted audio. No ham would allow
his SSB to sound like this, but the USCG would: EiBi shows 6501 shared by AK,
GU, HI, and VA stations; at this hour, 1200-1235, NMO, Honolulu, site nm which
means Maili (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA [and
non]. 9526, Sept 1 at 1404, CRI Russian on 9525 has het from the hi side, only
evidence that VOI is active. It`ll be a rare day if VOI is ever modulating and
signalling strong enough before 1400 to hear it in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 870, Aug 31 at 1205 UT, non-Spanish language
mentions Guachochi, pronounces call XETAR as in Spanish, Secretaría de Salud PSA
in Spanish. So this indigenous Chihuahuan is again audible around sunrise here,
but soon fades (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 970,
Aug 31 at 1207 UT, ranchera music, roughly SW/NE; splatter from local 960 KGWA
worse than usual. XEJ Juárez was ranchera, but long gone. Could be any one of
another Chihuahuan, Sonoran or Sinaloan. 1213 announcement but fading out (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. It`s September but still some
Es openings, UT Sept 1:
1630 on 2, fade in some video; 1643 stronger to
see it`s Info7 per lower-right bug, i.e. XHTAU Tampico
1643 on 2, then
it`s PLAN B, and with some same-offset CCI. At first not clear it this is still
XHTAU or something else like XHY Mérida. But PLAN B is a Mon-Sat 11 am-noon CT
show from Azteca Noreste:
I.e.
originating in Monterrey but on ch 2 from Tampico, so apparently the Info7 bug
comes and goes, especially during PLAN B segments.
1701 on 2, Info 7
again, zero CCI; occasional further video until 1730 or so (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6950.0-USB, Sept 1 at 0007, pirate
music poor at S7; gone at 0039 recheck. Several logs here, also with some SSTV
shots, say it was Amphetamine Radio until 0013*:
(Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OMAN. 9740, Sept 1 at 0103, Qur`an,
~S6, no doubt RSO extending the 22-24 frequency instead of QSY to 9500 after
0000. No sign of 9745-CUSB Bahrain, which is supposedly 24 hours, but never
heard here. Is it active? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
**
PERU. 5980, Sept 1 at 0100, no signal from R. Chaski, so off early or not on at
all this date? Bolivians on 49m are audible. There is some remnant Cuban pulse
jamming, however, on 5980 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
**
SPAIN. 15490, Sept 1 at 1809, open carrier/dead air from REE, supposed to start
at 1800; NO signals on 17855, 17715 or 15450, off and/or not propagating (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U K. 3950-3955-3960, Sept 1 at 0504,
DRM noise, i.e. BBC Woofferton English during this hour only. Haven`t heard any
AM broadcasts on 75m from Europe since early spring (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 8820, Aug 31 at 2355 I am sitting on this
with NRD-545 BFO offset, to detect if and when a carrier come up here, 1300 kHz
above 7520 WWCR which is about to turn on, with the PL-880 USB tuned to 7519.
Yes! Both appear at exactly the same time, *2358:47 UT, so this SW + MW mixing
product is confirmed.
I immediately retune to the SW minus MW mix on
6220, which is much stronger and hear the usual WWCR steel drum IS mixing with
Spanish. 6220, UT Sept 1 at 0000, WMDB, Nashville TN via WNQM via WWCR, ranchera
music continues while briefly hear CCI from USB Spanish mariner who again loses
his legit 2-way frequency.
By 0015, 6220 rates S7, while 8820 is about
S4, generally below the noise level; at 0038 I can hear a trace of Spanish music
on 8820. At 0043 I am back on 6220 to detect whether there`s a power cut at
0045. Meanwhile, I measure it more like 6219.97; at 0044 it does seem weaker vs
the noise level, about S5 tho no abrupt cut was obvious; by 0058 it`s a JBA
carrier. 8820 at 0046 is also a JBA carrier; it was so weak in the first place
that hard tp tell if it`s diminished now, but perhaps.
7520 itself, Sept
1 at 0052, rates 70 over S9! But it`s dead air! Finally at 0057, WWCR ID and
promos as modulation resumes.
WWCR transmitter schedules expired August
31:
So
it remains to be seen or heard whether 7520 will continue at 00-02 UT Tue-Sat
only, and with it 1300 kHz above and below, mix with WNQM and its relay of WMDB.
As I pointed out before, the official Sept sunset time for WNQM to reduce from
50 to 5 kW and go direxional is now 0000 UT, so the ``full power`` 6220 spur
would nominally exist only from 2358:47 to 2400. That`s why I am especially
satisfied to get the 8820 one confirmed at what may have been the last chance
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 9330.05-USB, Sept 1 at
0011, screaming gospel huxter, or rather a few words in more or less normal
tones, then Tourette`s syndrome erupting into an incomprehensible scream several
times per minute. This daily 00-01 UT broadcast of the `Full Gospel Hour` is now
WBCQ`s sole customer on 9330 (tho we also heard an unsked repeat of AWWW). He`s
also on the WWCR schedule: Sun 23-24 on 9350, Terry Blalock. Searching on that
name only gets hits for seemingly normal otherpeople. Except here`s a clip
courtesy of Bulgaria:
Recheck
at 0100, now it`s up to 9330.15-CUSB, playing WBCQ IS & ID, then generic
sign-off by Allan Weiner to 0101* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** U S A. 12104.94, Sept 1 at 0014, WTWW-3 with open-carrier/dead
air, depriving their Russian listener in the middle of the night. Still dead at
0044, 0104 chex by when should have been back into SFAW English. Wake up, Ted!
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 880-CUSB, Sept 1 at
0559, weather for Navajo Nation, KHAC ID, Tse (pronounced Say) Bonito, NM, and
``good night`` as if closing down, but continues with hymn (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 1560, Aug 31 at 0602 UT, partial ID ``PN
101.5`` amid heavy QRM, then ESPN`s Sports-Center; on the FRG-7 with longwire,
so no DFing; I was rechecking for the YSR unID, but none of it now. 2015 NRC AM
Log for 1560 shows no FM // 101.5 for an ESPN station or anything else. So I
reverse search, the WTFDA FM Database on 101.5 for an ESPN, and get one
hit:
WTHX 101.5 VINE GROVE KY 6.0 99.0 ESPN RADIO 101.5 SPORTS --- That`s SSW
of Louisville. So is there a 1560 near there? Three in KY, the closest one being
WKDO in Liberty, 1 kW daytimer, but supposed to be rock/oldies. Radio-Locator
agrees. That`s in south-central KY, 107 km or 66 miles from Vine Grove, not too
likely a share. Also WKDO has its own FM (not a translator) on 98.7. And WTHX
has no known connexion with any 1560 station:
So maybe this was
a totally false lead, meaning that some other 1560 ESPN now has an FM // on
101.5. How about the ESPN website? Affiliate list
claims
to be ``Updated: February 28, 2013, 12:16 PM ET``! And it`s not a list but a
Google map, unfriendly to search. KZQQ 1560 Abilene TX has been ESPN in the past
but is apparently Fox Sports currently. I give up for now. Any other ideas?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 2660-AM, Aug 31 at
0522, JBA music, probably 2 x 1330, KGLD Tyler TX; slightly on the hi side
compared to 1660 KWOD. BTW, I previously referred to KGLD being on 1300 instead
of correct 1330; i.e., nothing to do with another, unID harmonic on 2600 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
