I have no idea what kind of transmitter they are using, but could someone familiar with AM outsenders explain how this could happen? AM units are normally fixed on one frequency and of course there is no need to be able to switch them, unlike frequency-agile international SW transmitters with a keypad making it quite possible to manually punch in the wrong frequency.
