Glenn Hauser logs December 23-24, 2021

** BRAZIL. 9666.385, Dec 24 at 0728, RVM keeps creeping upward, now here, one of best extracontinental signals overnight, S4-S7 with good modulation in songs, 0730 pause for 4:30 timecheck (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 250 MCW kHz, Dec 24 at 0723 UT, dash and FO, ND beacon of 1600 watts at Flin Flon, Manitoba. A number of other Canadians audible, but this one not often. No Blitz storms anywhere in or around North America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Dec 23 at 0727, RHC English still on here only, S9 but undermodulated. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY [non]. For the first time this year, the annual `Gruss an Bord` from NDR carried on SW for mariners asea, Dec 24 at 1800-2100 was supposed to employ WRMI, on 15770, among several other sites.

But from 1800 onwards, 15770 continued with the SMTV cult as normally scheduled. I reminded Jeff about 15770 at 1806, but still SMTV at 1828. 15770 is JBA into UTwente anyway, so maybe not good into North Atlantic either. ``Go Tell It On The Mountain`` at 1831. 1845 still SMTV on 15770. And at 1936 recheck.

6080 Uzbekistan is best into UTwente, tho it can`t be aimed thataway. [Later:] Axually, HFCC shows 6080 Uzbekistan is 301 degrees aimed back toward Europe, CIRAF 27-28-29 with 125 kW. It also claims WRMI 15770 is 125 kW, despite all Okees being 100 or less.

Meanwhile, Harald Kuhl, Germany reported to BDXC that the SW program in German from 1800 was not `Gruss an Bord`, but something else. He phoned MBR and they got it corrected by 1900. So, screwups everywhere.

I stopped checking 15770 before 2000, but Richard Langley reports:

``So will the frequencies be extended by an hour so the full three hours can be transmitted? Likely not. And still no joy with WRMI on 15770 kHz. At 2000 UTC, Radio for Peace International started. By about 2030 UT, WRMI is now broadcasting Gruss an Bord on 15770 kHz. Don't know when it started. Usual powerful signal into NB. -- Richard Langley`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. 6000, Dec 24 at 0741, checking RHC frequencies but this one normally off by a sesquihour earlier, yet something weak is here and also with jamming noise. Must be Echo of Hope, instead of alternate 5995. No report from Ron this week about its current jumparounds, but Dec 24 Aoki has it on 6000 from 0500 but no indication of jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 486 kHz, Dec 24 at 2040-2047 UT, no signal detectable at closest SDRs in northern North Carolina, for special Fessenden commemoration broadcast, including music, scheduled for 24 hours starting 2000 UT Dec 24 (and again Dec 31), from WI2XLQ. This year`s publicity does not specify location but last year it was Forest, Virginia, a suburb of Lynchburg. Unfortunately no Kiwi SDRs nearby. Power not specified either but presumably very low, ``Part 5``. Last year it was 150 watts carrier output, maybe 15 watts ERP. Perhaps will get out better at night, if really on. Here is *last* year`s info: http://www.arrl.org/news/virginia-radio-amateur-will-commemorate-1906-fessenden-christmas-eve-broadcast And less detail this year: http://www.arrl.org/news/view/experimental-station-will-recreate-1906-fessenden-transmissions (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2118 monitoring: confirmed first SWBCs, UT Friday December 24 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850 VG direct, 7780 S9+10/20 into UTwente.

Also confirmed UT Fri Dec 24 at 0330 on WRMI 5985, JBA direct and into Querétaro SDR, but S9+5 off the back into Knoxville.

Also confirmed Fri Dec 24 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9/+10 direct, no jamming audible.

Also confirmed Fri Dec 24 at 1915 on IRRS SW 7290 via Bulgaria, and 918 kHz via AM Italia, Villa Estense, the latter VG S9+18 into nearby Noale KiwiSDR; but 7290 JBA into UTwente.

I had started listening to both about 1903, when 7290 seemed dead air at S8 with heavy ChiCom ACI de 7290 unless LSB-tuned; but 918 VG S9+18 with `Feature Story News`, 1904 ID, 1905 ``UN News``, 1908 music. By 1907 I could detect same modulation on 7290. WOR still going on both at 1925, but not positively confirmed lasting until 1944; rechecked at 1959, 918 interrupts a commentary about Iran vs USA, for ``IRRS signing off`` with the other Aïda theme, but 918 stays on air with FSN again from 2003.5. Next WORs:

** U S A. 6115, Dec 23 at *2159, WWCR-1 is back on this frequency, just signing on and 2200 into Spanish, as I tune in during WORLD OF RADIO 2118 recording. Notice about 6115 & 3215 being off the air has been removed from website. Span here is 22-02 UT. No 6114 RTTY audible now, but WWCR so strong that could block, or discourage, it.

3215, Dec 24 at 0735, other WWCR-1 frequency is also back, with TOMBS, S9+10/20. Span is 02-12 UT. Harold Frodge, MI, had heard 3215 as early as 0202 UT Dec 23.

4840, Dec 24 at 0735, this WWCR is S9+20/30 of dead air instead of TOMBS; happens all too frequently; or rather, make that: not frequently enough. 5890 still going with S9+40 of BS; and 5935 PMS hitting S9+50! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 2111 UT December 24

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity was way up this week, and it was reflected in on-air activity, especially on 10 meters. If only the ARRL 10-Meter Contest were held a week later! The average daily sunspot number jumped by 100 points — from 24.4 last week to 124.4 in the December 16 – 22 reporting week. Average daily solar flux increased from 82.9 to 125.

Average planetary A index went from 5 to 9.1, and average middle latitude A index from 3.9 to 6.4.

It was great to see online images of the sun covered with spots.

Predicted solar flux over the next week looks quite promising, with daily solar flux more than 100 until the end of the year, then rising above 100 on January 16 – 22. But the outlook issued on Thursday, December 23 wasn’t as optimistic as the one issued a day earlier.

Flux values are predicted at 130, 125, 120, 115, and 113 on December 24 – 28; 110 on December 29 – 30; 85 on December 31; then 83, 81, 80, and 81 on January 1 – 4; 82 on January 5 – 6; 83, 86, 90, and 92 on January 7 – 10; 95 on January 11 – 12; 96 on January 13 – 15, jumping up to 115 on January 16 – 17; 114, 111, and 110 on January 18 – 20; 108, 102, and 95 on January 21 – 23; 90, 88, 87, and 85 on January 24 – 27, then dropping to a low of 80 on January 30 before rising above 90 after the first week of February.

Predicted planetary A index is 20, 12, 16, 8, 10, and 12 on December 24 – 29; 8 on December 30 – 31, then 5 on January 1 – 8; 8 and 5 on January 9 – 10; 10 on January 11 – 12; 5 on January 13 – 14; 8, 12, 18, 12, and 8 on January 15 – 19; 5 on January 20 – 22; 8, 10, 8, and 8 on January 23 – 26, and 5 on January 27 – February 4.

These observations from J.K. Janda, OK1HH:

“Unlike meteorologists, for example, we do not have reliable models of the Sun’s behavior and subsequent changes in Earth’s magnetosphere and atmosphere. Therefore, we did not expect the current increase in activity. On the other hand, we can consider them as another promise of a higher maximum of Solar Cycle 25.

“Most spots are in the Sun’s southern hemisphere, M-class flares are observed in both hemispheres, the solar flux has climbed from the lowest to the highest values in 2 weeks, and the solar wind speed increased over 10 days.

“Geomagnetic activity increased relatively only slightly, but only after the spot activity moved to the western half of the solar disk. These changes were mostly favorable for HF propagation conditions. Before the start of the ascent, the 18 MHz band was regularly open for DX contacts, while more recently, the 21 MHz band has opened relatively reliably.

“As a result of the eruptions of previous days, Earth’s magnetic field activity should increase around December 24 and likely again on December 27.

“Before the end of the year, a significant increase in solar activity is expected before it rises again around mid-January.”

Thanks to KH6CP for this article on the new WindCube satellite:

W9NY wrote from Chicago:

“Even though conditions were disappointing for most of the ARRL 10-Meter Contest weekend, there were sporadic openings all over the United States from my Dune Acres location, and for a few minutes at a time signals, from both the Colorado and California areas were very strong. I also worked a number of stations in South America, but only Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

“On Sunday, 12/19, 10 really opened up for a while. I first heard a W6 beacon in the morning coming in S-9 and not another signal on the band. After one CQ at 28.420, I started a long string of contacts in late morning, and again during mid-afternoon. Some west coast stations running just 100 W to dipoles were coming in 20 dB over S-9, just like in the good old days.

“Made some contacts on 12 meters too. I heard nothing on 6 meters.

“I am looking forward to using my MFJ loop on 10 meters from Miami Beach over the first 3 months of 2022.”

KA3JAW monitors 11 meters for sporadic-E. On December 23 he wrote:

“Wednesday, December 22, saw a 6-hour multi-hop transatlantic sporadic-E event into western Europe on 11 meters, from 1326 to 1929 UTC. Solar flux index hit its highest point in the current solar cycle at 140. This was due to nine sunspot groups; 2907, 2908, 2909, 2911, 2912, 2915, 2916, 2917, and 2918.

“Sunday, December 19, saw a crazy 8-hour single and multi-hop sporadic-E day on 11 meters, from 1623 on December 19 until 0037 on December 20.

“During noontime, western Canadian prairie provinces plus US west coast stations were rolling into the US northeast. From 0222 until 2320 UTC, Es conditions were deteriorating with increased background noise conditions until the last station from Golden Valley, Arizona was heard at 0037 UTC. Seems that the secondary sporadic-E winter season has begun.”

On December 19, Steve Sacco (who did not give a call sign) wrote this, regarding 10 meters:

“I’ve never seen so many KL7s on at the same time. So far, have worked two, plus VE8CK and VY1FC.

“PSKR showing the band open from my location to Europe and KL7 and JA and VK at 2215 UTC on December 19. JA3REX worked at 2217 UTC.

“If only this had happened last weekend!”

Jon, N0JK, wrote:

“I was on 6 meters using MSK144 on the morning of December 14 at the peak of the Geminids meteor shower. 50.260 MHz was busy. Worked WI9WI, WG0G, and KF0Y in rare grid DN92 around 1400 UTC. All random contacts.

“Also checked 50.245 for W5A (EL15). Some flickers on the screen, but no decodes.”

W8TJM of Liberty Lake, Washington, commented on his December 19 activity on 15 meters:

“As soon as I got my 15 meter half-wave vertical antenna up at my low-noise site at 1915 UTC, I worked OH6RM in Finland. He was S-5 – S7 with very little QSB, and we had a solid 25-minute QSO, and then I listened to his contacts off and on for another hour. I also had an enjoyable contact with Per, SM2LIY, at 1950 UTC and he was also S-5 – S-7 but had a very fast flutter on his signal that was consistent. I heard no European stations.”

Carl, K9LA, commented:

“The paths that Toivo and Per commented on can be two different mechanisms depending on where the US station is. I wrote about this (called ‘the Santa Claus Polar Path‘) in my monthly column on my website back in 2014.

Space Weather Woman Tamitha Skov, WX6SWW, posted a new forecast on December 23 with a video running 96 minutes.

Sunspot numbers for December 16 – 22 were 127, 119, 117, 109, 115, 147, and 137, with a mean of 124.4. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 117.9, 120.9, 121.3, 115.3, 122.7, 136.6, and 140.4, with a mean of 125. Estimated planetary A indices were 8, 3, 4, 12, 16, 10, and 11, with a mean of 9.1. Middle latitude A index was 5, 2, 2, 8, 13, 7, and 8, with a mean of 6.4.

China Radio International - New programme schedule

CHINA. Firstly, I have noticed recently, that the English service of China Radio International now seems to be IDing as CGTN Radio. I'm not sure if this is at all times, but I can't recall hearing either the "China Plus" or "CRI" IDs recently.

Also, as of December 14, China now has a new worldwide broadcast programme schedule accessed via http://chinaplus.cri.cn/radio/program-schedule/737725. The "Beijing AM846" schedule seems to be the same as the shortwave schedule and is found at http://chinaplus.cri.cn/radio/program-schedule/737819. I haven't checked the full schedule, but spot checks confirm the new shortwave schedule is as shown for Beijing AM846. (Alan Roe via WOR io group)

Glenn Hauser logs December 23, 2021

** AUSTRIA. 6155, Dec 23 at 0641, non-classical music from Ö1, now S9+10/20, much better than usual. Until tonight I had been disappointed by poor signals during our only chance to hear ORF, the wake-up domestic service relay from 0600 to 0710/0720; even tho the English news capsule at the end was long ago eliminated. 0644 AustroGerman announcement, novelty song; 0647 TC for 7:47 and finally some Brahms. Moosbrunn 300 kW transmitters except for this are exclusively to relay foreign stations (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 7220, Dec 23 at 1547 good S8-S9 song, in English? Most likely CRI Japanese from Jinhua site this hour, ergo aimed sorta thisaway; rather than also EiBi-listed hour of VOV in Vietnamese to North Africa. No QRhaM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 9700, Dec 23 at 0550, VP signals SAHing, presumably Turkey and // 6000 RHC English. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6060, Dec 23 at 0550, RHC still colliding with Algeria via FRANCE. At 0646 S9+20 in the clear, mailbag in English, but somewhat distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6100, Dec 23 at 0551, RHC VP here in wrong language Spanish not English, // much better 5040; also ACI from 6105 Arabic = Algeria via France at 0500-0700. Same at 0637 recheck, S9/+10. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, UT Thu Dec 23 at 0643, RHC mailbag in English, S9+30 but undermodulated; // 9700 S9+10 also u-m. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Fog this morning, Dec 23 at 1510 UT, so there ought to be some tropo enhancement TV. Hepburn maps predict we`re on edge of Level 1, but up to level 4 blob south/eastward as of 1500. Most `open` channels 8-36 show BAD signals into the STB, but only one decodes, RF 26 as KOTV Tulsa on 6-1; KQCW-SD on 6-2; and NewsOn6 on 6-3; soon fading as does the visible fog (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. 6114, the RTTY INTRUDER, had been heard every night but not Dec 22 around 0700 check. Ron Howard replied to my previous inquiry:

``Hi Glenn - Dec 22, checking 6115 kHz between 0525 to 0610 UT. Japan starting to slowly fade up; no trace at all of Congo; normally Japan would be coming up about 0500, so tonight was rather poor; no RTTY or any kind of QRM; Japan with mostly non-stop pop songs (Ricky Martin - "Livin' La Vida Loca," etc.). Ron (California)``

6114, Dec 23 at 0546 the RTTY is back, vs JBA 6115 carrier presumed JAPAN not CONGO; still at 0640 when Nikkei music has grown to S6, the RTTY evitable by USB tuning, but that should not be necessary!

I search the UDXF iog on 6114 and only get possibly unrelated hits:

``LOG 4 to 6 MARS 2016 + RUSSIAN NAVY, SCHWEITZER ANDRE 07854 RCV : Russian Navy Sevastopol 1525z CIS-12/AT3004D/USB Encrypted messages – (QYT4 Mode Actived : RIR98 de RCV QYT4 ….) In Dx – Qsx 6114 (05Mar16) (F5JBR)

i.e. almost 6 years ago in France, first Russian navy log said to QSX = reply on 6114, and then a 6114 log itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2118)

International Radio Report - Special Christmas 2021 Edition

Some of you may know that I have been hosting and producing a weekly radio show here in Montreal on CKUT-90.3 FM since November 1987 called “The International Radio Report”. My co-host and friend on the show for several years now is Gilles Letourneau of Montreal, who you may be familiar with as the creator of the “OfficialSWLChannel” on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/officialswlchannel

Gilles and I have put together a special Christmas gift for all of our listeners, and all of you. It’s a 90-minutel Christmas edition of the International Radio Report available on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb9ifyvUy9I

It’s 90 minutes of radio history, comedy and heart warming stories from listeners that we truly hope you enjoy!

Happy Holidays from Gilles Letourneau and Sheldon Harvey, your co-hosts of the International Radio Report on CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal

Propagation News – 26 December 2021

Given that this report has to last two weeks it is difficult to be precise in terms of actual HF conditions. What we can say is that we are in turbulent times, with the solar flux index going up and down, and geomagnetic conditions subject to fluctuations as coronal holes and coronal mass ejections come and go.

The NOAA forecast for the next two weeks is that the solar flux index may reduce as we go past Christmas, initially to the 90s and ultimately to the 80s as we head towards the 28th December. NOAA also predicts we may have unsettled geomagnetic conditions on or around the 28th December, possible due to the return of a coronal hole and its associated high-speed solar wind stream. This is very much a guesstimate as this recent crop of sunspots arrived with very little warning. In other words, anything could happen over the next two weeks. At the time of writing there were two active regions on the Sun about to turn to be Earth-facing on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft imagery, but we will have to wait and see how they develop.

What we do know is that mid-Winter is the best time for low-band propagation, so keep an eye on Top Band, 80 metres and 40 metres, which can all show signs of DX activity from afternoon onwards at this time of year. Meanwhile, the higher bands have come into their own with the SFI above 100. If it continues, do check on 12 and 10 metres as they can provide the lowest D-layer absorption and best DX, with some real surprises every now and again. For example, 10m has given quite a few contacts into Australia recently. And 12m has shown good conditions into the mid-west of the USA in the late afternoon before sunset.

So until our regular bulletins start again in the New Year, have a very merry Christmas, a happy New Year and good DX.

And now the VHF and up propagation news:

The good tropo conditions just lasted until the 23cm UK Activity Contest last Tuesday, then a gradual advance of milder Atlantic air with weather fronts, rain and strong winds set the tone for the rest of the week.

The general thrust of the milder air is limited and a battle between cold air to the north and mild to the south will split the country in two over the Christmas weekend. There will be snow in some places for Santa and probably not a lot of VHF propagation to distract him! As a long shot, it can sometimes be productive to beam parallel to a weather front, in this case East to West.

In the week between Christmas and New Year there will be a period of calmer conditions with frosts and a weak ridge of high pressure; so a possible tropo window before the whole pattern returns to mild Atlantic unsettled conditions, but probably with snow on the leading edge.

Finally, to restate last week’s mention; this time of the year can produce surprising out of season Sporadic-E and, with some strong winter jet stream activity, it’s worth a look. Favoured options are to Spain on Boxing Day and more generally to the south and southeast in the second half of the week towards the end of the month. Of course, there’s always a chance of aurora and meteor scatter to keep you amused if the Sporadic-E doesn’t materialise.

The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks overnight from the 2nd of January to the 3rd and can produce a ZHR of 50-100 with some big fireballs. The peak of activity is extremely narrow, lasting only a few hours.

The Moon still has positive declination until the day after Boxing Day and perigee is on New Year’s day, bringing lowest path losses. This day also has high 144MHz sky noise so EME is a bit swings and roundabouts through the holiday period. (sgb.org)

** CUBA. 15140, Dec 22 at 2000, RHC continues in Spanish, what happened to English? Something`s always wrong at RHC. About today being ``dia del educador`` since 1961, and hyping Cuba as ``territorio libre --- de analfabetismo``, land free of illiteracy. Is this another lie? Venezuela also makes that claim --- then why are those the two least free countries in Latin America?

Then 2004 weather report from Dr. José Rubiera, https://www.cibercuba.com/noticias/2019-01-23-u164415-e164415-s27061-jose-rubiera-celebro-su-cumpleanos-72 including snow in Labrador, -14 in Calgary, also bits of US, Mexico, Central America and Caribbean predixions. ** OKLAHOMA. Checking out Part 15 FMs in Enid to go with Xmas Sound and Light shows, UT Dec 22 from 0017 past 0100, the two regular ones each year: Singing Xmas Trees, at the NE corner of Oakwood and Oak in an (ex?) oil field lot: 89.5 MHz, seems only three tunes looping: Chipmunx, Jingle Bells and I Wanna Hippopotamus for Xmas. Quite short range; we parked a little too far for full quieting, and it was hard to make out the ``worm`` along the fence.

In the Pheasant Run barrio, address hard to make out but maybe 5701 on that street, the usual house and trees with a longer stereo loop including Mannheim Steamroller and quiet carols alternating, on 94.9 MHz with greater range of a couple blox.

We did not find the third one in another neighborhood, but maybe this one on 95.1 which made the front page of the Dec 22 Eagle:

``Local light show brightens the holidays Kat Jeanne | Enid News & Eagle 21 hrs ago lightshowhouse

The Sudlow Family Light Show is on display at 2442 Edgewood Drive in Enid. (Photo provided)

An Enid family is putting on its fifth annual light show outside of their home with thousands of programmed lights and music.

The light show is at 2442 Edgewood Drive and runs 5:30-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. {CST = UT -6}

“On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, it is pretty packed outside of our house,” Ryan Sudlow said. “People will just line their cars up and down the street and stay and watch the program. The whole point of this is to make sure we have done our part to make people’s Christmases a little bit brighter.”... https://www.enidnews.com/news/local-light-show-brightens-the-holidays/article_bd17a9ea-62af-11ec-8f37-47a9e141a19c.html
