Propagation News – 28 June 2020
After the recent excitement of a new Solar Cycle 25 sunspot, it seems the Sun has decided to go back to sleep. We have had zero sunspots since 16 June and the STEREO spacecraft Ahead view shows just one small bright area on the Sun, which might result in a spot in due course. Luckily, geomagnetic conditions remained quiet throughout the week, with a maximum Kp index of two.
The bands were a little lacklustre, other than the continued sporadic E openings, which have brought almost daily fun on 28MHz.
There were F-layer openings to be found on 14MHz, but these were mainly enjoyed by well-equipped stations. Ed, WA6QDQ/KH6 in Hawaii was audible at 0652TUTC on Tuesday, the 23rd, at G3UML’s Hendon QTH. As was William, AL7KC in North Pole, Alaska, who had a big pile up on 14.224MHz.
Early morning does seem to be the best time to get on 14MHz, with Jim, E51JD on the South Cook Islands being reported again as well. But as the day goes on D-layer absorption grows and 14MHz doesn’t sound very lively at all. Fifteen metres was open to Brazil and Paraguay on Thursday afternoon, although this was mostly FT8. Otherwise, it was 10 metres and sporadic E contacts that continued to provide excitement, with one or two North American, South American and Caribbean openings occurring.
Next week NOAA predicts more of the same, with a solar flux index hovering around 68-70 and a maximum Kp index of two.
A weak solar wind stream flowing from a narrow coronal hole could reach Earth beginning on 27 June. A minor geomagnetic disturbance at higher latitudes may be expected.
VHF and up:
The heatwave of midweek should be over by this Sunday, so any enhanced sea path tropo will have weakened too. Coasts can be productive for ducts across the North Sea or English Channel and Biscay in any quieter settled window during the week.
Overall, tropo is probably not a mode to rely upon this week, since much of the time we will have low pressure either over the UK or very close by. This will bring periods of rain or showers, many of which could have a chance of thunder and hail. This implies large convective clouds and potentially good GHz bands rain scatter.
That leaves sporadic E, and we are still within the main part of the season, so keep up the usual procedure of checking mid-morning and late afternoon or early evening. Sporadic E is a mode ideally suited for weak signals and digital modes can give good clues as to which directions may open later for CW and SSB as the opening develops. Make use of the good map-based clusters to see if you are close enough to where the paths cross. Ideally the hot spot should be between about 600km and 1,400km away from your station.
Moon declination goes negative today but as perigee is on Monday, path losses will be at their lowest of the lunar month. 144MHz sky temperatures are low today but increasing to a peak of 2700K around midnight next Saturday. Compare this to the usual 300K cold sky temperature at 144MHz, do the maths and, you’ll see that your low noise preamps are not going to help you at this sky temperature!

The K7RA Solar Update
No sunspots were observed since June 15, when the daily sunspot number was 11. This does not mean there were 11 sunspots seen, but instead it means that one sunspot group was observed containing one sunspot. The sunspot number is derived by assigning 10 points for each sunspot group, and one point for each sunspot. So, 11 is the minimum non-zero sunspot number.
On June 8, the daily sunspot number was 17, indicating 7 sunspots in one group.
If those seven sunspots had been in two groups, the sunspot number would be reported as 27.
Last week’s bulletin ARLP025 reported average daily sunspot number of 7.9, and of course with no sunspots, this week that number dropped to zero.
Average daily solar flux declined from 70 to 67.7.
The sun has gone quiet again, as Spaceweather.com reported this week.
Geomagnetic indicators are still quiet, but the average planetary A index rose from 3.9 to 4.6 and the average middle latitude A index rose from 4.9 to 5.6. These values are insignificant.
Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is 69 on June 26 through July 3, 70 on July 4-12, 68 on July 13-25, 70 on July 26 through August 8 and 68 on August 9.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on June 26, 8 on June 27, 5 on June 28 through July 3, then 8, 5, 8 and 8 on July 4-7, 5 on July 8-30, then 8, 5, 8 and 8 again on July 31 through August 3, and 5 on August 4-9.

Some operators don’t realize that Field Day has only minimal logging requirements, just submit a list or dupe sheet for each band/mode showing the calls of the stations worked, and a summary sheet. There is no requirement to log the time of each contact, or even record the section or any report from stations you work. Amigos de la Onda Corta es un programa de Radio Exterior de España dedicado a las telecomunicaciones y a los oyentes de emisoras de Onda Corta (SW) que tienen como pasatiempo o dedicación especial la captación de las señales de las emisoras extranjeras y el envío de controles de escucha. El desarrollo de las Tecnologías de la Información y de la Comunicación.
Es un programa semanal, que dirige y presenta Antonio Buitrago.

LA CLONACIÓN DE VOZ
En el sector audiovisual se está llevando a cabo una revolución tecnológica obligada sobre todo por la búsqueda de soluciones a las diferentes necesidades de la industria. La empresa Vicomtech, con sede en el País Vasco (San Sebastián), por ejemplo, ha desarrollado una tecnología para el procesamiento del habla y del lenguaje natural cuyo resultado final ha sido la clonación de una voz. Para ello se necesitan audios para generar un modelo de síntesis del habla que reproduzcan las particularidades, matices y estilo de la voz que se quiere imitar. Hablamos con Aitor Álvarez, responsable de Tecnologías del Habla en Vicomtech.
POR TRES RAZONES
Durante la declaración de estado de alarma, que redujo al mínimo la movilidad en los pueblos y ciudades y nos confinó a gran parte de los españoles en casa, el ruido habitual en calles y avenidas dejó de sonar para dar paso al silencio y a la presencia de otros sonidos que pasaban desapercibidos.

I have a short update on our schedule to East Africa and Kashmir. Although languages used in these broadcasts may be somehow unusual to most of our listeners, we are very interested in receiving reception reports for these additional broadcasts, especially from listeners in the target areas:
i.) 11990 kHz (250 kW) from 1630-1730 UTC on Mon, Wed & Sat to East Africa in Oromo language (*)
ii.) 7355 kHz (150 kW) from 03:30-04:30 UTC on Sunday to Kashmir in Kashmiri (**)

Ulis Fleming reports to the WOR iog June 23: ``Radio Verdad has (had?) a nice 7th harmonic on 28385 kHz in the 10 meter amateur radio band that is audible here in Maryland when the MUF is there or E-Skip going on. I have used it as a beacon to Central America. Good luck! Ulis``
Harmonic from TGAV? A new one on me. Must look out for 28385. I don`t recall any lower ones ever reported, which would likely radiate more power, but they all fall way-out-of-band, like the fundamental, so could escape notice. Since X 7 is odd, the other *odds X 3 and X 5 may be more likely than the evens. Vigilate: 8110, *12165, 16220, *20275, 24330. Should turn them loose like Vanuatu?
Also, Chuck Gessner, W3ON tells us June 23, ``I received a nice email from Dr. Edgar Madrid, who operates the 'Radio Verdad', Chiquimula short wave radio station in Guatemala on 4055 kHz. It operates mostly during the daylight hours in Guatemala but can be heard prior to local U.S. sunrise, then fade out. Then again from our U.S. sunset through the darkness hours in the U.S. He reported that the COVID19 virus has not affected people in Chiquimula, although most are staying home. He reported that it took four months for my early January letter to reach him. He further reported that
"Radio Verdad has not ceased operation, except that we sometimes operate automatically, mostly by night. We are transmitting to some countries with 'Radio Truth International' too. We are now in the effort to send our signal to the United States with all power. I expect your report whenever you pick up Radio Truth with a very strong signal, which does not require antennas. It may be very soon. I am receiving reports from Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil with our new strong signal already. We are struggling to make all that possible. May God be with you and take care of your good health.
