The norvegian DAB fiasco will become a major political issue
Experience so far leaves no doubt that the closure of the FM network and the introduction of DAB is a tragedy for the Norwegian people. The Storting parliamentarian and media spokesperson for the Center Party, Ã…slaug Sem-Jacobsen, writes this in response to Frp (Progress Party) Thorleif Fluer Vikre, in a debate article published in several regional newspapers in Norway. Before joining Stortinget Sem-Jacobsen was employed by the public broadcaster NRK.
Vikre, vice president of Frp Vestfold and Telemark district, regards the closing of FM networks as a big mistake, which is confirmed by the fact that radio listening is down. Frp was the only party against national FM switch-off. Vikre therefore believes it is positive that Sem-Jacobsen and the Center Party now is critical about this digitization.
It is true that a broad majority voted for digitizing the radio medium in connection with the processing of Report. 8 (2010-2011), including the Center Party. Let me remind Vikre and Frp that when the Storting adopted the introduction of DAB technology, it was under certain conditions. One of these was that DAB should have equivalent coverage as the FM network before FM was phased out. Furthermore, it was emphasized that a number of political and social considerations had to be taken care of in connection with the digitization. Freedom of expression, ownership, emergency preparedness, access to information, population coverage, as well as ensuring users access reasonable and good services, she writes in her reply to Vikre.
She believes that the experience so far has shown that the closure of the FM network and the introduction of DAB is a tragedy for the Norwegian people. She points out that the Center Party 2016 made proposals in the Storting to postpone the closure of FM. The proposal was subsequently rejected, also by Frp.
Sem-Jacobsen reacts when Vikre claims that the Center Party has woken up afterwards. He does not mention that the Storting decided to introduce DAB under certain circumstances, and that the Center Party proposed to postpone FM switch-off 2016 due to serious shortcomings with DAB. Experience revealed that coverage was not satisfactory and that listeners did not get any added value. Frp then had a golden opportunity to support our proposal, which they did not.
She hopes that Frp in the government will do something about the DAB scandal, which Vikre writes. And with it, it is possible to have the Minister of Culture investigate the DAB case more thoroughly than its predecessors from the Høyre. This involves, inter alia, providing a proper factual database with real DAB listening figures. It is untenable that the government does not comply with the assumptions underlying DAB's adoption in 2011, Åslaug Sem-Joaconsen concludes her article.

The K7RA Solar Update
A single small sunspot appeared on July 21, then disappeared. Before that, no sunspots appeared since June 26. The daily sunspot number on July 21 was 11, which is the minimum non-zero sunspot number.
Because there were no sunspots over the previous week, average daily sunspot numbers increased from 0 to 1.6, while average daily solar flux for the week declined from 71.8 to 68.4.
Average daily planetary A index changed from 6.4 to 8.1, and average daily mid-latitude A index (measured in Virginia) increased from 6.1 to 8.
Predicted solar flux is much lower than recently expected. Expected flux values (based on the July 26 prediction) are 66 on July 27 through August 2, 67 on August 3, 68 on August 4-10, 70 on August 11-18, 68 on August 19 through September 6, and 70 on September 7-9.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on July 27-31, 18 and 8 August 1-2, 5 on August 3-11, 8 on August 12-13, 5 on August 14-15, then 7, 12, 5, 10, 25 and 15 on August 16-21, then 10 on August 22-23, 8 on August 24-25, 5 on August 26 through September 7, and 8 on September 8-9.

Jeff N8II in West Virginia wrote on July 24: "It has been a thrilling and bit exhausting last 3 days with 10-meter multi-hop sporadic E openings to Europe late Saturday morning, the 21st, and both morning and late afternoon/evening Sunday and Monday! I can’t remember such consistent European openings on Es any year and the odds are even more against it being a month after the summer solstice. I got to the radio late Saturday morning past 1500Z and I suspect the band had been open to Europe for a while already. Over less than 2 hours, I worked 23 Europeans and two stations in Africa. Most of the Europeans were in Mediterranean area countries such as Spain, France, and Italy. I also worked three stations in Germany, England, and the Czech Republic. Besides those contacts, I heard over 10 Spanish stations working each other in a contest on CW. I worked the following new DXCC band slots, IS0 in Sardinia, S01WS in Western Sahara, and probably 7V5D Algeria (weak). In the evening, I made six double-hop contacts with California, and several single hops into Texas and Missouri.
“Sunday, I was on earlier probably about the time the band was opening. There were at least two Spanish stations still working their contest and EA4URE gave me a signal report. I made seven European contacts, most with Germany and most signals were weak. I also found LZ2HR on CW in Bulgaria with a S7 signal for a new band slot. I also worked PJ2Y in Curacao, probably via Es. By 2112Z, the band was open again and I was working Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary (HA9RT loud), and new band slots with Z68M Kosovo, and 9A2EU Croatia. I now have worked Kosovo, our newest DXCC entity, on all bands from 80 through 10 meters on CW, and four bands on SSB this year. I also worked Lauro, IK4GRO (loud), in Italy, as well as Tonno, ES5TV, in Estonia (quite a surprise) – both on SSB.
“Today, Monday, I made it to the radio at 1350Z and notice that there was a good European to European opening and, later, and opening from Europe to the Middle East. After a CW contact with England and a hello to Ian, MM0TFU, who always seems to be there when there is transatlantic Es, I started CQing and had a run of 16 stations from Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Austria, Italy, France, and Germany. Then it was off to mostly search for DX on CW, working HB0/PC5A in Liechtenstein, and HA9RT in Hungary (loud as usual). But by far the most amazing event was hearing HZ1TT in Saudi Arabia running European stations, about 1/3 of which I could hear! I didn’t contact HZ1TT, (I have worked 7Z1SJ in past years), but it was amazing to hear his S1-4 solid copy signal for over 10 minutes. In fact, this was a first for me to hear Es into the Arabian Peninsula on 10 meters. At 1946Z, I returned to work Tony, T77C, in San Marino (a new band slot). On SSB, I worked stations in France, Italy (some over S9), Germany, Portugal, Austria, and Spain. At around 21Z on CW, I found E79D in Bosnia and CT3MD in Madeira Islands (S9) for new band slots."
When asked about six meters, on July 24 he wrote: "Oh, yes, quite a few openings to Europe, Texas and the Midwest. When I heard HZ1TT, there was a 9K2 working Europe on 6 meters. Most of my 6-meter DX is worked via FT8 on 50313 kHz, which allows decoding about 18-20 dB BELOW the noise level. There is halfway decent 10-meter SSB and CW activity also when 6 meters is open. I have not worked Europe since Monday on 10 meters, but the reports of Es were very minimal on Wednesday."

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.
Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 66.4 66.2 66.2
There had been 5 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of less than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 5 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 116 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
There was no earth facing sunspot group(s).
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 1 1 2 1 0 1.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between
484 & 400 km/s.

Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,
6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,
13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,
21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,
24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,
6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,
13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,
21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,
24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

2025-1805 UT until the end of 2018. The transmission will be stopped at
0600-0900 UT on Tuesdays for transmitter maintenance.
The main target area is North China, but expected to be audible in all over
China. The transmitter of 6030 kHz has originally 100 kW of power, but the
power is reduced to 30 kW in DRM transmission mode. There will be
temporarily stop of the transmission.

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.
Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 66.4 (((((65.8))))) 65.9
(((((The 65.8 figure is the lowest so far in the decline of solar cycle 24
and the lowest in the approximately the past 10 years.)))))
There had been 4 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of less than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 4 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 115 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
There was no earth facing sunspot group(s).
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition of 3 3 2 1 1 1 1 2.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between
559 & 467 km/s.

S4-7 at day,

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,
6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,
13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,
21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.
All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.
All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

** GUAM. 12040, UT Tuesday July 24 at 2201, ``Jesus Walked on H2O`` song at S2-S4, 2205 talk about fish courtship dances (?), 2205 Adventist World Radio ID in passing. Such is the diverse programming presented by the Adv. sect of Christianity. In Aoki/NDXC, KSDA is scheduled 2200-2230 in English on days 2/4/7 = Mon/Wed/Sat, and Sundanese the other days! Someone is mixed up, probably displaying *local* days in the FE, rather than UT days properly to match the times. If English is really on UT Sun/Tue/Fri, that could make it possible for `Wavescan` to be on this transmission Sundays, but I doubt it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1940 monitoring: first airing confirmed Tuesday July 24 from 2330:15 on WBCQ, 9330v, fair-good. I was a bit concerned when BS was still running past 2329 when WBCQ normally cuts to own ID and giving promo, but came on a few seconds late. This could be the only instance WBCQ will air WOR at 2330; you never know, following Allan`s initial decision to run it every day.
Also confirmed Wednesday July 25 at 1030 on WRMI 5950, when unfortunately I am awake after a nightmare knocking the bedside YB-400 off its easel; only poor pre-sunrise despite aimed thisaway.
Also confirmed Wednesday July 25 from *2103, WRMI cutting 9955 on late so JIP WOR: it`s fair S8-S9, but loud & clear on webcast, an improvement over last week`s SNAFUs. Simultaneously probably started on time 2100 via WBCQ 7490v but a JBA carrier. It too is L&C on webcast checked at 2110, just a few words ahead of WRMI. Next:
