** CANADA [and non]. 351 kHz, Jan 4 at 0629 UT, beacon YKQ and dash. 500 watts from Fort Rupert-Waskaganish, Quebec. That`s at the far SE corner inlet of James Bay, east of the Ontario border. (Does James Bay have a First Nations name?)

At same time tuned to 351, I am also hearing IN at a much different pitch, which is really on 353 at International Falls MN, previously logged.

** CUBA. 15311.6 & 14968.4, Jan 4 at 1514, JBA carriers from the plus/minus 171.6 kHz spurs out of 15140 RHC; strangely, nothing now from the inner pair previously heard slightly stronger circa 15283 & 14997. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13766, Jan 4 at 1539, RHC-FM spur out of 13700-AM is VG S9+10; first one hit was the next one up as I tuned down, 13834 with the F# tone marring the music, but the closest ones are otherwise almost clear; then also found at further plus/minus 65-67 kHz intervals: 13898 S6-S7; 13962 S5; 14035-trace; 13634 S9; 13567 S9; 13501 S3; 13435-trace. The lower ones confront CODAR swishes. Something`s always wrong at RHC. The RHC FM service is back in force today, other days completely absent (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUAM. 12040.01 approx., UT Thu Jan 3 at 2214, praise music, into ``Jesus 101`` in English, S9+10. Despite good signal here, it`s KSDA, 100 kW at 255 degrees, English days 135, Sundanese days 2467 per HFCC and Aoki; EiBi says English on days 247, Sundanese days 1356. For Aoki, day 1 = Sunday, for EiBi, day 1 = Monday; For HFCC, day 1 = Sunday. So Thursday is either day 4 or day 5. And of course, in the FE target, it`s the *next* local morning already. As my head reels, each listing appears to be correct by strict UT days. Too bad they don`t all calculate the same way (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9380, Jan 4 at 2231, no signal from AIR National Channel, but some JBA RTTY. 15 hours earlier, Jose Jacob informed the dx_india yg that AIR had suddenly cancelled the overnight National Channel, also deleting megawatt MW 1566 (which North American MW DXers had previously pointed out was no longer being heard; off or QRP?), and 20 kW 1215. Mauno Ritola was still hearing all three at 1855 today via Delhi remote. Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria, still had 9380 at 2050 Jan 4. 9380 sked had been 1320-0040 UT. One more 9380 check here at 0022 UT Jan 5: Nothing.

** IRAN. 7305, Jan 3 at 1834, very poor talk in unID language. HFCC shows it`s IRIB in Sqi = Albanian, 500 kW, 320 degrees from Sirjan. Notable because this is 2 minutes after local mean noon near the shortest day of the year, one of few broadcast signals on band --- just with 7375 Romania, q.v., no North Americans on now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. We had light snow and freezing rain yesterday and overnight, not enough to break wires or trees, but a ``winter wonderland`` thru the sunshine. Temp going up into the high 40s, and tropo is enhanced; as of 15 UT Jan 4, Bill Hepburn`s maps show a Level-2 oval from SW to NE OK, surrounded by a greater Level-1 oval from NW TX to SW MO, with Enid on the edge. Despite my damaged antenna aimed toward OKC, from 1602 to 1610 UT I bandscan to find, the only DX decodes:

RF 20, KQCW Muskogee, 19-1 as CW, but *no* 19-2 any more which W9WI.com lists as ThisTV

RF 42, KBZC-LD ``Enid`` which is really in OKC and normally invisible, with 7 subchannels, [brackets as listed by W9WI.com; screen positions denote visible bugs; PSIP ID on all of them the same: KBZC-LD]:

BAD signals on the meter: 50, 47, 46, 45, 34, 33, 30, 28, 26, 24, 21, 11, 10. Most correlate with Tulsa market, like KQCW-20. Note that some of these are OKC channels which are being blocked by DX QRM: 50, 46, 33, 24! From listings one could only guess some LDs or translators elsewhere in OK might be responsible. Or for ch 50, K50JG 19 kW, Independence KS, relaying TBN KDOR Bartlesville (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 7375, Jan 3 at 1839, YL talk sounds like Romanian, S5-S7. Yes, RRI in Romanian scheduled 18-21, 300 kW, 285 degrees from Galbeni. One of two extracontinental signals reaching here on band a few minutes after local mean noon on one of the shortest days in the year; the other, IRAN 7305, q.v. Algeria via France is also listed at 18-20 on 7375, but aimed SSE, so not heard here? Must be colliding over there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 12034.901, Jan 4 at 1549, JBA carrier with flutter. HFCC shows AWR in Marathi, 125 kW, 345 degrees at 1530-1600. Yes, Trincomalee is another of those sites we can depend on for offfrequenciness; but Wolfgang Bueschel says some of their transmitters are accurate (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 15490, Fri Jan 4 at 1945-1950+ on caradio, good but deep fades, African language mentions Nigeria frequently. HFCC shows it`s a new Hausa broadcast from BBC via ASCension just started January 3 at 1930-2000 (Fridays extended to 2030; also new: French at 1800-1830). For some other reason I have 15490 in the BST-1 memory bank; must have been something more interesting in a previous season. And in fact, checking some HFCC from this December, these are *not* new transmissions, yet re-registered with exactly same parameters effective Jan 3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Checking WRMI skedgrids Jan 4 to update DX/SWL/MEDIA PROGRAMS, I spot a couple more new airings of WORLD OF RADIO: the only way I can find out about them. Unfortunately, not in time to confirm them by monitoring this week: UT Thursday 0100 on 7780; and Thursday 2100 on 7780 & 5950. The latter is very confusing, since at 2100, 7780 is *also* scheduled to carry RAE in German M-F. And the transmission grid atop also says that on Thursdays only, VORW instead at this hour! I can only check what`s happening with both on Friday January 4 during the 21-22 hour, at 2125: 7780 is indeed in German; 5950 is // 9395 with music, presumably Oldies. More certain WOR airings next:

** U S A. 15555-USB, Jan 3 at 1512, gospel huxter JBA, pennywhistle WJHR, FL. This one is so seldom heard (or active?), that it`s a significant catch when it is. Vatican much stronger on 15550 where WJHR had jumped in early Dec (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12050, Jan 4 at 1547, WEWN open carrier, off and on, then adds Spanish modulation but off again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 17725.059, Jan 3 at 2206, OSOB is a JBA carrier with Doppler flutter. Nothing listed now in latest HFCC, Aoki/NDXC or EiBi (except HFCC has a probably imaginary UAE registration at 12-14 only). Certainly behaving like a real signal. 16m is normally dead here in afternoons, except maybe 17775 KVOH before it close, evenso often JBA. At this hour one would only expect something from east Asia, but off-frequency correlates with UAE (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

All India Radio to shut down national channel, regional academies in 5 cities to cut costs

It has been decided by Prasar Bharati to close down the national channel of AIR and RABMs located at Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram with immediate effect.

Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has decided to close down All India Radio’s national channel and its regional training academies in five cities as part of “cost-cutting measures” and to “rationalise” services.

The programme, technical, ministerial and other staff posted at National Channel in Todapur and Nagpur etc, apart from those working at Regional Academies of Broadcasting and Multimedia (RABMs) in five cities, may be posted as per the requirement of the organisation, said the order issued by the Directorate General, All India Radio (AIR).

In order to “rationalise AIR services and keeping in view of the cost-cutting measures”, it has been decided by Prasar Bharati and communicated to DG AIR on December 24, 2018, to close down the national channel of AIR and RABMs located at Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram with immediate effect, it said.

The order, dated January 3, stated that the programmes of archival value maintained by national channel should be sent to the central archives in Delhi for digitisation and preservation for posterity.

The national channel, which broadcasts from 6PM to 6 AM, came up in 1987 and played an important role in keeping people abreast with national issues, an AIR source said.

“National channel has a huge repository of programmes and the personnel will now be redeployed,” the source said.

It is understood that certain sections within AIR are not happy with the decision as they believe that the national channel was an important part of the broadcasts and there were other ways to cut costs than shutting it down altogether.

“These days you can livestream, you can make it an application-based service, there are many other ways of cost-cutting. The effort should have been to strengthen national channel and not close it down,” a source said.

The K7RA Solar Update

Sunspots returned with the New Year, with sunspot numbers of 13, 16 and 16 on January 1-3. The new region was AR2732, and the area of the spot tripled each day, beginning at 10 millionths of the visible solar disc, then tripling to 30 on Tuesday, and 90 on Wednesday. This made the average daily sunspot number for the reporting week (December 27 to January 2) 4.1, compared to zero for the previous seven days.

Average daily solar flux rose slightly from 70 to 70.4.

Average daily planetary A index rose from 4.9 to 9.3, and average mid-latitude A index from 4 to 7.6.

Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is 72 on January 4-5, 70 on January 6-11, 71 on January 12-19, 69 on January 20 through February 2, 71 on February 3-15, and 69 on February 16-17.

Predicted planetary A index is 15, 24, 15 and 8 on January 4-7, 5 on January 8-9, 10 on January 10, 5 on January 11-15, 12 on January 16, 5 on January 17-23, then 20, 12, 12 and 10 on January 24-27, 5 on January 28-30, 12 on January 31, then 15, 15 and 8 on February 1-3, 5 on February 4-11, 12 on February 12, and 5 on February 13-17.

Jon Jones, N0JK, of Lawrence, Kansas wrote on January 3: "After a relatively lackluster December for sporadic-E, conditions improved at the end of December on to the first few days of the New Year.

“I had 6-meter Es December 28 to Canada, and the 29th to the southeast states. Logged several stations running just 10 watts on SSB.

“But the real DX took place on January 2, 2019. Six meters opened for sporadic-E around 1700z across North America and stayed open late into the evening. Around 2330z, Es links to afternoon trans-equatorial propagation across the geomagnetic equator set up an opening between North America and Australia.

“VK3OT, VK3DUT, VK4MA and others appeared suddenly on the JT65 and FT8 modes on 50 MHz. VK4MA worked east to Illinois on FT8. Larry, N0LL (EM09) decoded VK3OT and VK3DUT on JT65. He worked NH6Y on FT8. I copied one decode on NH6Y on FT8. The Hawaiian stations made contacts in Texas, Mississippi and the Rocky Mountain states.

“The ‘winter surprise’ North-America-to-VK/ZL openings have taken place in past years, with one of the occurring in late December 2015, but to occur with a solar flux of only 70 is remarkable.  Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA discussed the mechanism of these openings in a column he wrote for the World Radio magazine." 

Mike Schaffer, KA3JAW, of Easton, Pennsylvania regularly monitors the FM broadcast band for interesting openings. “On Friday, December 28, 2018 at 5:49 pm EST (2249 UTC), I was monitoring the FM broadcast band on 88.3 MHz and started to hear Spanish music, then when the music ended a male announcer. The signal, which was weak for roughly thirty seconds vaporized, being taken over by a mix from WRAU in Ocean City, Maryland (50 kW), and WPPB in Southampton, New York (25 kW). The unidentified station’s announcer sounded Cuban, which would be near 1274 miles to the south.

“While watching the DXMAPS website, spots were starting to come in on 6-meter SSB via Es from Massachusetts to Alabama, a 1154-mile path, at 2349 UTC.

“On December 29 at 0005 UTC, I picked up a 6-meter CW beacon from Maine to Manitoba, Canada, over 1315-mile path.

“By 0018 UTC, the MUF climbed up to 72 MHz above FN04 (Barrie, Ontario, Canada).

“Then, the unexpected happened. There were reports of 6-meter FT8 signals from Massachusetts to New Mexico over a 2133-mile path, which was double-hop Es event at 0032 UTC.

“At 0037 UTC MUF shot up to 95 MHz above EN92 (London, Ontario, Canada).

“There was a report of brief Es in the FM broadcast band from near Williamsport, Pennsylvania (FN11) to various stations south of Miami, Florida (EL95) up to 1118 miles away at 0055 UTC.

“Forty-five minutes later, analog television channel 6 was observed, likely from Cuba. Now the western panhandle of Florida to the lower Hudson Bay-James Bay, Canada was coming in on FT8 with the MUF stabilizing at 95 MHz on a 1572-mile path at 0100 UTC with FT8 mode.

“By this time at 0115 UTC I expected the MUF to begin crashing down into the HF bands. Nope – it rose 4 MHz higher to 99 MHz. By 0158 UTC the phenomenon peaked with a report of a weak analog television channel 2, CHBX in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (EN76) detected in Akron, OH (EN91) via short-hop sporadic-e at 406 miles.” 

Jeff, N8II, of West Virginia wrote on December 29: "The only ray of sunshine Christmas week was some long path into Australia on 30 and 40-meter CW and Japan on 40-meter SSB and CW. It had been nearly 2 years since my last contacts with Japan on 40 meters outside of contests, and I failed to work any in this year's CQWW competition as well.

“The propagation conditions changed dramatically on the 29th (UTC) when there was widespread sporadic E just in time for the Radio Amateurs of Canada Winter Contest. I ran all 6 bands within 4 minutes with VE9HF in New Brunswick and worked several VE3s on 20 meters and many on 40 meters in the 0100Z hour, along with many USA stations. Some of the US stations were at very short distances in the 1/2/3/4/5/8/9th call areas on 40-meter SSB.

“Ten meters was open to W4/5 with lots of activity. On Saturday morning 20-meters was open to Europe as usual as well as Eastern Canada, and by 1500Z to western Canada as well with lots of Manitoba and Saskatchewan activity. On 15-meter CW, I worked Slovenia, France, and England. While on the band I also worked stations in the W5/6/7/0 call areas, Quebec and Ontario on backscatter, and made contacts into Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia." 

Jeff Howington, AD0AK, of Fairfax, Iowa sent this on December 29: "Regarding Al, W1VTP's, inquiry in your 28-December bulletin, the Australian Space Weather Services has a web page at https://bit.ly/2sbceum that might better address his needs. It provides Hourly Area Prediction (HAP) charts containing easy to understand graphical MUF (foF5) data for various locations. Al can select the Boston map from the pull-down list.

“That map typically shows roughly concentric rings centered on Boston that are color coded to indicate the maximum usable frequency a Boston base station should use to reach a mobile at various distances. It's not a stretch to mentally re-center the rings to Al's station in Manchester to give an idea of where his signal will go from that location. Note that these maps are good only for one hour and are refreshed on the hour.

I've used the HAP map centered on Kansas City with good success while running a NVIS net in the Midwest Region. Since nearly all nets are fixed in the frequencies they use, these maps can help select the best times to run the net, and they can also provide information as to which stations can best serve as relays to net control assuming you know their locations."

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” W4HM Daily HF-MF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast.

It’s the only accurate daily global HF-MF radio wave propagation forecast produced on the planet.

I'm a heliophysicist, terrestrial/troposphere meteorologist/climatologist, physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In terrestrial/troposphere weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century. Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were

73.9 72.6 72.4.

There had been 3 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index number (SFI) above 70.

Unfortunately daily SFI numbers in the 70’s doesn’t increase ionization via ultraviolet light striking the F2 layer to raise the maximum usable frequency (MUF) high enough to activate the 15, 12 and 10 meter bands.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 16.

In 2019 there had been 3 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN) greater than 0.

In 2018 there had been 221 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN) of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a quiet geomagnetic condition of

0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0.

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged between

5 & 0,

which had been at a quiet geomagnetic condition.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum Disturbance Storm Time Index (Dst) ranged between

-4 & +15 nT.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed was

362 & 298 km/s.

GLOBAL (HF) HIGH FREQUENCY (3000-30000 KHZ) RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION CONDITIONS EXPECTED-

HF-MF radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jan 4, 2019- steady.

HF-MF radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jan 5, 2019- minor deterioration.

HF-MF radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jan 6, 2019- minor to moderate deterioration.

Northern Hemisphere HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

We are now in the winter season northern hemisphere HF-MF radio wave propagation season.
The approximate 11000- 30000 kHz frequency range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher than in the southern hemisphere as the F layer of the ionosphere is lower in height and the ions more concentrated.
The approximately 3000-10000 kHz frequency range often stays open for DX all throughout the day due to a weaker D and E layer and therefore less RF signal absorption.
Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

Southern Hemisphere HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

We are now in the summer season southern hemisphere HF-MF radio wave propagation season.

The 14000- 30000 kHz frequency range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere is higher and the layer ions less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-29700 kHz frequency ranges will open via short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial propagation (TEP).

This HF-MF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP HF-MF radio wave propagation prediction software.
I wrote it beginning in the late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it still can’t be distributed to the general public. It does outperform VOA CAP and Prop Lab.
I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF-MF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

The MF broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 50,000 watts (50 kw) and an omnidirectional vertical antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF-MF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

THE FOLLOWING IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR, SPACE, GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND IONOSPHERE GOINGS ON. ALSO HF AND MF RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION CONDITIONS AND FORECASTING.
Globally HF-MF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the HF-MF radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2019 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency (HF) radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens only rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL MF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

Medium frequency (300-3000 khz) radio wave propagation conditions are impacted in a negative manner not by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to energetic electron flux levels at energies greater than 2 MeV (2+1), geomagnetic disturbances (Kp-3-4) and geomagnetic storms (Kp-5 & >) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the general altitude of the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D layer signal absorption due to elevated background solar flux levels greater than A0, proton flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0), hard x-rays and galactic cosmic rays.
There is also the issue of magneto ionic power coupling. Antenna polarization plays a large role in the success of a long haul MF DX contact. As a MF RF signal traverses Earth's magnetic lines of force in a perpendicular manner on high and mid latitude paths say between W3 land and SM, higher angle horizontally polarized signals are more readily absorbed than lower angle vertically polarized signals. On other propagation paths on the globe opposite results can be found, i.e., horizontally polarized signals suffer less absorption on a propagation path between VK6 and W6 or S9 and W4.
Unfortunately the simplest way to look at medium frequencies with respect to radio wave propagation conditions is to accept the fact that propagation is poor the majority of the time, especially past approximately 1250 miles (one maximum distance refraction off of the E layer), with occasional short-lived good periods as far as 3200 miles.
All 13 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to see the best global medium frequency (MF) radio wave propagation possible.
The simplest way to look at medium frequencies (MF) with respect to radio wave propagation conditions is to accept the fact that propagation is poor the majority of the time, especially past approximately 1250 miles (one refraction off of the E layer), with occasional short-lived good periods as far as 3200 miles.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number under 100, under 70 best.
3.) A daily sunspot number no higher then the 100 for routine stable formation of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic proton flux levels no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels of A0 for several days consecutively.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

11.) Galactic cosmic rays decrease to -3 units below zero and trending towards zero.
12.) Energetic electron flux levels no greater than 2 MeV (2+0).
13. A solar wind speed of less than 300 km/s for several days consecutively.
