Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.
Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In
terrestrial weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar,
space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

the point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were
69.3 68.9 67.8.
There had been 16 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (SFI) below 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 24 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 189 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
active to quiet geomagnetic condition of
1 0 1 2 1 3 3 4.
The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between
22 & 2,
which had been at an active to quiet geomagnetic condition.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum Disturbance Storm Time Index (Dst)
ranged between
-41 & -12 nT.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed was 481 & 381 km/s.

We are now in the fall/spring equinox type of HF radio wave propagation
conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly
balanced across the equator during the fall and spring equinox.
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.
This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.
All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

There had been 24 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 189 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
active to quiet geomagnetic condition of

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.
This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

The K7RA Solar Update
At 2244 UTC on November 7 the Australian Space Forecast Centre issued a geomagnetic disturbance warning due to a co-rotating interaction region ahead of a coronal hole high speed solar wind stream on November 9-10. Active geomagnetic conditions are predicted for November 9 and unsettled to active conditions on November 10.
We saw another week with no sunspots, and the average daily solar flux softened from 68.6 to 67.7. Average planetary A index rose from 4.4 to 12, while average mid-latitude A index went from 3.4 to 8.1. On November 5 the planetary A index rose to 35, while Alaska’s college A index went to 44, indicating disturbed conditions.
Predicted planetary A index from USAF and NOAA is milder than the Australian prediction, with the outlook for November 9-13 at 16, 18, 12, 14, and 10, then 5 on November 14-24, and 8 on November 25, 5 on November 26-30, then 15, 20, 12 and 8 on December 1-4, 5 on December 5-6, then 15 and 12 on December 7-8, and 5 on December 9-23.
Predicted solar flux is 70 on November 9-12, 68 on November 13-16, 69 on November 15, 70 on November 16-17, 69 on November 18-19, 68 on November 20 through December 8, 70 on December 9-14, 69 on December 15-16 and 68 on December 17-23.

Bruce Smith, AC4G in Tennessee sent this on November 2: "Just wanted to share an exciting contact I had on 23 October at around 2230z. I was tuning 80-meter CW when suddenly, I heard a CQ. Following the greyline, I used my beverage antennas to contact VK9XG. I switched from the northeast beverage to the southeast and heard the CQs at 559 and made the contact, putting a new band country in the logbook.
“A day or so later, while tuning through 160 meters at approximately 1205z, I heard my first Christmas Island signals with a report of 539. Several North American stations were calling, causing some confusion as they transmitted while VK9 transmitted, but it was still very exciting to hear them on Top Band. Their signals faded at 1223z.”
“I should have stated that this was a long-path reception using my vertical for my transmit antenna."

Mike Treister, W9NY of Chicago, sent this report last week regarding the CQ World Wide SSB DX Contest: "Despite reports of no sunspots, DX stations were plentiful during the contest, sometimes with signals above S9 at my Dune Acres, Indiana location. And with a TH7 antenna aiming toward Europe, I had South Americans calling me off the back of the beam. I think that 15 meters must often be open when it sounds completely dead. This CQ Worldwide contest was a perfect example. I worked over 70 countries just on 15!”

Guess what, the latest WRMI skedgrid checked Nov 9 at 1657 shows that Jeff White and sidekix Anonymous Axolotl (? vanished before I could copy spelling) and Anonymous Quagga have removed RN,K completely from the sked leaving 11580 blank 24 hours to Africa.
Reactivated Ivo had uncovered more relays of this via ISSoudun, France, including 17690 at 11-15 UT, but nothing audible there at 1415; Europe surely propagating poorly anyway, tho the Saudi trio 17895/17705/17615- are detectable. However, Wolfgang Bueschel was hearing RN,K via ISS Nov 9 at 0555 on 7335, while overrun Cuban jamming blox it here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

There continues to be a dearth of info on what *programming* is on these DRMs, and what kind of *data* is also being transmitted, even among DRM enthusiasts, who don`t seem to care about content. BBC and UK taxpayers should fund Manx Radio, Tynwald report recommends
Manx Radio should in future largely be paid for by the BBC and UK government, a Tynwald committee has recommended.
The station is currently jointly funded by the Manx Treasury and advertising.
The committee's "first preference" would be for Manx Radio to be financed by the BBC, UK taxpayers, or both.
The station's managing director Anthony Pugh said he was worried the Manx government wanted too much say over the station's future, while the BBC said it "noted" the report and would study it.
The report, examining the future of public service media provision on the island, makes 11 recommendations that will be considered by the Manx parliament next month.
Its authors suggest the Manx government "pursue negotiations with the UK and BBC" aimed at securing one of three outcomes, in the following order of preference:
- An increase in financial support for Manx Radio "sufficient to provide high quality public service radio... and other media" without the need for "cross-subsidy from commercial income... and substantial financial support from the Isle of Man Government"
- For the BBC to supply enough "high quality locally produced news and other public service content" for use on all platforms by Manx Radio so as to avoid the need for commercial income or Manx government support
- For the BBC to set up a radio station for the Isle of Man "similar to those operating in Jersey and Guernsey" which would allow Manx Radio's public service obligations "to be dismantled" with the removal of public funding
Were agreement not to be reached, the report's "final fallback option" suggests scrapping the licence fee on the Isle of Man and the simultaneous "release of the BBC from any obligation to provide services to the island".
Such a move would "keep some £4.8m per year in the island" and "allow the island to exercise for the first time true self-determination in relation to public service broadcasting".
One of the report's authors, Alex Allinson MHK, told the BBC there was a "popular feeling that residents of the Isle of Man are paying twice for public service broadcasting - through the TV licence to the BBC and then through a (Manx) government grant of £875,000 a year to Manx Radio".
"Whilst Tynwald upheld the importance of public service broadcasting, the way it is funded and provided locally needs to be resolved," he said.
Manx Radio, listened to by nearly half of the island's 84,000 population each week, currently generates the remainder of its budget from advertising.
But this "reliance on commercial advertising [should be] progressively reduced and ultimately removed", the report suggested.
'Level playing field'
And it said the Office of Fair Trading should assess whether Manx Radio's advertising activities were "creating unfair competition" in the radio market.
There needs to be a "level playing field" for rival stations, the report continues, with a tightening of rules which currently allow Manx Radio to charge a premium for adverts broadcast in popular programmes partly funded by taxpayers.
It also suggests legislation should also be passed to ensure public service broadcasters live within their means, with Tynwald having to approve any proposed overspends.
Other recommendations include:
- The definition of "public service broadcasting" should be reworded to distinguish between "mandatory" components including news and distinctly Manx content, and "discretionary" material including entertainment
- The Manx Treasury and the Communications Commission must agree to any changes to publicly funded broadcasting
- "Leapfrogging" the need for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), instead focussing on radio streamed online
Manx Radio last month announced it had made a loss for a third successive year.
Its annual report revealed a loss of £37,975 - an improvement on the previous year when the broadcaster was £82,406 in the red.
Mr Pugh said he was concerned the report was "suggesting the government redefines what a public broadcaster does and that the Reithean principles of informing, educating and entertaining are remodelled and that entertainment goes".
"It flies in the face of some of the true public broadcasting principles that have been set in stone for decades. That government should be very much at arm's length from the broadcasters so that the public whose station this is feel that what they hear is truly independent from government," he said.
"This is a small island we don't have a daily newspaper so Manx radio is very important. We are on 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
A BBC spokesperson said: "We note the committee's recommendations and will now look at them in detail.
"We're committed to serving audiences on the Isle of Man and all licence fee payers."
Propagation News – 11 November 2018
The large geomagnetic disturbance that we predicted last week actually hit the Earth on Sunday evening and Monday morning, as the plasma cloud was moving slower than experts predicted. Nevertheless, its effects were dramatic, pushing the Kp index to six and sparking widespread visible aurora, even from parts of the UK.
The geomagnetic storm hit HF conditions on Monday with Propquest.co.uk showing maximum useable frequencies over a 3,000km path struggling to exceed 12 to 13MHz in the morning. Things did improve as the week went on, but conditions remained unsettled with the Kp index still hitting four on Thursday the 8th.
It would be good to be able to give you better news for next week, but another very large Earth-facing coronal hole on the Sun on Thursday means we can probably expect more unsettled geomagnetic conditions on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th. NOAA agrees and predicts the Kp index could reach at least four, with the threat of suppressed maximum useable frequencies on HF. The better news is that conditions may then improve and we may see better HF propagation from Wednesday onwards.
There have been some HF highlights, however. Ron, G3SVW reports working Brian, 9J2BO in Zambia on 15 metres last Sunday, and Andy, M0NKR reports Andy, 5R8UP in Madagascar being active on 80m, which is a long haul from the UK for early November.
And now the VHF and up propagation news.
This weekend we are still under the influence of the large area of low pressure just to the northwest of Britain. This means a mild and rather breezy pattern of southwesterly winds and scattered showers, some likely to be heavy and perhaps thundery. Rain scatter will therefore be a possibility for stations on the microwave bands.
High pressure remains to the east of the UK and therefore Tropo will be only an occasional presence for the eastern side of the country, across the North Sea for example. This leaves us with the possibility of aurora due to disturbed geomagnetic conditions; the tip here is to follow the Kp index, which is a measure of how disturbed the Earth’s magnetic field is and thus indicates the prospects for aurora. Values greater than five or six should start to attract your interest.
As well as the smaller Northern Taurids meteor shower on Monday, the Leonids reach their peak next Saturday, and with a zenithal hourly rate, or ZHR, of 15 it’s one of the largest showers of the year. The Leonids occasionally produce a meteor storm with a ZHR of more than 1,000. The last one was 2001, but that’s not predicted this year. Look for enhanced reflections from today on the lower VHF bands.
The Moon is at minimum declination today and apogee on Wednesday so a poor week for EME.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all aforementioned disciplines. In
terrestrial weather forecasting I have 45 years of experience and in solar,
space and geomagnetic weather forecasting 34 years.

the point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent<- <- <-

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were
69.5 69.5 69.1.
There had been 15 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (SFI) below 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 23 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(SSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 188 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between

which had been at an unsettled geomagnetic condition.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL ON SOLAR SPACE,
GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER OBSERVING AND FORECASTING AS WELL AS GOINGS ON IN EARTH’S
IONOSPHERE.
This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

4839.997 USA WWCR TN Phone-in program talk, on President, Democrats,
election, Senators, etc. etc.
At 0514 UT S=9+5dB here in southern Germany.
4861.787 UNID, seems rather UTE stn, S=5 fluttery at 0516 UT Nov 9.
4885.024 BRA The usual powerhouse, strongest Brazilian stn in 60 mb.
S=9+5dB in peaks at 0519 UT, nice music program.
4904.987 UNID maybe Brazilian R Relogio (?), fluttery S=4-5
under threshold level.
4959.9975 STP VOA Sao Tome, S=7-8 much fluttery signal at 0522 UT.
4974.902 UNID low modulated signal string at 0523 UT.
4985.010 BRA Brasil Central Goiania, totally covered by RTTY UTE
here in Germany SDR. 850 Hertz apart distance of high speed
RTTY on center 4984.575 and 4985.425 kHz measured.
5005 some 1-2 Hertz on upper side flank measured,
GNE R Guinea Ecuatorial, Bata in Spanish language,
poor S=5 signal here in Germany. 0525 UT Nov 9.

3215even USA WWCR Nashville TN, totally covered by high speed RTTY
800 Hertz distance apart signals
on centered 3214.600 and 3215.400 kHz at 0540 UT.
