RRI Nabire reactivated on SW

** INDONESIA. 7289.92, RRI Nabire, reactivated on SW. 0808-1026*, Aug 2. Decent signal, but up against summertime QRN (static). Also heard at the same time today by Dave Valko (PA - USA). My edited audio at http://goo.gl/yu3ZNL .

Highlights:

0808-0900: Mostly non-stop songs; very few announcements.

0900-0910: Reciting from the Qur'an.

0910-1013: Mostly non-stop songs, with ID at 0931 (able to only hear "Radio Republik Indonesia").

1013-1026*: Indigenous music, into monologue, till suddenly cut off.

There are probably two good reasons why this has been reactivated now. It will be recalled that August 17 is
Independence Day (Hari Merdeka) in Indonesia.

Also Aug 18 through Sept 2, Jakarta and Palembang will host the 18th Asian Games (https://en.asiangames2018.id/), which will hold major sporting events. Worth checking for other reactivations this month (Ron Howard, Asilomar State  Beach, CA, Etón E1, antenna: 100' long wire, WOR iog via DXLD)

Bougainville in line for shortwave radio restoration

The Papua New Guinea government is contemplating restoring short wave radio services to Bougainville, after they were shut down during the civil war.

This comes as the region prepares for a referendum on possible independence, expected to be held next June.

The Bougainville regional member in the PNG parliament, Joe Lera, has raised concerns that the region's mostly rural population lacks access to information.

He said in the absence of other media these people can be won over by groups like former combatants pushing just one view - that of independence.

Mr Lera said the Minister of Communications, Sam Basil, will take a team from the national broadcaster to Bougainville later this month.

"His thinking is two options. One, national government to immediately buy two shortwave transmitters and bring Radio Bougainville back to where it was before the crisis, and two, we want to keep FM. He is also talking national government paying for two FM transmitters."

world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 67.6 68.3 68.8

A new plage group has risen above the eastern limb of the sun and could bump
the DSFI numbers above 70.

There had been 10 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of less than 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 10 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0 and 34 of the past 35 days.

In 2018 there had been 121 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

There was no earth facing sunspot group(s).

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 2 1 0 0 0 1 2 2.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 332 &
284 km/s.

at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9+10 at night and S3-5 at
day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+15 at night and S4-7
at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S1-3 at
night and S5-8 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Algerie: TDA fidèle aux ondes courtes, moyennes et longues

Développement tout azimut pour TDA Télédiffusion d'Algérie: Dans le développement du numérique en radio et en TV, l'organisme mise aussi sur la DRM Digital Radio Mondiale en AM sur O.C. O.M et G.O.



Au lendemain de l'indépendance.
L'Algérie disposait en radiodiffusion de deux émetteurs en Ondes Moyennes de 100KW et un émetteur Ondes Moyennes de 20KW à Alger. Un émetteur Ondes Moyennes de 20KW à Oran et à Constantine.
Le rêve de couvrir tout le territoire national
Ce rêve a fini par se réaliser et d'importants investissements ont été réalisés à partir de 1965.
Cela s'est soldé, d'abord, par la mise en service de deux stations en Ondes Moyennes de 600KW, à Ain Beida et Sidi Bel Abbes pour la diffusion de la Chaîne Nationale 1 dans le Nord du pays.
Ce développement a été suivi par le mise en service de la station en Ondes Moyennes de 400KW de Bechar pour la couverture du SUD OUEST.
Se faire entendre hors des frontières.
Outre la couverture nationale, l'Algérie a aussi voulu être entendue à l'étranger et a mis en service un centre Ondes Courtes à BOUCHAOUI, équipé de 8 émetteurs de 100KW et 50 KW pour la diffusion vers l'étranger des chaînes internationales.
En 1972, la mise en service de la station Ondes Longues de 1500KW de Tipaza a permis la diffusion des programmes de la Chaîne 3, sur le Territoire National et le bassin méditerranéen.
La mise en service d'un émetteur de 2 x 25KW en Onde Moyennes pour la diffusion de la Chaîne 2 sur Alger à Ouled Fayet a également été réalisée.
Développement et renouvellement des émetteurs.
1980 : Renouvellement des anciennes stations Ondes Moyennes de Ouled Fayet par la mise en service de deux nouvelles stations d'émission de 2x300KW, en Onde Moyennes (chaînes I et III)
Côte développement, on assiste à la mise en service de 14 stations OM de 5KW pour la couverture des Wilayas du Sud du pays par les programmes de la chaîne I, ainsi que la mise en service des stations de 2 x 1000KW, en Ondes Longues à OUARGLA et BECHAR, pour la couverture du Sud-est et du Sud-ouest du pays.
Rénovation partielle de certains équipements de la station Ondes Longues de TIPAZA : Renouvellement des 14 stations OM du SUD par de nouveaux émetteurs de 10KW de puissance pour la diffusion de la chaîne I et des radios de proximité
Renouvellement des stations de diffusion en Ondes Moyennes de 600KW pour les centres de Ain Beida et Sidi Bel Abbes.
Les ondes moyennes et longues continuent !
Alors que certains pays programment la fin des ondes moyennes et longue, des appels d'offres pour la réalisation de deux stations de radiodiffusion de 100 kw en ondes moyennes à Tindouf et Ain Amenas sont lancés en 2012.
Inaugurée en 1972, la station d'émission ondes longues 252 kHz de 1500 kw de Tipaza était à bout de souffle en 2014, elle a été complètement rénovée et le pylône réhabilité. Le renouvellement de la station comprenait l'installation de nouveaux émetteurs 1500kw (2 x 750 kw) et l'adaptation à la norme de diffusion numérique (DRM : Digital Radio Mondiale). L'antenne de 356 m. a été transformée en un système entièrement compatible Digital Radio Mondiale et une rénovation standard, telles que le remplacement des haubans et la peinture de la structure en acier.
L'adaptation à la norme DRM doit permettre une meilleure couverture du pays et des pays du Sud de la méditerranée ainsi qu’un meilleur confort d’écoute particulièrement lors du passage à la diffusion numérique et la possibilité de diffuser 2 à 3 chaînes radios numériques simultanément sur la même fréquence.
Confrontée à l'installation de la TV et de la radio numériques, les installations ondes courtes sont abandonnées et TDA diffuse depuis les émetteurs de TDF à Issoudun.
Les mises en service s'enchaînent.
L'installation d'une nouvelle station en ondes moyennes de 400 kw à Bechar et le renouvellement de la station d'émission d'Ouled Fayet à 600 kw en ondes moyennes ont été réalisés par Transradio et Ampegon en 2015 et viennent de se terminer.
L'installation de deux émetteurs ondes courtes de 300 kw et de 2 systèmes d'antennes à Ouarglas et Bechar sont en cours et devraient être mis en service dans les prochains mois. C'est la société Ampegon, basée en Suisse, qui a remporté le contrat.
Ces mise en service vont mettre fin à la location d'émetteur chez TDF à Issoudun.
D'autres projets OM et OC dans les tiroirs..
Il semble que la réalisation d'un centre d'émission en ondes courtes pour la diffusion des programmes internationaux à Sid Belabbes serait dans les tiroirs, de même que la réalisation d'un réseau de radio diffusion en ondes moyennes des radios de proximité dans les 48 willayate.
Et le numérique dans tout cela ?
L’Algérie poursuit l'implantation de la DAB en complément de la FM et compte passer au tout numérique. Une tâche ardue vu l'étendue du territoire et la faible densité de population.
L'Algérie est consciente que la couverture DAB ne sera pas suffisante, c'est pourquoi la TDA étudie, par ailleurs, l'usage de la DRM pour les ondes moyennes et longues.
Des essais en mode DRM ont été effectués depuis mars 2017 à partir du centre de diffusion en ondes moyennes d'Ouled Fayet près d'Alger.
Il est à noté que tous les nouveaux équipements pour les ondes moyennes, ondes longues et ondes courtes sont compatibles DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale).

It may be a while, or a long while before we hear RT again. It`s not the same problem as 7 months ago, when RT had changed the streaming URL without notice, defeating automation. Yes, this is the reason why also the programs on 6005 / 3985 are not updated. Radio Tirana is informed (Christian Milling, shortwaveservice, ibid.)

At 0230 UT August 1, 9395 again goes to World Music loop, this time starting with ``Up2 and Away``. I also try the live stream link, via new Hitlist:

and indeed it will not play; ``network error`` flashes occasionally. Of course, the WRMI broadcast would have been from a file transfer earlier, 0230 only being a legacy time for the real Radio Tirana ex-SW broadcasts.

Altho WRMI surely gets some input from satellite feeds, it probably would not be worth it to set up grasping Radio Tirana off Eutelsat 16A if that were even possible; temporarily? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOLIVIA [non]. 5935, July 29 at *2359, WWCR steel drums signing on for 12 hours. A bit of an impediment to hearing R. Yura, which Claudio Galaz, Chile, has heard reactivated in the morning as ``5936``. Not even a het/carrier here, but our best chance should be in the minutes before WWCR comes on, improving as our sun sets earlier. However, one night recently I found WWCR absent as late as 0150. We need to know the exact true frequency of Radio Yura (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1941, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11780, July 31 at 0134, RNB is S9+20 greeting listeners in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte --- so I assume it is RNB programming, not RNA specifically. Some have evaluated this as underpowered, and it may be less than original 250 kW rating, but plenty now, loud & clear (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 12000, July 30 at 0004, RHC is only S5-S2, much weaker than // 11840, 11760, 11700, 11670. Normally it`s equivalent. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, July 31 at 0142, RHC English is JBM at S9+10/20, while // 6165 is sufficient. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13767, July 31 at 1410, Oh2, RHC spurblob is back, out of the 13700-AM transmitter, somewhat readable in FM mode, along with the F# tone above Middle C. So I start looking for others at 67 kHz intervals --- none at 13633 unless maybe a trace, and tuning back to 13767, it`s gone already by 1413. 13700 itself is only S9-S8, maybe not enough to audiblize the full panoply and/or they hurriedly tuned up to suppress them. 13740 now with CRI Plus in English is S9+20/30 but as always undermodulated. ** FRANCE. 7220, July 30 at 0551, S9 of humbuzz, much like I was hearing 24 hours earlier on 9790 from RFI via Issoudun. In this case it is R. Dandal Kura, for Lake Chad area as scheduled via ISS. Either they have two bad transmitters or they switch one around, which would even out the damage. Should have rechecked how 9790 was doing this time. ** NIGERIA. 7255-, July 30 at 0552, open carrier, so VON must be back after AWOL past two nights --- if they can keep it up past 0600 for Hausa. Not until next night, July 31 at 0559 am I listening later to I hear it modulating with that wonderful percussive prélude (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1941, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 88.3, July 30 at 1858, 1902, 1915, 1933, 2014, 2042 UT chex, K202BY, the Family Radio translator for Enid, is dead air except for a weak tone. It`s noticed on caradio, since 88.3 is the easily captured frequency used to feed the SW radio into the FM. 

Not rechecked until 0158 UT August 1, when it`s *still* dead air but atonal --- furthermore on the DX-398 I can tell that there is no stereo pilot, which means the dead air is not confined to left-channel only, like their modulation had been for weeks and weeks (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 67.6 68.3 68.8.

A new plage group has risen above the eastern limb of the sun and could bump
the daily DSFI numbers above 70.

There had been 9 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) of less than 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 9 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0 and 33 of the past 34 days.

In 2018 there had been 120 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

There was no earth facing sunspot group(s).

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 0 0 0 2 1 2 2.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 339 &
277 km/s.

Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

HF radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jul 31, 2018- steady.

Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast g-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9+10 at night and S3-5 at
day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+15 at night and S4-7
at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S1-3 at
night and S5-8 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 - 29 July 2018

Solar activity was very low throughout the week. No active regions
with sunspots were observed this period and a single B1 flare at
29/2148 UTC, from an unnumbered region behind the eastern limb, was
the only flare reported this week.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
high levels on 25-29 Jul and moderate levels were observed on 23-24
Jul.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 24 Jul due to
the influence of a negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream.
Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 25 Jul and generally
quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the
period.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 30 JULY - 25 AUGUST 2018

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook
period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to reach high levels on 30-31 Jul, and 21-25 Aug. The
greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to remain below event
threshold throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic
storm levels on 20 Aug and active levels are likely on 17 and 21
Aug, all due to the influences of multiple coronal hole high speed
streams. Quiet or quiet to unsettled levels are expected throughout
the remainder of the outlook period.
